Passage 1Like most people,1 was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting It was not until in my late thirties that 1 made this important discovery:giving-away makes life so much more exciting You need not worry if you lack money This is how 1 experimented with giving-away.If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me,I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in all unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my Office.1 wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation More than a year later I needed a post—office box for a new business 1 was starting 1 was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list.As 1 was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard(无意中听到)our conversation.“Wasn’t it you that wrote US that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?”I said yes“Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you.You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.’’1.From the passage,we understand that ______A the author did not understand the importance of giving until he was in late thirtiesB.the author was like most people who were mostly receivers rather than giversC.the author received the same education as most people during his childhoodD.the author liked most people as they looked upon life as a process of getting 2.According to the author _____A giving means you will lack moneyB the excitement of giving can bring you moneyC you don’t have to be rich in order to give D.when you give away money, you will be rich3.The author would make the suggestion to the storekeeper ___A.in writing B.in person C in the window display D.about the neighborhood 4.When the author needed a post-office box,______A.he had to put his name on a waiting list B he wrote the postmaster a note of appreciationC.many people had applied for post-office boxes before him D.he asked the postmaster to make one for him5.In reply to the postmaster’s question.the author said ______A.it was the special delivery B.it was the post-office boxC.it was the note of appreciation he wrote D it was he who wrote him a letter a year agoPassage 2Children in the United States are exposed to many influences other than that of their families.Television is the most significant of these influences, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children start attending school.Parents are concerned about the lack of quality in television programs for children. The degree of violence in many of these shows also worries them.Studies indicate that, when children are exposed to violence, they many become aggressive or insecure.Parents are also concerned at,out the commercials that their children see on television. Many parents would like to see fewer commercials during programs for children. And some parents feel that these shows should not have any commercials at all because young minds are not mature enough to deal with the claims made by advertisers.Educational television has no commercials and has programs for children that many parents approve of The most famous of these is Sesame Street, which tries to give preschool children a head start in learning the alphabet(字母)and numbers. It also flies to teach children useful things about the world in which they live.Even though most parents and educators give Sesame Street and shows like it high marks for quality, some critics argue that all television, whether educational or not,is harmful to children. These critics feel that the habit of watching hours of television every day turns children into bored and passive(被动的)consumers of their world rather than encouraging them to become active explorers of it.6.Which of the following statements is NOT based on the passage?A.Parents are worried about the influence from television on their children B Television has much influence on childrenC Both parents and their children like watching educational television.D.Some critics think that television is no good for children.7.In what ways do children suffer from television?A.They become the victims of social violence B They spend hours watching television instead of doing school workC The programs make the children lose interest in the world.D The programs make the children spend too much of their parents’ money8.Parents would not like their children to see commercials because ____A.they think that their children ore not old enough to handle advertising B.commercials teach children alphabet and numbersC.commercials help to sell products D.they don’t like commercials 9.Educational television is widely appreciated becauseA.it does have the same commercials as others B.it offers programs for both children and their parentsC many parents like the programs it offers for their children D.children can learn some school subjects before they go to school10.Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?A.Watching Too Much Television May Be Harmful to Young Minds B.Television Is More Harmful than EducationalC.Television’s Influence on Children D More Education TelevisionPassage 3We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people.“Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?…‘When I got that great job,did Jerry really feel good about it,as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?”When we look back.doubts like these can make US feel bad.But when we look back. It’s too late Why do we go wrong about our friends-or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen,we miss the feeling behind the words.Suppose someone tells you.‘‘you’re a lucky dog”.Is he really on your side? if he says.“You’re a luckyguy”or“You’re a lucky gal”.That’s being friendly. But“lucky dog”?There’s a bit of envy in those words Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the‘‘dog”bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking.Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says square with the tone of voice? His posture(体态)?The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake11.From the questions in the first paragraph we can learn that the speaker _____A.feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends were to himB.feels he may not have“read” his friends’true feelings correctlyC.thinks it was a mistake to have broken up with his girl friend,HelenD is sorry that his friends let him down12.In the second paragraph.the author uses the example of“You’re a lucky dog”to show that .A.the speaker of this sentence is just being friendlyB this saying means the same as “You’re a lucky guy” or “You’re a lucky gal”C sometimes the words used by a speaker give a clue to the feeling behind the wordsD.the word“dog”shouldn’t be used to apply to people13.This passage tries to tell you how to ______A.avoid mistakes about money and friends B.bring the“dog’’bit into our conversation C.avoid mistakes in understanding what people tell you