On Friday June 21st,2013,the folks at the annual Sonoma County Fair in California celebrated the 25th anniversary of a rather unusual contest—one that crowns the “World's Ugliest Dog”! And while in most settings a title like this would be considered insulting (无礼的) here,it is liked by both the dog owners who come from all over the world and the visitors that come to cheer the contestants. To mark this special anniversary, this year's fair that was themed “Dog Days of Summer” featured among other things, including an exhibit featuring the contestants and winners from the last 25 years. As for the winner? Unlike last year, when he had flown in all the way from London,England, this year's title winner was Chico,California resident Walle, who beat out 29 other equally “ugly contestants”. The refreshing part was that Walle, who happened to be a last minute entrant(参赛者),is not a nearly hairless,Chinese Crested Chihuahua or a mix of both breeds, which have been dominating the contest for many years now. Instead,he is a mutt mix—part beagle, part basset and part boxer. The four-year-old impressed the judges with his giant head and humped back. As one of them put it,he looked as though he had been photoshopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals. It exactly represents the kind of natural “ugliness” they were looking for!Along with the title, the first time entrant received a cash prize of $1,500 as well as scheduled appearances on NBC's weekend Today on Sunday, the Today Show on Monday and the Jimmy Kimmel Show on Wednesday.Though the competition may seem unbelievable to some people,it is held just for fun and organized by an animal psychiatrist who not only vets the dogs before they enter the competition to ensure they are healthy, but also has a “pet” talk with them to ensure they are also happy. It is also important to remember all the contestants come from homes where they are loved because of their rather unusual looks. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!【解题导语】在6月21日举行的世界上最丑的狗的比赛上,一条三个品种的杂交狗赢得了“世界上最丑的狗”这个头衔。

高三高考英语阅读理解复习试题(2)

高三高考英语阅读理解复习试题(2)13(2014届山东省淄博第五中学高三第一次质检)Several years ago, I had to replace a receptionist for my unit. Before I advertised for the position, I was approached by another manager, and asked if l would consider a transfer from his staff instead of opening a new competition. My natural question was to ask who he wanted me to consider and why.It appeared from his description of this employee, Maria, that she was having a lot of problems performing her duties, and had difficulties with her boss, and did not appear to respond to any attempts he, the manager, had made to settle the issues. Now, after listening to his explanation, I really had severe doubts. What crossed my mind, after this discussion, was that he wanted me to take a problem off his hands.I told him I would think about it and would let him know the next day. As promised, after thinking more about this potential performance issue, I decided that I would agree to speak with Maria privately before I made any decision. And, what I found out during this interview, left me deep in thought. As it turned out, the performance issue appeared to result from working for a boss who never extended a good morning greeting, never gave a word of encouragement, and was constantly changing the work load and routines. The end result was a totally ruined employee who was unconfident, hated to see a new work day start.I decided to accept her transfer to my unit. What started out as a shy, withdrawn and frightened employee turned out to be one of the most productive and loyal employee that I had everworked with. Maria couldn't do enough and was constantly asking for more and for more responsibility. I was more than happy to give her what she needed-praise for work well done, respect as a person, and encouragement for doing well in anything she dealt with.Sometimes, we are guilty of holding others back from accomplishing or doing or developing as they should or could. It may be a wise idea that we all look in the mirror, from time to time, to see what we are really like.37.What can we learn about the writer from the first paragraph?A. He is a manager in the company.B. He doesn't like his receptionist.C. He likes to compete with others.D. He wants to find another position.38.After hearing his colleague's description of Maria, the writer thought that Maria_______.A. attempted to settle the issuesB. was a problem to her bossC. shouldn't stay in the companyD. could get on well with others39.Why did Maria fail to perform well in her previous job?A. Her previous job was not suitable for her.B. She had difficulty responding to her manager.C. Her boss didn't inspire her working enthusiasm.D. Her boss showed no trust in her ability.40.The writer accepted Maria's transfer to unit probably because he thought that________.A. she was a ruined employeeB. she would need his protectionC. she would turn out to be a good employeeD. she was a shy and frightened employee41.The writer probably believes that a good boss should________.A. praise and award his employees a lotB. respect, praise and encourage his employeesC. greet his employees and give them much workD. always give his employees guidance in working【文章大意】作者在文中讲述了自己经历的一件事。

