国王赠大象
“White elephant ”即“白象”。
白象在今天的泰国、缅甸等地被奉若神明。
在古代，由于白象为数极少，只有国王才能据为己有。
王室规定不准任何人使役白象，更禁止它来驮人运货。
但另一方面，国王如果对某一大臣不满时，便赐给他一头白象。
国王用心可谓良苦，因为他知道，接受了馈赠的大臣是决不敢怠慢他的白象的。
一头白象每天需要耗去大量的食物，家财不够殷实的大臣因饲养日耗千金的白象，用不了多长时间便会倾家荡产。
“White elephant ”在英语里借指“耗费巨大，无用而又成累赘的东西”或“沉重的负担”。
