The technology is great. Without it we wouldn’t have been able to put a man on the moon, explore the ocean’s depths or eat microwave sausages. Computers have revolutionized our lives and they have the power to educate and pass on knowledge. But sometimes this power can create more problems than itsolves.(According to this paragraph, what will this passage talk about ?)Every doctor has had to try their best to calm down patients who’ve come into their surgery waving an Internet print-out, convinced that they have some rare incurable disease, say, throat cancer. The truth is usually far more ordinary, though: they don’t have throat cancer, and it’s just that their throats are swollen. Being a graduate of the Int ernet “school” of medicine does not guarantee accurate self-health-checks.(What does the underlined sentence mean ?) One day Mrs. Almond came to my hospital after feeling faint at work. While I took her blood sample and tried to find out what was wron g, she said calmly, “I know what’s wrong;I’ve got throat cancer. I know there’s nothing you doctors can do about it and I’ve just got to wait until the day comes.”As a matter of routine I ordered a chest X-ray. I looked at it and the blood results an hour later.Something wasn’t right. “Did your local doctor do an X-ray?” I asked. “Oh, I haven’t been to the doctor for years,” she replied. “I read about it on a website and the symptoms fitted, so I knew that’s what I had.”However, some of her symptoms, like the severe cough and weight loss, didn’t fit with it — but she’d just ignored this.I looked at the X-ray again, and more tests confirmed it wasn’t the cancer but tuberculosis(肺结核)——something that most certainly did need treating, and could be deadly. She was lucky we caught it when we did.(Why does the writer tell the story of Mrs. Almond?)1.Mrs. Almond talked about her illness calmly because _________.A. she thought she knew it well.B. she had purchased medicine online.C. she graduated from a medical school.D. she had been treated by local doctors.2.It was lucky for Mrs. Almond _________.A. to have contacted many friendsB. to have recovered in a short timeC. to have her assumption confirmedD. to have her disease identified in time选词填空severe convince recover guarantee confirmsymptom ensure accurate as a matter of routine calm down1.2.All necessary steps have been taken to__________the president’s safety.3.Even if you complete your training, I can’t__________you a job.4.Do you know the first__________of malaria?5.The expression on his face__________my doubt.6.After a few days of fever, he began to __________.7.He is suffering from__________injuries to the head and neck.8.Jane couldn’t give an__________description of the attacker.9.After half an hour, he was able to__________and told us what had happened to him.10.__________, he made sure that everything was OK before he left the room. I love my Blackberry ——it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me.I also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thought. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices and trulycommunicate with others.(What does the writer think of the devices with high technology?) AOn occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule —— no laptop, iPads, iPhones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.1.Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with _________ .A. the course materialB. others’ misuse of technologyC. discussion topicsD. the author’s class regulationsBMost students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students. The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas.I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course material and the class discussion.1.According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may _________ .A. keep students from doing independent thinkingB. encourage students to have in-depth conversationsC. help students to better understand complex themesD. affect students’ concentration on course evaluation阅读材料I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use i n my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few ho urs of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.(Will the writer change his teaching plan?) 1.2.We shall have opportunity to__________views tomorrow.3.The book is based on__________events.4.The engine of an airplane is very__________.5.I__________that our team would win.6.He is surprised to find his room__________cleaned.7.He received his__________in his dream.8.The express train reached Beijing ten minutes__________its schedule.9.It will take an hour to reach the airport,__________traffic delay.10.You’re walking too fast. I can't__________you. Fashion always keeps at least one eye on the future. Now scientists are lending a hand, developing tomorrow’s super-powered (超能) clothing such as coats that can recharge your MP3 player and make you stronger. For example, electronics could get recharged in the future simply by plugging (插上插座) them into your outer wear, because Australian researchers are designing clothing that can collect energy from a person. The coats would include small things that change vibration energy (动能) from a person’s movements into electricity. High-tech fabrics (纤维品) would carry this energy to batteries (电池).“It will look like an ordinary (common)coat but have super energy,” said Adam Be st, an Australian head research scientist. “This kind of technology has important uses for soldiers in the field and could mean they no longer need to carry heavy batteries.” Best added, “Above all, they’d be wearing the battery, not carrying it.” Besides helping soldiers, these coats could also have common uses for common people, such as powering radios, mobile phones, MP3 players or medical things. Solar-powered handbags could do the same thing.(What is special about the coat?)Thanks to self-cleaning fabrics developed by scientists working for the U.S. Air Force, underwear and sports clothing could go weeks without washing. The gene[ral idea of clothes that never get dirty canbe found in the 1951 film The Man in the While Suit. The new technology helps keep off water, oil and bacteria (细菌).High-tech fabrics could also help serve as protection. For example, future fabrics could lead to soft helmets (头盔) that turn hard in an accident. Not all the possible fabrics of tomorrow are necessarily high-tech. For example, chicken feathers (羽毛) and other things of the farming industry could get changed into wool-like fabrics or cotton-like ones, helping use fewer fabrics made from oil.1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the article?A. You can get electronic energy from your clothes in the future.B. Self-cleaning coats are developed for American scientists.C. We will no longer use fabrics made from oil in the future.D. The future high-tech clothing will be used only for soldiers.选词填空shoulderpowerrecharge thanks tokeep off serve as above all lead to1.__________2.He was so drunk that he had lost the __________ of speech.3.I found some newspapers in the room and they __________ curtain.4.My mother told me not to waste anything, and __________ never waste time.5.Can you tell me which way __________ the supermarket?6.Please tell me the kids to __________ the buttons, will you?7.You look tired.
