If there is any noticeable damage, immediately notify your dealer.Each meter is supplied with batteries, rugged carrying case and instructionsNote: Save all packing materials until you are sure that the instrument functions correctly. Alldefective items must be returned in the originalpacking materials together with the suppliedaccessories.HANNA instruments® has designed these two rugged waterproof salinity and sodium meters for regular use in the lab, as well as in harsh processing environments.HI 931100 is an ion-selective meter that uses a sodium electrode to read the salt (NaCl) content of a solution. HI 931100 autoranges (4 scales available) from sample to sample allowing an extremely wide range of measurements without recalibration.HI 931101 employs the FC 300B combination sodium electrode to provide sodium readings from 15.0 mg/L to 60 g/L.The calibration is automatic at 2 points, the first is at 2.3 g/L while the second can be either at 0.23 g/L (low range) or at 23.0 g/L (high range).A separate temperature probe, HI 7662, provides tem-perature readings from 0 to 80ºC.Dear Customer,Thank you for choosing a HANNA instruments®product.Please read this instruction manual carefully beforeusing the instrument.If you need additional technical information, do nothesitate to e-mail us at******************directives.Preliminary Examination (3)General Description (3)Functional Description HI931100 (4)Specifications HI931100 (5)Functional Description HI931101 (6)Specifications HI 931101 (7)Operational Guide (8)Na Calibration (HI 931101) (12)NaCl Calibration (HI 931100) (15)Special Applications & Additional Info (18)Temperature Calibration (21)FC 300B Conditioning & Maintenance (23)Battery Replacement (26)Accessories (27)Warranty (29)CE declaration of conformity (30)3541.Battery compartment2.BNC connector for electrode3.Temperature probe socket4.LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)5.ON/OFF key, to turn the meter on or off6.CAL key, to enter/exit calibration mode7.CFM key, to confirm calibration8.BUF key, to select calibration buffer valueRange0.150 to 1.500 / 1.50 to 15.00 / 15.0 to 150.0150 to 300 g/L NaCl0.0 to 80.0°CResolution0.001 / 0.01 / 0.1 / 1 g/L NaCl0.1°CAccuracy ±5% of reading (NaCl)(@20°C)±0.5°CTypical EMC Deviation±2% FS (NaCl) / ±0.5°C CalibrationAutomatic, 1 or 2 point at 3.00 g/L (HI 7083) and0.30 g/L (HI 7085) or 30.0 g/L (HI 7081)Temperature Compensation25°C (77°F)Electrode FC300B sodium electrodewith BNC and 1 m (3.3) cable (not included)Temperature ProbeHI 7662 (not included)Input Impedance1012 OhmBattery Type / Life4 x 1.5V AA / approx. 200 hours of use Environment 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F);RH max 100%Dimensions 196 x 80 x 60 mm (7.7 x 3.1 x 2.4")Weight500 g (1.1 lb.)76Range0.00 to 3.00 pNa 15.0 to 150.0 mg/L Na0.150 to 1.500 / 1.50 to 15.00 / 15.0 to 60.0 g/L Na0.0 to 80.0°CResolution0.01 pNa / 0.1 mg/L Na 0.001 / 0.01 / 0.1 / 1 g/L Na0.1°C Accuracy ±0.05 pNa(@20°C)±5% of reading (Na)±0.5°CTypical EMC Deviation±2% FS (pNa and Na) / ±0.5°C CalibrationAutomatic, 1 or 2 point at 2.3 g/L (HI 7080) and0.23 g/L (HI 7087) or 23.0 g/L (HI 7086)Temperature Compensation25°C (77°F)Electrode FC300B sodium electrodewith BNC an 1 m (3.3) cable (not included)Temperature ProbeHI 7662 (not included)Input Impedance1012 OhmBattery Type / Life4 x 1.5V AA / approx. 200 hours of useEnvironment 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F);RH max 100%Dimensions196 x 80 x 60 mm (7.7 x 3.1 x 2.4")Weight500 g (1.1 lb.)1.Battery compartment2.BNC connector for electrode3.Temperature probe socket4.LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)5.ON/OFF key, to turn the meter on or off6.CAL key, to enter/exit calibration mode7.MODE key, to select Na or pNa range8.CFM key, to confirm calibration9.BUF key, to select calibration buffer value98For accurate readings, calibration should be per-formed (or verified) every day if measuring the same type of samples (e.g. cheese), or every time the sample type is