We always had totally different ideas. For me it was important to finish college. He wanted me to work my way to the top as he had done in his field, but I wanted a different life. There was a time when we did not talk with each other.A few months ago, I heard that my 84-year-old dad was in poor health. When he called and asked whether I could move from Colorado back to Tennessee to help him, I knew he was seriously ill. I am his only child and so it was time to meet my father’s requirement. Two weeks after moving back, we bought a boat and started fishing again. Fishing was one of the few things that we did while I was young and that we both enjoyed. It is strange but true that as we are fishing we are able to put things that have kept us apart for so many years behind us. We are able to talk about things that we have never talked about before. Fishing has been healing(治愈)the old wounds that have kept us apart. It is not important how many fish we catch. It is about enjoying the relationship that we have not had for years. I’m 62 and he is 84. When we are on the lake fishing, it is like two kids enjoying life. It is far better to find a way to put the unhappy past behind. I am so lucky to spend the happy time with my father in his last years. Now my heart is filled with love. A smile always graces my lips.21. The author and his father became further apart because .A. they lived very far from each otherB. they had different views on thingsC. they only communicated by phoneD. they seldom went to see each other22. Because he regretted being rude to his father.23. For the author, fishing with his old father .A. helps cure his father’s diseaseB. is a good way to get close to natureC. makes him realize the importance of relaxationD. provides a chance for them to communicate24. I had a quarrel with the airport staff and then was asked to have a drug test. I missed the flight home later because of bad weather. Now my flight home was full and running late. I felt sorry and unlucky. At that moment,I noticed a 5-year-old boy standing by his mother, watching me. He left his mother and slowly walked towards me. “Great!”I thought sadly,“No w I have to take care of a 5-year-old child. My day is now complete.”As he came closer,I found it was my hat that he was after. I wanted to tell him not to touch my things, but I was curious(好奇的)to know what he would do with my hat. With wide eyes,he gently touched my hat. He looked up at me,smiling, but saying nothing. I asked him if he wanted to wear my hat,he excitedly nodded, still smiling. I placed my hat on his head, but it fell down around his ears. He didn’t mind and held it up with both hands. He ran to show his mother, then back to me,still smiling. With much respect,he slowly took off my hat with both hands and gave it to me.I put my hat on and gave him an airplane card. Holding the card carefully with both hands,he looked up at me and said,“Mister, you sure are lucky.” “Yes,I sure am,”I said. It is about a 13-year-old girl named Elizabeth Hardy who babysits the McBride children David and Suzie. One rainy, stormy evening they walk home from school. When they arrive home, water floods (淹没) the backyard, cuts the power and floods roads, which stops Mr. and Mrs. McBride from coming home. Soon the flooding begins to invade the McBrides’ home and Elizabeth, David, Suzie and their dog Daisy try very hard to escape and survive the flood. My favorite character is David because I find him very funny and brave, and although he can be stubborn and rude at times, he is still a nice and friendly person. As much I want to be like David I could never be like him. At least, I don’t think I could ever do something as brave as he does.I think Eric Walters does a great job in describing the characters and telling the story. I really feel like this all just happened in front of my eyes. Ever since I started reading Safe as Houses I never wanted to put the book down, and considering I was not a big fan of reading that did not happen very often. Safe as Houses changed my opinion in regard to reading and now I enjoy reading very much.Eric Walters’ writing career (生涯) all started in 1993 when Eric was teaching a grade 5 class. His students were not good readers and did not like reading, so Eric created a book called Stand Your Ground for his students and used some of the students’ names to create the story. Ever since Eric published (出版) that book he has become a big time writer and has published many amazing different books like Camp X, Tiger Trap, Camp 30, We All Fall Down and Flyboy.33. What happened on that particular evening?A. A 13-year-old got lost.B. A terrible rainstorm broke out.C. Three children were trapped on the way home.D. The McBrides’ home was completely destroyed by floods.34. What does the author like about David?A. His creativity.B. His great skill.C. His personality.D. His good behavior.35. What can we infer about the author?A. He is a man full of courage.B. He used to enjoy reading very much.C. He is very like David in Safe as Houses.D. He has been greatly affected by Safe as Houses.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

He takes pictures of flowers, sunsets and road signs. But those photos don't usually end up in a scrapbook (剪贴簿) or on his bedroom walls. When Timmy was five, he found out that his aunt Bev had lung cancer. He wanted to do something to help her. His first idea was to sell his photos from a lemonade-type stand in front of his house in Pennsylvania. “My m om said it wouldn't work because we were not on a busy street,” Timmy explains. His next idea was to have an art show. Timmy decorated his home with candles, flowers, and white lights. Then he arranged his photos. Timmy's mom, Sheila, remembers: “Our dinin g-room table was filled, the living room — everything was filled with photos.” Friends, family, and Timmy's teachers came to the show. He raised more than $300 for cancer research that night. Aunt Bev was “very happy and excited,” he says. After a local newspaper wrote a story about Timmy's photos, a volunteer offered to help him set up a website. As people learned about his