How true the saying is: “There’s no place like home!”I love you, China. As a young student, all we should do is to study hard and devote ourselves whole-heartedly in the future, to the great cause of building you into an even stronger and greater country in the world. I love you, my dear motherland! I love you, China!Thank you for your listening !英语的即兴演讲材料篇2Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, I’m very glad to make a speech here. Today my topic is “I love you, China.”Since the day I was born, I began to have a proudnameChinese. Since the day I began to talk, the most beautiful sentence I’ve ever learnt has been “I love you, China!”I love you, China, and I’m so proud of being a Chinese. I’m proud that I’ve got the beautiful yellow skin, black eyes and black hair. I’m also proud that I speak the most beautiful language in the worldChinese.I love you, China, for I can feel the deep love you give me every day, every minute. Last year, I got an opportunity to visit the United States of America. During my staying there, my father’s boss once invited my family to dinner. While at table, he looked at me and asked: “Little boy, how long have you been in America?” “About a month,” I answered, “How lucky you are!”he said, “If you were living in China, how could you learn such perfect English?” I smiled and told him proudly that all the students in China are able to learn English at school. I saw his surprised eyes and said to myself, “I’m proud of you, China. For you are offering us the best education.”英语的即兴演讲材料篇3On New Year's Eve, our class had a party. The atmosphere was good. It was out of the ordinary from the very begining. The boy student from one bedroom gave an unusual performance. We saw a boy named Li Xinmin turn off all the lights in a sudden snap. Then with three resounding crow of a cock echoing in the hall, the hall was again brightly lit in a snap. Then, the representative of the bedroom Zhu Guozhang asked us to guess a line of a poem related to the above situation. He added that Li Xinmin alone was born in the year of the dog and the other three were all born in the year of the chicken. They left us all in confusion. And it was our monitor who was quickwitted. He shouted our, “The day b reaks as the cock crows three times at dawn.” The hall After that, they had another item. This time Li Xinmin was placed in the middle of the circle. While he was standing there, the other three stood around him, each bowing down to him at an angle of 120 degrees. It was an idiom. This time I got it right:“The dog stands out among a group of chickens.”Then we all sang and played games until it was eleven o'clock at night. The old man on night watch came to turn off the lights. We had to tear ourselves away from the party. From this activity, I discovered that many of our classmates are really talented singers.英语的即兴演讲材料篇4But father made this all different!he works very hard on his own business, now we have our own 2 housese, surly,i have my own room.and he take our family so much happiness, richer and richer. When i was little, i did everything with my dad. you could always find me sitting on his knee or walking and doing everything with him. every night he would read me a bed time story and make the voices of each character.I learnt a lot from my daddy. i learnt to never take things to seriously and to always smile.Like many other fathers, my dad and i also has generation gap. he is not good at or even can’t work the puter. so when i sitting at the puter desk,he will say something like ‘you should pay more attention to your study’,‘don’t waste time on the puter games’ , ‘it will be bad for your eyes’ and so on. how can i- a puter fan reduce time on puter? so i continue studying and playing on itYears pasted, my father is over 45 now. it is time for me to look after him and i am sure i will do and we will live an even better life. and i will say,i really love you dad, cause you are the hero in my mind.Thank you so much!英语的即兴演讲材料篇5One thing happened in Japan: some people in order to decorate the home, opened the wall; Japanese residential wall is usually the middle of the board after the board, both sides of the soil, in fact, it is emptyWhen he removed the wall and found a house lizard trapped in there, one ing from outside the nail nails nailed down the house lizard tail. I remember when I was a little girl, I often stood on my toes, trying to find my face in the mirror of the dressing table, which was nearly as high as I was. Now I still like to look into the mirror. Only now, the dressing table is too low for me. As I bend down, I see the face of a young woman, glowing with maturity, confident in her future and fascinated with her own reflection. The fact that I like to look into the mirror has to do with my granny with whom I spent most of my childhood. I remember clearly that one night I heard her murmuring, "Women can't be seen. Women can't be seen." I was so confused as to look into the mirror the next morning to check if I could indeed see myself. Only now as a young woman myself, can I understand that it was not physical visibility that granny had on her mind.Granny spent all her life taking care of the family, day in and day out. She cooked for her husband and 10 children. But whenever guests came, she and other female family members had to eat by the stove in the small kitchen. At family discussions, she was never asked for her opinion. After grandpa passed away, she had to listen to my uncle, her eldest son, fulfilled her duty asdaughter, wife, and mother; yet as a person, she remained little noticed. Even though she could see herself in the mirror of the dressing table, she was never visible in the mirror of society.I have been living a different life. At home, I make decisions together with the rest of the family. In school, I often take charge of various activities the same as other boys and girls. Not only that, I can see something granny could not have dreamed of─making decisions for my own future. My life has been a series of decisions. I could choose from several universities as I came out of high school. At university, I could choose from a range of subjects from English literature to business law. And now upon graduation, I am again faced with decisions─to further my study or to go to work; to stay in China or to go abroad; to get married right away or to remain single for a bit longer. It does not matter whether or not I will e famous or rich, but I will treasure the chance to demonstrate my potential and to help other women demonstrate theirs as full members of society, fully visible in the mirror of history. I will treasure it because the abundance of choice that I enjoy came only after decades of efforts made by my granny, my mum, and millions of other Chinese women. However, the choices to be made by me and others of my generation are a great challenge. The misconception that men are superior to women is still dominating many people's minds. While men are encouraged to pete and to assert themselves, we are expected to be quiet, loyal and obedient. This is not very different from what is expected of us as good wives and good mothers. The challenge we face calls for a higher level of our personal development and self-determination.The story of my grandmother and myself mirrors the lives of millions of other women in China and perhaps in the world. Many of them still lead the life of my grandmother. Their worth is not yet recognized. It is the responsibility of a young person like me to work hard and struggle hard so that they too will see themselves and will be seen in the mirror of society. This is my dream. This dream, I believe, is not only shared by our grandmothers, mothers and sisters, but also by many of our fathers, brothers, husbands and male colleagues. It will not e true until everyone fully realizes that women can contribute to society and should be guaranteed the right to do so. Women hold up half the sky.英语的即兴演讲材料篇16My definition of successToday I am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. What is success? It is what everyone is longing for.Sometimes success would be rather simple. Winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend is success; even now I am standing here giving my speech is somehow also success. However, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success es very plicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is high social status success? No, I don’t think so. I believe success is the realization of people’s hopes and ideals.Nowadays, in the modern society there are many peoplewho are regarded as the successful. And the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. But the problem is wether it is real success. We all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. If we keep chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Success we must need something inside, which is the realization of people’ hopes and ideals.Different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to e by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am very proud that I have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. It is my success, cause I raise up to challenge my hope. What is success? Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But I am sure every success leads to an ever-brighter future. So ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a successful life!Wish you all good success!英语的即兴演讲材料篇17Stepping into the new century environment pollution has e more serious than ever since.

