He wants to leave.Your reporter gave me a copy of his resume (简历)and photocopies of six stories that he wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues (问题), approaches them, and writesabout them, which tells me he is one of your best. I’m sure you would hate to lose him. Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He has a great assignment (分工), and said you run a great paper. It would be easy for you to keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility you’ve given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom. So why is he looking for a way out?He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights. The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is.He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he’s doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That’s what you want for him, too, isn’t it?So your reporter has set me thinking. Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists- everyone- is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential. If we can’t do it, they’ll find someone who can.25. What does the writer think of the reporter?A. Optimistic.B. Imaginative.C. Ambitious.D. Proud.26. What does the reporter want most from his editors in their talks?A. Finding the news value of his stories.B. Giving him financial support.C. Helping him to find issues.D. Improving his good ideas.27. Who probably wrote the letter?A. An editor.B. An artist.C. A rep orter.D. A reader.28. The letter aims to remind editors that they should ________.A. keep their best reporters at all costsB. give more freedom to their reportersC. be aware of their reporters’professional developmentD. appreciate their reporters’working styles and attitudesCPacing and PausingSara tried to befriend her old friend Steve’s new wife, but Betty never seemed to have anything to say. While Sara felt Betty didn’t hold up her end of the conversation, Betty complained to Steve that Sara never gave her a chance to talk. The problem had to do with expectations about pa cing and pausing.Conversation is a turn-taking game. When our habits are similar, there’s no problem. But if our habits are different, you may start to talk before I’m finished or fail to take your turn when I’m finished. That’s what was happening with Betty andSara. It may not be coincidental (巧合)that Betty, who expected relatively longer pauses between turns, is British, and Sara, who expected relatively shorter pauses, is American. Betty often felt interrupted by Sara. But Betty herself became an interrupter and found herself doing most of the talking when she met a visitor from Finland. And Sara had a hard time cutting in on some speakers from Latin America or Israel. The general phenomenon, then, is that the small conversation technique s, like pacing and pausing, lead people to draw conclusions not about conversational style but about personality and abilities. These habitual differences are often th e basis for dangerous stereotyping And these social phenomena can have very personal consequences. For example, a woman from the southwestern part of the US went to live in an eastern city to take up a job in personnel. When the Personnel Department got together for meetings, she kept searching for the right time to break in –and never found it. Although back home she was considered outgoing and confident, in Washington she was viewed as shy and retiring. When she was evaluated at the end of the year, she was told to take a training course because of her inability to speak up.That’s why slight differences in conversational style-tiny little things like microseconds of pause –can have a great effect on one’s life. The result in this case was a judgment of psychological problems –even in the mind of the woman he rself, who really wondered what was wrong with her and registered for assertivenesstraining.29. What did Sara think of Betty when talking with her?A. Betty was talkat ive.B. Betty was an interrupter.C. Betty did not take her turn.D. Betty paid no attention to Sara.30. According to the pa ssage, who are likely to expect the shortest pauses between turns?A. Americans.B. Israelis.C. The British.D. The Finns.31. We can learn from the passage that ________.A. communication breakdown results from short pauses and fast pa cingB. women are unfavorably stereotyped in eastern cities of the USC. one’s inability to speak up is culturally determined sometimesD. one should receive training to build up one’s confidence32. The underlined word “assertiveness”in the last paragraph probably means ________.A. being willing to speak one’s mindB. being able to increase one’s powerC. being ready to make one’s own judgmentD. being quick to express one’s ideas confidentlyDWhen something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, “Well, it’sso-and-so’s fault.”or “I know I’m late, but it’s not my fault; the car broke down.”It is probably no t your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on the person. You should aecept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well. This is what being a winner is all about-creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and apportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is.”Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.33. According to the passage, winners _________.A. deal with problems rather than blame othersB. m eet with fewer difficulties in their livesC. have responsible and able colleaguesD. blame themselves rather that others34. When your colleague brings about a problem, you should ________.A. find a better way to handle the problemB. blame him for his lack of responsibilityC. tell him to find the cause of the problemD. ask a more able colleague for help35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. A Winner’s Secret.B. A Winner’s ProblemC. A Winner’s Opportunity.D. A Winner’s Achievement.