D keep people friendly without trusting them14.In listening to a person.the important thing is ______A.to notice his tone, his posture, and the look in his eyes B to listen to how he pronounces his wordsC.to check his words against his manner, his tone of voice, and his posture D.not to believe what he says15.If you followed the advice of the writer, you would ______A be able to get the real meaning of what people say to you B.avoid any mistakes while talking with people who envy youC.not lose real friends who say things that do not please you D.be able to observe people as they are talking to youPassage 4Why was Bastille important to the citizens of Paris? The building of the Bastille had been started in 1370 under Charles V By the seventeenth century it had stopped to be important for defense.Cardinal Richelieu turned it into a prison. It was not an ordinary prison to punish common crimes. Its huge doors closed only on enemies of the King The Bastille’s workings were secret.Prisoners were taken to it in closed vehicles.Soldiers on guard duty had to stand with their faces to the wall NO talking was allowed Worst of all,a prisoner never knew if he would be there a day,a week,a year,or forever.Only the King’s letter could set him freeOver the years the number of arrests by King’S letter had become fewer.By the time of its fall.most of the prisoners were writers who had written against the corruptions(贪污腐败)of the government Voltaire, the famous French writer, spent a year there in 1717~1718,and another 12 days in 1726.For those who believed in free speech and free thinking, the Bastille stood for everything evil. The day it was why do people read newspapers?Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings--battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown(推翻)or killed--took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate.Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the same day they happen.Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories, and of course.advertisements.The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space, but it is worth the money for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country For those who produce newspapers, advertisements are also very important.Money earned from advertisements makes it possible feel”.Usually the question is asked of a man in action—a man on the go.walking along the street.or busily working at his desk So what d0 you expect him to say?He’11 probably say.“Fine.I’m all right.”But “you’ve put a bug in his ear”一maybe now he’s not sure If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face,or his walk.that he did not realize that morning It starts him worrying a little.First thing you know.he looks in a mirror to see if everything is aⅡfight, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else.‘‘How do you feel?”Every question has its time and place It’s perfectly acceptable, for instance,to ask ‘‘How do you feel?’’if you’re visiting a close f riend in the hospital But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to make a train,or sitting at his desk working,it’s no time to ask him that silly question. When George Bernard Shaw, the famous writer of plays was in his eighties, someone asked him“How do you feel”,Shaw put him in his place.“When you reach my age”,he said.“either you feel all right or you’re dead”26.According to the writer, greetings, such as“How do you feel?” ___A.show one’s consideration for others B.are a good way You’ve put a bug in his ear’’means that you’veA.made him laugh B.shown concern for him C made fun of him D.givenhim some kind of warningPassage 7Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is“Don’t!”.But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama sch001.Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company(剧团),usually as an assistant stage manager This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre and occasionally acting in very small parts It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny.Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and Success without this long and hard training.Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory.A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop,as he drove past in his car.He stopped and got out to speak to the girl.He asked if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking Then she got angry and said she would call the police It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious The test was successful. And within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day But chances like this happen once in a blue moon31 From the very beginning, the author puts it clearly that acting is a profession _____A sought after by too many B.too difficult for young peopleC.for slim people only D.one can go into without special training32.For someone who feels he must act,it is very likely that _____A.he will become a film star at long last B he will become a stage managerC he will be well paid D.he will end up without any Success 33.The film producer found Connie Pratt one morning when she was ____A.at work in a bicycle factory B.driving past him in her carC.going to a film studio D.waiting for a bus34.A few weeks after the test.Connie Pratt found herself ______A the most famous actress of the world B.playing the leading female role in a play C.as famous as the greatest actor of the world D.no less famous than the leading actor of the day35. The concluding sentence “chances like this happen once in a blue moon” meansA this is something which happens once in a while B.this is a highly profitable chance C.this is something highly possible D this is a very rare chancePassage 8Soldiers and other military people wear uniforms with various other symbols to indicate their status. But in the business world everyone wears more or less similar suits, and you cannot tell at a glance who ranks higher or lower than another. So how do people in the business world show their superiority? An attempt to study this was made by two researchers using a series of silent films. They had two actors play the parts of an executive(经理)and a visitor, and switch roles each time. The scene had one man at his desk playing the part of an executive, while the other, playing the part of a visitor, knocks at the door, opens it and approaches the desk to discuss some business matter. The audience watching the films was asked to rate the executive and the visitor in terms ofstatus.A certain set of rules about status began to emerge from the ratings. The visitor showed the least amount of status when he stopped just inside the door to talk across the room to the seated man.He was considered to have more status when he walked halfway up to the desk, and he had the most status when he walked directly up to the desk and stood right in front Of the