A man who broke his neck outdoors in freezing conditions survived lying in snow for nearly

20 hours thanks to his dog, who kept him warm through the night and barked for help.

The Michigan man, named only as Bob, was alone when he left his farmhouse on New Year’s Eve to collect firewood. Predicting a journey of only several metres, Bob was wearing just long johns, a shirt and slippers when he went outside, despite the temperature being around -4°C. However, he slipped and broke his neck.

“I was screaming for help but my nearest neighbour is about a quarter mile away and it was 10:30 pm, but my Kelsey came,” said Bob. Kelsey is Bob’s five-year-old Golden Retriever. She kept Bob warm by lying on top of him, and kept him awake by licking(舔) his hands and face. Bob said: “She kept barking for help but never left my side. She kept me warm and alert. I knew I had to persevere through this and that it was my choice to stay alive.”“By morning my vo ice was gone and I couldn’t yell for help, but Kelsey didn’t stop barking.” “She was letting out this screeching howl that alerted my neighbour. He found me at 6:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day.”

Bob’s neighbour eventually discovered him after hearing Kelsey’s howls and called the emergency services. When Bob arrived in hospital, his core temperature was below 21°C. “I was surprised to find out that I didn’t have any frost bite,” said Bob, “I am sure it was because of Kelsey’s determination to keep me warm and safe.”And to the surprise of doctors, Bob made a quick recovery from his neck injury.

“I am so thankful for my two heroes,” Bob said. “Kelsey kept me warm, alert, and never stopped barking for help. Dr Colen saved my life and ability to move. They are truly heroes and I will be eternally grateful.”

Take five colours: red, black, blue, green and purple. How do they make you feel? It’s a question of great significance to designers and marketers. British fashion designer Wayne Hemingway explored this topic in a BBC radio programme about the psychology of colour.

Red is, of course, considered fortunate in China. But he points out that it’s a powerful colour wherever you go, with some serious scientific bases. Studies have indicated tha t red “raises blood pressure”, and claim that it stands out from other colours thanks to its long wavelength. Hemingway says it ap pears to be “coming towards you”, and so is useful for emergency and alarm signs.

Black has a different sense. In the West it’s associated with death, but that hasn’t stopped it becoming a mysterious colour. Hemingway says says it’s “very powerful and sophisticated when used as a primary colour in branding.”

Blue, by contrast, is cool and peaceful. The colour is a constant presence in our lives, says Hemingway, being the colour of the sky and the sea. That gives it an air of reliability, which makes it a firm choice with “banks and corporations”. Hemingway says this is also why emergency services often choose the colour.

Green is, unsurprisingly, the colour of nature and the environment. Marketers understand that giving a product green packaging creates the impression it is enviromentally friendly. But wise customers are also aware of this—and now think twice before blindly swallowing environmental claims. Hemingway also says that green is the colour of growth and movement: it’s used to indicate ‘go’ on traffic lights.

Finally, we have purple, which is associated with valuable things. In the past, purple colour was expensive because it was very difficult to produce, and it became the colour worn by royalty in many Western countries. These days, companies still use purple to make their product seem more fashionable, whether they’re selling chocolate or cigarettes.

28. Why do people notice red first?

A. Red is associated with luck worldwide.

B. Red stands for emergency and warnings.

C. Red is the most beloved color for most people.

D. Red has a longer wavelength than most colours.

29. Which colour is associated with trust?

A. Green.

B. Black.

C. Blue.

D. Purple.

30. For what purpose are products given green packaging?

A. To show the product is more fashionable.

B. To instruct people to grow as nature does.

C. To remind that the product is very mysterious.

D. To indicate the product is environmentally friendly.

31. What could be the best title of the text?

A. The power of colours

B. The origin of colours

C. The function of colours

D. The questions about colours

Georgia Tech, a university in Atlanta in the US, provided a teaching assistant called Jill Watson for one of its courses.

Except that Jill Watson was really a robot, who helped students and answered their questions online. The only thing that students noticed was that Jill Watson answered questions and provided feedback (反馈) much more quickly than other teaching assistants. Such robotic teachers had advantages over human teachers. They were always ready to respond, they were never bored, tired or distracted.

While they could be trained to operate for a particular task or set of questions, they couldn't

easily adapt that knowledge to a different setting. There are also more slight questions about online help from a robot. Would you feel the same about positive feedback if it came from a machine rather than a person? And academic teaching is often not about "right" or "wrong" answers, but teaching how to think and investigate.

Donald Clark, a professor, said it was a mistake for anyone to think that education would be exempt from(豁免) the effect of automation. "Are we really saying that accountants, lawyers and managers can all be replaced by artificial intelligence - but not teachers? Artificial intelligence will destroy jobs - so why not use it for a social good such as learning?" he asked.

But there are experts who see this as another wave of technology over-promising. "We've been here before—with radio, television, computers, the Internet," said Stavros Yiannouka. "Technology in itself doesn't revolutionize anything. Change in education is driven by public policy decisions, he said, not computer software.”

Educating the whole person and helping them to "blossom" was not easily achieved. And more scholars doubted whether a computer could appreciate the work of a creative student who thought outside the conventional questions and answers.

32. What is the main weakness of robotic teachers?

A. They can be trained easily.

B. They can’t apply knowledge flexibly.

C. They lack ability to do special tasks.

D. They fail to answer a series of questions.

33. What is Cla rk’s attitude towards the effect of automation on education?

A. Disapproving.

B. Doubtful

C. Supportive.

D. Indifferent.

34. What can we infer from Stavros’ words?

A. Technology can change everything completely.

B. A computer may appreciate a creative idea.

C. Automation will drive changes in education.

D. The role of teacher won’t be replaced by robots.

35. Which topic does the author mainly present in the text?

A. Could robots be online tutors?

B. Will education change everything?

C. Does technology destroy many jobs?

D. Whether robots could appreciate student's answers ?

Dear Linda,

I feel greatly honored to be invited to join you for the coming Dragon Boat Festival, and I am glad that you are interested in traditional Chinese festivals.

