The arugula (芝麻菜) was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roast chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with a dinner invitation.I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, the arugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; I could have made six salads with what I threw out.In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, “food waste goes against the moral grain,” as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month’s cover story. It’s jaw-dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown away -- from “ugly” (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to large amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and other resources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem. In fact, Roytewrites, “if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world.”If tha t’s hard to understand, let’s keep it as simple as the arugula at the back of my refrigerator. Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time -- but for him, it’s more like 12 boxes of donated strawberries nearing their last days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington. D.C., which recovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered more than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished (有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And the strawberries? Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use in meals down the road.Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don’t think. “Everyone can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more food than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not include the side dish you won’t eat.” Curtin says.24. What does the author want to show by telling the arugula story?A. We pay little attention to food waste.B. We waste food unintentionally at times.C. We waste more vegetables than meat.D. We have good reasons for wasting food.25. What is a consequence of food waste according to the text?A. Moral decline.B. Environmental harm.C. Energy shortage.D. Worldwide starvation.26. What does Curtin’s company do?A. It produces kitchen equipment.B. It turns rotten arugula into clean fuel.C. It helps local farmers grow fruits.D. It makes meals out of unwanted food.27. What does Curtin suggest people do?A. Buy only what is needed.B. Reduce food consumption.C. Go shopping once a week.D. Eat in restaurants less often.CThe elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely. The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people’s wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school.“I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed.“It’s good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.”There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide.Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: “Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.”Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: “We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents througha shared interest and creative activities.”28. What is the purpose of the project?A. To ensure harmony in care homes.B. To provide part-time jobs for the aged.C. To raise money for medical research.D. To promote the elderly people’s welfare.29. How has the project affected Ruth Xavier?A. She has learned new life skills.B. She has gained a sense of achievement.C. She has recovered her memory.D. She has developed a strong personality.30. It needs to be more creative.C. It is highly profitable.D. It takes ages to see the results.DHuman speech contains more than 2,000 different sounds, from the common “m”and “a” to the rare clicks of some southern African languages. But why are certain sounds more common than others? A ground-breaking, five-year study shows that diet-related changes in human bite led to new speech sounds that are now found in half the world’s languages.More than 30 years ago, the scholar Charles Hockett noted that speech sounds called labiodentals, such as “f” and “v”, were more common in the languages of societies that ate softer foods. Now a team of researchers led by Damián Blasi at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, has found how and why this trend arose. They discovered that the upper and lower front teeth of ancient human adults were aligned (对齐), making it hard to produce labiodentals, which are formed by touching the lower lip to the upper teeth. Later, our jaws changed to an overbite structure (结构), making it easier to produce such sounds. The team showed that this change in bite was connected with the development of agriculture in the Neolithic period. Food became easier to chew at this point. The jawbone didn’t have to do as much work and so didn’t grow to be so large.Analyses of a language database also confirmed that there was a global change in the sound of world languages after the Neolithic age, with the use of “f”and “v”increasing remarkably during the last few thousand years. These sounds are still not found in the languages of many hunter-gatherer people today. This research overturns the popular view that all human speech sounds were present when human beings evolved around 300,000 years ago. “The set of speech sounds we use has not necessarily remained stable since the appearanceof human beings, but rather the huge variety of speech sounds that we find today is the product of a complex interplay of things like biological change and cultural evolution,”said Steven Moran, a member of the research team.32. Which aspect of the human speech sound does Damián Blasi’s research focus on?A. Its variety.B. Its distribution.C. Its quantity.D. Its development.33. Why was it difficult for ancient human adults to produce labiodentals?A. They had fewer upper teeth than lower teeth.B. They could not open and close their lips easily.C. Their jaws were not conveniently structured.D. Their lower front teeth were not large enough.34. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?A. Supporting evidence for the research results.B. Potential application of the research findings.C. A further explanation of the research methods.D. A reasonable doubt about the research process.35. What does Steven Moran say about the set of human speech sounds?A. It is key to effective communication.B. It contributes much to cultural diversity.C. It is a complex and dynamic system.D. It drives the evolution of human beings.第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分。

