Stage fright or performance anxiety is the anxiety, or fear which may occur in an individual by the requirement to perform in front of an audience. It is most commonly seen in school situations, like stand-up projects and class speeches. It has numerous forms: heart beating fast, trembling hands and legs, sweaty hands, dry mouth etc.In fact, most of the fear occurs before you step on stage. Once you’re up there, it usually goes away. Thus, it is a phenomenon that you must learn to control. Try to think of stage fright in a positive way. It heightens your energy, adds color to your cheeks. With these good side effects you will actually look healthier and more physically attractive. Many of the top performers in the world get stage fright so you are in good company. Stage fright may come and go or decrease, but it usually does not disappear permanently. You must concentrate on getting the feeling out and present what you have prepared calmly. Remember “Nobody” e ver died from stage fright. But, according to surveys, many people would rather die than give a speech. If that applies to you, and you are an unlucky guy who is with stage fright the whole time, try out some of the strategies(策略) as follows to help get yourself under control. Realize that you may never overcome stage fright, but you can learn to control it, and use it to your advantage.Strategies are as follows when the program begins:1) If legs are trembling, lean on table or shift legs or move.2) Don’t ho ld notes. The audience can see them shake. Use three-by-five cards instead.3) Use eye contact. Look at the friendliest faces in the audience.Remember nervousne ss doesn’t show one-tenth as much as it feels. Before each presentation, make a short list of the items you think will make you feel better. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations. You never know which ones will work best until you try. Use these steps to c ontrol stage fright so it doesn’t control you. With the tears streaming down her face, she put her two hands to her lips, and kissed them to Him; then clasped(紧握着)them on her breast,as if she laid his ruined head there.“You are not the gaoler’s(监狱长)daughter ?”She sighed“No. ”“Who are you ?”Not yet trusting the tones of her voice, she sat down on the bench beside him.He drew back but she laid her hand upon his arm.A strange thrill struck him when she did so, and visibly passed over his frame; he laid the knife down softly,as he sat staring at her.Her golden hair, which she wore in long curls, had been hurriedly pushed aside, and fell down over her neck.Advancing his hand by little and little,he took it up and looked at it.In the middle of the action he went astray, and, with another deep sigh, fell to work at his shoemaking. But lot for long.Releasing his arm,she laid her hand upon his shoulder. After looking doubtfully at it,two or three times,as if to be sure that it was really there,he laid down his work, put his hand to his neck, and took off a blackened string with a scrap of folded rag attached to it.He opened this, carefully,on his knee, and it contained a very little quantity of hair:not more than one or two long golden hairs, which he had,in some old day, wound on upon his finger. He took her hair into his hand again, and looked closely at it.“It is the same. How can it be! When was it! How was it!”As the concentrating expression returned to his forehead,he seemed to become conscious that it was in hers too.He turned her full to the light, and looked at her.“She had laid her head upon my shoulder, that night when I was summoned(传唤)out—she had a fear of my going, though I had none—and when I was brought to the North Tower they found these upon my sleeve.‘You will leave me them? They can never help me to escape in the body, though they may in the spirit.’Those were the words I said.I remember them very well. ”He formed this speech with his lips many times before he could utter it.But when he did find spoken words for it,they came to him coherently(连贯地),though slowly.“How was this?一Was it you? ”1.The underlined word“it” in the passage refers to“”.A.her hair B.her hand C.his arm D.his shoulder2.The passage is most probably taken from .A.a chant B.a drama C.a novel D.an essay3.From the passage,we can infer that .A.the lady was the gaoler’s friend B.the man lived a peaceful lifeC.they hadn’t seen each other for years D.they made a happy conversation4.The old man took the lady’s hair into his hand again because .A.the hair reminded him of his daughterB.he found the hair of high qualityC.the lady had almost the same hair as he didD.the lady’s hair worried him so much5.The writer attracts the readers by .A.describing the changes of the relationshipB.giving a vivid description of detailsC.using funny and humorous languageD.presenting unpredictable consequence【参考答案】1—5、BCCAB2014高考英语阅读理解(新闻报道、广告)【2014·福建卷】CBLOOD DRIVE &MARROW(骨髓)REGISTRATION“These patients deserve a chance at a normal, happy future and they rely on the kindness of thestrangers to make that happen.—Daisy, Isabelle’s MotherIsabelle is the daughter of Daisy and Saman Mirzaei. Children spend more time messaging each other on phones and websites than talking in Person ,a survey has revealed. Text messages and social networking sites have become the common mode of youngsters aged 8 to 14.A survey of modem childhood found that many youngsters are conscious that they are spending too much time on their computers and enjoy themselves the most 'when playing outside. But the lure of electronic products proves too strong for a quarter, while a fifth say their parents don't like them playing outside because they are worried about strangers and injuries. The "iGeneration report" suggested that youngsters are increasingly health-conscious and skeptical(特怀疑态度的) of commercialization, including gender-based labelling on toys and pop videos released by singers. More than half of those questioned care about eating healthily and one in 10 lectures their own parents about the food they are eating or buying. 42 percent of those questioned own a smartphone , with 36 percent admitting to spending more time communicating with friends via instant messaging, such as texts or networking websites, than talking in person Only one child in 100 said that being happy, having a loving family and being clever were taken as the most crucial(决定性的) elements in their lives.Cary Cooper, the professor of organizational psychology and health at Lancaster University , said social media were contributing to youngsters becoming more independent. They had a sense of individuality due to exposure to a range of media. The survey follows major statebacked research which found that youngsters are turning their back on drink, drugs and smoking. It found a dramatic drop in the number of secondary school students trying and regularly using drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Some analysts said that thanks to the rise of social media, millions of teenagers are spending their time at home in their rooms rather than out on the streets.1. 贵州凤冈县2017高考英语阅读理解一轮自选训练及参考答案【2016高考训练题】阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。

