You Mi, a lovely and confident 17-year-old student, is the first Chinese high school student to appear on the cover of the popular young adults’ fashion magazine Seventeen.

“You is IN,” said Wang Lihua, Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen. “You is active and mature because of her knowledge on everything from academic studies, to books on art, to movies. We found she’s the very style we’re looking for to represent young people’s attitudes.”

You also impressed Wang with her fluent English when they first met last year. As the hostess of an English broadcasting programme at the High School Affiliated to Renmin University, she is always praised for speaking English almost like a native speaker. “I’ve built up my English by watching thousands of English DVDs since I was 10,” she explained.

But for her, watching isn’t enough. Last year, while in Senior 1, You met a talented boy who showed self-made DV movies at the English Corner in her school.

“I thought it was so cool and I knew that I should start making my own films,” she said. So she wrote a campus story, persuaded schoolmates to star in it and then began shooting a 30-minute DV movie, all in English. “I played one of the leading roles, actually I was everything in my film. I worked on it every single day during the SARS holidays,” she recalled. The movie finally became a big hit on campus, earning You a strong reputation as a DV movie director.

But this is not the only field she wants to master. Despite being a science student, she likes art, literature and fashion design very much.

“There are people who can be artists, there are people who edit books, and there are people who become film producers. But I just hope to mix all the things up!” she said. “There is an old saying I believe: Chance favours only the prepared mind.”

The market is a concept. If you are growing tomatoes in your backyard for sale you are producing for the market. You might sell some to your neighbor and some to the local manager of the supermarket. But in either case, you are producing for the market. Your efforts are being directed by the market. If people stop buying tomatoes, you will stop producing them.

If you take care of a sick person to earn money, you are producing for the market. If your father is a steel worker or a truck driver or a doctor or a grocer, he is producing goods or service for the market.

When you spend your income, you are buying things from the market. You may spend money in stores, supermarkets, gas station and restaurants. Still you are buying from the market. When the local grocer hires you to drive the delivery truck, he is buying your labor in the labor market.

The market may be something abstract. But for each person or business who is making and selling something, it is very concrete. “I swear, I didn’t steal anything!” I shouted over the alarm. Obviously the security guard didn’t believe me because he seized the shopping bag right out of my hand.

“Do you have a receipt of this?” he asked doubtfully, putting any new back-to-school outfit (全套设备) onto the dusty floor near the mall entrance.

“Of course I do,” I replied, fishing my wallet out of my coat pocket. Elsie and Monica, my two best friends, stood beside me. They were laughing their heads off!

I almost tore my wallet apart for the receipt, but it had disap peared. “Let me look again,” I said nervously. Then I looked again, and again, and again! My face was getting hotter by the minute, and my heart was beating like a racehorse.

Finally, I looked back at the guard and whispere d, “It’s not here.” The guard picked up my clothes and said, “You’ll have to come with me, Miss.”

When he opened the office door, I saw a man sitting behind a big metal desk. It was the manager. Then I had an idea.

“May I say something?”I asked. “I can pr o ve I didn’t steal this thing.” Then I explained all about the cashier(出纳员). She said that she had bought the exact same outfit as a birthday present for her little sister. “We’ll just see about that,” the manage r said and went off to find her. Ten minutes later, I was free!

It was terrible to be unfairly accused of something! Then I remembered shouting at my sister that very morning for taking my new hair clips.

Had she really taken them? I made a promise that day never to accuse someone of something witho ut proof, and I haven’t. At last something good came out of my terrible experience.

C. they expected the author to be caught

D. they played a trick on the author

38. We can infer the author was very ________ from the underlined part in Paragraph 4.

B. nervous

C. frightened

D. excited

The way people hold to the belief that a fun-filled, pain free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.

As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably(不可避免地) brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment, self-improvement.

Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.

Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three-day vacation.

I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

41. According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because _______.

A. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single

B. he finds more fun in dating than in marriage

C. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement

D. he is unwilling to take on family responsibilities

42. Raising children, in the author’s opinion is _________.

A. a moral duty

B. a rewarding task

C. a thankless job

D. a source of inevitable pain

43. From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes stems from _________.

A. hatred

B. prejudice

C. misunderstanding

D. ignorance

44. To understand what true happiness is one must _________.

A. have as much fun as possible during one’s lifetime

B. be able to distinguish happiness from fun

C. make every effort to liberate oneself from pain

D. put up with pain under all circumstances

45. What is the author trying to tell us?

A. Attaining happiness is necessary for everyone.

B. It is important to make commitments.

C. Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.

D. It is pain that leads to happiness.

期中英语考试卷及答案

英语期中考试试卷 Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A) People have become used to crimes now. B) With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C) People now like to read books with pictures. D) The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that _______. A) children should keep away from TV B) TV programs should be improved C) children's books should have pictures D) TV has a deep influence on the young Passage Two Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and " writing". In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer". The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer killed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in

I tried to catch her in order that I could get her out of the road. Suddenly her father came running down a hill across the road from where I had parked my car. He ran right to her and caught her up, saying "bad girl "to her. I picked up the stroller and gave it to him. The father grabbed the stroller and walked toward where he came from without a word. I went back and sat in my car for a few minutes with my son. My hands were shaking and tears were about to run out of my eyes. "Do you feel cold, Mom? "asked my son. I just shook my head.