changed (e.g. cheese, meat, sea water, etc.).The recommended working temperature is around 20-25°C (68-77°F). For greater accuracy, perform the calibration with standard solutions at a tempera-ture as close as possible to the temperature of the sample.TAKING SODIUM MEASUREMENTS Remove the protective cap from the FC300B sodium electrode and, if possible, rinse it with some of the sample to be measured.Shift downwards the rubber sleeve (see picture) to have a properly work-ing junction.Immerse the tip of the FC300B elec-trode (at least 2.5cm/1") into the sample to be tested while making sure that the electrode junction is completely immersed, and without touching the bottom of the beaker.Wait for approximately 10 to 15 minutes to allow for the electrode to adjust and stabilize, i.e. until no drifting is observed for at least a couple of minutes.During measurement, if possible,the sample should be gentlystirred (100 rpm).INITIAL PREPARATION Each meter is supplied com-plete with four 1.5V AA batter-ies.Remove the back cover, unwrap the batteries and install them while paying attention to their polarity.PROBE CONNECTION Connect the FC300B sodium electrode to the BNC socket on the top of the instrument.Connect the HI 7662 tempera-ture probe to the RCA socket.The temperature probe can be used independently to take tem-perature measurements.If the probe is not plugged in,the secondary display shows "25°C" with the "°C" indicator blinking.To switch the instrument on,press and hold the ON/OFF key for a fraction of a second.These meters have a built-in protection against elec-tromagnetic interferences and the holding of the keys is to ensure that the commands are not mis-taken for erroneous signals.In order to take accurate measurements, make sure the instrument is calibrated before use(see "Calibration" sections for details).FC 300B SODIUMHI 7662N TEMPERA TURE1110If the electrode is used rarely (once a month or less), store it dry. Before using it again, let it condition overnight in HI 7081 (30.0 g/L NaCl) or HI 7086 (23 g/L Na 1M)To avoid very long response time, do not store or rinse the electrode with deionized water. Donot rub the electrode.TAKING pNa MEASUREMENTS (HI 931101 only)Press the MODE key during measurement to con-vert the value displayed by the HI 931101 to pNa.Note thatpNa = -log a Nawhere a Na is the activity of ion Na.Press the MODE key again to return to g/L mea-surements.Note : The temperature is alwaysdisplayed on the secondary LCD.AFTER USETurn the meter off by pressing the ON/OFF key again.For faster and accurate measurements, the electrode should be stored in a solution with a Na/NaCl concen-tration similar to the sample to be measured.After use, shift back upwards therubber sleeve (see picture).1312SINGLE POINT CALIBRATION (OFFSET) •Dip the FC300B sodium elec-trode into the HI 7080 (2.3g/L Na) solution.Note :Immerse the electrodeapproximately 2.5 cm (1") into the solution.•Press the CAL key. The "CAL" and "BUF" indi-cators will be displayed with the "BUF" and the"" symbols blinking. •"electrode is stabilizing. The required standard solution be-ing value is displayed on the primary LCD.•As soon as the electrode sta-bilized, the "CON" symbol ap-pears on the display.Press the CFM key to save the calibration point. For best results, wait for a couple of minutes before confirming. •HI 931101 will display "0.230gm".Calibration can be performed at 1 (offset only) or 2points.For best accuracy, a 2 point procedure is recom-mended.PREPARATION•Pour small quantities of HI7080 (2.3 g/L Na) solution and HI 7087 (0.23 g/L Na) or HI 7086 (23 g/L Na) into two beakers.For accurate readings, use for the second point the HI 7087 solution if you are going to measure samples with low sodium content (below 2.3 g/L), or theHI 7086 standard if you are going to measure samples with high sodium content (over 2.3 g/L).•For accurate calibration use two beakers for each solu-tion, the first one for rinsing the electrode, the second one for calibration.If possible, use plastic beakers to minimize any EMC interferences.