Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way—by studying movements of random floating garbage. A scientist with many years' experience,he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds ofathletic shoes washing up on the shores of the northwest coast of the United States. There were so many shoes that people were setting up swap_meets to try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes—about 60,000 in total—fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn't. Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents. The Pacific Northwest is one of the world's best areas for beachcombing(海滩搜寻) because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1,600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study. As the result of his work, Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts, with 500 subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects ranging from potatoes to golf gloves.语篇解读:本文主要介绍了海洋专家Curtis Ebbesmeyer以一种特殊的方式来研究洋流的经过以及他为此付出的努力和取得的成果.1.The underlined phrase s w ap meets in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ________.A.fitting rooms B.trading fairsC.business talks D.group meetings答案:B词义猜测题.根据下文的“...try and match left and right shoes to sell and wear.”可知,人们在努力找出可以配成一双的鞋用来出售和穿,由此推断人们应该是建了一个交易市场,故选B项.2.Ebbesmeyer phoned the shoe company to find out ________.A.what caused the shipping accidentB.when and where the shoes went missingC.whether it was all right to use their shoesD.how much they lost in the shipping accident答案:C细节理解题.根据文章第二段的内容可知,Ebbesmeyer打电话的目的是想知道鞋业公司是否还要那些鞋,所以选项C符合题意.3.How did Ebbesmeyer prove his assumption?A.By collecting information from beachcombers.B.By studying the shoes found by beachcomber.C.By searching the web for ocean currents models.D.By researching ocean currents data in the library.答案:A细节理解题.根据文章第三段的“...a group of serious beachcombers... These three wise men were from three different generations. Socrates was the oldest of the three. He passed his knowledge to his student, Plato, who then passed it on to Aristotle. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were all great philosophers (哲学家). Together, their schools of thought have since become the foundation of Western philosophy.Aristotle was born in 384 B. C. His father, Nicomachus, was a doctor to the king of Macedonia. As the son of a doctor, Aristotle was no stranger to science. Growing up, he learned quite a lot about medicine and biology from his father. Later, after Nicomachus passed away, he was sent to study inPlato's Academy in Athens. Aristotle was about eighteen years old then.Plato's Academy was Europe's first university. It offered courses on various subjects. Shortly after Aristotle began his study there, he devoted himself to learning everything on the curriculum. He soon proved himself an excellent student. Because of his wide range of interests, Aristode never limited his range of education. As a result, he became the leading expert in many fields. Philosophy was simply one of them. Aristotle was in the Academy for nearly 20 years. He first joined as a student and then stayed on as a teacher. By the time that Plato died around 347 B. C.,Aristotle had already built up a very good name for himself. However, he did not get the job as the head of the Academy. That post went to Plato's nephew. Some people believed that Aristotle felt angry at the choice. But there is no proof to that theory. Regardless of what he had truly felt, Aristotle decided to leave Athens. So in 347 B. C.,he quit the Academy and went to work for Hermeias, ruler of Atarneus, in Asia Minor (today's Turkey). Aristotle was not alone in this time. He and another Academy member, Xenocrates, who was also a famous philosopher, founded the Assus Academy. They taught there for several years. During his stay in Atarneus, Aristotle was on very good terms with Hermeias. He even married the man's niece, Pythias. Interestingly, when Aristotle later wrote his famous book, Politics, he said that the ideal ages for marriage was 37 for the husband and 18 for the wife. Given that Aristotle was 37 years old at the time, it is very likely that Pythias was 18.语篇解读:本文介绍了古希腊著名哲学家亚里士多德的生平.6.Which of the following is NOT a philosopher?A.Socrates. B.Xenocrates.C.Plato. Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2018·郑州一中高三入学测试)You might make a disgusted face when you notice that the person waiting in their car at the red light next to you is picking their nose, but admit it, you do it too. And while it might be the natural option when there isn't a box of tissues around, it can be bad for you. The main reasons why people feel the need to pick their nose are to clear it of dried liquid, stop an itch(痒), or just because it feels good. Boogers(鼻屎) form when dried liquid and cilium, the tiny hairs that line the nostrils(鼻孔), trap the dust, dirt, and other things. When boogers build up in your nose, it can be uncomfortable, and sometimes just blowing them into a tissue doesn't do_the_trick.Otolaryngologist Erich P Voigt, MD, told Business Insider that picking your nose can cause injuries and bleeding within your nostrils. That's not terribly damaging, but when the bacteria from your hands get into your body, it can cause a cold and flu. So doctors strongly suggest not picking the nose.If dry winter air is causing the dirty liquid to harden in your nostrils, making you want to pick, consider damping the air at home, or taking a steam shower to soften things up in there.Children, who are most famous for having a finger up their nose, sometimes don't realize how much injury they're causing, and sometimes it can lead to nose bleeding. So, next time you go to pick your nose, think about how many bacteria are on your hands and in your boogers, and maybe reach for a tissue instead. Even if you're alone, and not waiting for the light to turn green, please, use a tissue.语篇导读本文为说明文,主要分析了人们抠鼻子的原因以及抠鼻子所带来的不良后果,并呼吁人们需要时用纸巾而不是用手指抠鼻子。

