Now let us look at how we read. When we read a printed text, our eyes move across a page in short, jerky movement. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recog nition span or the visual span. The length of time of which the eyes stop ---the duration of the fixation ----varies considerably from person to person. It also vaies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness.

Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printed page. As a result of this misleading emp hasis on the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to tra in the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on eith er side. Such word patterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many exper ts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approac h which

trains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him i n reading a continuous text.

1. The time of the recognition span can be affected by the following facts except __ ______ .

A. one’s familia rity with the text

B. one’s purpose in reading

C. the length of a group of words

D. lighting and tiredness

2. The author may believe that reading ______.

A. requires a reader to take in more words at each fixation

B. requires a reader to see words more quickly

C. demands an deeply-participating mind

D. demands more mind than eyes

3 What does the author mean by saying “but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ab ility to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently.”in the second parapraph?

A. The ability to see words is not needed when an efficient reading is conducted.

B. The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to improve both the ability to see and to comprehend words.

C. The reading exercis es mentioned can’t help to improve an efficient reading.

D. The reading exercises mentioned has done a great job to improve one’s ability to see words.

4. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. The visual span is a word or a group of words we see each time.

B. Many experts began to question the efficiency of eye training.

C. The emphasis on the purely visual aspects is misleading.

D.The eye training will help readers in reading a continuous text.

5 A。参考前面的结构剖析,作者写本文的主要目的是对那些只关注阅读的视觉因素的阅读能力课程进行批判,所以答案应该是A。

Psychiatrists (精神病专家) who work with older parents say that maturity can be an asset in child rearing-older parents are more thoughtful, use less physical discipline and spend more time with their children. But raising kids takes money and energy. Many older pare nts find themselves balancing their limited financial resources, declining energy and failing health against the growing demands of an active child. Dying and leaving young children is probably the older parents’ biggest, and often unspoken, fear. Having late-life children, says an economics professor, often means parents, particularly fathers, “end up retiring m uch later.” For many, retirement becomes an unobtainable dream.

Henry Metcalf, a 54-year-old journalist, knows it takes money to raise kids. But he’s also worried that his energy will give out first. Sure, he can still ride bikes with his athl etic fifth grader, but he’s learned that young at heart doesn’t mean young. Lately he’s bee n taking afternoon naps (午睡) to keep up his energy. “My body is aging,” says Metcalf.“You can’t get away from that.”

Often, older parents hear the ticking of another kind of biological clock. Therapists w ho work with middle-aged and older parents say fears about aging are nothing to laugh at.“They worry they’ll be mistaken for grandparents, or that they’ll need help getting up ou t of those little chairs in nursery school,” says Joann Galst, a New York psychologist. Bu t at the core of those little fears there is often a much bigger one: “that they won’t be al ive long enough to support and protect their child,” she says.

Many late-life parents, though, say their children came at just the right time. After m arrying late and undergoing years of fertility (受孕) treatment, Marilyn Nolen and her hus band. Randy, had twins. “We both wanted children,” says Marilyn, who was 55 when she

gave birth. The twins have given the couple what they desired for years, “a sense of fa mily.” K ids of older dads are often smarter, happier and more sociable because their fathe rs are more involved in their lives. “The dads are older, more mature,” says Dr. Silber,“and more ready to focus on parenting.”

36. Why do psychiatrists regard maturity as an asset in child rearing?

A) Older parents are often better prepared financially.

B) Older parents can take better care of their children.

C) Older parents are usually more experienced in bringing up their children.

D) Older parents can better balance their resources against children’s demands.

37. What does the author mean by saying “For many, retirement becomes an unobtai nable dream” (Lines 7-8, Para. 1)?

B) They can’t obtain the retirement benefits they have dreamed of.

C) They can’t get full pension unless they work some extra years.

D) They have to go on working beyond their retirement age.

38. The author gives the example of Henry Metcalf to show that ________.

A) older parents should exercise more to keep up with their athletic children

B) many people are young in spirit despite their advanced age

C) older parents tend to be concerned about their aging bodies

D) taking afternoon naps is a good way to maintain energy

39. What’s the biggest fear of older parents according to New York psychologist Joa n Galst?

A) Approaching of death.

B) Slowing down of their pace of life.

C) Being laughed at by other people.

D) Being mistaken for grandparents.

A) They thought they were an example of successful fertility treatment.

B) Not until they reached middle age did they think of having children.

