His job was to perform marr iages for Christian couples. Unfortunately the Emperor of Ro me didn't allow Christian marriages. So they had to be perfor med in secret(秘密地). Finally Valentine was arrested and put into prison. While he was in prison he fell in love with the daughter of the prison guard. After one year the Emperor offered to release(释放) Valentine if he would stop performing Christian marriages.Valentine refused and so he was killed in February, 270 A.D. If you tel ephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having bre akfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very import ant and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is at tached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone r eceives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. g uests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before th e party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointme nt too far in advance because plans which are made for a dat e more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderst andings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would t hink of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it wo uld be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late, will say a f ew words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.5、What is the main idea of this passage? ________A. It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning a nd in sleeping hours in the U.S.B. The role of time in social life over the world.C. Such goals can be achiev ed in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It sho uld be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than i ts foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievem ent of solid short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or th e entire school year, or they could even extend for several ye ars. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never all ow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability t o grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates gro w, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. My marks in school were miserable and, the thing was, I didn't know enough to really care. My older bother and I lived with Mom in an ugly multifamily house in Detroit. Every night after supper, we'd lie on Mom's bed and stare for hours at the TV screen. But one day Mom changed our world forever. She turned off the TV, sat us down and explained that her sons were going to make something of themselves. “You boys are going to read two books every week and write a report on what you read.”We moaned (不满,发牢骚) and complained about how unfair it was. Besides, we didn't have any books in the house other than Mom's Bible. But she explained that we would go where the books were: “I'll drive you to the library.”So pretty soon there were these two peevish (坏脾气的) boys in her Oldsmobile on their way to Detroit Public Library. The first book I read clear through was Chip the Dam Builder. It was about beavers (河狸).For the first time in my life I was lost in another world. No television program had ever taken me so far away from my surroundings as did this virtue visit to a cold stream in a forest and these animals building a home.It didn't dawn on (明白) me at the time, but the experience was quite different from watching TV. There were images forming in my mind instead of before my eyes. And I could return to them again and again with the flip (快速翻动) of a page.Soon I began to look forward to visiting this quiet sanctuary from my other world. Along the way a funny thing happened:I started to know things. Teachers started to notice it too. I got to the point where I couldn't wait to get home to my books. Now my older brother is an engineer and I am chief of pediatric neurosurgery (儿童神经外科). Yet, sitting in his office in Los Angeles, he agrees that the paperwork is getting easier. Granny flats — or Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) (附属居住单元), as Americans call them — have taken off in California and cities around the American West as house prices have risen. An ADU is a flat built in the same place as a single-family home. Owners rent them for money, or house family in them. About 180 cities in California passed ADU laws between 2017 and 2020. Los Angeles gave permits for nearly 6,700 units in 2019, up from about 4,100 in 2018. Seattle passed some 500 in 2020 and 800 in 2021. Tobias Peter of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) views ADUs as one example of “light-touch density (密度)”, which also includes making single-family homes into several units. Such changes may become more common in California thanks to a law passed last year which avoided single-family zoning (将……分区) Things are moving more slowly in cities with strict zoning conditions. Denver allowed just two granny flats in 2010 and 71 in 2019. Many single-family homeowners in Colorado’s capital who want to build an ADU must apply in person to have their place rezoned, which can take months. Permits and building can also be costly and confusing. That is where companies like Homestead come in. As interest in ADUs grows, so does the number of companies wanting to build them.High-density developments are also greener than single-family ones thanks to reduced heating and cooling costs, and shorter commutes (通勤). Adding units to areas near cities allows more people to live close to public bus stops and the places where they would work, reducing air pollution.Granny flats alone will not solve California’s housing crunch, but their popularity is a good sign. “If you create enough housing supplies (供应量),” says Mr Schneider, Los Angeles and SanFrancisco will “become places where people can actually live, and not places where people can only leave.”46.What can be inferred about the ADUs from the first paragraph?A.Sam Schneider’s granny signed her flat to him.B.Homestead is no good at preparing the paperwork.C.The paperwork was more difficult in the past than it is now.D.More and more Americans move to the American West to avoid increasing house prices. 47.How does the writer mainly develop the second paragraph?A.By listing numbers.B.By giving examples.C.By using an expert’s words.D.By explaining the reason and the result. 48.Why are there a growing number of companies dealing in ADUs?A.Because it is not easy to get permits or build an ADU.B.Because they meet the needs of people who want an ADU.C.Because some single-family homeowners don’t know how to apply for an ADU.D.Because it takes experienced companies less time and money to build an ADU. 49.What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?A.The advantages of ADUs.B.ADUs’ development.C.A single family’s living costs.D.Cities’ environmental problems. 