•Turn the meter on by press-ing the ON/OFF key.•are going to use first.•Shift downwards the rubber sleeve for a properly working junction (see picture).1514Wait for a couple of minutes and then press the CFM key.•normal measurement mode.•For exiting the calibration mode and save the single point cali-bration, press the CAL key. For better accuracy however, it is recommended to perform a 2point calibration.TWO POINT CALIBRATION •After the first point is confirmed,immerse the FC300B electrode into the second standard solu-tion: HI 7087 at 0.23 g/L Na or HI 7086 at 23 g/L Na.Note :The electrode should beimmersed approximately 2.5 cm (1") into the solu-tion.•Select the calibration value by pressing the BUF key. Make sure that the selected value cor-responds to the solution being used for the second calibration point.•If the reading is not close to the selected calibration standard, the "BUF" indicator will continue to blink.Otherwise, if the reading is close to the selected calibration value,the meter will recognize the stan-dard solution and only the ""symbol will blink, to indicate that the reading is stabilizing.•Once stabilized "CON" symbolwill appear on the display.Calibration can be performed at 1 (offset only) or 2points.For best accuracy, a two point procedure is recom-mended.PREPARATION •Pour small quantities of HI 7083 (3.00 g/L NaCl) solu-tion and HI 7085 (0.30 g/L) or HI 7081 (30 g/L) into two clean beakers.For more accurate readings use for the second poit the HI 7085 solution if you are going to measure samples with low sodium chloride con-tent (< 3 g/L), or the HI 7081 solution for samples with high sodium chloride content (> 3 g/L). •For an accurate calibration, use two beakers for each solution, the first one for rinsing the electrode, the sec-ond one for calibration.If possible use plastic beakers to minimize any EMC interferences.•Turn the meter on by press-ing the ON/OFF key.•Remove the protective cap and rinse the elec-trode with some of the calibration solution you are going to use first.•Shift downwards the rubber sleeve for a properly working junction (see picture).1716•To quit the calibration and save the first point, press the CAL key.TWO POINT CALIBRATION•After the first point is confirmed,immerse the FC300B electrode into the second solution:HI 7085 at 0.3 g/L NaCl or HI 7081 at 30 g/L NaCl.Note :The electrode should beimmersed approximately 2.5 cm (1") into the so-lution. •Select the second point value by pressing the BUF key. Make sure that the selected value cor-responds to the one being used for the second calibration point. •If the reading is not close to the selected value, the "BUF"symbol will blink.Otherwise, if the reading is close to the selected value, the meter will recognize the stan-dard solution. Only the ""symbol will blink, to indicate that the reading is stabilizing.•Once stabilized "CON" symbol will appear on the display.For best results, wait for a couple of minutes and press the CFM key.•The two point calibration is now completed and the meter re-turns to the normal mode.SINGLE POINT CALIBRATION (OFFSET) •Dip the FC300B sodium elec-trode into the HI 7083 (3.00g/L NaCl) solution.Note :Immerse the electrodeapprox. 2.5 cm (1") into the solution.•Press the CAL key. The "CAL" and "BUF" indi-cators will be displayed with the "BUF" and the "" symbols blinking.•"trode is stabilizing.The value of the standard solu-tion being used will be displayed on the primary LCD.•As soon as the electrode is sta-bilized, "CON" symbol lights up.For best results, wait for a couple of minutes before pressing the CFM key.