We drove for what felt like forever without seeing many hills or cities.Eventually we made it to Chicago, one of my favorite stops on the trip. We went up to the top of the Willis Tower Skydeck and looked out over the whole city - it was a little scary being that high up but the view was incredible! We also visited the Field Museum to see the dinosaur skeletons and learned all about the Great Chicago Fire. Of course, we couldn't leave without trying an authentic Chicago-style deep dish pizza. I had never been that far away from home before, so I was really excited!The journey there took forever though. We had to drive for like, three days straight! My little brother kept asking "Are we there yet?" over and over again. Mom and Dad tried their best to keep us entertained in the car by singing road trip songs and playing games. But after a while, it got pretty boring just sittingthere. I was super relieved when we finally made it to Yellowstone.When we first arrived, I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. Massive mountains towered all around us, with snow still capping the peaks despite it being summer. The landscapes looked like scenes from a movie, with sprawling forests, rushing rivers, and wildlife roaming everywhere. Our hotel was right inside the park boundaries, so we were surrounded by nature. It was like entering another world!On our first day, we hiked up to this incredible waterfall called Grand Prismatic Spring. The water was the craziest colors I had ever seen - vibrant reds, oranges, and blues all swirling together. It looked like a rainbow had melted into the spring. Seeing that made me really appreciate the raw power of nature that shaped this amazing place over eons. We even got to see the famous Yellowstone Falls, where the whole river just drops over the edge in an almighty roar. The colors were so bright and beautiful, like nothing I've ever seen before. Turquoise, orange, red, and yellow all blending together in the most mesmerizing way.Later that day, we saw Old Faithful erupt, which was amazing. You could see the massive spray of water and steam rocketing hundreds of feet into the air. It was like a natural geyser show happening right in front of us! The rangers said it happens so regularly you can practically set your watch by it.We spent the next few days exploring other trails and thermal areas in the park. We saw the Fountain Paint Pot area which had all these bubbling mud pots that looked and sounded so strange. We also went to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, which isn't actually part of the Grand Canyon but it's still this enormous, colorful canyon carved out by the mighty Yellowstone River over millions of years. The views from the hiking trails along the canyon rim were breathtaking.One evening we went to an outdoor theater where they did a show about the Yellowstone wildfires from back in 1988. The performers acted out the experiences of people who lived through it when a series of wildfires ended up burning over a third of the entire park! They used actual footage from the fires and it felt so real, like you were really there. I had nightmares about being trapped by wildfires that night!Another real highlight was getting to see so much wildlife in its natural habitat. We spotted herds of bison which areessentially just big, shaggy cows that can be kind of dangerous if you get too close to them. There were elk all over the place and we even saw a grizzly bear from our car! Seeing all those animals existing peacefully in the wild like they have for thousands of years was so cool.After a week in Yellowstone, we headed back home for a couple weeks before taking another trip down to San Diego to visit my aunt, uncle, and cousins who live there. San Diego is right on the Pacific Ocean and the beaches there are gorgeous.My cousin Austin and I had an absolute blast Swimming, bodyboarding, and building sandcastles. The waves were perfect for bodyboarding - not too big but big enough to give you a fun ride if you timed it right. We must have gone bodyboarding for hours each day.One day we went on a dolphin and whale watching tour by boat and we actually got to see a huge pod of dolphins Swimming alongside our boat! They were jumping out of the water and doing flips and putting on a little show for us. We didn't end up seeing any whales up close, but just seeing all those dolphins was incredible.We also spent a couple days at LegoLand, which is this awesome theme park that's all about Legos. They had rollercoasters, 4D movies, huge scenes and statues all built out of millions of Lego bricks, and my favorite - an area where you could build your own Lego creations with giant bins of random bricks. Austin and I made this sweet Lego pirate ship and a tiny Lego village.Another fun thing we did was go kayaking in the bay near where my aunt and uncle live. It was my first time really kayaking before and it was not as easy as it looks! I kept struggling to paddle in a straight line at first but I eventually got the hang of it. We explored some little coves and inlets and sawsome cool birds and other marine life. I even jumped out of the kayak and went Swimming for a while since the water felt amazing.On our last day in San Diego, we visited the world-famous San Diego Zoo. That place was enormous and had like 4,000 different animals from all around the world. My favorites were probably the gorillas, which are these huge, powerful apes that are so closely related to humans. It was almost like looking into a mirror in a way. The polar bears were also really cool to see up close as they swam through their gigantic habitat.After two incredible trips, I was almost sad when it was time to come home and get ready to go back to school. Almost. This school year is going to be awesome since I'm finally in 6th gradeand at the top of the elementary school hierarchy. I feel so much more grown up already. Although I'll definitely miss having my summer freedom, I'm really excited to see my friends again and to start learning new things.I just hope I don't have too much homework this year so that I can spend time after school playing sports, riding my bike, and just hanging out and being a kid for one more year before everything changes in middle school.