I feel that this award was not made to me as a man, but tomy work -- life's work in the agony and sweat of the human spirit, not for glory and least of all for profit, but to create out of the materials of the human spirit something which did not exist before. So this award is only mine in trust. It will not be difficult to find a dedication 1 for the money part of it commensurate with the purpose and significance of its origin. But I would like to do the same with the acclaim 2 too, by using this moment as a pinnacle 3 from which I might be listened to by the young men and women already dedicated 4 to the same anguish 5 and travail 6 , among whom is already that one who will some day stand where I am standing 7 .Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so long sustained by now that we can even bear it. There are no longer problems of the spirit. There is only the question: When will I be blown up? Because of this, the young man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat. He must learn them again. He must teach himself that the basest of all things is to be afraid; and, teaching himself that, forget it forever, leaving no room in his workshop foranything but the old verities 8 and truths of the heart, the universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral and doomed 10 -- love and honor and pity and pride and compassion 11 and sacrifice. Until he does so, he labors 12 under a curse. He writes not of love but of lust 13 , of defeats in which nobody loses anything of value, of victories without hope and, worst of all, without pity or compassion. His griefs grieve on no universal bones, leaving no scars. He writes not of the heart but of the glands 14 .Until he learns these things, he will write as though he stood among and watched the end of man. I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal 15 simply because he will endure: that when the last ding-dong of doom 9 has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still be one more sound: that of his puny 16 inexhaustible voice, still talking. I refuse to accept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The poet’s, the writer's, duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, byreminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet's voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props 17 , the pillars to help him endure and prevail.■文章重点单词注释:1dedicationn.奉献,献身,致力,题献,献辞参考例句:We admire her courage, compassion and dedication.我们钦佩她的勇气、爱心和奉献精神。

英语即兴演讲稿篇1Students are free but polite and they respect each other. they can leave at 4:00 every afternoon, or perhaps earlier. they have the freedom to organize time. they can go to the library, go to the lab, the computer rooms or the playground. they’re self-motivated and have a strong thirst for knowledge. and there are no frequent exams and rankings. students won’t be forced to wear uniforms everyday, and there is no required hair style. everyday is so colorful that they are looking forward to the next day when going to bed at night, every teacher in this school can give a course as they like. there is no tedious rating, no scraps of quantitative management and no rigid standard. teachers can fully display their personality in class, and they feel very happy and content to teach. every morning, on thoughts of giving lessons, they are excited. after class, they are delighted , with smiles on their faces. some experts, scholars and masters are also visiting teachers in this school.yang zhenning can give physics classes for a day. yi zhongtian opens lectures on chinese culture for a week. speaking of music, we can ask wang lihong to give music lectures, just as he did in oxford university. if necessary, we can also invite david beckham to speak something about the world cup …The principal of the school focuses on education rather thanwaste time in endless meetings and social activities. teachers’ wages are not high but enough to live comfortably. there are no other things to do except to teach. there are no paper requirements, no titles and no ranks beca use they don’t need to be judged by those things. almost every teacher is a well-known scholar and master in a particular field. a language teacher may be a writer at the same time. a math teacher may try to overcome a world-class guess. a physics teacher can win invention awards and a music teacher may return from an international music competition again. In short, in this school, the principal is satisfied, the teachers are happy and the students are joyful. that’s my dream.英语即兴演讲稿篇2Good morning, ladie s and gentlemen. i’d like to share my teaching dream with you. but before that, i want to say something about the beginning of this dream. in march this year, three teachers from australia came to our school. during the meeting, we exchanged a lot about education. i found that though we have almost the same teaching philosophy, we have different routines. what impressed me most was that their schools end at 3:00 in the afternoon and have no night classes. i can’t tell which kind of routine is better, but th e sharp contrast made me think about a better education. the following is a dreamy school in my mind, in which there is no pressure but pleasure. In this school, the buildings are well designed, close to nature. in the morning, children can read while enjoying the beautiful sunrise. in the evening, they can exercise by the lake reflecting the amazing sunset. in the spring, they can go to the wild, lie on the lawn, and watch the kite flying in the blue sky. in the summer, they can go to the forest, live in a cabin, and listen to the rhythm of the rain. …Students are free but polite and they respect each other. they can leave at 4:00 every afternoon, or perhaps earlier. they have the freedom to organize time. they can go to the library, go to the lab, the com puter rooms or the playground. they’re self-motivated and have a strong thirst for knowledge. and there are no frequent exams and rankings. students won’t be forced to wear uniforms everyday, and there is no required hair style. everyday is so colorful that they are looking forward to the next day when going to bed at night,英语即兴演讲稿篇3Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls:I am Chinese. I am proud of being a Chinese with five thousand years of civilization behind. Ive learned about the four great inventions made by our forefathers. Ive learned about the Great Wall and the Yangtze River. Ive learned about Zhang Hengand Ive learned about Zheng He .Who says the Yellow River Civilization has vanished? I know that my ancestors have made miracles on this fertile land and were still making miracles.Who can ignore the fact that we have established ourselves as a great state in the world, that we have devised our own nuclear weapons, that we have successfully sent our satellites into space, and that our GNP ranks No. 7 in the world? We have experienced the plunders by other nations, and we have experienced the war. Yet, based on such ruins, there still stands our nation----China, unyielding and unconquerable!I once came across an American tourist. She said, “China h asa history of five thousand years, but the US only has a history of 200 years. Five thousand years ago, China took the lead in theworld, and now it is the US that is leading.”My heart was deeply touched by these words. It is true that were still a developing nation, but it doesnt mean that we can despise ourselves. We have such a long-standing history, we have such abundant resources, we have such intelligent and diligent people, and we have enough to be proud of. We have reasons to say proudly : we are sure to take the lead in the world in the future again, for our problems are big, but our ambition is even bigger, our challenges are great, but our will is even greater.I am Chinese. I have inherited black hair and black eyes. I have inherited the virtues of my ancestors. I have also taken over responsibility. I am sure, that wherever I go, whatever I do, I shall never forget that I am Chinese!英语即兴演讲稿篇4I like to look into the mirror. I remember clearly that one night I heard her murmuring, "W omen can’t be seen. Women can’t be seen." I was so confused as to look into the mirror the next morning to check if I could indeed see myself. Only now as a young woman myself, can I understand that it was not physical visibility that granny had on her mind.Granny spent all her life taking care of the family, day in and day out. She cooked for her husband and 10 children. Butwhenever guests came, she and other female family members had to eat by the stove in the small kitchen. At family discussions, she was never asked for her opinion. After grandpa passed away, she had to listen to my uncle, her eldest son, fulfilled her duty as daughter, wife, and mother; yet as a person, she remained little noticed. It does not matter whether or not I will become famous or rich, but I will treasure the chance to demonstrate my potential and to help other women demonstrate theirs as full members of society, fully visible in the mirror of history. I will treasure it because the abundance of choice that I enjoy came only after decades of efforts made by my granny, my mum, and millions of other Chinese women. However, the choices to be made by me and others of my generation are a great challenge. The misconception that men are superi or to women is still dominating many people’s minds. While men are encouraged to compete and to assert themselves, we are expected to be quiet, loyal and obedient. This is not verydifferent from what is expected of us as good wives and good mothers. It will not come true until everyone fully realizes that women can contribute to society and should be guaranteed the right to do so. Women hold up half the sky.