The new exam is called the EFSET, which is short for Education First Standardized English Test. The company, Education First, is known by the letters EF.It is estimated that there are two billion English language learners worldwide. Many of them are interested in attending an American college or university. To do so, foreign students need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language—betterknown as TOEFL. However, many foreigners are not wealthy enough to take the TOEFL. In addition, test-takers often have to travel overnight to reach an official testing site. The World Bank says an average Cambodian worker earns only about $1,000 per year. Approximately the cost of taking the TOEFL is 17.5 percent of the average worker’s yearly wage.It is not just individuals who find the test pricey. Some governments also find it prohibitive. What’s more, not every one needs official results from the TOEFL or IELTS—the International English Language Testing System. In the future, it’s likely that the government may use the EFSET to test millions of employees and students.Experts believe that the EFSET meets the highest value in language testing. It uses special computer software that makes the questions easier or harder, depending on one’s performance. The EFSET measures all the English learners’ levels while the IELTS and TOEFL only measure learners’ levels from in termediate to advanced. The EFSET is unique in the sense that it gives free online access to anyone interested in measuring their English level. There is a 50-minute and a two-hour version of the test, which its developers are calling the EFSET Plus. Both versions test only reading and listening skills. It’s hopeful that speaking and writing skills will be tested in the future. The IELTS and the TOEFL still use humans to rate the speaking and writing sections. It’s a huge deal for students who are in areas where they can’t get to the TOEFL or the IELTS. However, it is too early to know whether the EFSET results are acceptable for colleges and universities in America.5.Why do many foreign students take the TOEFL?A. To learn English well.B. To be admitted to key universities.C. To receive further education in America.D. To find good jobs and earn much money.6. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?A. Only wealthy people can take the TOEFL.B. The cost of taking the TOEFL is very high.C. There are many official testing sites for the TOEFL around the world.D. Few of the students in Cambodia can afford to take the TOEFL.7. What can we learn about the EFSET?A. It is similar to the TOEFL and the IELTS.B. Everybody with different English levels can take it for free.C. It tests the skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking.D. American universities accept the EFSET results for admission.CResearchers have created a backpack that has a computer and medicines in it thatcan help even untrained soldiers save the lives of wounded troops. Wounded soldiershave a better chance of survival if they get help soon after being hurt and are quicklytaken to a hospital or clinic. But soldiers who do not have medical training may notknow how to help their injured friends.Doctors and engineers have developed what they call an “intelligent backpack”.It has a computer and electronic measuring devices. The backpack also has roboticinstruments and medicines ready to give to injured troops.About 16 doctors and engineers from the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie MellonUniversity and several other places are working on the project. The U. S. Departmentof Defense has given money to the project.Ron Poropatich leads the project. He is a retired army surgeon. He says thebackpack will help soldiers care for those who are injured. The devices included inthe backpack can monitor a person’s heart rate and blood pressure. The roboticinstruments can even tell whether the soldier has a collapsed lung. The intelligent backpack’s computer can compare information gathered about theinjured soldier with thousands of similar cases, and quickly tell the best methodsto use to save the soldier’s l ife.Sometimes, it is not always possible to quickly remove the injured soldier fromthe battlefield. So, Dr. Poropatich says, the researchers hope to create a backpackthat will have devices that can keep a soldier alive for a long time. Dr. Poropatichhopes the backpack and its instruments will be ready for testing