seated executive.Another thing that affected the status of the visitor in the eyes of the observers was the time between knocking and entering. For the seated executive, his status was also affected by the time between hearing the knock and answering. The quicker the visitor entered the room, the more status he had.The longer the executive took to answer, the more status he had.36.The experiment designed by the two researchers aimed at finding out _____A.how business is conducted by all executive and a visitor B how to tell the differences between an executive and a visitorC.how to tell businessmen at a glance D.how businessmen indicate status37 Which of the statements can best sum up the passage?A.The executive has a higher status than the visitor.B.Military people wear uniforms but the businessmen do notC,A study revealing a set of rules about the status of businessmen.D It is a good method to use a series of silent film in research.38 Having entered the room, the closer the visitor approaches the executive, ___A.the less it affected his status B.the lower his status C.the more it affected his status D.the higher his status39.The longer the seated man was in answering the knock,______A.the higher his status B.the less it affected his status C.the lower his status D the more it affected his status40.Which statement is NOT true?A Soldiers wear uniforms with various symbols so that one call tell their status at a glance.B.In the experiment.one actor played the executive while the other played the seated man C.Business people wear similar suits.D The audience watching the film rated the executive and the visitor in terms of status.1. It is believed that today's children and teenagers are consuming three times the remended level of sugar, putting them at a higher risk of the disease.Initially the sugar tax was expected to make £520m a year for the Treasury. However, data of the first six months showed it would make less than half this amount. At present it is expected to generate £240m for the year ending in April 2019, which will go to school sports. It es after more than half of soft drinks sold in shops have had their sugar levels cut by manufacturers〔制造商〕so they can avoid paying the tax. Drinks now contain 45 million fewer kilos of sugar as a result of manufacturers' efforts to avoid the charge, according to Treasury figures. Since April drinks panies have been forced to pay between 18p and 24p for every litre of sugary drink they produce or import, depending on the sugar content. However, some high sugar brands, like Classic Coca Cola, have accepted the sugar tax and are refusing to change for fear of upsetting consumers. Fruit juices, milkbased drinks and most alcoholic drinks are free of the tax, as are small panies manufacturing fewer than 1m litres per year.Today's figures, according to one government official, show the positive influence the sugar tax is having by raising millions of pounds for sports facilities〔设施〕and healthier eating in schools.Helping the next generation to have a healthy and active childhood is of great importance, and the industry is playing its part.32. Why was the sugar tax introduced?A. To collect money for schools.B. To improve the quality of drinks.C. To protect children's health.D. To encourage research in education.33. How did some drinks panies respond to the sugar tax?A. They turned to overseas markets.B. They raised the prices of their products.C. They cut down on their production.D. They reduced their products' sugar content.34. From which of the following is the sugar tax collected?A. Most alcoholic drinks.B. Milkbased drinks.C. Fruit juices.D. Classic Coke.35. What can be inferred about the adoption of the sugar tax policy?A. It is a shortsighted decision.B. It is a success story.C. It benefits manufacturers.D. It upsets customers.其次节:精深语篇一、高频核心词汇1.________________/prɪˈdɪkt/ v.预言,估计2.________________ /əˈnaʊns/ v. 宣布,公布3.________________/kənˈteɪn/v. 包含,容纳4.________________/ˌɪntrəˈdjuːs/v.介绍,引见5.________________/rɪˈdjuːs/v.削减,降低6.________________ /kənˈsjuːm/ v.消耗,消费7.________________ /ˌrekəˈmend/ v.建议,劝说;推举,介绍8.________________ /əˈmaʊnt/ n.数量,量9.________________ /ɪkˈspekt/ v.期盼;估计10.________________ /əˈvɔɪd/v. 防止,防止;回避11.________________ /fɔːs/ n. 武力;力,力气12.________________ /ˈfɪɡə(r)/ n.数字13.________________ /prəˈdjuːs/ v.引起,造成14.________________ /ˈɪmpɔːt/ n. 进口,进口商品15.________________ /brænd/ n. 品牌,商标16.________________ /əkˈsept/ v. 接受,收受17.________________ /rɪˈfjuːz; ˈrefjuːs/v.拒绝,回绝18.________________ /ˌʌpˈset/ v. 使心烦意乱,使生气19.________________ /kənˈsjuːmə(r)/ n. 消费者,顾客20.________________ /reɪz/ v.提升,举起21.________________ /ˌdʒenəˈreɪʃn/ n.一代〔人〕;一代人的时间22.________________ /ˈhelθi/ adj. 健康的,健壮的23.________________ /ˈæktɪv/ adj. 好动的;乐观主动的24.________________/ˈpɒzətɪv/adj. 良好的;有助益的;正面的25.________________ /ˈkwɒləti/ n. 质量,品质26.________________ /ɪnˈkʌrɪdʒ/ v.鼓舞,鼓舞;煽动27.________________ /rɪˈsɜːtʃ; ˈriːsɜːtʃ/ n. 讨论,探讨28.________________ /prəˈdʌkʃn/ n. 生产,制造29.________________ /dɪˈsɪʒ(ə)n/ n.打算,选择30.________________ /ˈbenɪfɪt/ v.对〔某人〕有用,使受益31.________________ /əʊˈbiːsəti/ n. 过度肥胖,肥胖症32.________________ /ˈmɪnɪstə(r)/ n. 部长,大臣33.________________/ˈtreʒəri/ n.34.________________ /ˌmænjuˈfæktʃərə(r)/ n. 生产者;制造者;生产商35.________________ /fəˈsɪləti/ 设施;设备二、词性转换1..________________/ɪˈnɪʃəli/ a dv. 开头,最初→________________ /ɪˈnɪʃl/ adj.开头的,最初的________________ 牛奶为主的2.________________ /ˈʃʊɡəri/ adj.含糖的;甜的→________________/ˈʃʊɡə(r)/ n. ________________原文:The Government's sugar tax on soft drinks has brought in half as much money as Ministers first predicted it would generate, the first official data on the policy has shown.译文:______________________________________________________________________分析:在本句中意为“nonalcoholic (不含酒精的)〞。

2023名校版高考英语阅读理解精读附答案(2022潍坊高三期中卷)Though researchers have long known that adults build unconscious (无意识的) preferences over a lifetime of making choices between things that are essentially the same, the new finding that even babies engage in this phenomenon demonstrates that this way of justifying choice is intuitive (凭直觉的) and somehow fundamental to the human experience.