As you know, Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most important lunar festivals in China,

which has a long history of over 2000 years. For celebrating it, we can relax ourselves by spending a three-day holiday happily.

We can take part in colorful activities, including watching dragon boat racing match, tasting festival food—zongzi. Besides, enjoying dragon and lion dances is another good choice. If you like, you can come with me to visit my relatives and friends.

Are you content with the holiday plan? I’m looking forward to your early reply.

Yours,

Li Hua

听力录音文稿

(Text 1)

W: What time is your train leaving?

M: It leaves at three, an hour and fifteen minutes from now.

(Text 2)

M: I forgot to bring my camera with me, so I can’t take any pictures!

W: Don’t worry. You can use my cell phone. It takes good pictures.

(Text 3)

W: Before we begin today’s lecture, I want to invite Dr. Kathleen White to talk about the plan for the afternoon.

M: Prof. Brookings, I just talked to Dr. White. She said she will be a little late today because she got stuck in traffic.

W: Oh, thank you, Dr. Mildens. In that case, I’ll begin the lecture now.

(Text 4)

M: So do you have any time for a social life?

W: Yeah. The thing I like most is the theatre. Are you interested in the theatre?

M: Yes. I see a musical once in a while. I prefer the cinema …actually, I really haven’t seen anything for ages. Usually I just come home and put my feet up and watch football on TV.

It’s terrible really.

(Text 5)

W: I won’t have anything to wear to the party tomorrow unless I go to buy a dress today.

M: Then why not drive downtown and go shopping this afternoon?

W: My car is in the shop for repairs, and I can’t find anyone to give me a lift.

M: Well, I’m going downtown this afternoon.

(Text 6)

W: Hi, Ted! I heard you just came back from a holiday.

M: Yes. I went to Asia for two weeks.

W: Did you go to China?

M: No. I went to Thailand and Singapore. I stayed in Thailand for five days and Singapore for the rest of the time.

W: You do travel a lot, don’t you? You went to Italy last year, right?

M: Well, I’ve been to quite a few countries, but not yet to Italy. Last summer, I toured Chile for two weeks. I really enjoyed my time there.

(Text 7)

W: Excuse me. Is this the baggage claim area for flight AM 231?

M: Yes, it is. How can I help you?

W: Well, this is my baggage claim tag, but I still can’t find my checked baggage. I am a little worried.

M: Don’t worry. I am sure it will come in a minute. How many pieces of luggage do you have?

Can you describe them?

W: I have two suitcases and one bag. One is a large dark blue leather suitcase. Another one is a medium gray leather suitcase. I also have a small light brown bag. All of them have my name tag on them.

(Text 8)

W: Here we are in the hallway. On the right is the dining room, and there on the left is the sitting room.

M: Oh, great —an old fireplace and large windows! I love large windows.

W: Yes. This room’s got a lot of light and, of course, a good view of the river. And if we open this door, we’ve got the kitchen. It’s quite small but very modern. Do you cook?

M: Yes. I like cooking. Very nice —I see a gas cooker here, a microwave, and lots of cupboards.

Is there a dishwasher?

W: No. I usually wash dishes by hand, but I can easily have one installed in the kitchen.

M: OK. Could I see the bedrooms, please?

W: Of course. This one here is 12 by 11 feet and the smaller bedroom, just across the hall, is eight by seven-and-a-half.

M: Seems very nice. Shall we go out to the back garden?

W: Sure. This way, please.

(Text 9)

W: Gerry, come and take a look at this information pack for our trip to London.

M: Oh my. There are so many choices, Penny. I don’t know where to start.

W: Well, why don’t we start with the kids? I don’t think Sally would like the London Zoo. She always feels sorry for the animals, but she’s been asking about the London Eye for weeks, so we have to go there.

M: You’re right. What about Billy? He loves boats, so it’s either the Thames or a boat at the zoo.

W: Definitely the Thames for Billy. What about an opera at Covent Gardens for your parents? M: That would be great. And for you …would you like to go shopping on Oxford Street?

W: Which page is that on? Wow! This looks fantastic. There are so many great shops in Oxford Street. Will you come with me?

M: I’ll come if you really want me to, dear. Do you have any ideas?

W: I will visit Alice. She was my best friend when we were at college. She found a job in London after graduation. She doesn’t know my plan. I want it to be a surprise.

(Text 10) M

Good morning everyone. Welcome to your first day here at school! I’m Professor Garson

and will be your advisor this term. Since this is your first day, I’ll explain a bit about how you should make up your study plan for this term.

First, everyone must take three required subjects: maths, English and history. The only one which is arranged for you is English. You’re to be tested and then will be placed according to your level in that subject. The only requirement for maths is that you’ve completed the previous level. History is open at all levels since study is usually divided into the different historical time periods. In history, you may choose from almost any culture and time, so unless you’re studying a specific culture or time period, you’re free to choose the history course that you’re most interested in.

Optional courses are subjects you can choose to take according to your own interests. These are courses that are not required and may be in fields such as science, art, sports, computer science, business —almost anything that you can think of.

If you need help, I can assist you with making a plan that will meet the required number of units and also include your required and optional courses. It can be tricky, since sometimes there may be no room in a course that you want or are required to take, but we can try to schedule the course for another term.

OK. That’s all for me. If you have any questions, you may come to my office during my office hours.