animals in about three years.8. We can learn from Paragraph 1 _________.A. most of the soldiers can’t use the backpack correctlyB. soldiers should have taken medical trainingC. war or battle has brought harm to the worldD. the backpack can play a big part in the battlefield9. How many kinds of items are mentioned in the backpack?A. 3B. 4C. 2D. 510. According to Ron Poropatich, we know that ________.A. the injurer's heart disease can be curedB. the devices can adjust soldiers’ blood pressureC. the robotic instruments can monitor lungsD. the project got support from the whole world11. Which is the best title for the passage?A. Emergency Medical Care in a Backpack.B. Robotic Devices Used in the Battlefield.C. Medical Care Tested on the Wounded Soldiers.D. Researchers and Their Wonderful Discovery.DTo be honest, I do not know Sybrina Fulton. Nor can I claim to understand the depth of her pain. Yet, we share a deep connection. A common feature experienced by those women who face the challenge of raising a Black male child in a nation that far too often views Black male bodies through fear. You see, Ms. Fulton is living my nightmare (噩梦). A constant worry that has stayed in the back of my mind since the birth of my eldest son, some sixteen years ago.Through the years, I have witnessed the world’s reaction to my son evolve as he has grown from a small boy to a young man. In his early years, his easy smile and lovable character were nothing less than magnetic Complete strangers would approach him in the street, draw him into conversation, and find themselveseasily struck by his lively spirit. Even at that time I worried, how would my son react when in the years to come some of those who found themselves so impressed by this cute, intelligent boy, might grasp their purse tighter as he walked by.Over the years I have sought to protect his spirit from the hurt that comes from undeserved hatred. I have also sought to arm him with the knowledge that could one day save his life. He knows, for example, that if he is ever pulled over by the police, that he is to keep both hands on the wheel at all times and only reach for his license when the officer is specifically observing his actions. He knows, even in less threatening situations, that rough play and loud interactions with his buddies of any color will be viewed very differently when he does it, than when his white friends display the very same behavior. Still, the truth of the matter is, no amount of advice or voiceless behavior overcomes the physical, immovable fact of the color of his skin. His intelligence, easy smile, and lovable character won't protect him from unfounded assumptions of criminality. What makes the Trayvon Martin travesty (歪曲) of justice so painful to me, personally, is the knowledge that Trayvon’s mother loved her baby no less than I love mine. The various pictures of moments throughout a happy childhood that have now found a home on nationwide newscasts provides clear evidence of that. Yet no amount of love and care, and no words of advice could have saved her son from the cruel killing he faced at the hands of a self-appointed neighborhood watch-dog. And perhaps even worse, nothing could have prepared her for the inhuman way her son has been treated by officials even in death. To think for three long days, his parents searched for him while officials failed to inform them of his fate and instead, performed drug and alcohol tests on his lifeless body, while failing to do the same for his attacker—the only one of the two who indeed had a criminal past is frankly, unforgivable. To know that the words of her son's killer were given more weight than eye-witnesses and taped evidence of her child’s screams and eventual death must be heartbreaking. But to also have to live with the fact that his attacker still breathes free while her son lays buried underground is certainly more than any sorrowful parent should have to endure (忍受).It is this type of pain that is not unfamiliar to the Black experience in America, for this is the Black mothers’ burden. A burden we have endured for centuries. Yet, there is still the rightful expectation, that in modern-day America, the wheels of justice would not be stopped. So today, it is my hope that Trayvon’s mother, father, family and friends can take some comfort in the fact that millions of Americans of every color stand with them in their fight for justice. This is a burden no family should have to endure alone. We will not give up. We will not forget. We will continue the fight until justice is done.12.What do you know about Sybrina Fulton?A. She was anxious about her son.B. She waspainful to lose her son.C. She had trouble in raising her son.D. Shehad the same dream as the writer.13. By “keep both hands on the wheel at all times” in Paragraph 3, the writermeans her son should __________.A. get ready toresistB. remain where he isC. pretend to bescaredD. show his innocence14. From the story of Trayvon Martin, we can infer that __________.A. he was killed simply because of his color of skinB. he was accused of taking drug even after his deathC. he kept silent even when he was