(一)(2021·江苏)People select news in expectation of a reward. This reward may be either of two kinds. One is related to what Freud calls the Pleasure Principle, the other to what he calls the Reality Principle. For want of better names,we shall call these two classes immediate re w ard and delayed re w ard.In general, the kind of news which may be expected to give immediate reward are news of crime and corruption, accidents and disasters, sports, social events, and human interest.Delayed reward may be expected from news of public affairs, economic matters, social problems, science, education, and health.News of the first kind pays its rewards at once.A reader can enjoy an indirect experience without any of the dangers or stresses involved. He can tremble wildly at an axemurder, shake his head sympathetically and safely at a hurricane, identify himself with the winning team, laugh understandingly at a warm little story of children or dogs.News of the second kind, however, pays its rewards later. It sometimes requires the reader to tolerate unpleasantness or annoyance—as,for example, when he reads of the threatening foreign situation, the mounting national debt, rising taxes, falling market, scarce housing, and cancer. It has a kind of “threat value”.It is read so that the reader may be informed and prepared. When a reader selects delayed reward news,he pulls himself into the world of surrounding reality to which he can adapt himself only by hard work. When he selects news of the other kind,he usually withdraws from the world of threatening reality toward the dream world. For any individual,of course, the boundaries of these two classes are not stable. For example,a sociologist may read news of crime as a social problem, rather than for its immediate reward.A coach may read a sports story for its threat value:he may have to play that team next week.A politician may read an account of his latest successful public meeting, not for its delayed reward, but very much as his wife reads an account of a party. In any given story of corruption or disaster,a thoughtful reader may receive not only the immediate reward of indirect experience, but also the delayed reward of information and preparedness. Therefore, while the division of categories holds in general,an individual’s tendency may transfer any story from one kind of reading to another,or divide the experience between the two kinds of reward.(二)(2022·江苏)The expression,“everybody’s doing it,” is very much at the center of the concept of peer pressure. It is a strong influence of a group, especially of children,on members of that group to behave as everybody else does.It can be positive or negative. Most people experience it in some way during their lives.People are social creatures by nature, and so it is hardly surprising that part of their selfrespect comes from the approval of others. This instinct(天性) is why the approval of peers,or the fear of disapproval,is such a powerful force in many people’s lives. It is the same instinct that drives people to dress one way at home and another way at work,or to answer “fine” when a stranger asks “how are you?” even if it is not necessarily true. There is a practical aspect to this:it helps society to function efficiently, and encourages a general level of selfdiscipline that simplifies daytoday interaction. For certain individuals, seeking social acceptance is so important that it becomes like an addiction;in order to satisfy the desire, they may go so far as to abandon their sense of right and wrong.Teens and young adults may feel forced to use drugs,or join gangs that encourage criminal behavior.Mature adults may sometimes feel pressured to cover up illegal activity at the company where they work,or end up in debt because they are unable to hold back the desire to buy a house or car that they can’t afford in an effort to “keep up with the Joneses.”However, peer pressure is not always negative.A student whose friends are good at academics may be urged to study harder and get good grades.Players on a sports team may feel driven to play harder in order to help the team win. This type of influence can also get a friend off drugs,or to help an adult take up a good habit or drop a bad one.Study groups and class projects are examples of positive peer groups that encourage people to better themselves.Schools try to teach kids about the dangers of negative peer pressure. They teach kids to stand up and be themselves, and encourage them to politely decline to do things that they believe are wrong.Similarly,it can be helpful to encourage children to greet the beneficial influence of positive peer groups.(三)(2021·江苏)Quiet Virtue:The ConscientiousThe everyday signs of conscientiousness(认真尽责)—being punctual, careful in doing work, selfdisciplined, and scrupulous(一丝不苟的) in attending to responsibilities—are typical characteristics of the model organizational citizen, the people who keep things running as they should. They follow the rules, help out,and are concerned about the people they work with. It’s the conscientious worker who helps newcomers or updates people who return after an absence, who gets to work on time and never abuses sick leaves, who always gets things done on deadline.Conscientiousness is a key to success in any field. In studies of job performance, outstanding effectiveness for almost all jobs, from semiskilled labor to sales and management, depends on conscientiousness. It is particularly important for outstanding performance in jobs at the lower levels of an organization:the secretary whose message taking is perfect, the delivery truck driver who is always on time.Among sales representatives for a large American car manufacturer, those who were most conscientious had the largest volume of sales.Conscientiousness also offers a buffer(缓冲)against the threat of job loss in today’sconstantly changing market, because employees with this quality are among the most valued. For the sales representatives, their level of conscientiousness mattered almost as much as their sales in determining who stayed on.There is an air around highly conscientious people that makes them seem even better than they actuallyare.Their reputation for dependability influences managers’ evaluations of their work, giving them higher evaluations than objective measures of their performance would predict. But conscientiousness in the absence of social skills can lead to problems.Since conscientious people demand so much of themselves, they can hold other people to their own standards, and so be overly judgmental when others don’t show the same high levels of model behavior.Factory workers in Great Britain and the United States who were extremely conscientious, for example, tended to criticize coworkers even about failures that seemed unimportant to those they criticized, which damaged their relationships. When conscientiousness takes the form of living up to expectations,it can discourage creativity. In creative professions like art or advertising, openness to wild ideas and spontaneity(自发性)are scarce and in demand.Success in such occupations calls for a balance, however;without enough conscientiousness to follow through, people become mere dreamers, with nothing to show for their imaginativeness.