“The act of making a choice changes how we feel about our options,”said Alex Silver, a Johns Hopkins researcher. “Even infants who are really just at the start of making choices for themselves have this preference.”The findings are published today in the journal Psychological Science. People assume they choose things that they like. But research suggests that’s sometimes backwards: we like things because we choose them. And, we dislike things that we don’t choose. “Adults make these inferences unconsciously,”said co-author Lisa Feigenson, a Johns Hopkins scientist in child development. “We justify our choice after the fact.”This makes sense for adults in a consumer culture who must make random choices every day, between everything from toothpaste brands to styles of jeans. The question was when exactly people start doing this. So they turned tobabies, who don’t get many choices so, as Feigenson puts it, are “a perfect window into the origin of this tendency.”The team brought 10-to 20-month-old babies into the lab and gave them a choice of objects to play with;two equally bright and colorful soft blocks. They set them far apart, so the babies had to crawl to one or the other —a random choice. After the baby chose one of the toys, the researchers took it away and came back with a new option. The babies could then pick from the toy they didn’t play with the first time, or a brand new toy. Their choices showed they“dis-prefer the unchosen object.”To continue studying the evolution of choice in babies, the lab will next look at the idea of “choice overload.”For adults, choice is good, but too many choices can be a problem, so the lab will try to determine if that is also true for babies.12. What is people’s assumption about the act of making choices?A. They like what they choose.B. They choose what they like.C. They base choices on the fact.D. They make choices thoughtfully.13. Why were babies selected as subjects for the study?A. To help them make better choices.B. To guide them to perceive the world.C. To track the root of making random choices.D. To deepen the understanding of a consumer culture.14. What does the study on the babies show?A. They like novel objects.B. Their choices are mostly based on colors.C. Their random choices become preferences.D. They are unable to make choices for themselves.15. What will the following study focus on?A. The law of “choice overload”.B. The problem of adults’many choices.C. Why too many choices can influence adults.D. Whether babies are troubled with many choices.(2022潍坊高三期中卷)Electronics woven (编织) into fabrics promise to open up all kinds of interesting possibilities, from clothing that monitors muscle activity and tracks breathing, to garments that can talk to one another. Developing pliable power sources to go with them is an equally important field of research, so scientists at the University of British Columbia have put forward a particularly impressive solution that they say could be the first ever battery that is both stretchable and washable. To develop a battery with such capabilities, the scientists reimagined the way these devices are put together. Rather than forming a lithium-ion battery packed with hardened materials inside a rigid exterior, the team turned to an alternative chemistry in zinc-manganese (锌锰) dioxide, which is appealing for its low cost and safety. These materials were ground downinto tiny pieces and inset in a polymer (聚合物) to form very thin and stretchable layers.“We went with zinc-manganese because for devices worn next to the skin, it’s a safer chemistry than lithium-ion batteries, which can produce deadly compounds when they break,”says Nguyen. The resulting battery is flexible and can be stretched to twice its normal length, has a specific capacity of 160 mAh g-1 and keeps 75 percent of its capacity over 500 charge and discharge cycles. Impressively, the team found the battery to withstand 39 wash cycles so far.The team is now working to improve the power output and lifetime of the battery, and says the creation has already attracted commercial interest, with the cost expected to be similar to a standard rechargeable battery. They imagine it being put to use in watches and patches that measure vital signs, and in smart clothing that does much the same thing.8. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “pliable”in paragraph 1?A. Strong.B. Multiple.C. Reliable.D. Flexible.9. What was a major consideration for introducing zinc—manganese battery?A. Safety.B. Hardness.C. Comfortableness.D. Convenience.10. Which aspect of the new battery impressed the researchers in paragraph 4?A. Its washability.B. Its stretch length.C. Its massive capacity.D. Its charge speed.11. What is the main idea of the text?A. Electronic clothing is well received.B. Clothing fitted with new battery is on the way.C. Clothing-friendly battery can be put through wash.D. Electronics woven into fabrics open up possibilities.。

Sleeping is important, but we all know that, right? Many people have experienced strange sleeping patterns, weird dreams and a feeling of restlessness and drowsiness during the coronavirus lockdown, despite a good night’s sleep. So what sort of things can help you to improve your sleep? There's a plethora of myths related to sleep, some of which can be quite damaging for our health. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher famously claimed that she only hit the sack for five hours a night. But according to experts this is detrimental to health. Likewise, kipping in front of the TV is another thing to avoid. The bright lights can prevent you from entering deep sleep. From a young age we're told to count sheep to help us to nod off, with some choosing to stay in bed to battle with insomnia. However, some experts advice getting up and doing something mindless, like folding socks, to help us get in the mood to catch forty winks.Psychologist Seth J. Gillihan PhD recommends walking to help in the battle against insomnia. He talks about a sleep study published in the journal Sleep Health which suggests that those who walk slightly more will experience betterquality and duration of sleep. Watching what you eat or drink can also improve the amount of REM, or rapid eye movement you experience. If you're a snorer, you might also want to take note. While most snoring is harmless, it could be a sign of sleep apnea, with people suffering from the condition more likely to have strokes or heart attacks, irregular heartbeats or high blood pressure. Finally, a decent nap, or even a power nap, can help you to be more alert, calm and focused. So while there are some good tips like exercising or folding socks to help us get a good night's sleep, sometimes a good afternoon's sleep can help us tackle the day ahead.二、词汇表sleeping patterns 睡眠规律restlessness 焦躁不安,躁动drowsiness 睡意朦胧,昏昏欲睡hit the sack 上床睡觉kip 睡觉,打盹deep sleep 深度睡眠count sheep 数绵羊nod off 打瞌睡insomnia 失眠catch forty winks 打盹,小睡REM(rapid eye movement)快速眼动睡眠snorer 睡觉打呼噜的人sleep apnoea 睡眠呼吸暂停nap 小睡,打盹power nap 能量盹a good night's sleep 睡个好觉三、测试与练习阅读课文并回答问题。

