Nicknames can help establish the identity of a city. They can also spread pride among its citizens. But nicknames sometimes can make fun of something.Cleveland, Ohio is a city in American Midwest. One of its earliest nicknames was Forest City. No one knows for sure who gave it this name in the 1830s. But Cleveland probably had a lot of trees. This nickname became popular among local businesses in the 1840s. Today, some businesses in the Cleveland area still use Forest City in their names.Cleveland sits next to Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes in North America. It was once a major manufacturing city. Ships used the lake for transporting goods. In the 1950s, businesses called Cleveland the Best Location in the Nation. However, many factories closed or moved away. Cleveland had severe financial problems in the 1960s and 70s. In 1969, the city became famous, but not in a good way. Cleveland’s Cuyahoga Ri ver caught on fire because of industrial wastes on the surface of the river. So in the 1970s, the national media began calling the city The Mistake on the Lake.Since then, Cleveland has sought to improve its image. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened in Cleveland in 1995. So the city is proud of its latest nickname, The Rock and Roll Capital of the World.。

She was annoyed at this, so she arrived with a golden apple carved with the word καλλ?στ (kallistēi, "for the fairest"), which she threw among the goddesses. Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena all claimed to be the fairest, and thus the rightful owner of the apple. The goddesses chose to place the matter before Zeus, who, not wanting to favor one of the goddesses, put the choice into the hands of Paris, a Trojan prince. After bathing in the spring of Mount Ida where Troy was situated, the goddesses appeared before Paris for his decision. The goddesses undressed before him to be evaluated, either at his request or by their own choice.Still, Paris could not decide, as all three were ideally beautiful, so they turned to bribes(贿赂). Hera tried to bribe Paris with control over all Asia and Europe, while Athena offered wisdom, fame and glory in battle, but Aphrodite came forth and whispered to Paris that if he were to choose her as the fairest he would have the most beautiful mortal woman in the world as a wife, and he accordingly chose her. This woman was Helen, who was, unfortunately for Paris, already married to King Menelaus of Sparta. The other two goddesses were annoyed by this and through Helen's being taken away by Paris they brought about the Trojan War.Another interpretation is that the apple was being given to the man by the three goddesses, instead of to one of the goddesses. This is the interpretation mythologists and writers trying to find more about ancient Greek myths that date from before the classical period. The later interpretation is considered a different interpretation of icons(偶像) in the distant past, to adapt to the changes in the evolution of the Greek Gods in myths. It is suspected that the icons relate to a religious ritual (宗教仪式) in which a "king" was selected who would serve for a year (or a specified period) before being sacrificed and that the cycle would be renewed upon his death. Robert Graves was a strong supporter of this theory and it is written about in many of his publications(books), such as The Greek Myths and The White Goddess. This also was suggested in the early versions of an extensive analysis of Greek mythology, The Golden Bough by James George Frazer. In a later editions Frazer completely revised the book and left out his research and discussion of these rituals in the shortened edition that is known by that title today. These interpretations relate to a concept of a Great Goddess, a Mother Goddess, and the religious worship of such a goddess in very ancient Greek culture. It took a triad(三合一)form, one phase being Athena along with Hera and Aphrodite and others in her matrilineal(母系的) line (grandmother, mother, etc.) such as (Gaia, Rhea, Hera, Metis), and myths that arose through interpretations (or misinterpretations) of icons from earlier cultural periods. The apple would have been given to the "king" the three goddesses selected.56. Why did Eris throw the golden apple among the goddess?A. She planned to set off the Trojan War.B. She intended to select a fairest goddess.C. Not invited to the wedding, she paid them back.D. She wanted to pose an awkward question to Zeus.57. How did the Trojan War break out according to the first interpretation?A. Helen betrayed Paris and married King Menelaus of Sparta.B. Hera and Athena was an gry about Paris’ choice and brought the war.C. Paris was ambitious to control over all Asia and Europe to win Helen.D. King Menelaus of Sparta made up an excuse to take control of Troy58. How many interpretations about the apple are mentioned in the passage?A. oneB. twoC. threeD. fourBThere are people in Italy who can’t stand soccer. Not all Canadians love hockey. A similar situation exists in America, where there are those individuals you may be one of them who frown when somebody mentions baseball. Baseball to them means boring hours watching grown men in funny tight outfits standing around in a field staring away while very little of anything happens. They tell you it’s a game better suited to the 19th century, slow, quiet, and gentlemanly. These are the same people you may be one of them who love football because there’s the sport that values “the hit”.By contrast, baseball seems abstract, cool, silent, still. On TV the game is divided into a dozen perspectives, replays, close-ups. The geometry(几何学) of the game, however, is essential to understanding it. You will view the game from one point as a painter does his