Language is a major problem for the European Union (EU). The agreement or treaty which created the organization that eventually became the EU,the Treaty of Rome, stated that each country' s language must be treated equally. The original six countries had only three languages between them:French, German andDutch/Flemish.However,there are now 15 countries in the EU,with a total of 12 languages.EU documents must be translated into all these languages, and at official meetings the speeches must be translated into all the languages by interpreters. All this translating is very expensive and time consuming(费时的).It is said that nearly half of all employees of the EU are engaged in translating documents and speeches, and nearly half of the EU's administrative(管理方面的)costs are spent on this task.In the near future it is probably that several more countries, most of them having their own languages, will join the EU,thus making the situation even worse. The problem is not just cost:there are practical difficulties as well. With 12 languages, there are 132 possible “translation situations” that might be needed. It is often difficult to find people in the right place at the right time who can translate from (for example) Danish into Greek,or Dutch into Portuguese,at a high professional standard. In practice the problem has been made less severe by the use of English in many contacts between EU officials, since almost all of them speak some English. However, any move to reduce the number of official languages(perhaps to four or five)would be a blow to the price of the smaller countries.Another commonly suggested solution is to make English the official language for all EU business. However, this is strongly resisted by powerful member countries like France and Germany.1.What's the main purpose of this passage?A. To give a solution to a problem.B.To find out a problem and show how severe it is.C.To criticize the European Union for ill efficiency.D.To show that the problem cannot be solved.答案:B 推理判断题。

入舵市安恙阳光实验学校浙江松2017高考英语一轮阅读理解(九月)训练题(二)【2016高考训练】Egypt may be walking towards a much-needed IMF loan, but that hasn’t put off some foreign partners. GB Auto, the Cairo-listed auto assembler(汽车组装公司), will begin putting together and selling cars from China’s Geely in the second quarter of 2012.GB will assemble the cars from kits(配件) supplied by Geely (the Hangzhou-based carmaker that bought Volvo in a $1.5bn deal in 2010), and will sell the finished product in markets across North Africa, beginning with Egypt. The deal is “one of several partnerships we will announce this year,” said GB’s chairman, Raouf Ghabbour, in a statement.GB controls 32 per cent of the Egyptian selling car market, where it rose to success as the largest local assembler, importer and seller of cars from South Korea’s Hyundai. It is now the the Middle East’s largest car assembler. High tax on fully-assembled imported cars have encouraged a number of international auto brands, including BMW and China’s Geely, to have their vehicles put together in Egypt. For Geely, the Egyptian deal is another step in efforts to push its products out across the world, after announcing last year that it would set up a production hub(轮轴)in Indonesia to target the fast-growing Southeast Asian market. The company plans on selling at least one model in the UK by the end of 2012.While 2011 was a tough year for car sales (and pretty much everything else) in Egypt, the vehicle market is still a good prospect as a large and increasingly young population fuel long-term economic growth. GB says there are about 30 cars per 1,000 people in Egypt, compared to 128 in China and 109 in Morocco.GB says the tuk-tuk’s popularity in Egypt’s rural inland and informal urban slums(贫民窟)made it less influenced by a slowdown in the passenger car industry. And if long-discussed reforms of Egypt lead to higher fuel prices, expect tuk-tuks, powered by something barely larger than a lawnmower (割草机)engine, to become increasingly attractive for urban transport.1.What is the general idea of the pasasage?A. China’s Geely is entering Egypt.B. For Geely, the Egyptian deal is another step.C. GB covers much of Egyptian car selling.D. GB will assemble the cars from kits.2.Which country’s seller of cars is GB?A. China.B. Korea.C. Japan.D. Egypt3. Why do China’s Geely put their kits of cars together in a foreign country?A.A number of international auto brands.B. Several partners’ help.C. Egypt ‘s need of IMF loan.D. Too much tax.4.The re ason why they mention the figure about China and Morocco’s cars is______.A. To learn from them easily.B. To show China and Morocco’s strength.C. To show GB has a good future.D. To beat China and Morocco in selling.5. The tuk-tuk’s ad vantage is______.A. That its kits came from China.B. That its engine is smaller than others.C. GB assemble them carefully.D. It is sold in Egypt’s rural inland.本文大意是中国吉利汽车正走向埃及市场。