英语即兴演讲稿篇5Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, I’m very glad to make a speech here. Today my topic is “I love you, China.”Since the day I was born, I began to have a proud name—Chinese. Since the day I began to talk, the most beautiful sentence I’ve ever learnt has been “I love you, China!”I love you, China, and I’m so proud of being a Chinese. I’m proud that I’ve got the beautiful yellow skin, black eyes and black hair. I’m also proud that I speak the most beautiful language in the world—Chinese.I love you, China, for I can feel the deep love you give me every day, every minute. Last year, I got an opportunity to visit the United States of America. During my staying there, my father’s boss once invited my family to dinner. While at table, he looked at me and asked: “Little boy, how long have you beenin America?” “About a month,” I answered, “How lucky you are!” he said, “If you were living in China, how could you learn such perfect English?” I smiled and told him proudly th at all the students in China are able to learn English at school. I saw his surprised eyes and said to myself, “I’m proud of you, China. For you are offering us the best education.”When I came back from the USA, my friends asked me: “How do you feel about your staying there?”“Wonderful” I said. “Then why do you come back?” Hearing this, I told them there were lots of beautiful countries in the world, but none of them can compare with our own country—China. How true the saying is: “There’s no place like home!”I love you, China. As a young student, all we should do is to study hard and devote ourselves whole-heartedly in the future, to the great cause of building you into an even stronger and greater country in the world. I love you, my dear motherland! I love you, China!Thank you for your listening !英语即兴演讲稿篇6I dont think so. printed books wont be abandoned in such a short time. I admit that new technology is developing fast. Many advanced electronic products are gradually take the place of traditional tools. Just like in university, teachers like to use multimedia in class for it is quite convenient and efficient. However, for our student, it is not realistic to study completely by electronic products. There are many things need to recorded on books. Books are something meaningful and practical. I should say, in our country, printed books wouldnt be abandoned within 20 years at least for two reasons.Firstly, books are classical container of knowledge. They accompany human to advance. A student without books could be someway ridiculous.Secondly, our country havent developed so strong to make every student study by computer or other forms of electronic tools. And even after 20 years, the possibility is also very small.I also think it is unnecessary because books are cheap but useful and still meaningful.英语即兴演讲稿篇7Good evening ,Ladies and Gentlemen:Thank you very much for choosing to come in such a cold night.Today my topic is about choice and process.A research shows that a man has to make 73 choices one day. With so many choices one day, people easily get so confused and afraid of making wrong choice that they hesitate and finally miss the true part of life. In my opinion, the following part is of much more importance than the choice. There is no absolute right or wrong choice but wonderful or boring life, which the process makes the difference.Life is a box of chocolate, you never know what you will get. Forrest Gump made no decision by and for himself but he accomplished great success with his strong will in the process. The process is not the road itself but the attitudes and feelings ,the caution, courage and persistance we have as we encounter new experience and unexpected obstacles. Take myself as an example, I changed my major when I became a postgraduate. After the choice, days have been harsh for me.I cannot understand the new lessons at all. For they are closely related to mathmatics which I learned nothing about before. However wuththe belief that this is the great chance for me to experience new ideas and challenge myself,I persisted. I asked for helpfromevery channel and reorgonized my life. Gradually I could understand some parts and even found maths interesting. Moreover, I learned to act instead of complaining. In retrospect, the choice left no trace in my mind but the happiness and bitterness of the past four months becomes an unforgetable experience in my life.英语即兴演讲稿篇8Hello,everyone!Today I am very happy,Because I can talk about with you.You see I am a lovely girl, yes!I like laughing,I like studying. That`s me-- zhuyingjie from Badongshiyan primary school.I am eight. I am young but I know “we are the masters of nature.” We have only one earth. But now,the environment becomes worse and worse. As you know, theres no enough clean water for people. So many of them lose their lives because of water. If we take good care of our earth today,it will be more beautiful tomorrow. My dear friend let us start from the trivial side,To be a good kid keeper.英语即兴演讲稿篇9My father is a businessman. He is 42 years old. He is short. He likes reading newspapers after meals. He watches TV in the evening. He goes to work by car. He has got a nice black car. He often plays golf with his friends on the weekend. He does not often eat dinner with us.My mother is a housew ife. She doesn’t work. She stays at home. She is beautiful. She has long hair. She does housework in the morning. She often goes shopping in the afternoon. She is kind, but she is strict to my study. She likes reading. She watches TV at night, too.I love my parents. And they love me too. I have many friends in my class. Theyre lovely and interesting. I would like to introduce some of them. Alice is very cute. Shes also kind to everyone and shes very enthusiastic. Shes always ready to help everyone, but she is forgetful. She always forgets to bring her textbooks, but our teachers always forgive her. Ben is the most talkative boy in our class. His nickname is “chatterbox.” He has a great sense of humor and he always makes me laugh. Linda is a quiet student. She is good at every subject but she never shows off. Allen is a very tall boy. He plays basketball very well and he is on our school team. He often says, “playing basketball is good for your health. How about your classmates? Do you like them? Try to admire your classmates. You will be happier.英语即兴演讲稿篇10It is easy to describe success in terms of money, fame and reputation. But I believe that success is not external. I believe that success comes from within. My definition of success is to be true to yourself, and be true to others. That means, that you must cherish your personal ideal even in the face of adversity. I also believe that success is not discriminatory. Success is not restricted to such a class of people, in fact, it may be achieved by any person irrespective of his race, creed, gender and economic background. A good example of success is that of Beethoven. He is one of the world's most famous composers, yet he was deaf. He could not hear the majestic pieces of music that he created. Yet, in the face of this adversity, he was able to maintain his ideals--that of composing music. To exemplify what success means to me, I pose a question to all of you. What brings us together here today? I believe that it is the beauty of the spoken word. The effect of pause and the soundof rhetoric are unique to the spoken word. I believe the beauty of the spoken word is even stronger for those who have difficulty in expressing themselves. These people are reclusive and had their emotions hidden within them. I once went to Australia and I saw two pictures, Once was drawn by a normal child, the other was drawn by a child with social inhibitions. The picture drawn by the normal child was simple and plain. The other was life-like, full of details and imagination. What this shows is that these are ideas, emotions and feelings that are locked internally in thesechildren. My ideal is to be the key, spreading the beauty of the spoken words to these children. These children have been neglected, but I feel that I can and should help these children to find themselves and be able to express themselves.I realize that this is a difficult task, and there are many obstacles on the way. But I believe in my ideals and I will stick to them--even in the face of adversity. We should never have a premature abortion of ideals--let the child, let our ideals, stand the challenge. For a life without ideals is not living.Thank you!