It was early morning in a small village in Kenya, Africa. Women and children were carrying heavy containers（容器）of water on their heads. They walked many miles to get the water. Who is the young woman? Her name is Emily. How did she help? She invented a water carrier for the people in Kenya.
Emily is an engineer. She designs（设计）useful products for places without many natural resources （资源）. These places often don’t have a lot of water. They also don’t have a lot of oil, coal or gas. Emily’s products don’t use oil, coal or gas. They use other kinds of energy, such as the sun.
How did Emily start? As a young child in England, she loved to work with her grandfather in his workshop. He taught her how to use his tools. He showed her how to make toys and boxes from small pieces of metal. Emily designed her first product when she was in high school and just 15 years old. While she was a high school student, she designed a new kind of fridge. Why? Fridges normally use a lot of electricity. They are too expensive for many people in developing countries. All our food comes from the soil . Some of us eat meat, but animals live on plants. If there are no plants, we will have no animals and meat. So the soil is necessary for us to live. The top of ground is usually covered with grass or other plants. Plants grow in soil, which has a dark color. This dark soil is humus. Dead leaves, dead plants and animals' waste make it, but this takes a long time.
When the humus has been made, plants can grow well in it. All soil needs food. If we don't give it any, the plants will be weak. Animals' waste is the best food for the soil, but chemical fertilizers (化肥) are also very useful. The same crop should not be grown in the same place every year. It is better to have a different crop. A change of crop and the use of a good fertilizer will keep the land in good condition .
When the soil is dry, the wind blows it away. Sometimes heavy rain carries the humus down to a river. People should grow more and more trees and grass to stop wind from carrying the humus away. There have been many great inventions or things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was the one that is still very important today--the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distance. For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn't have to explore much any more. They began to work instead to make life better.
In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all play a big part in our daily life today.
The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909, movies with sound in 1926, the computer in 1928, jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wore.
The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They worked very well. They made people healthier and allowed them to live longer. By the 1960s most people could expect to live to be at least 60.
By this time most people in developed countries had a very good life. Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire (渴望) to explore again. The earth was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their own steps into space.
In 1969 man took his biggest step away from earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning, though. New inventions will some day allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.