The political background of the atomic scientists' work was the determination to defeat the Nazis. It was held—I think rightly—that a Nazi victory would be an appalling (令人惊骇的) disaster. It was also held, in Western countries, that German scientists must be we

ll advanced towards making an A-bomb, and that if they succeeded before the West did t hey would probably win the war. When the war was over, it was discovered, to the com plete astonishment of both American and British Scientists, that the Germans were nowher e near success, and, as everybody knows, the Germans were defeated before any nuclear weapons had been made. But I do not think that nuclear scientists of the West can be bl amed for thinking the work urgent and necessary. Even Einstein favored it.

When, however, the German war was finished the great majority of those scientists w ho had collaborated toward making the A-bomb considered that it should not be used agai nst the Japanese, who were already on the verge of defeat and, in any case, did not cons titute such a threat to the world as Hitler. Many of them made urgent representations to t he American government advocating that, instead of using the bomb as a weapon of war, they should, after a public announcement, explode it in a desert, and that future control of nuclear energy should be placed in the hands of an international authority. Seven of th e most famous of nuclear scientists drew up what is known as "the Franck Report" which they presented to the Secretary of War in June 1945. This is a very admirable and far-s eeing document, and if it had won the assent of the politicians, none of our subsequent te rrors would have arisen.

21. We may infer that the writer's attitude towards the A-bomb is that______.

A. it is absolutely necessary

B. it is a terrible threat to the whole of mankind

C. it played a vital part in defeating the Japanese

D. it was a wonderful invention

22. The American and British scientists were astonished at the end of the Second W orld War against Germany because______.

A. the Germans had been defeated without the use of nuclear weapons

B. the Western countries had won before they had invented nuclear weapons

C. they thought the Germans would probably win the war

D. the Germans had made little progress in developing nuclear weapons

23. According to the writer, most scientists who had helped in making the A-bomb c onsidered that it should not be used against the Japanese because______.

A. it was such a dangerous weapon

B. its use against the Japanese was unnecessary

C. it was a very inhumane weapon

D. the German war was finished

24. The passage implies, but does not directly say, that the nuclear scientists______.

A. might not have agreed to develop the bomb if there had been no Nazi threat

B. would have developed the bomb even without the Nazi threat

C. would have made the bomb, under peace-time conditions, but only for the use of an international authority

D. developed the bomb because Einstein thought it urgent and necessary

25. The main point in the second paragraph is______.

A. that nuclear weapons proved unnecessary

B. that the Franck Report, which recommended that the bomb should be placed in th e hands of an international authority, was rejected

C. that many scientists tried, unsuccessfully, to persuade the politicians to abandon nu clear bombs, and place nuclear energy in the hands of an international authority

D. both A and C

A wise man once said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. So, as a police officer, I have some urgent things to say to good peo ple.

Day after day my men and I struggle to hold back a tidal wave of crime. Something has gone terribly wrong with our once-proud American way of life. It has happened in t he area of values. A key ingredient is disappearing, and I think I know what it is: accou ntability (责任感).

My job as a police pfficer is to impose accountability on people who refuse, or have never learned, to impose it on themselves. But as every policeman knows, external contr ol on people's behavior is far less effective than internal restraints such as guilt, shame an d embarrassment.

Fortunately there are still communities—smaller towns, usually—where schools maintai n discipline and where parents hold up standards that proclaim:

"In this family certain things are not tolerated—they simply are not done!"

Yet more and more, especially in our large cities and suburbs, these inner restraints a re loosening. Your typical robber has none. He considers your property his property; he ta kes what he wants, including your life if you enrage him.

The main cause of this break-down is a radical shift in attitudes. Thirty years ago, if a crime was committed, society was considered the victim. Now, in a shocking reversal, it's the criminal who is considered victimized: by his underprivileged upbringing, by the s chool that didn't teach him to read, by the church that failed to reach him with moral gui dance, by the parents who didn't provide a stable home.

I don't believe it. Many others in equally disadvantaged circumstances choose not to engage in criminal activities. If we free the criminal, even partly, from accountability, we become a society of endless excuses where no one accepts responsibility for anything.

Americans desperately need more people who believe that the person who commits a crime is the one responsible for it.