•HI 931100 will then display "30.0gm".1918UTION6.Wait for the reading to stabilize, i.e. no drift should be observed for at least a couple of minutes. Note the measured value.7.Since the dilution rate is 1/10, the reading in the g/L range has to be divided by 100 to get the actual reading of NaCl (per gram of cheese or meat), or the value can be considered directlyexpressed in % of NaCl.Note : A response time of 10 to 15 minutes for thefirst measurement of cheese or meat, is the correct expected time for the electrode tostabilize. Next measurements of cheese or meat samples will require shorter response time (less than 2 minutes). Do not rinse the sodium electrode between subsequent mea-surements since contamination is negligible.IONIC STRENGTH ADJUSTER (ISA)When the NaCl concentration of the sample is lower than 5 g/L, it is recommend to use the HI 7090 ISA solution. In such case, calibration should be per-formed with standard solution containing 2% of ISA.ISA (Ionic Strength Adjuster) = 50% of NH 4Cl 4M +50% of NH 4OH 4M (use 2 mL of ISA every 100 mL of sample).HOW TO MEASURE SODIUM CHLORIDE IN CHEESE AND MEAT (HI 931100)1.Grind a sample of cheese or meat.2.Pour a quantity (X g) in a glass beaker. Add (X)x 10 mL of deionized water (note : ignoring water content of cheese and meat).3.Cover the beaker to prevent any spilling during stirring, place the beaker on a hot plate stirrer and agitate the sample at 40-50°C (104-122°F)for 15-20 minutes.4.Let the sample cool to the ambient temperature,then filter it.5.Dip the FC 300B sodium electrode into the fil-tered sample. The tip of the electrode should be immersed for approximately 2.5cm/1" (i.e. the electrode junction must be completely immersed)without touching the bottom of the beaker. Dur-ing measurement, the sample should be gently stirred (100 rpm).2120INITIAL PREPARATIONPrepare a 0°C/32°F bath with ice and water and another one at 50°C/122°F using hot water at a known temperature. Place insulation material around the containers to minimize temperature e a Checktemp or another accurate thermometer with a resolution of 0.1° as reference.Note: A blinking "°C" indicatesthat the temperature probe is not connected.PROCEDURE•Connect the HI 7662 temperature probe to the RCA socket on the top of the instrument.•Turn the instrument off.•To enter the temperature calibration mode, press the CAL and ON/OFF keys simultaneously. •Immerse the temperature probe into the 0°C/32°F bath together with the reference thermom-eter.•When the reading stabilizes,press the CAL key. The "0.0°C", "CAL" and "BUF"symbols will be displayed. The "" symbol will blink for afew seconds.TEMPERATUREThe best working temperature is around 20-25°C (68-77°F).For greatest accuracy, it is recommended to cali-brate the meter with standard solution at a tempera-ture as close as possible to the temperature of the sample (±1°C/±2°F).Na CONCENTRATION WITH HI 931100It is always possible to determine the Na concentra-tion by using the formula:X Na = X NaCl • (23 / 58.4)whereX Na = concentration of NaandX NaCl = concentration of NaCl22PREPARATIONRemove the protective cap.with water.properly under these conditions. These bubbles can be removed by "shaking down" the electrode as you would do with a glass thermometer. If the bulb and/or junctionare dry, soak the elec-trode in HI 7081 (NaCl30.0 g/L) solution over-night before use withHI931100. Soak it inHI7086 (Na 23 g/L) solu-tion overnight before usewith HI931101.If the electrolyte solutionis more than 1cm (½")below the filling hole, addHI8093 1M KCl+AgCl electrolyte solution.Shift downwards the rub-ber sleeve during mea-surements and calibra-tion.SODIUM MEASUREMENTRinse the sodium electrode tip with some of the sample to be tested, then immerse the tip (approx. 2.5 cm /1") in the sample and stir gen-tly.•When the input value be-comes stable, the ""symbol disappears and"CON" will start blinking.value.•Immerse the temperature probe into the 50°C (122°F)bath.•Press the CAL key to dis-play the "0.0°C" and thenpress the BUF key to se-lect "50.0°C".