Every corner is a wood and stone masterpiece, with high glass windows that look out to the huge cliffs of the valley.A man entered with his family and took a seat. He wasn't in uniform, but he walked with the dignity of a soldier, and a slight limp (跛行). My suspicion was confirmed when he removed his hat and placed it on the table where I could see it. He was content to be left out of the conversation and allowed to take in the wonderful and impressive view of the waterfall.I watched him, and imagined how many horrors he had seen in the war. What losses did he suffer, and how many friends did he lose? What he had witnessed should have given him a good reason to lose faith in the world. Yet this tired soldier was smiling at the sky, at the sun and the roar of the waterfall. Somehow, after everything, the world was still beautiful to him.I walked over to him and said, “Excuse me, sir. I'm sorry to interrupt, but I saw your hat, and I just wanted to say thank you for serving.”He looked up at me, surp rised, and said proudly, “You're wele, and thank you, too.”I told him I would go home and tell my children about this experience that I'd met him.1.What can we know about the place where the author enjoyed lunch?A.It was only open to people of the upper class.B.It was once visited by many famous people.C.It was attractive because of its beautiful surroundings.D.It was modeled on scenes from American history.2.What can we learn from the passage?A.The author at first thought the gentleman was famous.B.The gentleman stood out because of his uniform.C.The gentleman's family didn't like to talk with him.D.The gentleman wasn't expecting the author to thank him.3.What encouraged the author to talk to the soldier?A.The soldier's disability.B.The soldier's loneliness.C.The soldier's contribution to his country.D.The soldier's bravery to fight in the war.4.What is the author's attitude toward the soldier?A.Admiring. However, data of the first six months showed it would make less than half this amount. At present it is expected to generate £240m for the year ending in April 2019, which will go to school sports. It es after more than half of soft drinks sold in shops have had their sugar levels cut by manufacturers (制造商) so they can avoid paying the tax. Drinks now contain 45 million fewer kilos of sugar as a result of manufacturers' efforts to avoid the charge, according to Treasury figures. If you smoke and you still don’t believe that there’s a definite link between smoking and bronchial troubles, heart disease and lung cancer, then you are certainly deceiving yourself. No one will accuse you of hypocrisy. Let us just say that you are suffering from a bad case of wishful thinking. This needn’t make you too uncomfortable because you are in good company. Whenever the subject of smoking and health is raised, the governments of most countries hear no evil, see no evil and smell no evil. Admittedly, a few governments have taken timid measures. In Britain for instance, cigarette advertising has been banned on television. The conscience of the nation is appeased, while the population continues to puff its way to smoky, cancerous death. You don’t have to look very far to find out why the official reactions to medical findings have been so lukewarm. The answer is simply money. Tobacco is a wonderful commodity to tax. It’s almost like a tax on our daily bread. In tax revenue alone, the government of Britain collects enough from smokers to pay for its entire educational facilities. So while the authorities point out ever so discreetly that sm oking may, conceivable, be harmful, it doesn’t do to shout too loudly about it.This is surely the most short-sighted policy you could imagine. While money is eagerly collected in vast sums with one hand, it is paid out in increasingly vaster sums with the other. Enormous amounts are spent on cancer research and on efforts to cure people suffering from the disease. Countless valuable lives are lost. In the long run, there is no doubt that everybody would be much better-off if smoking were banned altogether.Of course, we are not ready for such a drastic action. But if the governments of the world were honestly concerned about the welfare of their peoples, you’d think they’d conduct aggressive anti-smoking campaigns. Far from it! The tobacco industry is allowed to spend staggering sums on advertising. Its advertising is as insidious as it is dishonest. We are never shown pictures of real smokers coughing up their lungs early in the morning. That would never do. The advertisement always depict virile, clean-shaven young men. They suggest it is manly to smoke, even positively healthy! Smoking is associated with the great open-air life, with beautiful girls, true love and togetherness. What utter nonsense! For a start, governments could begin by banning all cigarette and tobacco advertising and should then conduct anti-smoking advertising campaigns of their own. Smoking should be banned in all public places like theatres, cinemas and restaurants. Great efforts should be made to inform young people especially of the dire consequences of taking up the habit.