being attackedD. the police failed to find strong evidence against the attacker15. The article is mainly intended to ______.A. draw attention to the facts about killingsB. give comfortto the victims' familiesC. appeal for the end to the terrible situationD. displayhatred for terrible phenomena第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AFive of the most beautiful villagesSidi Bou Said in TunisiaThis village seems to disappear into the sky. All the houses are painted white and the skies are clear. It's not surprising that the life here is very relaxing, and it is also home to plenty of cafes and art galleries.Wengen in SwitzerlandDo you ever wonder how the world was before cars were invented? The village called Wengen might just help you realize your dreams. Cars have been banned from this area for close to 100 years, and everything looks like it was taken right out of Heidi. The locals have kept their Swiss culture undamaged. Shirakawa-go in JapanThis village is certainly known for its unusual houses with triangular roofs which seem to resemble hands joined in prayer. It's designed to keep snow from piling up on top of houses. These houses are the symbol of the area but there aren't many of them left anymore.Eze in FranceFrance in itself is pretty, but its most attractive village is Eze. This community seems to be frozen in time. This village is the perfect melting pot of cultures because of its closeness to Nice. During the Middle Ages, it was desired by invaders(侵略者),and while this was a cause of sadness for the local people in the past, today the village enjoys its rich heritage(遗产).The architecture here is so diverse. Bibury in EnglandLocated on the River Coln in the West of England, Bibury was described as "the most beautiful village in England”.Honey-colored 17th-century stone cottages, the Church of St.Mary and a still-working 1902 farm are some of the ancient village’s must-sees. The most photographed spot is Arlington Row, whichis a collection of 14th-century stone buildings.21.Where can visitors enjoy paintings?A.In Sidi Bou Said.B.In Shirakawa-go.C.In Wengen.D.In Eze.22. What's the similarity between Wengen and Bibury?A. They both sit by a long river.B. They both have an ancient view.C. They are home to many inventions.D. They are located in the same country.23. What do we know about Eze?A. Its people look sad.B. It forbids cars to enter.C. Its architecture is modern.D. It was attacked in the past.BIt is curious that Stephen Koziatek feels almost as though he has to explain about his efforts to give his students a better future.Mr Koziatek is part of something pioneering. He is a teacher at a New Hampshire high school where learning is not about books and tests and rote memorization(死记硬背),but something practical. As Koziatek knows, there is learning in just about everything. Nothing is necessarily gained by forcing students to learn geometry at a desk. They can also learn geometry by putting together a bicycle. But he's also found a kind of prejudice. Working with your hands is seen as almost a mark of inferiority(低等).Schools in the family of vocational(职业的) education “have that opinion...that it's for kids who can't make it academically,” he says.On one hand, that viewpoint is a logical product of America's evolution. Manufacturing(制造业)is not the economic engine that it once was. The job security that the US economy once offered to high school graduates has largely disappeared. More education is the new way. We want more for our kids, and rightfully so.But the headlong push into bachelor's degrees for all—and the devaluing of anything less—misses an important point: That's not the only thing the American economy needs. Yes, a bachelor’s degree opensmore doors. But even now, 54 percent of the jobs in the country are middle-skill jobs, such as construction and high-skill manufacturing, according to the National Skills Coalition. But only 44 percent of workers are adequately trained. There is a gap in working-class jobs, but the workers who need those jobs most aren't equipped to do them. Koziatek's Manchester School of Technology (High School) is trying to fill that gap.Koziatek's school is a wake-up call. When education becomes one-size-fits-all, it risks overlookinga nation's diversity of gifts.24. What's the characteristic of Mr. Koziatek’s school?A. Paying attention to practical learning.B. Letting students do many tests.C. Encouraging students to read books.D. Forcing students to learn by rote.25. What does the underlined phrase "that viewpoint” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. Vocational education is for academically challenged students.B. Vocational education is undoubtedly a good choice.C. Not all students can be admitted to college.D. Not all students can do physical work.26. How are people reacting to the disappearance of manufacturing?A. They lower their expectations.B. They try to improve their skills.C. They turn to the government.D. They continue their education.27. What does the author think of the school's goal?A. It needs lots of effort.B. It is worth achieving.C. It is unpractical.D. It is adventurous.CWhen I was