英语即兴演讲稿篇11Today, the teacher wants to talk about the topic of campus beautification. now i think there may be some students think, beautify the campus? our beautiful campus is not it? you look at the campus playground clean: no pa-pe-r scraps, four words surrounding trees turf building brilliant, neat rows of students in bright color, beautiful, there are beautiful scenery to embrace, who dare say our campus beauty ah? but today, the teacher to tell the truth: we are the campus of lethan u.s., there are "ugly".Next january, we will graduate from the school, we will enterinto the society, the environment changes will bring us anything, now i can make nothing of it. but i know the upcoming is a new life, a new starting point. In the middle of an ordinary life, always heard about a green hand students setbacks is a terrible word, we do not need to care too much, a lot of frustration is often a good start. some people grow up in the setback, someone in the frustration in the fall, the key depends on an individual is how to treat. to know the world is always relative, setbacks will be successful, it is what you want to do in the state of mind to face, stand up to better themselves, just to love, be contrite and reform oneself sigh unceasingly, can only continue to cry. which station on the table, not a bunch of sad past? frustration often makes them station more stable.I remember that the united states novelist, maugham wrotea novel, called the" blade", is that people moving from one state to another state when, as a transition from the knife to the other side, but the most difficult time is through the edge of the moment, i walked past will find, the other side of the knife not far from the way we thought impossible. Now, fast graduation face is going to test establishment, at school i often hear someone say" we than undergraduate, also do not go to test!", often hear such words, i would sniff at. in my opinion, the undergraduate is fierce, but we also is not a coward, why not start to abandon? usually say " opportunity is for those who are prepared", here i want to add a sentence "the opportunity is given to those who dares and challenges people," if we have the courage to challenge, again with our 5 years of accumulation, we have nothing more than undergraduate. moreover, our professional ability is stronger than they, after all we are spent 5years learning, plus we have two internshipopportunities, have a look, not over it, we the prerequisites have been far better with them, what need is there to be contrite and reform oneself? No matter how difficult, as long as we try to find the bright side, so, no matter how bad trouble will be better. otherwise, will only make you stuck in misery. The society is like an ocean is vast, as broad as the sky, we are so vast, so lofty social environment, how can not find their base point?Students, let us together under the flag wishes, wish our life everywhere man wenming flower! wish our own step by step towards civilization!Do civilized people, always call the pursuit of life!英语即兴演讲稿篇12Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. i’d like to share my teaching dream with you. but before that, i want to say something about the beginning of this dream. in march this year, three teachers from australia came to our school. during the meeting, we exchanged a lot about education. i found that though we have almost the same teaching philosophy, we have different routines. what impressed me most was that their schools end at 3:00 in the afternoon and have no night classes. i can’t tell which kind of routine is better, but the sharp contrast made me think about a better education. the following is a dreamy school in my mind, in which there is no pressure but pleasure. In this school, the buildings are well designed, close to nature. in the morning, children can read while enjoying the beautiful sunrise. in the evening, they can exercise by the lake reflecting the amazing sunset. in the spring, they can go to the wild, lie onthe lawn, and watch the kite flying in the blue sky. in the summer, they can go to the forest, live in a cabin, and listen to the rhythm of the rain. …Students are free but polite and they respect each other. they can leave at 4:00 every afternoon, or perhaps earlier. they have the freedom to organize time. they can go to the library, go to the lab, the computer rooms or the playground. they’re self-motivated and have a strong thirst for knowledge. and there are no frequent exams and rankings. students won’t be forced to wear uniforms everyday, and there is no required hair style. everyday is so colorful that they are looking forward to the next day when going to bed at night,英语即兴演讲稿篇13Distinguished judges, teachers, students:good afternoon everyone!from all the warm applause, i am of my classmates have hope.i will be with perseverance and tenacity to laugh last! What is life? is patience, tenacity, perseverance is perseverance, perseverance is a kind of toward the goal diligently pursue the process, a destination never give up the spirit!Life is not easy, there are test; life is not smooth, often need to exercise. cannot persist in their pursuit for ideal, can't keep on carving to efforts, will be without a single success. The development of training, in the face of10 meters of rock climbing and bungy jumping, all the students without fear, the courage to climb, especially some female students to overcome the physiological and psychological aspects of persistent limit, climb, bent upward; we are going forward, courageously try to be the first performance, and take concrete actions to interpret the essence and connotation of perseverance! One persistent tenacity is strong from the need of necessary conditions. in the face of adversity is from, in the face of difficulties do not bow their heads, is a heroic performance. ancient cloud: adversity makes a man wise, what makes a hero. the setback and the attack for the strong is the driving force and pressure, is succeand victory! as everyone knows, he was arrested and his book; zhong ni and qu yuan banished for spring and autumn; ode to a left thalamic blindness, mandarin; sima qian; the" historical records" prison; beethoven wrote" moonlight sonata". be too numerous to enumerate examples, but the truth is only one, it is perseverance! In his daily sailing kolumb diary is always written with such a sentence:" we keep going!" this sentence may seem trivial, but contains a profound truth. with this advance courageously spirit, they marched towards the vast sea, acrothe tempestuous waves, after savage wilderness, overcome go through untold hardships, finally found a new continent, completed the history of an amazing feat!Have one words of song, everyone for having heard it many times," no experience of wind and rain, how to see rainbow!" the road of life is not smooth, but carries a beautiful dream, just stick to the direction of life, they will be able to create their own or even human miracle! Finally, i would like to use a poem:Ugly bat with thousands of years of hard work was to win the praise of the poet a buffalo with a million works won the painter's green eyes, we are not born for fame and live to die,we are for the faith and to fight song!thank you.英语即兴演讲稿篇14Ladies and gentlemen:Good afternoon !T oday the topic of my speech is “Discover myself”.I think each people is unique.Everyone is different .I don’t need to envy others, because I think I am the only one in the world.S o do u really know yourself? In my parents’eyes,I am a naughty boy. And the term “in the air” should also be modified simply because there is no air anyway. It is interesting to walk the distance in a whole new style. And it is interesting to see the mother planet from a whole new angle. This big blue crystal sphere, from the pictures taken by those astronauts, the sight is marvelous. And I am dying to see this big blue ball in this style. What qualities make a good high school teacher? People might go for abilities like helping with future planning or encouraging academic autonomy. I, however, believe that the most important factor is the ability to recognize students in need and the willingness to lend a hand. The first beneficiary is underachievers. More often than not, students who fall behind suffer from a low self-esteem. It is especially true for teenagers who find it a disgrace to loseface in front of their peers. In this case, they would stayunder the radar and try to bury their problems in the dark. Nobody would even notice, not to mention offering any help. However, a teacher with a perceptive mind can discover the problem before it gets worse, so that the troubled kid could get proper help. Let’s say a boy whose parents are going through a nasty divorce may show up late at school or miss the deadlinefor science projects. If the teacher can spot his recent anomaly and reaches out to him, the boy might open up and confide to the teacher. This is the first step on the road to recovery and an attentive teacher makes all the difference. To sum up, to benefit high school students to a greater extent, the teachers have to be able to recognize what’s going wrong and what can be done to make it right. Other characterscan be good to have, but also fine to live without.Still one thing, a factory can be very dangerous. Because a fire or a explosion may break out in the factory. If it’s very near our home, it’s quite dangerous.2. Make sure that the factory can deal with the waste properly. Do not release the poisonous gasinto the air, and not release the waste water into the river nearby.3. Make sure the security guard in the factory works very well.1、说出你认为对你最有用的一本书,并解释原因。