[篇章一]Microwave OvensMicrowave ovens have made our lives easier and more convenient. The use of microwave ovens has become an essential part of our daily routines, making heating and cooking much quicker and simpler. However, there are some myths and misconceptions about microwave ovens that need to be clarified.Myth 1: Microwaving food removes its nutrients.Fact: Microwaves heat food by producing energy waves that penetrate the food and produce heat. Like conventional ovens, microwaves do not remove nutrients from food. In fact, because of the shorter cooking time, microwaves can help to retain more nutrients in the food.Myth 2: Microwaving food is harmful to your health.Fact: Microwaving food is not harmful as long as appropriate microwave-safe containers are used. Plastic containers that are not labeled as microwave-safe can release harmful substances when heated and may contaminate the food. Always use containers that are specifically designed for microwave use.Myth 3: Microwaving food causes cancer.Fact: There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that microwaving food causes cancer. Microwaves produce non-ionizing radiation, which is different from ionizing radiation that can cause cancer. As long as the microwave is in good working condition and used properly, it is safe to use.[篇章二]Online LearningOnline learning has gained popularity in recent years, especially with the advancements of technology and the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in school closures. While online learning offers convenience and flexibility, there are various factors that need to be considered.1. Internet Reliability: One of the main challenges of online learning is the reliance on internet connectivity. Students need a stable internet connection to access online materials, participate in virtual classes, and submit assignments. Therefore, it is crucial to have a reliable and fast internet connection for a smooth online learning experience.2. Self-Discipline: Online learning requires a high level of self-discipline and time management. Without a physical classroom and a teacher present, students need to be self-motivated to complete assignments and participate in discussions. It is important to create a designated study space and set a schedule to stay organized and focused.3. Interaction and Engagement: Online learning can sometimes feel isolating and lacks the face-to-face interaction with classmates and teachers. To overcome this, online learning platforms often provide discussion forums and virtual group projects to encourage interaction and collaboration. Active participation and engagement are essential for a fulfilling online learning experience.4. Technical Issues: Technical problems such as computer crashes or software compatibility can disrupt online learning. It is recommended to have a backup plan in case of technical difficulties, such as saving files in multiple locations and keeping contact information of technical support services. In conclusion, while online learning offers convenience and flexibility, students need to be aware of the challenges and take necessary steps to ensure a successful online learning experience.[篇章三]Reducing Food WasteFood waste is a significant global issue that not only affects the economy but also has negative environmental and social impacts. Reducing food waste is crucial in promoting sustainability and addressing food security. Here are some effective ways to reduce food waste:1. Meal Planning: Plan meals in advance and make a shopping list based on the planned meals. This helps to avoid buying excess food that may eventually go to waste. By knowing what ingredients are needed, it is easier to use them before they spoil.2. Proper Storage: Learn how to store different types of food to prolong their freshness. Understanding the shelf life of fruits, vegetables, and pantryitems can help prevent them from becoming waste. Proper storage techniques include refrigeration, freezing, and using airtight containers.3. Composting: Instead of throwing away organic waste such as fruit peels and vegetable scraps, consider composting. Composting is a natural process that turns food waste into nutrient-rich compost, which can be usedin gardens or for plant growth.4. Donating: If you have excess food that cannot be consumed before it spoils, consider donating it to local food banks or charities. Many organizations accept non-perishable and perishable food items to distributeto those in need.By implementing these strategies, individuals can significantly contribute to reducing food waste and promoting a more sustainable future.以上是2022年江苏卷高考英语阅读题的真题解析。

But when it comes toembryonic learning <胎教>, birds could rule the roost. Asrecently reported in The Auk:Ornithological Advances, somemother birds may teach their young to sing even before theyhatch <孵化>.New-born chicks can then imitate their mom’s callwithin a few days of entering the world. This educational method was first observed in 2022 bySonia Kleindorfer, a biologist at Flinders University inSouthAustralia, and her colleagues. Female Australian superb fairy wrens were found to repeat one soundover and over again while hatching their eggs. When the eggs were hatched, the baby birds madethe similar chirp to their mothers—a sound that served as their regular "feed me!"call. To find out if the special quality was more widespread in birds, the researchers sought the red-backed fairy wren, another species of Australian songbird. First they collected sound data from 67nests in four sites in Queensland before and after hatching. Then they identified begging calls byanalyzing the order and number of notes. A computer analysis blindly compared calls produced bymothers and chicks, ranking them by similarity. It turns out that baby red-backed fairy wrens also emerge chirping like their moms. And themore frequently mothers had called to their eggs, the more similar were the babies’ begging calls. Inaddition, the team set up a separate experiment that suggested that the baby birds that most closelyimitated their mom’s voice were rewarded with the most food. This observation hints that effective embryonic learning could signal neurological <神经系统的> strengthsof children to parents. An evolutionary inference can then be drawn."As a parent, doyou invest in quality children, or do you invest in children that are in need?"Kleindorfer asks. "Ourresults suggest that they mightbe going for quality."58.The underlined phrase in Paragraph 1 means"__________".A. be the worstB. be the bestC. be the as badD. be just as good59. What are Kleindorfer’s findings based on?A. Similarities between the calls of moms and