We read a really cool article about these middle school students who created a community garden. They grew all kinds of fruits and vegetables, and donated the extra food to a local food bank. Isn't that awesome?We learned useful phrases for volunteering like "I'd be happy to help out" and "Just let me know what needs to be done." We also practiced making polite requests using "Could you..." and "Would you mind..." Like if I needed someone's help at the garden, I could say "Could you water those tomato plants for me?"For our unit project, we had to find a need in our community and come up with a plan to volunteer to help fix it. A few friends and I decided to do a recycling drive. We're going to go around collecting bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard from our neighbors. Then we'll take it all to the recycling center. It's a small thing, but it'll help reduce waste and pollution. I'm really excited to make a difference!The last unit we've covered so far is called "Culture Appreciation." At the end of the story, her diverse group of friends all joined in the New Year's festivities too. I thought that was so cool how they could all appreciate and share in her cultural traditions.For our project, we had to pick a cultural holiday or tradition and do a research report about it. I chose to learn about the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japan. The gorgeous pink cherry trees only bloom for a couple weeks each spring. People have picnics and parties under the blooming trees to celebrate the beauty of nature. I made a poster with photos, descriptions of the differentevents and foods, and interesting facts I found out. Like did you know it's considered bad luck if you look at the cherry blossom trees alone? You're supposed to view them with loved ones!Well, that's what we've covered so far in my 6th grade English class. Units on the future, volunteering in the community, and cultural appreciation.
