Great Expectations

Mrs. Joe Gargery, Pip's hottempered adult sister, who raises him after the death of their parents but complains constantly of the burden Pip is to her. Orlick, her husband's journeyman, attacks her and she is left disabled until her death.
Philip Pirrip, nicknamed Pip, an orphan and the protagonist of Great Expectations. Throughout his childhood, Pip thought that he was going to be trained as a blacksmith, but with Magwich's anonymous patronage, Pip travels to London and becomes a gentleman.
Estella Miss Havisham’s beautiful young ward (受监护人）, Estella is Pip’s unattainable dream throughout the novel. He loves her passionately, but, though she sometimes seems to consider him a friend, she is usually cold, cruel, and uninterested in him. As they grow up together, she repeatedly warns him that she has no heart.

Miss Havisham, Miss Havisham is the wealthy, eccentric（古怪的）old woman who lives in a manor（庄园）called Satis House near Pip’s village. She is manic（狂躁的） and often seems insane（疯狂的）, flitting around her house in a faded wedding dress, keeping a decaying feast on her table, and surrounding herself with clocks stopped at twenty minutes to nine. She deliberately raises Estella to be the tool of her revenge, training her beautiful ward to break men’s hearts.

Joe Gargery, Pip's brother-in-law, and his first father figure. He is a blacksmith who is always kind to Pip and the only person with whom Pip is always honest. Joe was very disappointed when Pip decided to leave his home and travel to London to become a gentleman rather than be a blacksmith.
Fortunately, he got an opportunity to inherit a fortune and to be well educated as a gentleman. He felt abashed of Joe and even looked down upon his old friends. Nevertheless, after Pip had discovered the unbelievable truth, he gradually woke up to reality and realized his fault. He forgave and save his enemy, protected and supported his friends and became grateful to Joe. In the end ,he gained his love.