subject; you may, of course, project yourself into the game. It is in this projection that the game aff ords so much space and time for involvement. The TV won’t do it for you.Take, for example, the third baseman. You sit behind the third base and you watch him watching home plate. His legs are apart, knees flexed(弯曲). His arms hang loose. He does a lot of this. The skeptic(怀疑论者) still cannot think of any other sports so still, so passive. But watch what happens every time the pitcher throws: the third baseman goes up on his toes, flexes his arms or brings the glove to a point in front of him, takes a step right or left, backward or forward, perhaps he glances across the field to check his first baseman’s position. Suppose the pitch is a ball. “Nothing happened,” you say. “I could have had my eyes closed.”The skeptic and the innocent must play the game. And this involvement in the stands is no more intellectual than listening to music is. Watch the third baseman. Smooth the dirt in front of you with one foot; smooth the pocket in your glove; watch the eyes of the batter, the speed of the bat, the sound of ball on wood. If football is a symphony of movement and theatre, baseball is chamber music, a spacious interlocking(连锁) of notes, chorus(和声)and responses. 59.The passage is mainly concerned with___________.A. the attraction of baseballB. the superiority of footballC. the different tastes of people for sportsD. the different characteristics of sports60.Those who don’t like baseball may complain that___________.A. it is only to the taste of the oldB. it is not exciting enoughC. it involves fewer players than footballD. it is pretentious and looks funny61.The author admits that ________ .A. baseball may seem boring when watched on TVB. football is more attracting than baseballC. baseball is more interesting than footballD. baseball is too peaceful for the young62.By stating “I could have had my eyes closed”, the author means (4th paragraph last sentence) __________.A. The consequence was so bad that he could not bear to see itB. The third baseman is so good at baseball that he could finish the game with eyes closed allthe time and do his work wellC. Even if the third baseman closed his eyes a moment ago, it could make no difference tothe resultD. The third baseman would rather sleep than play the gameCSpanish explorers called them Las Encantadas, the Enchanted Isles, and Charles Darwin used his studies of the islands as the foundation for his theory of natural selection. The Galapagos are among the world's most important scientific treasures, a group of volcanic islands surrounded by deserted beaches and inhabited by unique varieties of giant tortoise, lizards, and birds.Yet life on this United Nations world heritage site has turned sour. Battles have broken out between fishermen and conservationists. Ecuador, which owns the islands, has sent a naval patrol (海军巡逻队) to put down disturbances. The controversial director of the Galapagos National Park—which controls 97 percent of Galapagos land and the reserve extending to 40 miles offshore—has been fired, while an air of uneasy tension hangs over the islands, as the islanders prepare for election when they pick their representatives in Ecuador’s national assembly.“It’s a very tense situation,” said Leonor Stjepic, director of the London-based Galapagos Conservation Trust, which raises money to help projects on the islands. “We are watching it with concern.”The violence has been triggered by an alarming growth in the islands’ population. Puerto Ayora, on Santa Cruz island, housed just 45 inhabitants in the 50s. Today there are more than 10,000, while the islands' total population is more than 19,000 and growing by 6 percent a year, despite recently introduced a law to limit waves of immigrants fleeing the poor areas of Ecuadorfor a life “in paradise (天堂)”. On top of this, more than 100,000 tourists visit the islands every year.Such numbers have put the islands, special ecology under intense pressure. Conservationists backed by the Ecuador government, have replied by exercising strict controls to protect the islands* iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and giant tortoises. These moves have angered many local people, however. They want to exploit (开发利用) the islands’ waters and catch its protected species of sharks, lobsters and sea cucumbers, which can fetch high prices in Japan and South Korea.Angry fishermen surrounded the Charles Darwin research station on Santa Cruz last February, threatened to kill Lonesome George—the last surviving member of the Pinta Island species of the Galapagos giant tortoise. The situation got improved after the Ecuador government made concessions (让步) by increasing fishing quotas (配额), which angered conservationists. “It is tragic, the short-term gain of a few fishermen versus the long-term survival of the Galapagos,” said John McCosker of the California Academy of Sciences. “They are killing the golden goose.”Then, the Ecuador government appointed Fausto Cepeda as the national park's new director, a post that has become a political football for the mainland government. There have been nine directors in the past 18 months. This appointment was particularly controversial, however. Cepeda was known to have close ties with the fishing industry, and the rangers (管理员),who run the national park and reserve, rebelled.More than 300 staged a sit-in at the park’s headquarters and prevented Cepeda from taking up his post. A battle broke out, and at least two people suffered serious injuries. Eventually, Cepeda—with the fishermen’s help- entered the park. “I am in office, i am in control. And I am trying to lower the tension,” he announced. The Ecuador government took no chances, and sent a patrol boat to maintain the peace. A few days later, Ecuador Environment Minister Fabian Valdivicso met representatives of rangers. After discussions, he told newspapers that he had decided to remove Cepeda from the post. However, as the population continues to rise, the long-term pressures on the islands are serious and will not disappear that easily.