在旧金山机场的四度延迟，加上费尽周折要回建材耽误的时间，他回到科尔飞时已是十月中旬，比之前跟哈吉·阿里约定的时间几乎晚了一个月。
“他们这个星期应该开始盖墙了才对啊!”摩顿森生着闷气，开始怪起自己来，“我不能一直到巴基斯坦来，现在我结婚了，我得有份工作。
”摩顿森希望赶快把学校盖好，然后好好规划自己未来的路。
可现在，即将来临的冬日又会再度耽搁盖学校的进度，摩顿森一路踢着石头生闷气。
“怎么回事?”哈吉·阿里用巴尔蒂语问，“你看起来像只横冲直撞的年轻公羊。
”摩顿森深吸了一口气，“你们为什么还没开始动工?”他问。
“葛瑞格医生，我们在你回去的时候，讨论过你的计划。
”哈吉·阿里说，“我们觉得没有必要浪[ 三杯茶] ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————~ 244 ~费你的钱，把它付给门中村和艾斯科里那些懒惰的工人。
他们要是知道学校是一个有钱的外国人盖的，就会耍心机，做很少的事却要很多的钱。
所以我们决定自己采石材，结果花了整个夏天的时间，因为村里的男人得接挑夫和协作的工作。
不用担心钱，我把它好好地锁在我家了。
”“我不是担心钱。
”摩顿森说，“但是我希望在冬天来到之前，至少把学校的屋顶盖好，孩子们能有个地方儿读书。
”哈吉·阿里把手放在摩顿森肩上，像父亲一样拍了拍这个没耐性的美国人。
“我感谢慈悲的安拉把你赐给我们，感谢你为我们所做的一切。
但是科尔飞的人住在这个没有学校的地方已经六百年了。
”他笑着说，“多一个冬天又有什么关系?”回哈吉·阿里家的路上，他们穿过一捆捆麦穗堆成的金黄色走廊，摩顿森每走几步，就有村民把身上背的农作物放下来欢迎他。
从田里返回的妇女们把身子往前倾，倒出背上竹篓里的麦梗，再回到田里用长柄镰刀继续收割。
摩顿森注意到，她们头[ 三杯茶] ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————上戴的“乌答瓦兹”帽子除了沾上色彩单调的麦糠碎谷外，还有些闪亮的丝线和羊毛织在一起——正是他用来做记号的红蓝尼龙绳。
在科尔飞，任何东西都不会浪费。
那天晚上，摩顿森和塔瓦哈一起躺在哈吉·阿里家的屋顶上，回想起上次睡在同样的位置时，心里有多孤单。
现在他想着塔拉，脑海中闪现出她在旧金山机场隔着玻璃跟他挥手时可爱的模样，强烈的幸福感涌了上来，他迫不及待地想与人分享。
“塔瓦哈，你睡了吗?”摩顿森问。
“还没。
”“我有件事要告诉你，我结婚了。
”摩顿森听到轻轻的“咔嗒”一声，眯眼朝着突然亮起的手电筒灯光望去——手电筒是他刚送给塔瓦哈的礼物。
塔瓦哈坐起身，用他新奇的灯光玩具研究摩顿森的表情，想弄清他是不是在开玩笑。
接着手电筒掉到了地上，一阵祝福的拳头兴奋地落在摩顿森的臂膀上。
最后塔瓦哈终于跌坐在床上，高兴地叹了口气。
“哈吉·阿里说葛瑞格医生这[ 三杯茶] ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————~ 246 ~次看起来不太一样。
”塔瓦哈笑着说，“他真的什么都知道。
”塔瓦哈开心地玩起了手电筒的开关。
“我能知道她的名字吗?”“塔拉。
”“塔??拉。
”塔瓦哈跟着念。
这个发音在乌尔都语里是“星辰”的意思。
“她很美吗，您的塔拉?”’“是的，”摩顿森觉得自己脸红了，“非常美。
”“您要给她父亲多少只公羊和山羊呢?”塔瓦哈问。
“她父亲和我父亲一样，都已经过世了。
”摩顿森说，“而且在美国，我们不给新娘聘礼。
”“她离开母亲的时候，有没有哭?”“她是和我结婚后才告诉她母亲的。
”塔瓦哈停顿了片刻，思索着美国奇特的婚姻习俗。
来到巴基斯坦后，摩顿森曾经受邀参加过几十次婚礼。
在巴尔蒂斯坦，不同的村庄有不同的婚礼习俗，但是他见过的所有婚礼，主题基本都一样：新娘要表达永远离开家的痛苦和悲伤。
