必修4 Unit 2 Working the land李仕才一、阅读理解A“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.〞—Albert Einstein If you have a kid with special needs in the school system, chances are you have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My fiveyearold daughter Syona has cerebral palsy(脑瘫) and it means, combined with her communication challenges and sight problems, that standard assessments (and by “standard〞, I mean the ones used to assess kids with special needs) aren't always an accurate measure of her abilities.By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26yearold teacher in Jacksonville, Florida, who starts his special education class by calling up each student individually to give them much admiration and a high five. I couldn't help but be reminded of Syona's teacher and how he supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their conf idence and selfworth increase rapidly,〞 he said. All I could think was: How lucky these students are to have such a inspirational teacher.Syona's teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: awesome. Her teacher doesn't focus on what can't be done—she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona's confidence increase tenfold. She uses words she wouldn't have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmate's trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try.I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. We've recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all possess. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will become increasingly confident aboutprogress and success.Ulmer's reach as a teacher goes far beyond the walls of his classroom. In fact, he teaches all of us to take a moment and truly appreciate the strengths of an important person in our lives.【文章大意】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。

Whenever something looks interesting or beautiful, there is a natural desire of us to capture(捕捉) and preserve it—which means, in this day and age, that we are likely to reach for our phones to take a picture.Though this would seem to be an ideal solution, there are two big problems associated with taking pictures. Firstly, we are likely to be so busy taking pictures that we forget to look at the world whose beauty and interest encourage us to take a photograph in the first place. And secondly, because we feel the pictures are safely stored on our phones, we never get around to looking at them, so sure are we that we’ll get around to them one day.The first person to notice the problems was the English art critic(评论家), John Ruskin. He was a keen traveler who realized that most tourists make a poor job of noticing or remembering the beautiful things they see. He argued that humans have a natural tendency to respond to beauty and desire to have it, but there are better and worse expressions of this desire. At worst, we get into buying souvenirs or taking photographs. But, in Ruskin’s eyes, there’s just one thing we should do—attempting to draw the interesting things we see, regardless of whether we happen to have any talent for doing so.Ruskin said, “Drawing can teach us to see: to notice properly rather than gaze absentmindedly. In the process of recreating with our own hands what lies before our eyes, we naturally move from a position of observing beauty in a loose way to one where we acquire a deep understanding of its parts.”Ruskin deplored the blindness and hurry of modern tourists, especially those who prided themselves on traveling around the whole Europe in a week by train, “Nochanging of places at a hundred miles an hour will make us stronger, happier, or wiser. There was always more in the world than men could see, if they ever walked slowly. The really precious things are thoughts and sights, not pace.”【解题导语】本文要紧讨论了旅行中如何享受美景以及游客普遍存在的问题。

Those who claim bananas are fattening argue that bananas cause the body to make lots of insulin(胰岛素), and insulin causes fat growth. How much insulin we produce is related to how fast food becomes sugar in our bloodstream. How can you know if food makes a lot of sugar quickly? The glycemic index(血糖指数), or GI rating tells us. Foods with GI scores above 75 are considered highGI foods, leading to faster sugar development. Bananas have a GI of 62, which is considered low.Weight loss can be a struggle for anyone, but it is especially hard for diabetics(糖尿病患者). A study looked at how the starch from unripe bananas affected the weight of a group of obese diabetics. After four weeks of a diet high in bananas, diabetics lost significantly more weight than on a control diet. They also saw improvements in insulin sensitivity from the banana diet. What’s more, bananas have been shown to cut risks of strokes, diabetes and cancers.(Bananas are the most powerful fruit for lowering the risk of kidney cancer.) Bananas are also a rich source of fiber, which has been shown to help weight loss. Bananas that still have some green on the skin are even higher in fiber.Skins from green bananas can be taken and, after removing the stem and dark tip, cut into small pieces 2-3 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. These pieces can be made into a tea or added to a dish. When you eat the skins, be sure you are eating organic bananas. The flesh of regular bananas is low in pesticides, but the skins are not.【解题导语】本文反驳了“吃香蕉会令人发胖”这一错误观点,告诉大家香蕉不会使身体分泌很多胰岛素而导致脂肪添加,相反,香蕉对身体健康有着诸多好处。

Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2023全国新高考Ⅱ卷)Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is,says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts,a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.Jaramillo’s students live in neighbourhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores.“The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks,”she says.“They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.”Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new.Urban Sprouts’ classes,at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing,flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden.Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes.“We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they’re eating differently,”Jaramillo says. She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens.Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues.“They get outside,”she says,“and they feel successful.”1.What do we know about Abby Jaramillo?A.She used to be a health worker.B.She grew up in a low-income family.C.She owns a fast food restaurant.D.She is an initiator of Urban Sprouts.2.What was a problem facing Jaramillo at the start of the program?A.The kids’ parents distrusted her.B.Students had little time for her classes.C.Some kids disliked garden work.D.There was no space for school gardens.3.Which of the following best describes the impact of the program?A.Far-reaching.B.Predictable.C.Short-lived.D.Unidentifiable.4.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Rescuing School GardensB.Experiencing Country LifeC.Growing Vegetable LoversD.Changing Local Landscape【语篇解读】本文是一篇记叙文。