50.Which of the following best explains the underlined part “housing crunch” in the last paragraph?A.There are no empty houses.B.There are not enough houses.C.There are only newly-built houses.D.There are only houses in the downtown are.Fat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class who was picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, basketball anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one who was always made fun of in school PE classes in Devonshire, England. It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength (力量).At the age of 18, he won his first long-distance race (长跑比赛).The following year he came across John Ridgway. He was hired as an instructor at Ridgway’s School of Adventure (探险) in Scotland, where he learned about Ridgway’s adventures. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could read about the North Pole explorers and adventures, and then decided this would be his future. In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier (滑雪者), Saunders started his first long-distance adventure towards the North Pole. It took him a lot of hard work. He experienced low temperatures, ran into a white bear and challenged his spirit and body, pulling his sled (雪撬) up and over rocky ice.Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he’s skied more of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old playmates would not believe the change. Next October, Saunders, 27, will head south from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, a 2900-kilometer journey that has never been completed on skis.51.What made Ben Saunders change when he was fifteen? (no more than 10 words)52.When did Ben Saunders get first place in a long-distance race for the first time? (no more than 5 words)53.What does the underlined part in Paragraph mean? First of all, I’d like to tell you not to be afraid of making mistakes. You can make much progress by making mistakes and correcting them. Secondly, reading and reciting are very important. When you read and recite as much as possible, you know how to make sentences and use English. By the way, reading and reciting can improve your speaking and listening. As for grammar learning, I don’t think it is right to remember only grammar rules. It is a good way to learn grammar by putting it into specific situations. During the speech, I’ll explain the above in detail and answer your questions.Yours,Peter。

While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It‟s the least I could do. Please, I insist.” Jimmy agreed.Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the intervie wer‟s office with disappointed looks on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmy‟s heart sank.“With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” He thought to himself. Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy‟s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the company.“Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into this office. The interviewer was very rude.BSome people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I'm not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don't come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that's just the reality of how life is.However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in additional to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things, it'll require even more time, time that most people won't put in.This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don't enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.Whatever you do , if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you're not willing to put in the time and work, don't expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won't guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.25. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ______.A. the reasons for success.B. the meaning of successC. the standards of success.D. the importance of success26. In Paragraph 2, the underlined word "that" refers to _______.A. being good at something.B. setting a practical goal.C. putting in more time.D. succeeding in life27. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?A. Successful people like to show their great skills.B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life.D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.28. What is the main theme of the passage?A. Having a goal is vital to success.B. Being good is different from being great.C. One cannot succeed without time and practice.D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.C.Interested in sharing your views in the Campus Link? They can affect the ability to listen or think, or to speak, or to read, or to write and do mathematics.A person with a learning disability has unusual difficulty in developing these skills. Researchers believe that learning disabilities are caused by differences in the way that the brain works with information. They say children with learning disabilities are not unintelligent or do not want to work. Their brains just process information differently than other people. Researchers say that one in five people in America has some kinds of learning disability. Almost three million children in America receive some kinds of help in school for a learning disability. How can you tell if someone has a learning disability? Experts look for a difference between how well a child does in school and the level of intelligence or ability of the child. But there is no sign of a disorder. A few signs of a learning disability include not connecting letters with their sounds or not understanding what is read. A person with a learning disability may not be able to understand a funny story. They may not follow directions. They may not read numbers correctly or know how to start a task Different people have different kinds of learning disabilities. Another may have difficulty understanding what people are saying. Still another may not be able to express ideas in writing. These different kinds of learning disabilities are known by different names. For example, a person who has difficulty reading may have dyslexia. Someone who cannot do mathematics may have a disorder called dyscalculia (计算困难).Experts say learning disabilities cannot be cured. But people who have them can be helped. Teachers and parents can help young people with learning disabilities to learn successfully.33. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. Cost of learning disabilities.B. How to cure learning disabilities.C. General introduction to learning disabilities.D. Causes of learning disabilities.34. It is believed that ____ is the main cause of learning disabilities.A. different brainB. mother languageC. being lazyD. the different ways the brain works with information35.