chicks.B. The observation of fairy wrens across Australia.C. The data collected from Queensland’s locals.D. Controlled experiments on wrens and other birds.60. Embryonic learning helps mother birds to identify the baby birds which __________.A. can receive quality signalsB. are in need of trainingC. fit the environment betterD. make the loudest callCA new commodity brings about a highly profitable,fast-growing industry, urging antitrust〔反垄断〕regulatorsto step in to check those who control its flow. A century ago,the resource in question was oil.Now similar concerns are being raised by the giants 〔巨头〕that deal in data, the oil of the digital age. The most valuable firms are Google,Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft. All look unstoppable.Such situations have led to calls for the tech giants to be broken up.But size alone is not a crime. The giants’success has benefited consumers.Few want to live without search engines or a quick delivery.Far from charging consumers high prices, many of these services are free <users pay, in effect, by handing over yet more data>. And the appearance of new-born giants suggests that newcomers can make waves, too.But there is cause for concern. The Internet has made data abundant,all-present and far more valuable, changing the nature of data and competition. Google initially used the data collected from users to target advertising better. But recently it has discovered that data can be turned into new services: translation and visual recognition, to be sold to other companies. Internet companies’ control of data gives them enormous power. So they have a "God’s eye view"of activities in their own markets and beyond. This nature of data makes the antitrust measures of the past less useful. Breaking up firms like Google intofive small ones would not stop remaking themselves: in time, one of them would become great again. A rethink is required—and as a new approach starts to become apparent, two ideas stand out.The first is that antitrust authorities need to move from the industrial age into the 21st century. When considering a merger<兼并>,for example, they have traditionally used size to determine when to step in. They now need to take into account the extent of firms’data assets<资产>when assessing the impact of deals. The purchase price could also be a signal that an established company is buying a new-born threat. When this takes place, especially when a new-born company has no revenue to speak of, the regulators should raise red flags. The second principle is to loosen the control that providers of on-line services have over data and give more to those who supply them panies could be forced to consumers what information they hold and how many money they make form it. Governments could order the sharing of certain kinds of data, with users’ consent.Restarting antitrust for the information age will not be easy. But if governments don’t want a data economy controlled by a few giants, they must act soon.61.Why is there a call to break up giants?A. They have controlled the data market.B. They collect enormous private data.C. They no longer provide free services.D. They dismissed some new-born giants.62.What does the technological innovation in Paragraph 3 indicate?A. Data giants’ technology is very expensive.B. Google’s idea is popular among data firms.C. Data can strengthen giants’ controlling position.D. Data can be turned into new services or products.63. By paying attention to firms’ data assets, antitrust regulators could__________.A. kill a new threatB. avoid the size trapC. favour bigger firmsD. charge higher prices64. What is the purpose of loosening the giants’ control of data?A. Big companies could relieve data security pressure.B. Governments could relieve their financial pressure.C. Consumers could better protect their privacy.D. Small companies could get more opportunities.DOld Problem,New ApproachesWhile clean energy is increasingly used in our daily life, global warming will continue for some decades emissions 〔排放〕peak. So even if emissions were to begin to decrease today, we would still face the after CO2challenge of adapting to climate change. Here I will stress some smarter and more creative examples of climate adaptation. When it comes to adaptation, it is important to understand that climate change is a process. We are therefore not talking about adapting to a new standard, but to a constantly shifting set of conditions. This is why, in part at least, the US National Climate Assessment says that: "There is no ‘one-size fits all’ adaptation."Nevertheless, there are some actions that offer much and carry little risk or cost.Around the world, people are adapting in surprising ways, especially in some poor countries.Floods have become more damaging in Bangladesh in recent decades. Mohammed Rezwan saw opportunity where others sawonly disaster. His not-for-profit organization runs 100 river boats that serve as floating libraries, schools, and health clinics, and are equipped with solar panels and other communicating facilities. Rezwan is creating floating connectivity 〔连体〕to replace flooded roads and highways. But he is also working at a far more fundamental level: his staff show people how to make floating gardens and fish ponds prevent starvation during the wet season.Elsewhere in Asia even more astonishing actions are being taken. ChewangNorphel lives in a mountainous region in India, where he is known as the Ice Man.The loss of glaciers<冰川>there due to global warming represents an enormous threat to agriculture. Without the glaciers, water will arrive in the rivers at times when it can damage crops. Norphel’s inspiration came from seeing the waste of water over winter, when it was not needed. He directed the wasted water into shallow basins where it froze, and was stored until the spring. His fields of ice supply perfectly timed irrigation<灌溉> water. Having created nine such ice reserves,Norphel calculates that he has stored about 200, 000m3 of water. Climate change is a continuing process, so Norphel’s ice reserves will not last forever. Warming will overtake them. But he is providing a few years during which the farmers will, perhaps, be able to find other means of adapting.Increasing Earth’s reflectiveness can cool the planet. In southern Spain the sudden increase of greenhouses <which reflect light back to space> has changed the warming trend locally, and actually cooled the region. While Spain as a whole is heating up quickly, temperatures near the greenhouses have decreased. This example should act as an inspiration for all cities. By painting buildings white, cities may slow down the warming process. In Peru, local