EmmaEmma was the works from the famous writer Jane Austen. I have read a lot about her works and I like this book very much. Perhaps the majority would prefer her other works such as Pride and Prejudice.Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly 21 years in Highbury. She had a sister, Isabella who married Mr. Knightley‘s brother. Mr. Knightley, a sensible man about 37 or 38, was a very old and intimate friend of Mr. Woodhouse‘s family. Everyone believed that Emma was a perfect girl except Mr. Knightley. In fact, Mr. Knightley was one of the few people who could see faults in Emma, and the only one who ever told her of them though Emma herself did not agree with him. In this book my favorite person was just Mr. Knightley. It seems to me that he was handsome, mature and he was also a man of integrity. He could judge clearly what was right or wrong. He was able to guide people to the right way. If you come across a person like him, then you are a lucky guy.Emma’s mother had been supplied by an excellent woman as governess Miss Taylor, who had a deep friendship with Emma. Miss Taylor’s judgment, but directed chiefly by her own. At the beginning, Emma did not want to get married, but she was delighted to make the match to others. Then Miss Taylor married Mr. Weston due to the effort of Emma. Mr. Weston was a native of Highbury, and born of a respectable family and had received a good education. Mr. Weston had married Miss Churchill who died after she gave birth to Frank Churchill. Frank Churchill was raised up by his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Churchill. It was a good marriage for Miss Taylor because Mr. Weston was a man of unexceptionable character, easy fortune, suitable age and pleasant manners.However, it was the first time that Emma felt sorrow after loss Miss Taylor. I like Miss Taylor very much because she is a beautiful and considerable woman. Highburywas a large and populous village and it was a peace place. Emma’s father was a nervous man and he was also a man who did not want to make things change. He even did not want her daughter to marry someone because he was afraid of any dangerous thing. He thought that marriage was terrible because women could lose their life when they gave birth to the children. Actually, it was a terrible thing. There were a great many of women losing their life owing to lack of advanced technology. Emma was a fortunate girl in that her father loved her very much. It was impossible in china that women did not get married at that time. Few people would consider women’s profits. In ancient China, a lot of women were regarded as a tool of giving birth to children. I am very envious of Emma’s life after I read the book. She could choose her life according to her own willing. I suppose that it is an incredible thing to women at that time in China. Even in today’s China, only a few women could live in this way.Mr. Elton was a young man living alone and visited Mr. Woodlouse’s a lot. Mr. Woodhouse liked very much to have his friends come and see him. Mrs. And Miss Bates often came to his house. Mrs. Bates, the widow of a former vicar of Highbury, was a very old lady. She lived with her single daughter in a very small way. Her daughter enjoyed a most uncommon degree for a woman who was not young, handsome, and rich, and did not married either. Miss Bates loved everybody, was interested in everybody’s happiness. Miss Bates had a niece named Jane Fairfax who was a governess in London.Emma was very lonely after lost Miss Taylor so she made a new friend Harriet Smith. We can see that everyone needs friends. Friends play a significant role in our life. Harriet Smith was the natural daughter of somebody, and she was 17 at that time and was a pretty girl. Emma wanted to improve Harriet and introduce her into good society. At the beginning, Emma did not make contact with farmers but she believed that they must be coarse and unpolished. A young farmer, Robert Martin who was an excellent person made a proposal to Harriet. But Emma thought that he was a rude person and let Harriet refuse his proposal. Mr. Knightley was angry with Emma about her opinion to Mr. Martin. He told Emma that Robert was a kind and diligent guy and he believed that it was good match between Harriet and Mr. Martin. However, Emmadid not think so. She wished that Mr. Elton would marry Harriet, which later was proved a big mistake. Actually, Mr. Elton wanted to marry Emma herself because she owned a lot of money. Harriet was extremely sad after she knew it and Emma was regretful about what she did. But she did not give up and she encouraged Harriet and was longing for a better man for Harriet. Later on, Mr. Frank Churchill came back to the Highbury.Emma was curious about this young man and they got along well with each other. Jane Fairfax also came back to the Highbury and she was a kind girl and was given an excellent education. In fact, Jane Fairfax and Frank Churchill had engaged before they returned to the Highbury, but nobody knew it. Mr. Knightley felt the intimacy between Jane and Frank but Emma did not believe him. They concealed the truth to all the people because Frank Churchill was afraid that his aunt would not agree with his marriage. Everyone was surprised when they heard about the news including Emma. Emma thought Harriet liked Frank Churchill but Harriet said that she liked Mr. Knightley. Emma was very grievously about this news because she found that she loved Mr. Knightley all the time. The ending of this book is that Emma married Mr. Knightley, Harrie finally married Robert Martin and Frank Churchill married Jane Fairfax. It is a happy ending.I am very astonished when I know that Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax are engaged each other. I can not believe it believe because I suppose that Frank loves Emma. When I know the whole story, I admire Mr. Knightley even more. He is always the right person and can see the points which others can not. He is a wise and prescient person. As for Frank Churchill, I do not think he is a brave person. If you love someone, you should get over the difficulties with her rather than conceal the truth. Perhaps he is afraid of losing the property or something else, but I just can not agree with his behavior.This was a simple story and all the things happened in the same place with the same people. The author’s description was exquisite and vivid. I could see that beautiful town in my mind. I love Emma very much. She is pretty and kind though she also has some disadvantages. After she knew that she was misunderstanding aboutRobert Martin, she apologized for that and she changed her ideas about farmers. When Mr. Knightley said that she was very impolite to Miss Bates, she also recognized that and apologized for Miss Bates the next day. She could bravely acknowledge her mistake and changed her behavior after that. I suppose it is the reason that Mr. Knightley loves Emma and it is the same reason that the readers love Emma. I believe that few of people can acknowledge their mistakes even if they know that they are wrong. There is an old Chinese saying going like this:” A fault confessed is half redressed.” Therefore, I think that all of us should learn from Emma. Making mistake is not a bad thing. Nobody is perfect means everyone will make mistake. The major point is that if we can correct our fault.After I saw the movie about this story, the landscape of that place attracted my attention extremely. I was a travel lover, and I appreciated all the beautiful and peaceful places. The surroundings were totally different from our country. It occurred to the world tranquility after I saw it. I wish one day I can see the place on the scene.All in all, the book is worth reading and you will learn a lot from it if you read it carefully. When you read it, you may feel that you forget the outside world. There is no war, no cheating and no criminal act and the world is small but is filled with love. That is the world which I love.。