你知道作文怎样写才规范吗?下面是本店铺整理的wealth and health英语作文,欢迎大家借鉴与参考,希望对大家有所帮助!wealth and health英语作文 1Which is more important, wealth or health? Different people have different opinions. Some people prefer wealth, holding that money can not bring everything, but without it, one can do nothing. In order to accumulate more money they can do anything. However, other people regard health as more important.Once health is lost,it is no use having a lot of money. As far as I am concerned, I love wealth, but I value health more.Everybody wants to live a happy life.So they try their best to earn money which can ensure they lead a comfortable life, but if happiness and comfort are achieved at the cost of their health, how can they be happy? Without health money becomes meaningless. In my opinion, no one agrees that a wealthy person withoutgood health can be happy. So, just do our best to keep healthy.wealth and health英语作文 2So far as the topic Health and Wealth is concerned, different people have different opinions about it.Some think that wealth means everything. To them, wealth or having a lot of money can help them to do what they want to do.With a lot of money, they can buy the beautiful house, eXpensive car, beautiful clothes, and so on.They even have the idea that they can buy happiness which they like.On the other hand, some other people dont agree with those people mentioned above. They believe that Healthy is more important than wealth.First, you can enjoy a happier life with healthy body than those wealthy people with poor health.Second,a healthy body is the foundation for a successful career.Third,a healthy body is also necessary for accumulating wealth. In a word, keeping health first if you want become wealthy. It is well-known that a person can make a large fortune if he has the right opportunities during his life. But if the person suffers from a terrible illness, then no matter how much money he may earn,he will still lead a miserable life. Therefore, health is much more important than wealth.wealth and health英语作文 3"Health is wealth!" This is an old saying which the majority applaud. As a rule, the wealthier you are, the weaker is your health, but this cannot be applied to all.To begin with, a person that has health can afford to challenge all hardships. For eXample, manual workers are usually stout and energetic. With their energy, they earn their living.Although such an occupation brings little reward as compared with the energy they have eXerted, they enjoy life whatever things may be.Moreover, business is based on health.Students in good health can absorb knowledge more readily. In good health, scientists can tackle compleX technical problems and achieve more success.Frequently we find millionaires cling close to their doctors for they seldom have enough eXercises to bring forth better health.Their lack of eXercises slackens the readiness of growth of the antibodies to resist the attack of diseases. So, my argue is that health is more important than wealth for if we do not have health, what can we benefit from wealth?wealth and health英语作文 4As we know, wealth and health is a hot topic. Some people think of health is the most essential thing.Butsome people consider that wealth is everything, if you have not enough money, you can not do anything.Besides, other holds that wealth and health is equally. In my opinion, I believe that health is more important than wealth.Firstly, keeping healthy first if you want to become healthy, even though you can buy beautiful clothes with a lot of money, you can not buy family , friendship and a piece of wholehearted.Sometimes money can buy happiness, but only if ones amounts get bigger and other people are not getting more.Secondly, if you haven not health, you can do nothing. As we know, needs are limited, but not greed. If you have not health, I believe that you wont have any desire and greed,in addition to want to become health up.Finally, I think health is life, also is kind of treasure, the first wealth is health. And there is not wealth is above the health.Sometimes, people will fall if they have a lot of money. In conclusion, I think health is the most important. We should do our ability to protect their own health, only in this way can we achievements we life values.wealth and health英语作文 5Some people hold that wealth is more important than health. They think that a wealthy person will be respected inthis world, while a poor person will be looked down upon by others. Therefore, a person who tries all means to make money will be considered (to be)a hero no matter whether he is in good or poor health. However, the majority of people believe that health is more important than wealth. For eXample, a healthy scientist can achieve more success in his scientific research .Only if a person enjoys good health ,can he really enjoy his life.In my opinion, health is more important than wealth .Good health can bring us success as well as real happiness. So,health is the most important thing that one has to treasure in this world.wealth and health英语作文 6Have a healthy body it is very important for us.How to have a healthy body?It is necessary to keep a balanced diet if you want to have a healthy body.Youd better eat enough vegatables which contain rich vitamin, proper meat is needed, too.Avoid fried or toasted food.It is important to do regular eXercises, such as running or playing badminton.Keeping high mood is good for mentally health. We should renew our spirits and release our stress, so that we can have a good attitude towards life.To enjoy our beautiful life, we must be bound to keep healthy.拥有一个健康的身体对我们来说很重要。

Even he couldn’t get it closed.Manager:You mean you slept with an open window all night? Why didn’t you call the security staff?Student:Well,I came home kind of late, and frankly,it was like way after hours.I thought about calling security. Then I just let it go.But one night of that cold is enough.Manager:Well, you should always call security.Even if they can’t fix the problem themselves, they’ll make sure the problem gets solved.Student:Okay.I’ll remember that. But actually,it’s not just the window.I think there’s something wrong with the heating thing in my room. The radiator,it must have cracked or something, because I just noticed a puddle of water in my room, and the heat barely seems to be working now.Manager:So you are telling me you have no heat and a window that doesn’t close?Student:Pretty much.Manager:Well, this won’t be a quick fix,I’m afraid. Those radiators, they are old and they are not easy to fix.And even if we repair the window today, you can’t live in a room without any heat.Student:You mean I’m gonna have to move?Manager:At least temporarily, until we can get that radiator fixed or replaced. That’s not a one-day job.You sure it’s not just condensation?Student:I don’t think so.You can kind of see where it’s seeping out and the water looks sort of rusty.Manager:Rusty?Yeah, rusty isn’t good.Tell you what,I’ll go look at it right away.Student:Great.Thanks.Manager:Why don’t you come back after lunch?By then I should know how long the repairs will take.Student:Can you give me some idea now?I’m gonna call a friend. She’s got an apartment off campus. She’ll let me stay there, but I’m sure she would like some idea of how long she’ll have to put up with me.Manager:Well, tomorrow is Friday, and if the radiator needs to be replaced, which probably does,we won’t have parts before Monday. So I’ll tell her at least four days.Student:Four days.Okay.Thanks.题目1.Why does the student go to see the man?A.To check on the status of some repairs she requestedB.To complain about the quality of some repair workC.To find out why her room has been scheduled for repair workD.To report that some additional repair work will be needed2.According to the student, why do some people have their windows open in her building?A.Their windows are broken and they cannot close them.B.They are responding to an order from the fire inspector.C.They are trying to clear the smell of fresh paint from their rooms.D.They are trying to create a comfortable temperature in their rooms.3.Why does the student mention her friend Bob?A.To emphasize that she is not the only student who is experiencing problemsB.To emphasize that the problem she is describing cannot be easily fixedC.To explain why she will not need the building manager's helpD.To explain how she learned there was a problem in her room4.What does the student imply when she talks about moving to an off-campus apartment?A.She will not be able to move for a few days.B.She cannot stay in the apartment indefinitely.C.She has not been happy with the security staff in her dormitory.D.She is not confident that the problems can be fixed in her dormitory room.5.What does the man imply when he says this:You sure it’s not just condensation?Student:I don’t think so.You can kind of see where it’s seeping out and the water looks sort of rusty.Manager:Rusty?Yeah, rusty isn’t good.A.He is not sure what is causing the problem.B.It is the student's fault that she has a problem.C.The student is probably right about the source of the problem.D.He does not understand the students description of her problem.答案D D B B C译文请听一段学生和建筑管理员之间的对话。