farmers around a mountain with a glacier that has already fallen victim to climate change have begun painting the entire mountain peak white in the hope that the added reflectiveness will restore the life-givingthe planet".More ordinary forms of adaptation are happening everywhere. A friend of mine owns an area of land in western Victoria.Over five generations the land has been too wet for cropping. But during the past decade declining rainfall has allowed him to plant highly profitable crops. Farmers in many countries are also adapting like this—either by growing new produce, or by growing the same things differently. This is common sense. But some suggestions for adapting are not. When the polluting industries argue that we’ve lost the battle to control carbon pollution and have no choice but to adapt, it’s a nonsense designed to make the case for business as usual.Human beings will continue to adapt to the changing climate in both ordinary and astonishing ways. But the most sensible form of adaptation is surely to adapt our energy systems to emit less carbon pollution. After all, if we adapt in that way, we may avoid the need to change in so many others.65. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 implies __________.A. adaptation is an ever-changing processB. the cost of adaptation varies with timeC. global warming affects adaptation formsD. adaptation to climate change is challenging66. What is special with regard to Rezwan’s project?A. The project receives government support.B. Different organizations work with each other.C. His organization makes the best of a bad situation.D. The project connects flooded roads and highways.67. What did the Ice Man do to reduce the effect of global warming?A. Storing ice for future use.B. Protecting the glaciers from melting.C. Changing the irrigation time.D. Postponing the melting of the glaciers.68. What do we learn from the Peru example?A. White paint is usually safe for buildings.B. The global warming tread cannot be stopped.C. This country is heating up too quickly.D. Sunlight reflection may relieve global warming.69. According to the author, polluting industries should __________.A. adapt to carbon pollutionB. plant highly profitable cropsC. leave carbon emission aloneD. fight against carbon pollution70. What ’s the author ’s preferred solution to global warming?A. Setting up a new standard.B. Reducing carbon emission.C. Adapting to climate change.D. Monitoring polluting industries.第四部份:任务型阅读〔共 10 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 10 分〕请阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词.Population ChangeWhy is the world ’s population growing ?The answer is not what you might think. The reason for the explosion is not that people have been reproducing like rabbits, but that people have stopped dropping dead like flies. In 1900,people died at the average age of 30.By 2000 the average age was 65.But while increasing health was a tupical feature of the 20th century, declining birth rate could be a defining one of the 21st .Statistics show that the average number of births per woman has fallen from 4.9 in the early 1960s to 2.5 owadays.Furthermore, around 50% of the world ’s population live in regions where the figure is now below the replacement level<i.e.2. 1 births per woman>and almost all developed nations are experiencing sub -repalanement birth rate. You might think that developing nations would make up the loss<especially since80% of the world ’s people now live in such nations>,but you ’d be wrong,Declining birth rate is a major problem in many developing regions too, which might cause catastrophic global shortages of work force within a few decades.A great decline in young work force is likely to occur in China, forinstance. What does it imply?First,China needs to undergo rapid economic development before a population decline hits the country.Sencond,if other factors such as technology remain constant, economic growth and material expectations will fall well below recent standards and this could invite trouble.Russia is another country with population problems that could break its economic promise.Since 1992 the number of people dying has been biggen than that of those being born by a massive 50%,Indeed official figures suggest the country has shrunk by 5% since 1993 and people in Russia live a shorter life now than those in 1961.Why is this occurring?Nobody is quite sure, but poor diet an above all long -time alcoholism have much to do with it.If current trends don ’t bend.Russia ’s population will be about the size of Yemen ’s by the year 2050.In the north of india, the population is booming due to high birth rates, but in the south, where most econmoic development is taking place, birth rate is falling rapidly. In a further twist, birth rate is highest in poorly educated rural arceas an lowest in highly educated urban areas. In total,25% of India ’s working -age population has no education. In 2030,a sixth of the country ’s potential work force could be totally uneducated. One solution is obviously to import foreign workers via immigration. As for the USA,it is almost unique among developed nations in having a population that is expected to grow by 20% from 2022-2030,Moreover,the USA has a track record of successfully accepting immigrants. As a result it ’s likely to see a rise in the size of its.. 注意:请将答案写在答题卡上相应题号的横线上.每一个空格只填一个单词.[写作内容]1.用约30 个单词概述柱状图信息的主要内容;2.我国电影票房收入变化的原因有哪些,简要谈谈你的看法〔上述对话仅供参考,原因不少于两点〕; Mother:And the price..We have to pay 50 yuan a ticket Son:Only 10 yuan more than last year. However, that increase slowed down in 2022.The reasons behind this are various. The fast economic development before 2022 was probably the mostpowerful engine driving the constant growth in the box -office income. The application of new technologies and the wide appeal of movie stars could also account for the increase. However, China saw a decline in its economic growth rate last year. And the internet increased options for movie lovers. Consequently, some viewers began to turn away from cinemas, leading to a slower growth.China ’s economy is expected to grow at a medium speed in the coming years, so an increase is possible in the investment in the movie industry and the number of quality movies. Therefore, its box -office income will probably enjoy a slight increase. <150 words>22. B 32. D 42. D 52. D21. A 31. C 41. A 51. A23.D 33.B 43.C53.B24.C 34.A 44.B 54.B71. lower76. earlier3.C 13.A56. So the government found a very clever way to try and drive them off the roads.Back in 1861, a previous government had passed a law about the heavy steam vehicles which were beginning to crawl about the roads of