cause, called Camera for a Cure, Timmy began receiving invitations to sell his pictures at art galleries and fund-raisers. Since then, his work has appeared in more than 20 shows. When Timmy is at a show, he greets each customer and talks about what he was thinking when he took his photos. And he always shares facts about lung cancer. Sometimes donations and sales are slow, but that does n't bother him. “It doesn't matter how much money we made because we just raised awareness,” he says.Timmy knows that finding a cure for lung cancer will take time and effort. For almost 100 years, the 20,310-foot Alaskan peak has been identified on most maps as Mount McKinley. Its name is now officially Denali. This “new” official name isn't really new at all. Obama changed the mountain's name to Denali because, for generations, that's what people in Alaska have called it. The Athabascan people, a Native Alaskan group, named the peak Denali long ago. It means “high one” or “great one.”“We are officially renaming the mountain Denali in recognition of the traditions of Alaska Natives and the strong support of the people of Alaska,” said U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell.Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski praised Obama's move. “I'd like to thank the president for working with us to achieve this significant change to show honor, respect, and gratitude to the Athabascan people of Alaska,” she said. The name Mount McKinley got its start in 1896. At that time, there was a gold rush going on in Alaska. A gold prospector (勘探者) wanted to honor William McKinley of Ohio, who had just been nominated (提名) to run for U.S. president. McKinley would go on to become the nation's 25th president. He was killed in 1901, six months into his second term as president. The U.S. Congress made the name Mount McKinley official in 1917.Native Alaskans were insulted (侮辱) by the name change. The result has been a political tug-of-war between Alaska and Ohio. Since 1975, Alaska politicians have pushed Congress to change the name back to Denali. Now that President Obama has changed the name, some people in Ohio are very unhappy. “Thispolitical change is insulting t o all Ohioans,” said Congressman Bob Gibbs, who is from that state.Denali also made news this week for another reason: U.S. officials decreased its official height by 10 feet. The United States Geological Survey announced that Denali is 20,310 feet high, not 20,320 as previously thought. The mountain has not shrunk (萎缩). Advances in technology allowed scientists to take more accurate measurements of it.28. Why has the U.S. government renamed its tallest mountain?A. To end a long political debate.B. To show respect for Alaska Natives.C. To remember the nation's 25th president.D. To officially identify the mountain's name on maps.29. What's Ohioans' attitude towards the new name of Mount McKinley?A. Excited.B. Amazed.C. Puzzled.D. Disappointed.30. What do we know about Mount Denali?A. It is actually 20,310 feet in height.B. It was found by a gold prospector.C. It was originally named McKinley.D. It isn't North America's tallest mountain.31. What would be the best title for the text?A. A political tug-of-warB. From McKinley to DenaliC. The tallest mountain foundD. In honor of William McKinleyDThe idea of robot rulers, friends and lovers has been a topic of science fiction novels for years. But according to one mathematical model of how our brains create consciousness, emotional machines will never exist. This is because computers can't handle any process that completely integrates (整合) infor-mation, so they cannot be conscious or feel, one expert says.A mathematical model for consciousness, developed by Giulio Tononi at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, says that the ability to integrate information is a key feature of con-sciousness.He believes that integrated information can't be broken down into smaller pieces in conscious minds, because the brain contextualizes (将……融入背景) information. For example, when we see a red circle our brains don't see the shape as a colourless circle plus a shapeless coloured area, New Scientist reported. Instead we see it as a whole —a red circle; we understand the “wider picture”.It's easy enough for machines to edit a collection of individual images (图像), but memories are made up of a bank of intertwined (相互交织的) images and experiences and cannot be changed in the same way.Researchers have used mathematics to show that computers cannot handle the complex processes needed to fit pieces of information together perfectly. Therefore, if consciousness is based on the integration of lots of pieces of information, computers can't be conscious and can't experience emotions like humans.Professor Phil Maguire of the National University of Ireland in Maynooth says that consciousness cannot be created in a physical machine in limited time using limited memory.“It doesn't necessarily mean that there is some magic going on in the brain that involves some forces that can't be explained physically. It is just so complex that it's beyond our abilities to change it,” he said. His research may mean that lonely humans will not find love with a robot; they are unlikely to be made their slaves either.32. Why do experts think emotional machines won't exist?A. Machines can't solve problems.B. Machines can't handle information.C. Machines can't integrate information.D. Machines can't communicate with people.33. The example mentioned in Paragraph 6 is used to show _____.A. machines cannot feelB. the brain has consciousnessC. the brain can contextualize informationD. machines can recognize shapes and colours34. It can be learned from the text that _____.A. machines can edit intertwined imagesB. the idea of robot lovers won't come trueC. robots can fit pieces of information together perfectlyD. computers can experience emotions like humans one day35. What would be the best title for the text?A. How robots workB. Robots will never have feelingsC. Will robots become people's friends?D. What will robots be like in the future?第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