21. What the wise man said suggests that______.

A. it's certain that evil will prevail if good men do nothing about it

B. it's unnecessary for good people to do anything in face of evil

C. it's only natural for virtue to defeat evil

D. it's desirable for good men to keep away from evil

22. According to the author, if a person is found guilty of a crime, ______.

A. society is to be held responsible

B. modern civilization is responsible for it

C. the standards of living should be improved

D. the criminal himself should bear the blame

23. Compared with those in small towns, people in large cities have A. better sense of discipline B. more mutual respect C. less effective government D. less self-discipline

24. The writer is sorry to have noticed that______.

A. people in large cities tend to excuse criminals

B. people in small towns still stick to old discipline and standards

C. today's society lacks sympathy for people in difficulty

D. people in disadvantaged circumstances are engaged in criminal activities

25. The key point of the passage is that

A. stricter discipline should be maintained in schools and families

B. more good examples should be set for people to follow

C. more people should accept the value of accountability

D. more restrictions should be imposed on people

21. A 22. D 23. D 24. A 25. C

(英语)英语阅读理解练习题20篇及解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Many people have long dreamed of being able to fly around as simply as riding a bicycle. Yet the safety and strength of a flying bike was always a big problem. Over the past 10 years, developments in technology have moved the dream of personal flying vehicles closer to reality. Now, two groups of inventors say such vehicles may be available soon. The British company Malloy Aeronautics has developed a prototype (原型) of its flying bicycle. Grant Stapleton, marketing sales director of Malloy Aeronautics, says the Hoverbike is able to get in and out of small spaces very quickly. It can be moved across continents very quickly because it can be folded and packed, he adds. Mr. Stapleton says safety was the company's main concern. He says the designers solved the safety issue by using overlapping rotors ( 交叠式旋翼 )to power the vehicle. The company is testing a full-size prototype of the Hoverbike, which will most likely be used first by the police and emergency rescue teams. In New Zealand, the Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a full-size prototype of its personal flying device, called the Jetpack. It can fly for more than 30 minutes, up to 1,000 meters high and reach a speed of 74 kilometers per hour. Peter Coker is the CEO of Martin Aircraft Company. He said the Jetpack “is built around safety from the start. In his words, reliability is the most important element of it. We have safety built into the actual structure itself, very similar to a Formula One racing car.” The Jetpack uses a gasoline-powered engine that produces two powerful jet streams. Mr. Coker says it also has a parachute (降落伞) that can be used should there be an emergency. “It starts to work at very low altitude and actually saves both the aircraft and the pilot,” he adds. Mr. Coker says the Jetpack will be ready for sale soon. (1)We can learn from the passage that the Hoverbike . In a farm family, parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Often, too, uncles and aunts lived nearby. But when industry became more important than agriculture in American life, families became smaller because industry requires workers who are ready and able to move off the land and to move again whenever necessary. And large families can not be moved from place to place as smaller families can. So, at present people tend to have smaller families. In the future, because of industrialization, a typical family will be required to move even more often than now, so families will be even smaller. The typical family may remain childless and consists only of a man and a woman. A small number of families may take child raising as their chief work. 大学英语一阅读理解 一、阅读理解(共505题,共101分) 1. Few laws are so effective that you can see results just days after they take effect. But in the nine days since the federal cigarette tax more than doubled—to $1. 01 per pack—smokers have jammed telephone “quit lines” acro ss the country seeking to kick the habit. This is not a surprise to public health advocates. They’ve studied the effect of state tax increases for years, finding that smokers, especially teens, are price sensitive. Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fiercely fights every tax increase. The only wonder is that so many states insist on closing their ears to the message. Tobacco taxes improve public health, health, they raise money and most particularly, they deter people from taking up the habit as teens, which is when nearly all smokers are addicted. Yet the rate of taxation varies widely. In Manhattan, for instance, which has the highest tax in the nation, a pack of Marlboro Light Kings cost $10.06 at one drugstore Wednesday. Charleston, S, C., where the 7-cent-a-pack tax is the lowest in the nation. The price was $4. 78. The influence is obvious. In New York, high school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys—13.8%, far below the national average. By comparison, 26% of high school students smoke in Kentucky, Other low-tax states have similarly depressing teen-smoking records. Hal Rogers, Representative from Kentucky, like those who are against high tobacco taxes, argues that the burden of the tax falls on low-income Americans “who choose to smoke.” That’s true, But there is more reason in keeping future generations of low-income workers from getting hooked in the first place, As for today’s adults, if the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend on their families, cut their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better.