A balance between nature and nurtureIs it nature or is it nurture, heredity or society? In that great debate of our time, conservatives lean toward the former and liberals toward the latter.I believe both are asking the wrong question. I believe it’s nat ure and nurture, and this is why.I didn’t go to school until I was 12 or so. My parents thought that traveling in a house trailer was as enlightening as sitting in a classroom, so I escaped being taught some of the typical lessons of my generation: for instance, that this country was ―discovered‖ when the first white man set foot on it, that boys and girls were practically different species, that Europe deserved more textbook space than Africa and Asia combined.Instead, I grew up seeing with my own eyes, following my curiosity, falling in love with books, and growing up mostly around grown-ups — which, except for the books, was the way kids were raised for most of human history. Needless to say, school hit me like a ton of bricks. I wasn’t prepared for gen der obsessions, race and class complexities, or the new-to-me idea that war and male leadership were part of human nature. Soon, I gave in and became an adolescent hoping for approval and trying to conform. It was a stage that lasted through college.I owe the beginnings of re-birth to living in India for a couple of years where I fell in with a group of Gandhians, and then I came to the Kennedys, the civil rights movement and protests against the war in Vietnam. But most women, me included, stayed in our t raditional places until we began to gather, listen to each other’s stories and learn from shared experience. Soon, a national and international feminist movement was challenging the idea that what happened to men was political, but what happened to women was cultural — that the first could be changed but the second could not.I had the feeling of coming home, of awakening from an inauthentic life. It wasn’t as if I thought my self-authority was more important than external authority, but it wasn’t less impo rtant either. We are both communal and uniquely ourselves, not either-or.Since then, I’ve spent decades listening to kids before and after social roles hit. Faced with some inequality, the younger ones say, ―It’s not fair!‖ It’s as if there were some prim ordial expectation of empathy and cooperation that helps the species survive. But by the time kids are teenagers, social pressures have either nourished or starved this expectation. I suspect that their natural cry for fairness — or any whisper of it that survives — is the root from which social justice movements grow.So I no longer believe the conservative message that children are naturally selfish and destructive creatures who need civilizing by hierarchies or painful controls. On the contrary, I believe that hierarchy and painful controls create destructive people. And I no longer believe the liberal message that children are blank slates on which society can write anything. On the contrary, I believe that a unique core self is born into every human being — the result of millennia of environment and heredity combined in an unpredictable way that could never happen before or again. The truth is, we’ve been seduced into asking the wrong question by those who hope that the social order they want is inborn, or those who hope they can write the one they want on our uniquely long human childhoods. But the real answer is a balance between nature and nurture. What would happen if we listened to children as much as we talked to them? Or what would happen if even one generation were raised with respect and without violence?I believe we have no idea what might be possible on this ―Space Ship Earth.‖Gloria Steinem is a journalist and social activist in the feminist, peace and civil rights movements. I am still ―free-lancing‖ in religi on, searching for beliefs to guide me when I am an adult. I fear I shall always be searching, never attaining ultimate satisfaction, for I possess that blessing and curse – a doubting, questioning mind.At present, my doubting spirit has found comfort in certain ideas, gleaned from books and experience, to from a personal philosophy. I find that this philosophy, a code consisting of a few phrases, supplements, but does not replace, religion. The one rule that could serve anyone in almost any situation is, ―To see what must be done and not to do it, is a crime.‖ Urged on by this, I volunteer for distasteful tasks or pick up scrap paper from the floor. I am no longer able to ignore duty without feeling guilty. This is ―The still, small voice,‖ to be sure, but sharpened by my own discernment of duty.―The difficult we do at once, the impossible takes a little longer.‖ This is the motto of a potential scientist, already struggling to unravel the mysteries of life. It rings with the optimism youth needs in order to stand up against trouble or failure.Jonathan Edwards, a Puritan minister, resolved never to do anything out of revenge. I am a modern, a member of a church far removed from Puritanism, yet I have accepted this resolution. Since revenge and retaliation seem to have been accepted by nations today, I sometimes have difficulty reconciling my moral convictions with the tangled world being handed down to us by the adults. Apparently what I must do to make life more endurable, is to follow my principles, with the hope that enough of this feeling will rub off on my associates to being a chain reaction. To a thinking person, such resolutions are very valuable; nevertheless, they often leave a vacuum in the soul. Churches are trying to fill this vacuum, each by its own method. During this year, I have visited churches ranging from orthodoxy to extreme liberalism. In my search for a personal faith, I consider it my duty to expose myself to all forms of religion. Each church has left something within me – either a new concept of God and man, or an understanding and respect for those of other beliefs. I have found such experiences with other religions the best means for freeing myself from prejudices.Through my visits, the reasoning of fundamentalists has become clearer to me, but I am still unable to accept it. I have a simple faith in the Deity and a hope that my attempts to live a decent life are pleasing to Him. If I were to discover that there is no afterlife, my motive for moral living would not be destroyed. I have enough of the philosopher in me to love righteousness for its own sake. This is my youthful philosophy, a simple, liberal, and optimistic feeling, though I fear I shall lose some of it as I become more adult. Already, the though that the traditional thinkers might be right, after all, and I wrong, has made me waver. Still, these are my beliefs at sixteen. If I am mistake, I am too young to realize my error. Sometimes, in a moment of mental despair, I think of the words,―God loves an honest doubter,‖ and am comforted. When Elizabeth Deutsch Earle was 16, she won a This I Believe essay contest in the Cleveland Press newspaper. Today, Earle is a professor of plant breeding at Cornell University.A duty to healGrowing up in the grinding poverty of colonial Africa, America was my shining hope. Martin Luther King’s non-violent political struggle made freedom and equality sound like achievable goals. America’s ideals filled my head. Someday, I promised myself, I would walk on America’s streets. But, as soon as I set foot in America’s hospitals, though, reality — and racism — quickly intruded on the ideals. My color and accent set me apart. But in a hospital I am neither black nor white. I’m a doctor. I believe every patient that I touch deserves the same care and concern from me.In 1999, I was on call when a 19-year-old patient was brought into the hospital. He was coughing up blood after a car accident. He was a white supremacist, an American Nazi with a swastika tattooed on his chest. The nurses told me he wouldn’t let me touch him. When I came close to him, he spat on me. In that moment, I wanted no part of him either, but no other physician would take him on. I realized I had to minister to him as best as I could.I talked to him, but he refused to look at me or acknowledge me. He would only speak through the white nurses. Only they could check his body for injury. Only they could touch his tattooed chest. As it turned out, he was not badly hurt. We parted strangers.I still wonder: Was there more I could have done to make our encounter different or better? Could I have approached him differently? Could I have tried harder to win his trust?I can only guess his thoughts about me, or the beliefs he lived by. His racism, I think, had little to do