“We have to balance its sp ecial environment with the needs of local people. In that sense, it is a microcosm (缩影) for all the other threatened parts of the world. So getting it right here is going to be a very, very important trick to pull off,” said Stjepic.63. What does the unde rlined word “this” in Paragraph 5 refer to?A.A life in paradise.B.The island’s swelling population.C.The law to limit waves of immigrants.D.The tourists’ visiting the islands every year.64. What is the primary contributing factor to the conflict between conservationists and fishermen?A.The exploitation of the islands.B.Cepeda’s close tie with the fishing industry.C.The government's support of Galapagos Conservation Trust.D.The dismissal of the previous director of the Galapagos National Park.65. We can learn from the passage that _______.A.the government is trying to ease the tensionB.conservationists get angry when fishermen are killing a gooseC.politicians from the mainland government play football on the islandsD.the projects of Galapagos Conservation Trust on the islands are profitable66. In Paragraph 13, what does the author mean by “The Ecuador government took no chances”?A.The government did not run risks.B.The government made no compromises.C.The government did not seize opportunities.D.The government shrank from responsibilities.D.Amazingly, US crime figures have been falling for 20 years now. Of course, the big question is, why? And can any lessons be learnt? One reason could be the fall in the demand for the drug crack. During the 1980s, drug-related crimes soared, mostly caused by desperate crack users. However, according to professor Blumstein, co-author of The Crime Drop in America, news of the dangers of crack use caused its decrease and led to a fall in the number of drug-related crimes. Some say that the adoption of a zero-tolerance policy in many cities has helped lead to a fall in crime. In New York City, for example, mayor Rudy Giuliani imposed strict and automatic punishments for all crimes, including minor offences such as graffiti and littering. Many believe this has had a very strong deterrent effect.Another reason could be smarter policing strategies. Anti-theft measures and educating the community about car theft has helped see a drop in crimes in many areas. Also, the use of crime mapping schemes that can discover identify crime peaks in different parts of the city has helped police target hotspots.Another reason could be that more criminals are now behind bars. Sociologist John Conklin (from Tufts University) says a significant factor behind the fall in crime in the 1990s is the simple fact that many criminals are in jail. In his book Why Crime Rages Fell, he says sentencing was merciful in the 1960s and 1970s, when crime rose. But then more prisons were built and more offenders were imprisoned. Some have linked the fall in violent crime to a decline in children’s exposure to lead in petrol. Jessica Wolpaw Reyes says, “Even low to moderate levels of exposure can lead to behavioralproblems, reduced IQ, hyperactivity(多动症) and youth crimes. You can link the decline in lead between 1975 and 1985 to a decline in violent crime 20 years later.”Others say that the drop in crime has something to do with birth rates. According to statistics, birth rates peaked between 1957 and 1961, and the proportion of men in the US in their late teens and early 20s (the so-called “criminal age”) was highest in the late 70s and early 80s. However, as time went on, the proportion of people in this age group decreased.Others claim that videogames have helped. A recent study has suggested that these games are keeping young people off the streets and therefore away from crime. Advocates of this argue that any effects the games may have in encouraging violent behavior is offset by the fact that the games keep potential criminals indoors and in front of the television. Some argue that the widespread use of camera phones makes some criminals think twice before committing a crime and getting filmed doing it. Also, many believe that the mass use of CCTV has also had an effect. Finally, some say that petty theft just isn’t worth it any more. The resale value of second-hand goods such as televisions, cameras or clothes is now so low (or even non-existent) that most people see no point in stealing. So, what do you think?67. By writing this article, the writer intends to tell us _____.A. the amazing fact that US crime figures are going downB. the recent statistics showing that crime rates are falling in the USC. the answers to the question why US crime figures are fallingD. the special policies adopted by the US police that help a drop in crime68. “Why Crime Rates Fell” is mentioned in the article to tell readers that _____.A. drug crack can be extremely dangerousB. crime mapping schemes help the police discover criminalsC. criminals should be strictly sentencedD. children shouldn’t be allowed to contact lead69. The underlined word “deterrent” most probably means _____.A. ambiguousB. frighteningC. encouragingD. contradictory70. Which of the following statements can NOT be concluded from the article?A. The young are more likely to commit crimes than the poor.B. Drug abuse may have something to do with high crime rates.C. The widespread use of cameras is helpful to reducing crime rates.D. The possible effects of games encouraging violence are partly countered.四、任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
