Shopping

Main topic: shopping

Some useful questions:

Do you prefer to shop in department stores, supermarkets, or in small shops? 1. I often pop into the grocer’s near my school to get some coffee, sugar, soap, gum, etc. it’s only about 5 minute’s walk from my dorm and is quite convenient for me.. 2. I seldom go shopping alone. My parents and I often go to a down town shopping center on Sundays. It is spacious, modern, and comfortable, and I like the atmosphere there. It is about a 20 minute s’ bus ride from where we live.

3. As a day student, I often shop at a supermarket on my way home. It has almost everything that I want.

If you have bought something you don’t like or that doesn’t work, what will you do?

1. I will complaint to the shop where I’ve bought the product. I will request to see the manager to settle my problem.

2. Maybe I will tolerant the product because I hate to make a complaint. I’m just too shy.

3. of course, I will take the product back to the shop. I will demand a refund (退款)。Do you always look for the lowest price when you shop? Why?

1. I like bargains very much because I don’t have much money. I want to save every penny at college. A penny saved is a penny earned, you know.

2. I don’t like bargains because most bargains are of poor quality. “The cheap are not good”, as the Chinese saying goes.

3. I like bargains that can serve my immediate needs(满足眼前需要); however, I will pick and choose when I shop.

Tell something about the shops and stores in your hometown.

1. I know almost all the major shops and stores in my hometown. There are department stores, specialty shops, shopping malls, supermarkets, discount stores, thrift shops, and so on.

2. I don’t often shop. But I know there are one Wal-mart(商业中心, 市场) store and five Carrefour (十字路口, 集市场所, 广场) stores in my hometown. I sometimes go shopping there, about once a month.

3. I know quite a few (相当多, 不少) shops and stores in my hometown, especially the only shopping mall there. I used to shop in that mall.

Do you prefer on-line shopping or in-store shopping? Why?

1. I like on-line shopping because it is efficient. It takes me little time, and yet I can buy nearly all the things I like. In-store shopping usually cost me more time.

2. I like in-store shopping because it is personal, and I can have a good talk with the salespeople and make friends with more people. On-line shopping is just too mechanical and impersonal(没有感情的).

3. I like online shopping because the online stores often sell truly cheap goods and no bargaining is needed. Besides, the delivery is often efficient. In-store shopping usually costs me a lot of time to hunt for bargains, and I have to carry all the purchases home on my own.

Talk about your own shopping habits.

When talking about your shopping habits, you may include:

1) when and where you often go shopping,

2) what you often shop for,

3) how you shop (e.g. Do you make a comparisons at different stores?)

4) how you usually pay four your shopping.

For reference:

I don’t go shopping very often, because I’m busy with my school work. If I want to buy something like books, flowers, or computer products, I do my shopping online. Shopping online is interesting, convenient and economical. On the weekends, I occasionally go shopping at a shopping mall. I’m usually not in the mood to compare the prices at different stores. I usually pay for my purchases by cash/ by credit card.

A model:

Malls in the U.S.A.

Malls are popular places for Americans to go. People like malls for many reasons. They feel safe because malls have private security guards and sometimes even police stations. Parking is usually free, and the weather inside is always fine. The newest malls have beautiful rest areas with waterfalls and large green trees. The first indoor mall in the United States was built in 1965 in Minnesota, but now malls are like town centers where people come to do many things. They shop, eat foods from all over the world, and see movies at theatres. Some people even get their daily exercise from the new sport of “mall walking”. Others go to malls to meet friends. In some malls, people can see a doctor or a dentist and even attend church. In a word, people can do just about (差不多, 几乎) everything in malls.

Online shopping

W: Hey, Don, online shopping is so popular nowadays. Where is a good place to buy

electronics (电子器件) online?

M: Hmmm. I usually go to https://www.360docs.net/doc/a28218465.html,. Sometimes I use eBay.

W: Really, I’ve never used either of those. What are they all about?

M: Well, eBay is an auction site. People put their staff up for sale, and then other people log in(登陆) and if they are interested in one item, they bid (出价, 投标) for it. If you want to bid, you put in the amount that is the most you’re willing to pay. Then , by a certain deadline, the highest bid (出价) gets the item.

W: Interesting. Then, if your bid is highest, how do you pay?

M: Well, you can usually send a check or money order. (汇票, 汇款单) Or you can use a system called PayPal (好朋友) which lets you pay by credit card online.

W: How do you get your staff?

M: Well, after the auction, eBay puts you directly in touch with the seller, and then you arrange fro them to send it to you. You can check it out at https://www.360docs.net/doc/a28218465.html,.

W: I sure will. And how about that Amazon place you said?

M: https://www.360docs.net/doc/a28218465.html, is like an actual store, just online. They sell just about everything, either new or used items. I find the prices are usually a good deal cheaper than in a store.

W: That’s what I’ve heard. I think that buying some things online, like books, or DVDs, is a really good idea, but I could never buy clothes online.

M: I know what you mean. Things that you need to see, touch and feel first, before you buy, are hard to buy online. But then again, there are lots of people who buy everything online.

W: Do you think it’s safe? I mean, I’ve heard that people can steal your card number over the Internet.

M: Well, I think that it does happen, but it’s very rare. All in all, it’s pretty safe.

W: And what if you want to return something?

M: I think that’s probably easier if you bought it in a real store. But these online stores and sellers often have very good return policies. You just need to package it all back up again.

W: A pain in the neck (讨厌的任务/家伙)if you ask me.