Britain. Four years later these speed limits were reduced to 4 and 2 m.p.h. and a man with a red flag had to walk in front to warn people of the danger. This law applied to(适用于) ordinary cars, too, and the police started to arrest drivers who broke the speed limit and didn’t have a man with a red flag. Of course, it made the idea of motor cars seem quite ridiculous. But this stupid law was stopped in 1878 and the speed limit was raised to the frightening speed of 14 m.p.h. in 1896. A special race was held from London to Brighton to celebrate this victory for the motor car industry. The London-Brighton Veteran Car Run is still held every November to mark this event. Only cars made before 1905 may take part. In the first rally there were no more than 33 entrants, and only 22 of them finished the course. Nowadays, so many old cars apply to go on the run that the organizers have had to restrict the entry.Early motorists had to carry their own spare parts and do their own repairs. If they had a real breakdown, the only chance of getting anywhere was to borrow a horse and hitch it to the front of the car!1.What do the first two paragraphs mainly tell us?A.The heavy steam vehicles appeared as early as 1861.B.The British government tried to do away with motor cars.C.No one liked motor cars when they first appeared.D.The first car drivers had to pay attention to the speed limits.2.. Learning these skills changed your life forever and opened up new horizons. Learning about computers can be like learning how to ride a bike or drive a car. Once you have invested the time to master the skills, you will never go back to the old days. The new technology is simply too convenient and too powerful.Technological developments through the years have enabled us to do more with less effort. We have continuously looked for better ways of doing things. Each invention and new development has allowed us to extend our capabilities. Today we see one of the most dramatic technologies ever developed--the computer. It extends the capabilities of our minds.Computers have saved organizations millions of dollars. Furthermore, these same computer systems have opened up new opportunities that would have gone undiscovered or neglected. The computer may multiply what we can do, and the return on investment is high. The growth of computer usage is surprising. On the other hand, the computer can do serious damage. Invasion of privacy (侵犯隐私),fraud (欺诈), and computer-related mistakes are just a few shocking examples. The computer is like a double-edged sword. It has the ability to cut us free from some activities, but it can also cut deep into profits, personal privacy, and our society in general. How it is used is not a function of technology. It is strictly a function of how people decide to use or misuse this new technology. The choice is yours, and only through knowledge of computer systems will you be able to avoid the dangers while enjoying the many, many benefits of the computer age.5. The writer thinks learning about computers is like learning how to ride a bike or drive a carbecause____________.A. it is simple and practicalB. it needs a lot of practiceC. it leads people to new life experiencesD. it takes much time to master the skills6. According to the passage, computers bring people the following benefitsEXCEPT_______________.A. avoiding mistakesB. saving moneyC. making moneyD. opening up opportunities7. According to the writer, the bad effects of computers can be avoided if we_____________.A. have some knowledge of computer systemsB. tell people not to misuse computersC. have strict rules over the use of computersD. make more investments in the technology8. This passage is probably written for_____________.A. computersB. computer producersC. computer learnersD. computer programmersCMeeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries --- like the UK or France --- people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment (多元文化环境) will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.9. In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to _______.A. develop closer relationsB. share the same cultureC. get to know each otherD. keep each other company10. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _________.A. the English prefer to make long speechesB. too many words are of no useC. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by natureD. even talk and silence can be culturally different11. According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?A. By sharing different ways of life.B. By accepting different habits.C. By recognizing different values.D. By speaking each other' s languages.12. What would be the best title for the text?A. Multicultural Environment.B. Cross-Cultural Differences.C. How to Understand Each Other.D. How to Build Up a Relationship.。

2022高考英语阅读理解练习题(译林牛津、江苏专版)阅读明白得ACulture is one of the most challenging elements of the international marketplace. This system of learned behavior patterns characteristic of the members of a given society is constantly shaped by a set of dynamic variables: language, religion, values and attitudes, manners and customs, aesthetics, technology, education, and social institutions. To cope with this system, an international manager needs both factual and interpretive knowledge of culture. To some extent, the factual knowledge can be learned; its interpretation comes only through experience. The most complicated problems in dealing with the cultural environment stem from the fact that one cannot learn culture—one has to live it. Two schools of thought exist in the business world on how to deal with cultural diversity. One is that business is business the world around, following the model of Pepsi and McDonald’s. In some cases, globalization is a fact of life; however, cultural differences are still far from converging. The other school proposes that companies must tailor business approaches to individual cultures. Setting up policies and procedures in each country has been compared to an organ transplant; the critical question centers around acceptance or rejection. The major challenge to the international manager is to make sure that rejection is not a result of cultural myopia or even blindness.Fortune examined the international performance of a dozen large companies that earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseas. The internationally successful companies all share an important quality: patience. They have not rushed into situations but rather built their operations carefully by following the most basic business principles. These principles are to know your adversary, know your audience, and know your