1. Definition of Expository Writing
• Expository essays require that the writer give information, explain the topic or define something. They are best developed by the use of facts and statistical information, cause and effect relationships or examples. • Since they are factual, they are written without emotion and usually in the third person. The use of the pronoun “I” is not usually found in this form of essay.

III. The Meaning of Words
• 1) denotative(外延) A word’s denotation is what it literally means, as defined by the dictionary. 2)connotative(内涵) A word’s connotation is the feeling or idea suggested by it.
e.g.1 p13
Country, nation, state, land (国家) • Country: refers to an area of land and its population and government. • Nation: emphasizes the people of a country. • State: refers to the government or political organization of a country. • Land: less precise but more literary and emotive.
