Recently,a group of scientists decided to find out what the funniest joke in the worldwas. This was obviously a difficult task, as no two people really agree aboutwhat is funny and what is not—especially when they are from differentcountries.

Here isthe joke which the experts decided was the funniest joke in the world:

Twohunters were out in the woods. One of them fell to the ground. He didn’t seemto be breathing; his eyes were closed. The other hunter took out his mobilephone and called the emergency services.

“Myfriend is dead!” he cried to the operator. “What can I do?”The operator said,”Don’t worry. First, make sure he’s dead.” There was a silence, and then a shot was heard.Bang! The hunter’s voice came back on the line. He said, “OK, now what?”

This isperhaps amusing. Culturally, it depends on us knowing that often hunters arenot considered to be very intelligent people, and that often they are quiteviolent. But perhaps this is not so all over the world. It’s also quite a “black”joke—a joke about something which isn’t really a funny subject. The expertsalso found the second funniest joke in the world. Here it is:

SherlockHolmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. After dinner, they went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes woke up. “Watson, look up at the sky and tel l mewhat you see.” “I see millions of stars, Holmes,” repliedWatson.

“Andwhat do you infer from that?”

“Well, there are billions of stars ... we are a small part of the universe ...”

“Watson, you idiot!” he said. “Someone has stolen our tent!” I personallythink this is better.

Theinvention of steel frames in the late 1800s meant that the walls did not carrythe weight of a structure. This development meant that suddenly much tallerbuildings were possible, and they could be built quickly. Skyscrapers had beenborn, and they were about to change the face of our

cities.

Since1901 the world’s tallest building had always been a skyscraper and until 1974this was always in New York. Only after the end of the century did the tallestbuilding appear outside North America, with the opening of the first buildingto be more than half a kilometer tall, Taipei 101.

Tallbuilding are seen as a symbol of success and status by many but they are notalways popular with local residents. The construction of the Shard, the tallestbuilding in London and in the entire European Union, has been highlycontroversial. It is only a few hundred meters across the River Thames from theTower of London--one of the oldest and most famous landmarks in London.Manyfeel that such modern constructions should not be built near to historic sites.

Londonresidents should hope that the opening of the Shard doesn’t lead to a majordowntown in their economy. The Empire State Building was finished in 1931, verysoon after Wall Street crashed. The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur were builtin 1988, just after the Asian financial crisis. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai wasopened in early 2010, and shortly afterwards the emirate’s investment companycollapsed.

The BurjKhalifa might be the tallest structure in the world currently but its status isunder threat from numerous planned buildings around the world. One tower whichwill probably never be built is the 4km high X-Seed 4000 in Tokyo. It wasdesigned in 1995 to attract publicity rather than as a serious proposal, butwho knows when such fanciful ideas could become a reality? The Burj

Khalifa ismore that double the height of the Empire State Building, and surely no one in1931 would have imagined that.

(1)What make the building of skyscrapers possible?

A . The using of the steel frames.

B . The improvement of the wall material.

C . The changing of the city face.

D . ‘The increase of the building height.

(2)What is most Londoners’ attitude towards the constr uction of the Shard?

A . Supportive.

B . Uncooperative.

C . Acceptable.

D . Critical.

(3)How is paragraph 4 developed?

A . By analyzing possible reasons.

B . By stating general characters.

C . By providing typical examples.

D . By listing practical proposals.

(4)What is the best title for the text?

A . Skyscrapers: symbol of success

B . Skyscrapers: ideal buildings

Kensington Palace revealed the royal baby's full name yesterday after days of speculation and close friends of Princess Diana immediately said the choice means the spirit of Prince William's beloved mother 'lives on'. William was, however, clear that his baby girl should not have Diana as a first name. "It would have been a millstone around her neck," said one of the princess' s longtime friends. Within minutes of the name being announced this afternoon, Diana's closest friend Rosa Monckton said: "Diana's spirit lives on in her sons, and now her name lives on in her granddaughter 'Charlotte Elizabeth Diana'. "Diana was the godmother of Mrs. Monckton's daughter Dominica The British citizens show their satisfaction with this name via Intemet. They said it is the perfect name for their lovely princess.