I knew a man, a very tall, gentle man, for several years before I found out that he visited prisoners in our local prison, week in and week out for decades. He would write letters for them, carry messages, fetch clothing or books. But mainly he just offered himself. He did not lecture to them, didn’t pick and choose between those he liked and disliked and didn’t look for any return on his kindness. All that mattered was that they were in trouble. Why did he spend t ime with prisoners when he could have been playing golf or watching TV? “I go in case everyone else has given up on them,” he told me once. “I’ll never give up.”Never giving up is a quality we honor in athletes, in soldiers, in survivors of disasters, in patients recovering from severe injuries. If you struggle bravely against strong opponents(对手), you are likely to end up on the evening news. But in less flashy, less newsworthy forms, devotion to a task, or a person, or an occupation shows up in countless lives all around us.It shows up in parents who will not quit loving their daughter even after she dyes her hair purple, tattoos (纹身)her belly and runs off with a rock band. It shows ill couples who choose to mend their marriages instead of ending it. It shows up in volunteers at the hospital or library, it shows up in unsung people everywhere who do their job well, not because the boss is watching or because they are paid large amounts of money but because they know their work matters.1. Why did the man visit the prisoners every week _______.A. That’s his jobs.B. He wanted to teach them a lesson.C. He was a postman.D. He wanted to show care and offer help.2. From the third paragraph, we can infer that when never giving up is mentioned, people are likely to relate it to ________.A. unknown peopleB. people facing challengesC. the divorced couplesD. the hospital volunteers3. What quality does the author value most according to the text?A. The courage to fight against strong opponents.B. The kindness of your friends and family members.C. The faithfulness of unsung people around us.D. The strong will of the survivors of disasters.4. The author mentions the story of the gentleman in order to ________.A. introduce the themeB. state a factC. criticize the prisonersD. cover a story本文通过讲述一位绅士每周去探望囚犯的故事引入话题谈及永不言弃的精神时,人们更可能联想到面对挑战的人们,比如文中所列举的运动员、士兵、灾难中的幸存者等等。

But i n less flashy, less newsworthy forms, devotion to a task, or a person, or an occupation shows up in countless lives all around us.

If you smoke and you still don’t believe that there’s a definite link between smoking and bronchial troubles, heart disease and lung cancer, then you are certainly deceiving yourself. No one will accuse you of hypocrisy. Let us just say that you are suffering from a bad case of wishful thinking. This needn’t make you too uncomfortable because you are in good company. Whenever the subject of smoking and health is raised, the governments of most countries hear no evil, see no evil and smell no evil. Admittedly, a few governments have taken timid measures. In Britain for instance, cigarette advertising has been banned on television. The conscience of the nation is appeased, while the population continues to puff its way to smoky, cancerous death. You don’t have to look very far to find out why the official reactions to medical findings havebeen so lukewarm. The answer is simply money. Tobacco is a wonderful commodity to tax. It’s almost like a tax on our daily bread. In tax revenue alone, the government of Britain collects enough from smokers to pay for its entire educational facilities. So while the authorities point out ever so discreetly that smoking may, conceivable, be harmful, it doesn’t do to shout to o loudly about it.This is surely the most short-sighted policy you could imagine. While money is eagerly collected in vast sums with one hand, it is paid out in increasingly vaster sums with the other. Enormous amounts are spent on cancer research and on efforts to cure people suffering from the disease. Countless valuable lives are lost. In the long run, there is no doubt that everybody would be much better-off if smoking were banned altogether.Of course, we are not ready for such a drastic action. But if the governments of the world were honestly concerned about the welfare of their peoples, you’d think they’d conduct aggressive anti-smoking campaigns. Far from it! The tobacco industry is allowed to spend staggering sums on advertising. Its advertising is as insidious as it is dishonest. We are never shown pictures of real smokers coughing up their lungs early in the morning. That would never do. The advertisement always depict virile, clean-shaven young men. They suggest it is manly to smoke, even positively healthy! Smoking is associated with the great open-air life, with beautiful girls, true love and togetherness. What utter nonsense! For a start, governments could begin by banning all cigarette and tobacco advertising and should then conduct anti-smoking advertising campaigns of their own. Smoking should be banned in all public places like theatres, cinemas and restaurants. Great efforts should be made to inform young people especially of the dire consequences of taking up the habit. A horrific warning – say, a picture of a death’s head –should be included in every packet of cigarettes that is sold. As individuals, we are certainly weak, but if governments acted honestly and courageously, they could protect us from ourselves.1.Why do a few governments take timid measures toward smoking?[A] because they are afraid of people.Because diseases cost a lot.[C] Because they are afraid of the cutting down of their revenue.[D] Because they are afraid of manufacturers.2.The tone of this passage is[A] critical.ironical.[C] distaste.[D] amusing.3.What does the sentence “because you are in good company” mean?[A] you are backed by the government. You are not alone.[C] You have good colleagues.[D] Governments are blind to evils of smoking too.4.What is the best title of this passage?[A] World Governments should conduct serious campaigns against smoking.World governments take timid measures against smoking.[C] smoking is the most important source of income to many countries.[D] tobacco industry spends a large sum of money on medical research.