2023名校版高考英语阅读理解精读含答案holdLibraries are romantic places. The romance is that of reading, and the wealth of human imagining and learning that is contained in them.Access to the knowledge and literaryart(poetry, fiction, drama) in a library is precious—and particularly valuable to young minds and people of any age with an interest in education. It would be hard to find anyone who actively disapproves of libraries. But when it comes to reality, Britain’s libraries are on less solid ground. The number of books borrowed in the year ending in March,2021 was 72.9m,down 56% on the previous year.Physical visits also collapsed, from 214.6m to 59.7m.Of course, this is the behaviour that one would expect during a pandemic. Many libraries were closed during this period, while people were discouraged from unnecessary mixing.Book sales climbed to their highest in a decade in 2021, which suggests that some former users of libraries may have bought books instead.Private libraries at home, whether large collections or single bookshelves, appear to be developing well. But the hope must be that visits and loans at public libraries will soon return to their former level too.Like any other service, libraries need users. And while booksellers might in one sense be regarded as competitors, in fact the vast majority of those involved in the trade, from publishers to poets, are library lovers. This has something to do with the romantic idea of the reader as explorer, with every book a door to a new store of feeling or understanding. But it also involves the recognition that if books are to form part of our life, there must be space in public for them.Books can be treasured possessions, but there is also something special about a copy that arrives in your hands having passed through those of others—and that will go on being passed between strangers who share your curiosity.1.What has happened to British libraries?A.They have been in a bad state.B.They have become romantic places.C.They have got great appeal for artists.D.They have suffered great loss of users.2.What has led to the home library boom in Britain? A.People avoid close contact in public.B.Many libraries have been pulled down.C.People have access to affordable books.D.More people disapprove of public libraries.3.What does the author try to convey in the last paragraph? A.Books are personal belongings.B.Libraries are a paradise for adventurers.C.Books should be attached importance to. D.Libraries contribute to human connection.4.What is the main idea of the text?A.Libraries will fade out of stage.B.Libraries will hold a promising future. C.Booksellers benefit from libraries’collapse.D.The pandemic has boosted British book sales.“I’ll be there in a few minutes.I’m playing a game with a friend,a guy named Scuzball,”my 15-year-old son shouted from his room.“Oh,what is Scuzball’s real name?”I asked.“I have no idea,”he said.“Where is he from?”I continued. He responded,“I think somewhere in Canada.Oh,wait,it doesn’t even matter because Scuzball just left the game and he has been replaced with a robot.”“Your friend is replaced by artificial intelligence?”“It doesn’t matter,Dad.It happens all the time! The game continues.”My son doesn’t mind playing with a person or a robot, which is typical of gamers these days.I wonder whether the face-to-face experience of friendship that I grew up with will be lost by our children.Aristotle,a great thinker and educator, has pointed out that shallow friendship is easily formed but also easily abandoned because such bonds are fragile.Deep friendship,by contrast,is when you care for your friend for his sake, not for any benefityou can get. This is selfless friendship. You can have only a couple of these friends because they require lots of time and effort. You must make sacrifices for each other.Presence in friendship requires “being with”and “doing for”.Perhaps the most defining feature of deep friendship is “doing for”,as my friend has my back in trouble or brings me soup when I’m sick.Only strong bonds have the power to motivate real sacrifices. But it is unclear why online “friends”would bother to do the hard work of friendship. When I asked my students whether they had people in their lives who would bring them soup when they were sick, they laughed at my Stone Age question and said they’d just order soup online.Digital life fills and absorbs waking life time so that people do not join in example case of friendship, like sports, collective arts,free-range childhoods, etc. In this way, digital lie produces false friendships.5.What does the author start the text with?A.A motto.B.A game.C.A question.D.A conversation.6.What does the author mainly explain in paragraph 3? A.Selfish friendship.B.Selfless sacrifices in life.C.The meaning of deep friendship.D.The formation of shallow friendship.7.What does the author want to tell his students in paragraph 4? A.Strong bonds are formed easily.B.Ordering food online is convenient.C.Robots will have our back in trouble.D.Virtual friends won’t make real sacrifices.8.What is the text mainly about?A.Digitalized friendship.B.The benefits of digital life. C.Face-to-face communication. D.The sacrifices of online friends.以上就是本文的全部内容。

2022高考英语读后续写精读精炼(二)一:原文重现Devi looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with a furious frown on her face. “Mom, they’re all little kid s! I’m 15 already! This is ridiculous!”“I know, Devi,” replied her mother, “but you’re a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!”Devi had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather’s farm, she hadn’t had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Devi had been to was the alligator pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Devi was older, her mother had found a new jo b in the city, and Devi faced a new challenge—school field trips to the local pool. The first day that Devi went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming? Devi confidently slipped into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Devi let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Devi threw her arm toward the side of the pool and grabbed the ledge (池壁), out of breath. “I really can’t swim! Everyone’s going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself in a panic. On the next field trip to the pool, Devi sat on the side on a bench, paralyzed with fear. She huddled with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Devi was upset. “Honey, I’ve signed you up for Angela’s swim ming lessons at the local pool. Soon you’ll learn how to swim just like everyone else,” she assured Devi, showing photos of Angela with her prize-winning students.注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150 左右;2. 每段的开头语已为你写好;Paragraph 1Then came the time for Devi to take her first lesson.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2Soon Angela came over to where Devi sat and introduced herself._______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ 二:文本解析【分析】本文讲述了黛维因为学业和在农场帮助祖父而一直没有时间去游泳,妈妈给黛维在当地找了游泳池学习游泳,黛维初次学习时候感觉很自信,但是真正进入到水里的时候发现游泳比想象中难,不小心呛水的黛维觉得自己很尴尬,恐惧去学游泳,这时黛维的母亲给她报了一个游泳班。

