Reading ComprehensionDirections:There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A. B. C and D. Choose the ONE you thinkis the best answer.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. The Journey two divers made some time ago to the very deepest point on the earth makes us realize how much of the world still remain to be studied. The two men went down seven miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean inside a small steel ball to find out if there are any ocean currents or signs of life.It was necessary to set out early, so that the ball would come to the surface in daylight and so be easily found by the mother ship which would be waiting for it. The divers began preparations early in the morning and soon afterwards, when all was ready, the steel ball disappeared under the surface of the water. The divers felt as if they were going down steps as they passed through warm and cold layers of water. In time the temperature dropped to freezing point. They kept in touch with the mother ship by telephone telling how they felt. Then, at a depth of 3,000 feet, the telephone stopped working and they were quite cut off from the outside world. All went well until some four hours later at 30,000 feet, the men were frightened by a loud, cracking noise: even the smallest hole in the ball would have meant instant death. Luckily, though, it was only one of the outer windows that had broken. Soon afterwards, the ball touched the soft ocean floor raising a big cloud of “dust” made up of small dead sea creatures. Here, powerful lights lit up the dark wat er and the men were surprised to see fish swimming just above them quite untroubled by the great water-pressure. But they did not dare to leave the lights on for long, as the heat from them made the water boil. Quite unexpectedly, the telephone began working again and the faint but clear voices of the divers were heard on the mother ship seven miles away. After a stay of thirty minutes the men began their journey up, arriving three hours later, cold and wet through, but none the worse for their experience.1. The purpose of the divers’ journey to the deepest point on the earth is to find ______ in the great depths.A. if there are stepsB. if people can stand the severe coldC. if there are water currents and lifeD. if the telephone works well2. The divers set out early in the morning so that they could ______.A. return to the surface during the dayB. see at the bottom of the oceanC. avoid the cold at nightD. stay long at the bottom3. Which of the following statements is true?A. The ocean water temperature decreases steadily with the depth.B. There are steps on the way to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.C. There are steps between the water layers of different temperatures.D. The water layers of different temperatures made the divers feel as if they were going down steps.4. As the divers went down to the ocean floor, the telephone _____.A. kept working all the timeB. stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again after they reached the bottomC. stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again at 30,000 feetD. stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again when they returned to the same depth5. On the ocean floor, the divers found that ______.A. there was no life but some small dead sea creaturesB. fish were swimming as freely as they do near the surfaceC. fish were not swimming freely in the dark waterD. fish were not swimming freely under the high water pressureQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. The world’s population continues to grow. There are about 4 billion of us on earth. That could reach 6 billion by the end of the century and 11 billion in another 75 years. Experts have long been concerned about such growth. Where will we find the food, water, jobs, houses, schools and health care for all these people?A major new study shows that the situation may be changing. A large and rapid drop in the world’s birth rate has been taken place during the past 10 years. Families generally are smaller now than they were a few years ago. It is happening in both developing and industrial nations.Researchers said they found a number of reasons for this. More men and women are waiting longer to get married and are using birth control devices and methods to prevent or delay pregnancy. More women are going to school or working at jobs away from their homes instead of having children. And more governments, especially in developing nations, now support family planning programs to reduce population growth.China is one of the nations that has made great progress in reducing its population growth. China has already cut its rate of population growth by about one half since 1970. China now urges each family to have no more than one child. And it hopes to reach zero population growth, the number of births equaling the number of deaths, by the year 2000.Several nations in Europe already have fewer births than deaths. Experts said that these nations could face a serious shortage of workers in the future. And the persons who are working could face much higher taxes to help support the growing number of retired people.6. In Paragraph One, the sentence “Experts have long been concerned about such growth”, the phrase “con cernedabout” is similar in meaning to ________.A. engaged inB. related toC. worried aboutD. made a study of7. The world’s birth rate has dropped because _________.A. people marry at a much later timeB. more birth control devices and methods have been usedC. women would rather go to study or work than have childrenD. all the above reasons are true8. “Family planning programs” means ________.A. birth control policy in a countryB. economic policy in a familyC. TV programs designed for a familyD. economic policy in a country9. By the year 2000, the number of births and the number of deaths in China will ________.A. be greatly differentB. be equal to each otherC. drop a great dealD. become much larger10. Some time in the future, the people who are working in Europe would have to pay much higher taxes because________.A. more and more children will be bornB. fewer and fewer children will be bornC. the number of retired people will become ever largerD. they will be making a lot of moneyQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. The market is a concept. If you are growing tomatoes in your backyard for sale you are producing for the market. You might sell some to your neighbor and some to the manager of the local supermarket. But in either case, you are producing for the market. Your efforts are being directed by the market. If people stop buying tomatoes, you will stop producing them.If you take care of a sick person to earn money, you are producing for the market. If your father is a steel worker or a truck driver or a doctor or a grocer, he is producing goods or service for the market. When you spend your income, you are buying things from the market. You may spend money in stores, supermarkets, gas stations, and restaurants. Still you are buying from the market. She carried the coin-laden bucket to the elevator. As she was about to walk into the elevator she noticed two men already aboard. Both were black. One of them was big, very big. The woman froze. Her first thought was: These two are going to rob me.Her next thought was: Don't be silly; they look like perfectly nice gentlemen. But she could not move a step out of fear. She stood and stared at the two men. She felt anxious, nervous and ashamed. She hoped they didn'tread her mind. Surely they knew that her hesitation about joining them in the elevator was all too obvious. Her face became red. She couldn't just stand there, so with a mighty effort of will she picked up one foot and stepped forward and followed with the other foot and was on the elevator.Avoiding eye contact, she turned around stiffly and faced the elevator doors as they closed. A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased! The elevator didn't move. Panic consumed her. "My God," she thought, "I'm trapped and about to be robbed!" Her heart sank. Then ... one of the men said, "Hit the floor."Instinct told her: Do what they tell you. The bucket of quarters flew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed on the elevator carpet. A shower of coins rained down on her. "Take my money and spare me," she prayed. More seconds passed. She heard one of the men say politely, "Ma'am, if you'll just tell us what floor you're going to, we'll push the button." She lifted her head and looked up at the two men. They reached down to help her up.Confused, she struggled to her feet. "When I told my man here to hit the floor," said the average-sized one, "I meant that he should hit the elevator button for our floor. I didn't mean for you to hit the floor, ma'am".She was too ashamed to speak. She wanted to burst out an apology, but words failed her.