with me, personally. And, I want to think it had little to do with America, with the faith of Martin Luther King and the other great men whose words I heard back in Africa, and who made me believe in this nation’s ideals of equality and freedom. My hands — my black hands — have saved many lives. I believe in my duty to heal. I believe all patients, all human beings, are equal, and that I must try to care for everyone, even those who would rather die than consider me their equal. Before coming to the United States in 1971, Pius Kamau studied medicine in his native Kenya as well as Spain and England. Photo by Nubar Alexanian.A game of cardsEver since I was old enough to read books on philosophy, I have been intrigued by the discussions on the nature of man. The philosophers have been debating for years about whether man is primarily good or primarily evil, whether he is primarily altruistic or selfish, cooperative or combative, gregarious or self-centered, whether he enjoys free will or whether everything is predetermined. As far back as the Socratic dialogues in Plato, and even before that, man has been baffled about himself. He knows he is capable of great and noble deeds, but then he is oppressed by the evidence of great wrongdoing. And so he wonders. I don’t presume to be able to resolve the contradictions. In fact, I don’t think we have to. It seems to me that the debate over good and evil in man, over free will and determinism, and over all the other contradictions—it seems to me that this debate is a futile one. For man is a creature of dualism. He is both good and evil, both altruistic and selfish. He enjoys free will to the extent that he can make decisions in lif e, but he can’t change his chemistry or his relatives or his physical endowments—all of which were determined for him at birth. And rather than speculate over which side of him is dominant, he might do well to consider what the contradictions and circumstances are that tend to bring out the good or evil, that enable him to be a nobler and responsible member of the human race. And so far as free will and determinism are concerned, something I heard in India on a recent visit might be worth passing along. Free will and determinism, I was told, are like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you represents determinism. The way you play your hand represent free will. Now where does all this leave us? It seems to me that we ought to attempt to bring about and safeguard those conditions that tend to develop the best in man. We know, for example, that the existence of fear and man’s inability to cope with fear bring about the worst in him. We know that what is true of man on a small scale can be true of society on a large scale. And today the conditions of fear in the world are, I’m afraid, affecting men everywhere. More than twenty-three hundred years ago, the Greek world, which had attained tremendous heights of creative intelligence and achievement, disintegrated under the pressure of fear. Today, too, if we read the signs correctly, there is fear everywhere. There is fear that the human race has exhausted its margin for error and that we are sliding into another great conflict that will cancel out thousands of y ears of human progress. And people are fearful because they don’t want to lose the things that are more important than peace itself—moral, democratic, and spiritual values. The problem confronting us today is far more serious than the destiny of any political system or even of any nation. The problem is the destiny of man: first, whether we can make this planet safe for man; second, whether we can make it fit for man. This I believe—that man today has all the resources to shatter his fears and go on to the greatest golden age in history, an age which will provide the conditions for human growth and for the development of the good that resides within man, whether in his individual or his collective being. And he has only to mobilize his rational intelligence and his conscience to put these resources to work.Norman Cousins was editor of The Saturday Review for 35 years. In addition to his literary career, he was an ardent critic of the nuclear arms race and the Vietnam War.A goal of service to humankindI believe I have a personal responsibility to make a positive impact on society. I’ve tried to accomplish this goal by choosing a life of public service. I am a physician and a scientist confronting the challenge of infectious diseases. I consider my job a gift. It allows me to try and help alleviate the suffering of humankind.I have three guiding principles that anchor my life, and I think about them every day.First, I have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Knowledge goes hand-in-hand with truth —something I learned with a bit of tough love from my Jesuit education first at Regis High School in New York City and then at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass. I consider myself a perpetual student. You seek and learn every day: from an experiment in the lab, from reading a scientific journal, from taking care of a patient. Because of this, I rarely get bored.Second, I believe in striving for excellence. I sweat the big and the small stuff! I do not apologize for this. One of the by-products of being a perfectionist and constantly trying to improve myself are sobering feelings of low-grade anxiety and a nagging sense of inadequacy. But this is not anxiety without a purpose. No, this anxiety keeps me humble. It creates a healthy tension that serves as the catalyst that drives me to fulfill my limited potential. This has made me a better physician and scientist. Without this tension, I woul dn’t be as focused.I have accepted that I will never know or understand as much as I want. This is what keeps the quest for knowledge exciting! And it is one of the reasons I would do my job even if I did not get paid to come to work every day.Third, I believe that as a physician my goal is to serve humankind.I have spent all of my professional life in public service. Most of it involved in research, care of patients, and public health policy concerning the HIV-AIDS epidemic. When I chose to concentrate on AIDS in the 1980s, many of my colleagues thought I was misguided to be focusing all of my attention on what was then considered ―just a gay man’s disease.‖ But I felt that this was my destiny and was perfectly matched to my training. I knew deep down that this was going to become a public health catastrophe. I am committed to confronting the enormity of this global public health catastrophe and its potential for even greater devastation.Failure to contain it cannot be an option. I believe that to be even marginally successful in working to contain this terrible disease, I must be guided by these principles. I must continually thirst for knowledge, accept nothing short of excellence and know that the good of the global society is more important and larger than I am.Dr. Anthony Fauci is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. I was raised to be a good Baptist and to be a patriotic American. I was raised to believe Catholics were idol-worshippers, liberals were communists and that black and white never mixed. God filled the background, ready to condemn me into Hell. God saw everything bad about me, knew every wayward thought. I was born with original sin — I had no chance. At the same time, being a white American provided me a sense of privilege, of being one of the ―better‖ people. As I grew older, I began to struggle with my sexuality. Every day I battled against demons driving me to impurity. I resisted and then I would succumb to unholy thought. I came to believe that I was an abomination, a thing hated by God. In search of a wife, I tried a dating service. Defeated, I waited for someone to take pity and love me. The idea of faking who I was to satisfy others turned my stomach. I came to believe that if I punished myself enough that God would show mercy and cure me of my wrongness.I drove myself deep into depression. I remember my Bible group talking about how they kicked someone out for refusing to stop being gay. My blood chilled and my heart hiccupped. I remember my family asking me what was wrong with me. Why wasn’t I dating? My sense of being less than fully human festered. I stopped going to church. I gave up on ever being loved. By age 35, I had no more than a few hugs as the lifetime sum of my physical intimacy. My skin cried in deprivation. I had no hope except that one day things might improve if I endured. And then they did.I started to change the basic stories of my life: that I’m bad, alienated from God, a freak of nature. I started to love myself and to believe the Divine did so as well. As that belief strengthened through the repetition of story, I began to love others and I was loved back. The racism I grew up with faded. The more I loved myself, the more beauty I saw in everyone else. The more I healed, the more I viewed the Bible and all of our great myths as stories told by others, and I looked more and more to my heart to find the right one for me.In six months, I joined with my life partner of five years and counting, became an Episcopalian, and replanted my political beliefs. And this I believe: the right story is the one that helps me to love myself the most, to create the most, to love others and to support them in their creations. For it is for those awesome experiences that I believe we are here. So I’m gay. And now, after decades of struggle, I tell a good story about it.Greg Chapman lives a few miles from the Houston hospital where he was born. Without warning, three dogs—an Afghan, a St. Bernard and a Dalmatian—pounced on the cocker and started tearing him to pieces. I shrieked for help. Two men in a car stopped, looked, and drove on.When I saw that I was so infuriated that I waded in and stopped the fight myself. My theatrical training never stood me in better stead. My shouts were so authoritative, my gestures so arresting, I commanded the situation like a lion-tamer and the dogs finally slunk away.Looking back, I think I acted less in anger than from a realization that I was on my own, that if anybody was going to help me at that moment, it had to be myself.Life seems to be a series of crises that have to be faced. In summoning strength to face them, though, I once fooled myself into an exaggerated regard of my own importance. I felt very independent. I was only distantly aware of other people. I worked hard and was ―successful.