一、真题再现By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova --- not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”Mr. Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.“A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.” Mr. Titterton explained.Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and required up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practice with their page turner.Bu t like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,” Mr. Titterton said, “Luckily I was able to catch them a nd put them back.”Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Mr. Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.“My husband is the worst page turner,” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’ “Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”24.What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner?A. Read music.B. Play the piano.C. Sing songs.D. Fix the instruments.25. Which of the following best describes Titterton’s job on stage?A. Boring.B. Well-paid.C. Demanding.D. Dangerous.26. What does Titterton need to practice?A. Counting the pages.B. Recog nizing the “nodding”.C. Catching falling objects.D. Performing in his own style.27. Why is Ms. Raspopova’s husband “the worse page turner”?A. He has very poor eyesight.B. He ignores the audience.C. He has no interest in music.D. He forgets to do his job.(2021年全国新高考I卷阅读理解B篇)二、语篇导读本文的语篇类型是记叙文,主题语境为人与社会。

2023名校版高考英语阅读理解精读含答案we

2023名校版高考英语阅读理解精读含答案I'm an 18-year-old pre-medical student, tall nd good-looking, with two short story books and quite a number of essays my credit. Why am I singing such praises of myself? Just to explain that he attainment of self-pride comes from a great deal ofself-love, and to attain it, one must first learn to accept oneself as one is. That was where my struggle began.Born and raised in Africa,I had always taken my African origin as burden. My self-dislike was further fueled when my family had to relocate to Norway, where I attended a high school. Compared to all the white girls around me, with their golden hair and delicate lips, I ,a black girl, had curly hair and full, red lips. My nose often had a thin sheet of sweat on it, whatever the weather was. I just wanted to bury myself in my shell crying “I’m so different!”What also contributed to my self-dislike was my occasional stuttering (口吃), which had weakened my self-confidence. It always stood between me and any fine opportunity. I'd taken itas an excuse to avoid any public speaking sessions, and unknowingly let it rule over me.Fortunately, as I grew older, there came a turning point. One day a white girl caught my eye on the school bus when she suddenly turned back. To my astonishment, she had a thin sheet of sweat on her nose too, and it was in November! “Wow,”I whispered to myself, “this isn't a genetic(遗传的) disorder after all. It's perfectly normal.”Days later, my life took an-other twist(转折). Searching the internet for stuttering cures, I accidentally learned that such famous people as Isaac Newton and Winston Churchill also stuttered. I was greatly relieved and then an idea suddenly hit me—if I'm smart, I shouldn't allow my stuttering to stand between me and my success.Another boost to my self-confidence came days later as I was watching the news about Oprah Winfrey, the famous talkshow host and writer—she's black too! Whenever I think of her story and my former dislike of my color, I'm practically filled with shame.Today, I've grown to accept what I am with pride; it simply gives me feeling of uniqueness. The idea of self-love has taken on awhole new meaning for me: there's always something fantastic about us, and what w need to do is learn to appreciate it.41. What affected the author's adjustment to her school life in Norway?A Her appearanceB. Social discrimɪnation.C. Her changing emotions.D. The climate in Norway.42. What did the author's occasional stuttering bring about according on Paragraph 3?A. Her lack of self-confidence.B. Her loss of interest in school.C. Her unwillingness to greet her classmates.D. Her desire for chances to improve herself.43. How did the author feel on noticing the similarity between her and ne girl on the bus?A. Blessed and proud.B. Confused and afraid.C. Amazed and relieved.D. Shocked and ashamed.44. What lesson did the author learn from the cases of Newton and Churchill?A. Great minds speak alike.B. Stuttering is no barrier to success.C. Wisdom counts more than hard work.D. Famous people can't live with their weaknesses.45. What can best summarize the message contained in the passage?A. Pride comes before a fall.B. Where there is a will, there is a way.C. Self-acceptance is based on the love for oneself.D. Self-love is key to the attainment of self-pride.Live with roommates? Have friends and family around you? Chances are that if you’re looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon.I experienced this when I started switching to a zero waste lifestyle five years ago, as I was living with my parents, and I continue to experience this with my husband, as he isnot completely zero waste like me. I’ve learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you’ll find encouraging if you’re doing your best to figure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household.Zero waste was a radical lifestyle movement a few years back.I remember showing my parents a video of BeaJohnson, sharing how cool I thought it would be tobuy groceries with jars, and have so little trash! A few days later, I came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging.Yet as the months of reducing waste continued, I did what I could that was within my own reach. I had my own bedroom, so I worked on removing things I didn’t need. Since I had my own toiletries (洗漱用品), I was able to start personalising my routine to be more sustainable. I also offered to cook every so often, so I portioned out a bit of the cupboard for my own zero waste groceries. Perhaps your household won’t entirely make the switch, but you may have some control over your own personal spaces to make the changes you desire. As you make your lifestyle changes, you may find yourself wanting to speak up for yourself if others comment on what you’re doing, which can turn itself into a whole household debate. If you have individuals who are not on board, yourwords probably won’t do much and can often leave you feeling more discouraged. So here is my advice: Lead by action.24. What do the underlined words “jump on that bandwagon”mean in the first paragraph?A. Share an apartment with you.B. Join you in what you’re doing.C. Transform your way of living.D. Help you to make the decision.25. What was the attitude of the author’s father toward buying groceries with jars?A. He disapproved of it.B. He was favorable to it.C. He was tolerant of it.D. He didn’t care about it.26. What can we infer about the author?A. She is quite good at cooking.B. She respects others’privacy.C. She enjoys being a housewife.D. She is a determined person.27. What is the text mainly about?A. How to get on well with other family members.B. How to have one’s own personal space at home.C. How to live a zero waste lifestyle in a household.D. How to control the budget when buying groceries.。

