【转】词汇记忆方法:助你轻松背诵10000个GRE高级词汇热1已有 1775 次阅读2010-02-09 16:37对于要参加GRE,GMAT,SAT,LSAT等考试的同学来说,背诵高级词汇是一件很让人心烦的事情。

这些考试动辄就要背上上万个词汇,给很多同学肩上增加了沉重的负担。

与四六级词汇可以死记硬背不同,高级词汇以其数量大,难度高的特点,对背诵者提出了更高的要求,而是否掌握正确的背诵方法就成为能否攻克高级词汇关的关键。

笔者在上海新东方开设高级词汇班四年,对高级词汇的背诵方法有一定的研究,这里就和同学们做一个初步的探讨。

从宏观上来看,笔者认为,高级词汇的背诵方法可以分为如下几大类:一.助记法1.词根词缀法对于每个要攻克高级词汇关的同学来说,词根词缀法是个最基本也是最有效的方法。

当你的词汇量达到5000以上后要想词汇量有个更大的突破,就必须学习相当的词根词缀。

最常见的需要我们掌握的词根大约有100多个,比如spic,spect这个词根,它表示看的意思,那么它就可以衍生出如下单词:aspect→a+spect(看) →看到的东西→n. 方面circumspect→cricum(圈)+spect(看) →绕着圈看→adj. 小心谨慎的conspectus→con(一起)+spect(看)+us→大家一起看的东西→n. 大纲conspicuous→con(一起)+spic(看)+uous→大家一起来看→adj. 显著的expectant→ex(向外)+pect(看)+ant→向外看出去→adj. 期待的introspection→intro(向内)+spect(看)+ion→向里面看→n. 内省perspective→per(全部)+spect+(看)ive→全部都能看的→adj. 透视的prospective→pro(向前)+spect(看)+ive→往前看的→adj. 期望的perspicacious→per(全部)+spic(看)+acious(多) →全部看的东西比较多→adj. 洞察力强的retrospect→retro(回来)+spect(看) →回头看→v. 回顾spectacle→spect(看)+acle→看到的场面→n. 壮观的场面spectator→spect(看)+ator(人) →看的人→n. 观众spectrum→spect(看)+rum→看的东西→n. 光谱可见,词根词缀法的好处就在于,掌握了一个词根就可以背出一串单词,而且记忆得非常巩固,事半功倍。

2.典故法英语中有很多词是来自于一个典故的,这个典故可以是一个人名,一个地名或是其他故事,掌握了这个典故就可以帮助你更好地背诵这个单词的精确含义。

比如高端词汇中有个词maverick, 这个词有两层含义,一层是未打烙印的小牛,一层是违背传统的人,看似这两层含义毫无关系,其实它们都是来自于一个典故。

在美国的德州有一个牧场主,此君行事喜欢特立独行,违背传统,别人喜欢往东他却偏要往西,别人往南他却偏要往北。

而当时的德州有个不成文的规矩,每个牧场主都要在自己的牛羊身上打一个烙印,比如说这头牛属于David就在上面打个David,而这头羊属于Jacky就在上面打个Jacky,这样如果牛羊走失了一看烙印就知道它属于谁了,但Maverick就偏偏不在自己牛羊身上打烙印,而且他对众宣布,我的牛羊是不打烙印的,这样别的牧场主就非打烙印不可了,因为如果你不打烙印,你的牛羊就归Maverick所有了,可见Maverick是个看似离经叛道而其实具有大智慧的人。

而这个词也就相应的有了这么两层含义。

下面我们再深入分析下这个词。

那么这个词从感情色彩来看,是个褒义词还是贬义词呢?很多同学乍听词义,可能会觉得是贬义词,其实它还是带有褒义色彩的。

因为在美国,只有违背传统了并且获得巨大成功的人,才可以叫做maverick。

比如我们新东方的创始人俞敏洪老师,他从北大辞去副教授的职位而出来办了新东方而直到把它做到上市公司,可以说他就是个maverick。

再如美国的Bill Gates,他当时是在哈佛大学读的本科,哈佛乃是全世界学生心中的圣地,但Gates却毅然从哈佛大学退学,出来办了微软公司,可以说,Gates也是个Maverick,如果他继续留在哈佛,即使他拿了哈佛的博士,也没有今天的微软了。

所以美国人根深蒂固地就认为,只有你的想法和做法与众不同,那么这样你才可以相应地获得超越于平凡人的成绩。

分析了这个单词的典故后,就可以更好的把握这个词的内涵和精髓了。

3.拆分法这个方法顾名思义就是说,把一个词按某种易于背诵的方法拆分开,从而把这个词给记住。

这个方法固然不象词根词缀法这么基本有效,但是只要使用得当还是很有用的。

下面就举几个例子:比如adamant这个词,意思为坚定的,我们可以把这个词拆解为三部分:a(一只)+dam(大坝)+ant(蚂蚁) →一只站在大坝上的蚂蚁,虽然说风浪很大,但它一依然屹立不到,自然就有坚定的感觉了。

再如charisma这个词,意思是具有领导魅力的,可以把它拆解为cha(=china中国)+ris(=rise升起)+ma(mao毛泽东),意思即为中国升起了毛泽东,毛主席自然就是个具有领袖魅力的人物,而这个词也就相应地记住了。