At normal screen viewing distance you should see the face of Albert Einstein. Take a few steps back from the image and Marilyn Monroe, a Hollywood movie star, should come into view. The classic optieal illusion (视错觉) was created by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. AsapScience reveals the proeess behind the trick. Up close, we're generally able to pick up fine details like Einstein's moustache and wrinkles. But as the distance increases, or if your vision is poor and creates a more blurred image in the first place, your ability to pick up details fades away. In this case, you only see general features, like the shape of mouth, nose and hair, and are left seeing Marilyn Monroe.Marilyn Einstein was ereated by adding a general picture of Marilyn Monroe to a pieture of Albert Einstein drawn in fine lines. Features with high spatial resolutions (空间分辨率) are only visible when viewed close up, and those with low spatial resolutions are only visible at a distance. Thus the single image changes when the viewer moves closer or farther away from the screen. The MIT team, led by Dr. Aude Oliva, has spent over a decade creating hybrid optical illusions. Dr. Oliva's group say these images not only reveal vision problems, but can also highlight bow the brain processes information. In one study, participants were shown mixed images for just 30 milliseconds, and only recognized the parts in low spatial resolution of the image. But when the images were shown for 150 milliseconds, they only recognized the image that was produced in fine details, or in high spatial resolution.Dr. Oliva says this shows that our brains discriminate (区分) between picking out fine details in some situations and broader details in others. The brain'sprocessing of fine details happens slightly later than processing other features, according to the research.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了美国麻省理工学院的科学家利用视错觉制造出神奇的《玛丽莲爱因斯坦》混合画。

Module 4Great Scientists(建议用时40分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解(2018·河南实验中学期中考试)Why do some people flush when they drink alcohol(酒)?This effect is a common reaction to alcohol among East Asians. It affects about 36 percent of Japanese,Chinese and Koreans. For many, even a small amount of alcohol can cause unpleasant effects. Most commonly, their face, neck and sometimes their whole body turn red.People might also feel uncomfortable and sick to their stomach. They might experience a burning sensation, increased heart rate, shortness of breath and headaches. The cause is a genetic difference that they are born with called an ALDH2 deficiency(缺乏).It prevents their bodies from treating alcohol the way other people do.But the effects might be more serious than just a red face.Researchers warn of a link between this condition and an increased risk of cancer of the esophagus(食道)from drinking alcohol. The more alcohol people with this deficiency drink, the greater their risk is.In Japan and South Korea, for example, many people have the deficiency but still drink heavily.Researchers found that these drinkers develop a form of esophageal cancer six to ten times more often than those without the deficiency.Esophageal cancer is one of the deadliest cancers. It can be treated when found early, but once it grows the chances of survival drop sharply. The researchers estimate that at least five hundred forty million people have the deficiency, about eight percent of the world’s population.Philip Brooks is a researcher at the National Institute in the United States. He says it is important to educate people about the link between the alcohol flushing effect and esophageal cancer. He says doctors should ask East Asian patients about their experiences with facial flushing after drinking alcohol. Those with a history of it should be advised to limit their alcohol use. They should also be warned that cigarette smoking works with the alcohol in a way that further increases the risk of esophageal cancer.[语篇解读]一些人喝酒后容易脸红,科研人员指出,这是因为体内缺少ALDH2,如果这些人饮酒过量,会增加患食道癌的风险。

Ⅰ阅读理解(2018·甘肃诊断)The 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics is shared by three scientists, the Royal Academy of Sciences announced in Stockholm on Tuesday. The Nobel Prize in Physics 2016 was divided, with one half awarded to David J. Thouless, the other half to F. Duncan M. Haldane and J. Michael Kosterlitz for “theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter(物质拓扑相变和拓扑相)”、Haldane said he was “very surprised”at the news, adding that he was glad that their discoveries found something previously unnoticed by many, and that they revealed “more possibilities for looking for new materials”. He particularly pointed out that a lot of work was still ongoing. The year’s prize amount is 8 million Swedish krona, and will be split properly between the three winners. The winners are given a sum of money when they receive their prizes, in the form of a document confirming the amount awarded. The amount of prize money depends upon how much money the Nobel Foundation(基金会) can award each year. The purse has increased since the 1980s, when the prize money was 880,000 SEK per prize. In 2009, the monetary award was 10 million SEK. In June 2012, it was lowered to 8 million SEK.If there are two winners of a particular prize, the award money is divided equally between the winners.