customer.56. According to the passage, which of the following is true?A. All international managers can learn culture.B. Business diversity is not necessary.C. Views differ on how to treat culture in business world.D. Most people do not know foreign culture well.57. According to the author, the model of Pepsi ______.A. is in line with the theories of the school advocating the business is business the world around B. is different from the m odel of McDonald’sC. shows the reverse of globalizationD. has converged cultural differences58. The two schools of thought______ .A. both propose that companies should tailor business approaches to individual culturesB. both advocate that different policies be set up in different countriesC. admit the existence of cultural diversity in business worldD. Both Aand B59. This article is supposed to be most useful for those________ .A. who are interested in researching the topic of cultural diversityB. who have connections to more than one type of cultureC. who want to travel abroadD. who want to run business on International Scale60. According to Fortune, successful international companies ______.A. earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseasB. all have the quality of patienceC. will follow the overseas local culturesD. adopt the policy of internationalizationBHusband and wife by ArrangementSome Japanese still get married by parents’ arrangement. Yoshio and Hirom i Tanaka, a young Japanese couple living in the United States, told the story of their arranged marriage. “We didn’t marry for love in the western sense. We got married in the traditional Japanese way. Our parents arranged our marriage through a matchmaker(媒人). In Japan we believe that marriage is something affecting the whole family rather than a matter concerning only the young couple. So we think it is very important to match people according to their social background, education and so on. When our parents thought it was time for us to get married, they went to a local matchmaker and asked her for some suggestions. We discuss the details and looked at the photos she sent, and then our parents asked her to arrange a marriage interview for the two of us.A Japanese marriage interview is held in a public place, such as a hotel or a restaurant, and is attended by the boy and the girl, their parents and the matchmaker. Information about the couple and their families is exchanged over a cup of tea or a meal. Then the boy and the girl are left alone for a short time to get to know each other. When they returned home they have to tell the matchmaker whether they want to meet again or not.Yoshio continued, “When our parents realized we were serious about eac h other, they started to make arrangements for our wedding. My family paid the marriage money to Hiromi’s. This is money to help pay for the wedding ceremony and for setting up the house afterwards. We also gave her family a beautiful ornament to put in the best room of their house, so everyone knew that Hiromi was going to marry.”61.The Japanese think of the marriage of a young couple as .A.a sign showing the love between themB.an opportunity for their parents to show their love for their childrenC.a private affair for the boy and the girlD.an important matter having influence on the whole family62.In arranging a marriage in Japan, the matchmaker plays all of the following roles except . A.making arrangements for the weddingB.providing the information the family needC.arranging the marriage interviewD.attending the marriage interview63.According to the passage, the best time to make arrangement for the wedding is . A.when the young couple agree to meet againB.when the young couple are sincere about their relationC.when the parents think it is time for their children to get married.D.when the parents are well-informed about each other’s family64.According to the passage, what plays the most important role in the matching of young people in Japan? .A.Their parents’ attitude B.Their family backgroundC.Their occupation D.Their love for each otherCBeing a good parent is harder now than it has ever been before. In pressurized modern lives, demands to be a fulfilled individual, a good partner and a good worker, take no account of being a good parent. We haven’t left space for the nurturing parents who are expected to provide what children need. As a result, many families in the western world jus t don’t work.Something will have to change. With luck, people in the future will only have children if they really want them. That should mean parenthood is seen as a much more positive promise than itis now, that parents are socially supported, and are admired for doing a good job.The problem is that in the last generation or so we’ve come to assume that women should want and be able to do everything that by tradition men have done at the same time as pretty well at everything that by tradition women have done. And it’s just not possible. Since adopting a male life style is demonstrably only another form of submission(顺从), quite a number of highly educated and economically privileged(优越的)women are now choosing to take career breaks so as to be at home with their children for longer than that poor 18 weeks. The most welcoming trend in parenting is that men are participating more and more, even that is not free of conflict, however. Intellectually(理智上), women want men to be equal parents and do their sha re. But there’s often a contradictory(矛盾的)emotion because children are the last fort of the female power in the family. “I want him to help me but this is my region and being better at it is one of the new things I’ve got as a female.” In truth, although t hey haven’t had generations of practice, there’s no reason why men can’t raise children as well as women. Men left to cope after bereavement or divorce, as well as some who take on the role of principal career within a partnership, are already doing it.65.Why is it more difficult today to be good parents?A. Because parents don’t want to face the pressure of rearing children.B. Because children are in dependent and don’t need to be taken care of.C. Because husbands and wives have little time to talk to each other.D. Because people want to fulfill their own dreams, leaving no time to look after children.66. We can learn from the passage that _______.A. people in future will not be as interested in children as people at presentB. parenthood will be considered as a positive commitment as it is nowC. women do better in rearing children than menD. parents will receive admiration for taking good care of children67. Nowadays, a lot of highly educated and economically privileged women ________.A. tend to stay