Far from the land of Antarctica (南极洲), a huge shelf of ice meets the ocean. At the underside of the shelf there lives a small fish, the Antarctic cod.For forty years scientists have been curious about that fish. How does it live where most fish would freeze to death? It must have some secret. The Antarctic is not a comfortable place to work and research has been slow. Now it seems we have an answer.Research was begun by cutting holes in the ice and catching the fish. Scientists studied the fish‘s blood and measured its freezing point. The fish were taken from seawater that had a temperature of -1.88°C and many tiny pieces of ice floating in it. The blood of the fish did not begin to freeze until its temperature was lowered to -2.05°C. That small difference is enough for the fish to live at the freezing temperature of the ice-salt mixture. The scientists‘ next research job was clear: Find out what in the fish‘s blood kept it from freezing. Their search led to some really strange thing made up of a protein (蛋白质) never before seen in the blood of a fish. When it was removed, the blood froze at seawater temperature. When it was put back, the blood again had its antifreeze quality and a lowered freezing point.Study showed that it is an unusual kind of protein. It has many small sugar molecules(分子)held in special positions within each big protein molecule. Because of its sugar content, it is called a glycoprotein. So it has come to be called the antifreeze fish glycoprotein, or AFGP.1.What is the text mainly about?A. The terrible conditions in the Antarctic.B. A special fish living in freezing waters.C. The ice shelf around Antarctica.D. Protection of the Antarctic cod.2.Why can the Antarctic cod live at the freezing temperature?A. That‘s because Moscow has just been found to be the world‘s most expensive city for the second year in a row by Mercer Human Resources Consulting.Using the cost of living in New Y ork as a base, Mercer determined Moscow is 34.4 percent more expensive including the cost of housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment (娱乐).A two-bedroom flat in Moscow now costs $4,000 a month; a CD $24.83, and an international newspaper $6.30, according to Mercer. By comparison, a fast food meal with a hamburger (汉堡包) is a stea l at $4.80.London takes the No. 2 place, up from No. 5 a year ago, thanks to higher cost of housing and a stronger British pound relative to the dollar. Mercer estimates (估算) London is 26 percent more expensive than New Y ork these days. Following London closely are Seoul and Tokyo, both of which are 22 percent more expensive than New Y ork, while No.5 Hong Kong is 19 percent more costly.Among North American cities, New Y ork and Los Angeles are the most expensive and are the only two listed in the top 50 of the world‘s most expensive cities. But both have fallen since last year‘s study—New Y ork came in 15th, down from 10th place, while Los Angeles fell to 42nd from 29th place a year ago. San Francisco came in a distant third at No. 54, down 20 places from a year earlier.Toronto, meanwhile, is Canada‘s most expensive city but fell 35 places to take 82nd place worldwide. And if you don‘t know for sure, it‘s very likely that you can find out. There may be a watch on your wrist; there may be a clock on the wall, desk, or computer screen; or maybe you‘re riding in a car that has a clock in the dashboard (仪表板).Even if you don‘t have a timepiece of some sort nearby, your body keeps its own beat. Humans have an internalclock that regulates (调节) the beating of our heart, the pace of our breathing, the discharge (排出) of chemicals within our bloodstream, and many other bodily functions.Time is something from which we can‘t escape. Even if we ignore it, it‘s s till going by, ticking away, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour. So the main issue in using your time well is, ―Who‘s in charge?‖ We can allow time to slip by and let it be our enemy. Or we can take control of it and make it our ally.By taki ng control of how you spend your time, you‘ll increase your chances of becoming a more successful student. Perhaps more importantly, the better you are at managing the time you devote to your studies, the more time you‘ll have to spend on your outside interests. The aim of time management is not to schedule every moment so we become slaves of a timetable that governs every waking moment of the day. Instead, the aim is to make informed choices as to how we use our time. Rather than letting the day go by, largely without our awareness, what we are going to discuss next can make us better able to control time for our own purposes.13.The underlined word ―ally‖ in Para. 3 most likely means somebody or something that is __________.A. your slave and serves youB. your supporter and helps youC. under your control and obeys youD. under your influence and follows you14.The author intends to tell us that time _____________.A. could be regulated by a timepiece such as a clock or a watchB. could be managed by the internal clock of human bodiesC. should be well managed for our own interestD. should be saved for outside interests15.In the next part, the author would most probably discuss with you ___________.A. how to keep up with the timesB. how to make up for lost time高考英语阅读理解精读(基础版)C. how to have a good timeD. how to make good use of timePassage 5For years we have been told that encouraging a child‘s self-respect is important to his or her success in life. But child experts are now learning that too much praise can lead to the opposite effect, Praise-aholic kids who expect it at every turn may become teens who seek the same kind of approval from their friends when asked if they want to go in the backseat of the car.The implication (含义) of saying ―Y ou are the prettiest girl in class,‖ or talking about the goals she scored but not her overall effort, is that you love her only when she looks the best, scores the highest, achieves the most. And this carries over to the classroom.Social psychologist Carol Dweck, PhD, tested the effects of overpraise on 400 fifth graders while she was at Columbia University. She found that kids praised for ―trying hard‖ did better on tests and were more likely to take on difficult assignments than th ose praised for being ―smart‖.―Praising attributes (品质) or abilities makes a false promise that success will come to you because you have that quality, and it devalues effort, so children are afraid to take on challenges,‖ says Dweck, now at Stanford University. ―They figure they‘d bet ter quit while they‘re ahead.