Beware (小心, 谨防) of bargains!(特价商品)

Ever since ancient times, people have always loved a bargain. If they think they are getting a “good deal”they will grab it up, whatever it is. Some people buy clothes they will never wear, or furniture they have no need or room for. Some even buy cars they can’t afford simply because the auto dealer is having a sale. There is an old saying, “You get what you pay for.”(一分价钱一分货)And another saying: “If a price seems too good to be true, it probably is.”Some stores offer “unbelievable bargain prices” on unit costs, then add on hidden charges so that the final price is the

same as the regular price—or sometimes even higher.

Does complaining work?

Many people tolerate bad service or inferior products rather than make a complaint. They feel that complaining won’t do any good. In fact, they’re wrong: complaining works because companies don’t want dissatisfied customs. If you have a complaint, do something about it right away. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get your complaint settled. First, you can complain to one of the clerks. If they cannot help you, then ask politely to see a manager. Also, many stores have Customer Service representatives whose job is to solve problems in customer relations. These people are eager to assist because companies realize that dissatisfied customers can damage their reputation. You should always insist on your own rights as a customer. You have the right to receive a product you ordered in a timely(及时的) manner and in good condition.

2. Cash back?

How are you going to pay? 4. Double coupon.

Topics for Oral test 1. Which great leader do you admire most? What qualities did/does he/she have? bill gates 2. Which do you cherish more, your friendship with a good friend or your romantic relationship? obviously, friend is easy to make, but lover is kind of hard to seek for. Since relationship between friends might be not that close compared to romantic relationship, I will probably take it serious and cherish this sweet relationship. Also, I believe that my friends will support me and our relationship won’t be tense and freezing because of this. As the Chinese saying goes, once you got a boyfriend or a girlfriend, you may leave your friends out of your mind. I partly agree this, and when I fall in love, especially at the very beginning, I think I will cherish it more than friendship. 3. What factors would you consider first if you were to find a job (even a part-time job)? I will first consider whether this company and the offered position is high potential. I think high potential is a quality that is vital for the company’s future development and its personnel’s self improvement. Every one need a room to promote and realize one’s self-value. Another factor I concern is—its location. I’d like to work and live in big cities because big cities offer so many opportunities and a higher salary while small cities can’t. 4. Whom do you usually turn to when in trouble, vour parents or your friends? They know me better than anyone else and their vision is wide, their thoughts are mature.

1. hey, don't try to rip me off. i know what this is worth. 如:“ the shop tried to rip me off, but i taught them a good lesson. ”(那个商店企图宰我,结果让我教训了一顿)。 如果真的被狠宰了一下,你当然还能够说,“ i was ripped off .”或者“ i was cleaned out”。 2. can you give me a little deal on this? 这能卖得便宜一点吗? can you give me this for cheaper? 3. is there any discount on bulk purchases?

give me a discount. “bulk purchases”就是“大量地购买”,等于“buy something in bulk”。 “ discount ”是折扣的意思。平时在商店里常出现的表示打折的牌子是“ on sale ”。 专门卖廉价物品的商店叫“ bargain store ”,店里卖廉价商品的柜台能够叫做“ bargain counter ”。

大学英语口语 online shopping

A:As a new shopping way, online shopping is not only convenient but also helpful for people. Why do I think so? On the one hand, online shopping doesn’t need you to pour a lot of time and energy into buying things. If you go shopping in this way, you will spend a few minutes in choosing the things that you need online instead of going out. Nowadays, we are busy studying as well as working, so that we have less time to go out for shopping. Moreover, online shopping doesn’t need us to get the things in person. On the other hand, online stores can provide various goods to satisfy our endless need. Besides, we can save much money by online shopping. B:Undoubtedly, online shopping has brought us many conveniences. Yet its potential dangers to us could not be ignored. One possible risk is that we might not get the exact product we want because the information provided might not be enough or reliable. For a simple example, a student who wants to buy a pair of shoes might end up getting a pair with desired style but unfit sizes. After all, we have to try ourselves when buying clothes or shoes. Moreover, if we do not pay attention to the credibility of online stores, we might get cheated. Besides, some shops on the Internet are dishonest and they would not deliver the goods after paying. And if this situation happens, the consumers would find nowhere to complain and never pull out the money any longer. Personal information leakage is another danger. Whenever users purchase a product, they are required to put in their personal information including name, address, telephone number, payment passwords and so on. If the website is not secure, customers’ information can be accessible to anyone who knows how to obtain it. C:I am agreeing with ‘A’ point, For example, shopping on the internet can save students a great deal of time on the way between home and store,so they would be able to concentrate more time and energy on their academic work. Instead of going one shop to another, people can choose and buy all kinds of commodities they like as long as they click the mouse gently. This is not only a better choice for the old who do not have enough energy to go outside but also a great convenience for those who have no time to go shopping in person. In addition, consumers have more choices and can do some comparison when they are shopping on the Internet. They can glance over various commodities in all shapes, sizes and colors and decided to buy or not. And you need n’t take cash with you, as for me, I don’t like take cash very much. Furthermore, online shopping has made a great contribution to the development of express delivery industry. D:You say that online shopping can save time; now let us calculate the time for you. Since we decide buy a commodity, we have to squat in front of a computer comparing a shop to another, because different shops have different prices and reputations, and we don’t want to be cheated. This process will cost a lot of time unavoidably. After we have selected one shop, we then have to consult about the item number and bargain with the manager. More seriously, we have to wait for some time lag which is uncertain before the goods arrive. When we wait for the goods, we have to pay attention to the phone from the delivery courier com panies, if we don’t want to miss it. Thus we also have to bear some psychological costs. It also costs time invisibly that we reject the goods which are not satisfying. The quality of goods is uneven, select the satisfying goods what you need waste a lot of time. Thanks to the convenience of online shopping, more and more people are unwilling to go outside, and it is not good for the development of our society.