at home for more than 18 weeksB. tend to adopt a male life styleC. tend to quit their jobs and stay at homeD. tend to be submissive wives68. It seems that in parenting , women ________.A. are contradictory in their thoughts.B.demand equality between sexesC. tend to leave children to their husbands.D. often quarrel with their husbands69. The underlined word “bereavement” in the para 4 probably means _________.A. departure of his wife.B. death of his wifeC. return of his wifeD. annoyance of his wife(三)完形填空Several years ago, while attending a communication course, I experienced a most unusual process. People won’t have enough food supplies there, and the terrible environment would make it impossible for them to live a long life. Besides, the journey won’t be safe. C an anybody explain to me just why people would go to Mars, never toreturn?Steve Minear, UKHere are the things you can think of: the desire to explore a foreign and unique environment, the excitement of being the first humans to open up a new world, the expectation of fame and glory…For scientists there is another reason. Their observations and research will probably lead to great scientific achievements.Donal Trollop, CanadaThere are already too many people on the Earth. I think that sometime before the end of the century, there will be a human colony(殖民地)on Mars. It will happen when people finally realize that two-way trips to the red planet Mars are unnecessary. Most of the danger of space Flight is in the launches(发射) and landings. Cutting the trip home would therefore reduce the danger of accidents, save a lot of money, and open the way to building an everlasting human settlement on another world.Enough supplies can be sent on ahead. And every two years more supplies and more people will needs, and Mars is far more pleasant than the other planets in the outer space.Paul Davies. USA21. The main purpose of Steve Minear’s writing is .A. to report his classmates’ discussionB. to invite an answer to his questionC. to explain the natural state of MarsD. to show his agreement on going to Mars22. Which of the following best states Donal Trollop’s idea?A. There is a plan to send humans to Mars.B. There are many reasons for going to Mars.C. Scientists become famous by doing research on Mars.D. It is possible to build an Earth-like environment on Mars.23. Paul Davies points out that .A. humans need only a one-way ticket to Mars.B. two-way trips to Mars will be made safe soonC. it is easy to reduce the danger and cost of flights to MarsD. it is cheap to build an everlasting human settlement on Mars24. What does Paul Davies think of human existence on Mars?A. Humans will have to bring all they need from the Earth.B. Humans will find Mars totally unsuitable for living.C. Humans can produce everything they need.D. Humans can live longer in the colony on Mars.BBeing able to multitask—doing several things at the same time—is considered a welcome skill by most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should think again. What we often see nowadays is that young people juggle an ever larger number of electronic devices(电子产品)as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPods. In a sense, they are spending a significant amount of time in fruitless efforts as they multitask.Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so much attention to their own work, they seem to have no time spend with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table.Multitasking also affects young people's performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinion of the effect of modern gadgets(器具)on their performance of tasks, many young people gave a positive response(反应). However, the response from the worlds of education and business was not quite as positive. Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later development of study skills. They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again, as modern gadgets have made it unnecessary for them to learn special skills to do their work.25. What does the underlined word “juggle” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A. Want to buyB. Take the place of.C. Use at the same timeD. Seek for information from.26. In Paragraph 3, the author points out that .A. family members do not cat at the family tableB. family member do not greet each otherC. young people live happily in their familiesD. young people seldom talk with their family members27. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Multitasking is harmful to young people’s development.B. Young people benefit a lot from modern gadgetsC. Multitasking is an important skill to young people.D. Young people must learn skills for future jobs.28. The author develops the passage mainly by .A. providing typical examplesB. following the natural time orderC. comparing opinions from different fieldsD. presenting a cause and analyzing its effectsCSeeing a volcano erupt (喷发) is a wonderful experience, and you can really feel the beat by climbing to the summit(山顶) of Pacaya for a close-up view. There are guided tours every day up this highly active volcano from Antigua. Giving travelers a chance to see Mother Nature at her most powerful.Pacaya is an easy drive from Antigua, a beautiful city with many colorful houses along its oldstreets that are turned into art-works during its Holy Week festival. No matter when you come to Antigua, you won’t miss the Pacaya-tour companies. But climbing Pacaya is no easy job: it is 2560 metres high, and reaching the summit takes two to three hours of seemingly one-step-forward and two-step-back movements. As you climb, you hear the dull sounds of eruptions high above. Steaming, hot remains from recent eruptions begin to line the path as you near the active summit; the McKenney Cone(火山锥). Just as though you were going to walk over to the edge of the cone, the road turns to the left and up to the relative safety of the old, inactive summit. Many tours are timed so that you arrive at the cone of the volcano in plenty of time for sunset and the full contrast between the erupting red lava(熔岩) and the darkening sky. On a good day the view from the summit is extremely exciting. The active mouth boils, sending red lava over its sides, and once in a while shoots hot streams up to 100 metres into the air. There is a strong bad smell in the air even if you take care to be upwind of the cone. As evening turns deeper into the night. the burning lava quietly falls down the side of the volcano. For you, too, it is time to get down .29. What is the main purpose of this passage?A. To attract tourists to Pacaya.B. To describe the beauty of Pacaya.C. To introduce guided tours to Pacaya.D.