‖16.The underlined words ―Praise-aholic kids‖ refer to kids who are .A. tired of being praisedB. worthy of being praisedC. very proud of being praisedD. extremely fond of being praised17.The author quoted (引用) Dr. D weck‘s words in the last paragraph in order to make the article .A. better-knownB. better-organizedC. more persuasiveD. more interesting18.We can infer from the passage that .A. praise for efforts should be more encouragedB. praise for results works better than praise for effortsC. praising a child‘s achievements benefits his or her success in lifeD. praising a child‘s abilities encourages him or her to take on challengesPassage 6When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm, and, in the winter especially, we were quite out off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that my life has its problems too.One big disadvantage is money—it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma (哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever you tastes in culture or entertainment (娱乐活动). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising—and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.Is life better then, in the city? To climb, you need special shoes and a harness (保护带) around your chest to hold you. There are ropes (绳索) tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you don‘t fall. Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man, when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know?T elevision has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment. Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbacks (平装本), which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example, is always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or the theater, and you can keep a book for ever and read it many times.Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have a good dictionary. A good encyclopedia (百科全书), though expensive, is useful, too, because you can find information on any subject. Besides, you can have such books as history books, science textbook, cookbooks, and collections of stories and poems. Passage 10The small number of newborn babies, which has been caused by high prices and the changing social situation of women, is one of the most serious problems in Asia. When people talk about it, you can hear a word invented in Japan, ―DINKS‖, which means Double Income No Kids(小孩).In many major Asian cities like Seoul, Singapore, and Tokyo, the cost of a house is extremely high. A young couple who want to buy their own house may have to pay about $300,000 (though prices have fallen). For a flat with one bedroom, one dining-room, a kitchen, and a bathroom, the couple will pay about $900 a month. What’s more, if they want to have a child, the child‘s education is very expensive. For example, most kindergarten charges are at least $5,000 a year. In such a situation, it‘s difficult to afford children. The number of married women who want to continue working increases rapidly because they enjoy their jobs. However, if they want to have children, they immediately have serious problems. Though most companies allow women to leave their jobs for a short time to have a baby, they expect women with babies to give up their jobs. In short, if they want to bring up children properly, both parents have to work, but it is hard for mothers to work. Indeed, women who want to continue working have to choose between having children or keeping their jobs.In a word, Asian governments must take steps to improve the present situation as soon as possible.35.What is the main problem being discussed in the passage?A. Worse, have you ever given a present and watched your friend took as though she had opened thewrong box? Maybe she responded with a po lite ―Why, thank you,‖ but you knew you had missed the mark. Why do presents sometimes to wrong? And what do your choices (good and bad) reflect about your personal qualities?Choosing the right gift is an art, I believe. It calls for empathy—the ability t o put yourself into someone else‘s head and heart. We‘re all able to do this; in fact, we‘re born with a kind of natural empathy. After the earliest period ofchildhood, however, it needs to be reinforced (加强)—by our parents, teachers, friends. When it isn‘t, we‘re not able to understand other people‘s feelings as sharply. This can show in the gifts we select, and so can many other emotional (情感的) qualities.Think back to the presents you‘ve given over the past year, the time and effort you put into your selection, howmuch you spent, your thoughts while you were shopping, and your feelings when the receiver opened the package. Keep in mind that what you choose displays your inner world. Of course, you may express yourself differently with different friends, relatives, and other people you know.We live in a society where exchanging presents is an important part of communication. Though he appeared to be about twelve, he seemed to have already known the bitterness of life. ―Banana 300 naira. Peanuts 200 naira.‖ He said in a low voice. I bargained him down to 200 total for the fruitand nuts. When he agreed, I handed him a 500 naira bill. He didn‘t have change, so I told him not to worry. He said thanks and smiled a row of perfect teeth. When, two weeks later, I saw the boy again, I was more aware of my position i n a society where it‘s not thatuncommon to see a little boy who should be in school standing on the corner selling fruit in the burning sun. My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantage we had been afforded and the responsibility it brought to us.I pulled over and rolled down my window. He had a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts ready. I waved them away. ―What’s up?‖ I asked him. ―I…I don‘t have money to buy books for school.‖ I reached into my pocket and handed him two fresh 500 naira bills. ―Will this help?‖ I asked. He looked around nervously before taking the money. One thousand naira was a lot of money to someone whose family probably made about 5,000 naira or less each year. ―Thank you, sir,‖ he said. ―Thank you very much!‖When driving home, I wondered if my little friend actually used the money for schoolbooks. What if he‘s a cheat(骗子)? And then I wondered why I did it. Did I do it to make myself feel better? Was I using him? Later, I realized that I didn‘t know his name or the least bi t about him, nor did I think to ask.Over the next six months, I was busy working in a news agency in northern Nigeria. Sometime after I returned, I went out for a drive. When I was about to pull over, the boy suddenly appeared by my window with a big smile ready on his face.―Oh, gosh! Long time.‖―Are you in school now?‖ I asked. He nodded.―That‘s good,‖ I said. A silence fell as we looked at each other, and then I realized what he wanted. ―Here, I held out a 500 naira bill. ―Take this.‖ He shook his head and stepped back as if hurt. ―What‘s wrong?‖ I asked. ―It‘s a gift.‖He shook his head again and brought his hand from behind his back.