‖ In the theater, I was brought up in the tradition of service. The audience pays its money and you are expected to give your best performance—both on and off the stage. So I served on committees, and made speeches, and backed causes. But somehow the meaning of things escaped me.When my daughter died of polio, everybody stretched out a hand to help me, but at first I couldn’t seem to bear the touch of anything, even the love of friends; no support seemed strong enough. While Mary was still sick, I used to go early in the morning to a little church near the hospital to pray. There the working people came quietly to worship. I had been careless with my religion. I had rather cut God out of my life, and I didn’t have the nerve at the time to ask Him to make my daughter well—I only asked Him to help me understand, to let me come in and reach Him. I prayed there every morning and I kept looking for a revelation, but nothing happened. And then, much later, I discovered that it had happened, right there in the church. I could recall, vividly, one by one, the people I had seen there—the solemn laborers with tired looks, the old women with gnarled hands. Life had knocked them around, but for a brief moment they were being refreshed by an ennobling experience. It seemed as they prayed their worn faces lighted up and they became the very vessels of God. Here was my revelation. Suddenly I realized I was one of them. In my need I gained strength from the knowledge that they too had needs, and I felt an interdependence with them. I experienced a flood of compassion for people. I was learning the meaning of ―Love thy neighbor….‖Truths as old and simple as this began to light up for me like the faces of the men and women in the little church. When I read the Bible now, as I do frequently, I take the teachings of men like Jesus and David and St. Paul as the helpful advice of trusted friends about how to live. They understand that life is full of complications and often heavy blows and they are showing me the wisest way through it. I must help myself, yes, but I am not such a self-contained unit that I can live aloof, unto myself. This was the meaning that had been missing before: the realization that I was a living part of God’s world of people.Known as the First Lady of American Theater, Helen Hayes was a star of Broadway, movies and television. She received three Tony Awards in her 60 years on stage. Her movies ranged from The Sin of Madelon Claudet (1931) to Airport (1970), both of which garnered her Academy Awards. (Photo courtesy of The Helen Hayes Awards)A public man must live in the presentI believe in a moral code based on the Ten Commandments found in the 20th Chapter of Exodus, and in the 5th, 6th and 7th Chapters of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, which is the Sermon on the Mount.I believe a man ought to live by those precepts, which, if followed, will enable a man to do right.I don’t know whether I have or not, but I have tried.I believe that the fundamental basis for a happy life with family and friends is to treat others as you would like to be treated, speak truthfully, act honorably, and keep commitments to the letter. In public life I have always believed that right will prevail. It has been my policy to obtain the facts – all the facts possible – then to make the decision in the public interest and to carry it out.If the facts justify the decision at the time it is made, it will always be right. A public man should not worry constantly about the verdict of history or what future generations will say about him. He must live in the present; make his decisions for the right on the facts as he sees them and history will take care of itself.I believe a public man must know the history and background of his state and his nation to enable him to come more nearly to a proper decision in the public interest. In my opinion, a man in public life must think always of the public welfare. He must be careful not to mix his private and personal interests with his public actions. The ethics of a public man must be unimpeachable. He must learn to reject unwise or imprudent requests from friends and associates without losing their friendship or loyalty.I believe that our Bill of Rights must be implemented in fact; that it is the duty of every Government – state, local or Federal – to preserve the rights of the individual.I believe that a civil rights program, as we must practice it today, involves not so much the protection of the people against the Government, but the protection of the people by the Government. And for this reason we must make the Federal Government a friendly, vigilant defender of the rights and equalities of all Americans; and that every man should be free to live his life as he wishes. He should be limited only by his responsibility to his fellow man.I believe that we should remove the last barriers which stand between millions of our people and their birthright. There can be no justifiable reason for discrimination because of ancestry, or religion, or race, or color.I believe that to inspire the people of the world whose freedom is in jeopardy, and to restore hope to those who have already lost their civil liberties, we must correct the remaining imperfections in our own democracy. We know the way – we only need the will.Harry Truman was the 33rd President of the United States, serving from 1945 to 1953. Born and raised in Missouri, Truman was a farmer, businessman, World War I veteran and U. S. senator. As President, his order to drop atomic bombs on Japan helped end World War II.A shared moment of trustOne night recently I was driving down a two lane highway at about 60 miles an hour.A car approached from the opposite direction at about the same speed. As we passed each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for on ly a second.I wondered whether he might be thinking, as I was, how dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall asleep, not to be distracted by a cell phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life suddenly to an end. And though we were strangers to each other, he relied upon me in just the same way.Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world works. At some level we all depend upon one another to act in a way that avoids mutual destruction. Sometimes that dependence requires us simply to refrain from doing something —like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act cooperatively — as in the case of profound threats to our health or safety. One familiar example of a serious problem that could not have been solved — or could not have been solved as promptly — without worldwide cooperation is the SARS epidemic. In 2003, SARS claimed 700 lives and threatened to spread around the world. The virus had to be quickly identified and controlled. That was too big an undertaking for any one country, but scientists from five nations were able —working together — to identify the virus in record time. Doctors around the world then brought the outbreak quickly under control.Another area in which international cooperation is essential is terrorism. In the continuing struggle against this lethal threat, we cannot prevail without cooperation among the law enforcement agencies. intelligence services, and sometimes the military establishments of countries around the world. The daily news from Iraq and Afghanistan underscores just how much even America, the super power, needs such help.Americans are a people who value their freedom to do what they want to do, when and how they want to do it. But we cannot escape the reality that in ways large and small, we live in an interdependent world. Only the unwise would say that an individual or a nation can go it alone.Warren Christopher was U.S. Secretary of State from 1993 to 1997.
