英美概况 Part One Britain2

The English
Traditionally, an Englishman is thought to be reserved, unemotional, courteous; shy of strangers; suspicious of change and slow to accept new ideas; conscious of his place in the social order; and fervently believing the British are superior to any other race on earth. Actually this stereotype is far from true. The English are as individual as any of other nation. Perhaps even more so because they are descended from so many different peoples.
The Bank of England, founded in 1694, nationalised on 1 March 1946, and gained independence in 1997. It stands in a street called Threadneedle and it is affectionately called “the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street”. It’s the nation’s central bank and it’s run by a governor and a group of directors all appointed by the Crown. The bank prints and issues currency notes and also controls the country’s gold reserves. Standing at the centre of the UK's financial system, the Bank is committed to promoting and maintaining monetary and financial stability as its contribution to a healthy economy.