还有个经典的单词morose, 意思是郁闷的,心情不佳的,你就可以把这个词拆分为mo(谐音为没有)+rose(玫瑰花) →没有玫瑰花,试想下2.14情人节,你是个男生无人可送玫瑰花,你是个女生没人送你玫瑰花,只能一个人躲在寝室里面背单词,自然就是郁闷的了。

4.谐音法谐音法就是根据这个词的读音,与这个词的词义联系起来,从而相应地把这个词给记住。

比如有个词stubborn,意思是顽固的,你可以把这个词记为死,大,笨, 又死又大又苯的人自然就有顽固的感觉了。

再譬如morbid, 意思是病态的不正常的,你可以读为毛病的,就马上记住了。

还有个词pest就更好背了,读音为拍死它,马上就可以联想到它的词义害虫。

拆分法和联想法还可以结合起来使用,有时候会收到很好的效果。

比如有个词chaos,意思是混乱的,你就可以理解成为chao(吵)+s(死)=吵死→混乱的。

当然用这个方法大家也不要走火入魔,很多同学觉得谐音法很好玩,就每个词都用这个方法去套,这显然是很不合适的,很多词很难用谐音就不要强求,可以改用其他办法。

二:形近义近归纳法由于在高端词汇当中,有很多词的形状是差不多的,这个称之为形近,又有很多单词意思是差不多的,这个称之为义近。

在背诵时就可以把这些单词总结在一起背,以防混淆。

比如有这么两个词,discreet和discrete, 它们形状长得非常相似,但意义却有很大的差别。

前面这个词的意思是谨慎小心的,后面这个词意思是离散的,不连续的。

背这种形近词的时候一般可以两步走,第一步是找两个形近词的差异,第二步是通过差异来联想。

比方说这两个词的差异非常明显,就在于一个词的结尾是eet,而另一个词的结尾是ete,找出差异之后就可以通过差异来联想了。

由于后面这个词discrete的结尾是ete,两个e不连接在一起,所以这个词的意思是离散的,不连续的。

而前面这个词discreet的结尾是eet,两个e连在一起了,所以这个词的意思是谨慎小心的。

再比如还有两个词,一个是ingenious,意思是聪明的,还有一个词是ingenuous,意思是天真的。

这两个词的形状也很象,同样我们可以先找差异,差异在于前面这个词的中间是i, 后面这个词的中间是u,我们可以把i想象成I,I就是自己,而u可以想象成you,也就是你。

而联合两个词的词义,我们每个人都喜欢说自己是聪明的,而说别人是天真的,这样这两个词也就相应记忆住了。

义近则是指意思相近的词,可以放在一起背诵。

比如说下面这些词都是批评谴责的意思:批评(轻):v: admonish chide criticize reproach reproof(n) reprove flak批评(重):v: berate castigate censure chastise condemn denounce diatribe(n) excoriate fulminate impeach impugn invective(n) inveigh lambaste rail rebuke reprehend reprimand reprobate revile scold upbraid vituperate pan还有些词则都是称赞的意思:称赞:v: acclaim applaud commend eulogize exalt extol glorify laud rave tout n: accolade encomium approbation orchid plaudit tribute这样把同义的词总结在一起,就很易于背诵,否则要掌握这些词是有相当难度的。

三.联想归类记忆法在高端词汇中,我们会碰到各种各样分门别类的词汇,把这些词汇按照各种类别把它区分开来加以背诵,就可以收到非常好的效果。

大家在背诵词汇时,要多做有心人,善于把这种同类的词汇总结出来便于记忆。

四.文化背景记忆法在高端词汇中,有很多词来自于西方的三个文化背景,即古希腊神话,古罗马神话和圣经。

适当地掌握一下这三种文化,对大家背单词也是很有帮助的。

比如下面这些词都来自于古希腊神话:chaos (n) 混乱: 这个词来自于古希腊神话中最古老的神Chaos,由于这个神一出世的时候世界处于一片非常混乱的状态,所以这个词的意思引申为混乱。

titanic (adj.) 巨大的: 这个词来自于古希腊神话中12个Titan神,这12个神都长得非常之高大,于是这个词的意思就是巨大的。

其实这个词大家不应该陌生,有个著名的电影就是Titanic,那艘船不就是一艘巨大的船吗。

gorgon (n. 丑女): 它来自于希腊神话中三个女妖怪Gorgons, 这三个女妖外表非常丑陋,头发都是一条条的蛇,所以引申为丑女。

当中的一个女妖Medusa尤其有名,相传别人看了她的眼睛马上就会变成石头,后来被希腊神话著名英雄Perseus所杀。

irisdescent (adj. 彩虹色的): 来自于古希腊神话中的彩虹女神Iris, 她是主神Zeus的使者,彩虹的化身,所以引申为彩虹色的。

sphinx (n. 谜一样的人或事物): 这个词来自于古希腊神话中的著名女妖Sphinx,它出过一个著名的谜语:什么东西早上四条腿,中午两条腿,晚上三条腿,谜底就是我们人类。

因为人早上刚出生时用两只手两条腿爬,中午时成年了就站立起来走路也就是两条腿了,晚年时老年了拄根拐杖就三条腿了,所以这个词引申为谜一样的人或事物。