eleven, my parents gave me the first book I ever owned—“The Tales of Edgar Allan Poe”.I distinctly remember opening it, reading the first lines of "The Cask of Amontillado,” and remarkingto myself, "So this is what reading is!”My delight was unbounded. Little did I know at the time that I was at the beginning of a lifelong journey. So, if I read my first real book at the advanced age of 11, what was I reading before then? In a word, readers: relatively plotless, repetitive if well-intentioned attempts to teach children to recognize letters and their sounds and to build their vocabularies. Being a dutiful boy, I went through the motions and I learned what words were. But I had no idea what writing was. Until Poe. In Poe's stories, the sentences were more complex and stylish than anything I had ever read before.Poe, in short, was a start. My parents gave me that first book, but then I went off on my own. I liked science, which led me to discover Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Other writers followed quickly one after another: Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke. But I didn't limit myself to science fiction. Other titles that deeply impressed me early on, and which I have carried on my life's journey, include: “The Yearling,"“Shane”“Ivanhoe,"“Of Mice and Men," "To Kill a Mocking bird," and “The Good Earth”.It went on from there. I became that kid who, long after his parents told him to turn the lights off, hid under the covers with a flashlight and a book, his greatest fear of being discovered and having his flashlight taken away. I realize that my parents must have known I was defying (违背) them. But in their wisdom they pretended to be ignorant of it. And so I owe my start as a reader to my parents.28. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?A. The author's good memories.B. The author's childhood before 11.C. The author's parents' reading habits.D. The author's affection for his first book.29. What was the influence of plotless reading on the author?A.He didn't accumulate enough vocabularies.B. He didn't know what real writing was.C. He couldn't read complex sentences.D. He couldn't write a good article.30. What is the attitude of the author's parents to his reading under the covers?A.Indifferent.B. Tolerant.C. Anxious.D. Objective.31. What is the best title for the text?A. How I wrote a good bookB. How I found my favorite booksC. How I learned from my parentsD. How I became a reader of booksDAt one recently-opened restaurant in Japan, diners are warned that they very well might not get what they ordered—but surprisingly, it seems few customers are complaining. That's because waiters at the restaurant, which is called“The Restaurant of Order Mistakes, all have dementia and Alzheimer's(痴呆和阿尔茨海默症). The founders of the unique dining spot hope that eating there will help change opinions about dementia and teach customers to be more patient with those who suffer from it.Yahoo! Japan first reported that the restaurant opened in Tokyo's Toyosu district on June 2 and closed after June 4, but will re-open around World Alzheimer's Day in September. The restaurant’s name is a twist on the title of a 1924 story by Kenji Miyazawa called The Restaurant of Many Orders. The restaurant idea was originally thought of by a few like-minded people, including the owners of Maggie's Tokyo. The founders hope to spread a message about inclusivity(包容), and teach people to be more understanding toward elders with dementia. The restaurant also serves to point out that dementia and Alzheimer's sufferers can still be functioning members of society. It's also a fun way to celebrate human mistakes. It doesn't all run smoothly, though. The restaurant readily warns that waiters may bring customers the wrong order. They also may forget to bring drinks or other items.Mizuho Kudo, a Japanese food editor, tweeted(发推特) about her stop at the restaurant. She ordered a hamburger steak but was given gyoza dumplings instead, but everything turned out to be unexpectedly delicious and she said she "laughed a lot” during the meal. She also noted that the waiter were full of smiles and seemed to be having a lot of fun, laughing and excitedly attending to their customers with delicious food. Her tweet about the experience has been liked over 160,000 times, and many commenters seemed impressed by the idea.32. In what way is the restaurant special?A. Its waiters all suffer from a brain disease.B. It only provides traditional foods.C. Its service is the best in Japan.D. It opens only in September.33. What’s one purpose of the restaurant?A. To show dementia sufferers can still contribute to society.B. To raise money for people suffering from mental illness.C. To educate the young to understand the elders.D. To show people a new type of restaurant.34. What did Mizuho Kudo do after having a meal in the restaurant?A. She brought her friends to the restaurant.B. She opened a similar restaurant.C. She volunteered to work in the restaurant.D. She shared her experience with others.35. How did Mizuho Kudo feel about her experience in the restaurant?A.Surprising. B. Unusual.C.Pleasant. D.