Any defective item must be returned in its original packaging with the supplied accessories.With HI 93703-11 turbidity measurements can be performed with high precision in the field as well as in the laboratory. HI93703-11 turbidity meter is a microprocessor-based instrument used to determine the turbidity of water and waste-water. The meter covers a 0-1000 FTU range in two scales: 0.00 to 50.00 FTU and 50to 1000 FTU. The autoranging feature of the instrument sets the appropriate range for the measurement.HI 93703-11 also includes a real-time clock and log-on-demand capability. The PC communication is made through a serial port of your computer and the 5-pin socket on the meter.Note:HI 93703-11 has been designedaccording to the ISO 7027 International Standard, consequently the turbidity measurement units are expressed in FTU (Formazine Turbidity Unit). FTU is identical to the other internationally recognized unit: NTU (NephelometricTurbidity Unit).22HI 731318Tissue for wiping cuvets (4pcs)HI 731321Spare glass cuvet (4pcs)HI 731313Maintenance kit: rugged carrying case including HI 93703-0 and HI 93703-10calibration solutions, HI 93703-50 cuvet cleaning solution, 1tissue for wiping cuvets and 2cuvetsHI 93703-0AMCO-AEPA-1 @0 FTU*calibration solution, 30 mL HI 93703-05AMCO-AEPA-1 @500 FTU*calibration solution, 30 mL HI 93703-10AMCO-AEPA-1 @10 FTU*calibration solution, 30 mL HI 93703-50Cuvet cleaning solution, 230mLHI 92000Windows ® compatible software HI 920011Serial cable for PC connection (5 to 9-pin)* 1 FTU = 1 NTU4The meter is housed in a rugged and lightweight case, with an easy-to-read LCD.To save battery-life, the instrument is equipped with an automatic shut-off feature which is activated after 5-minutes of non-use. This fea-ture is disabled when the meter is connected to the serial port of the computer.All operations can be carried out with only five keys and troubleshooting functions can be performed with displayed error code guides.A positive-locking system guarantees that the cuvet is firmly placed in the cell.The keypad is water-resistant and can be wiped with a moist cloth for quick cleanups.Two or three point calibration (0,10, 500 FTU*)can be easily performed using available stan-dards, and the last calibration date is auto-matically stored for future retrivial.We have chosen 10 FTU * as the standard calibration point because it best fits the water turbidity measurements in different applications, from drinking water to waste-water treatment.HANNA instruments ® uses the primary stan-dard AMCO-AEPA-1 to avoid all formazine-related problems. Formazine is a toxic, un-stable substance, which requires particular care:its standards have to be prepared only a few minutes before performing the calibration, and cannot be reused because of their short life.HANNA instruments ® standards are extremely stable, can be reused, and last up to six months, if free from contamination.HI 93703-11 can be used with both standards.* 1 FTU = 1 NTU21Battery replacement must only take place in a safe area and using 1.5V AA alkaline batteries.To install or replace the batteries, turn the unit off and remove the battery compartment cover on the raer of the meter.Insert the new batteries while paying attention to the polarity.After the batteries have been installed, close the battery cover and make sure the gasket is in place before tightening the 2 screws, to ensure a watertight seal.POTSTo communicate with the instrument through the HI 92000 software, use the HI 920011 cable (optional) to connect a serial port of your com-puter to the 5 pin connector of the meter.When connected the meter will maintain full functionality, being able to perform a data trans-fer while the meter is being operated.Notes :• Serial communication is not allowed when the meter is being calibrated.• The auto shut-off feature is also disabled when the meter is connected to a computer.5IR LEDCUVETLIGHT DETECTORLIGHT* 1 FTU = 1 NTUHI 93703-11 has been designed to perform measurements according to the ISO 7027 In-ternational Standard.The instrument functions by passing a beam of infrared light through a vial containing the sample being measured.A sensor, positioned at 90° with respect to the direction of light, detects the amount of light scattered by the undissolved particles present in the sample. The microprocessor converts such readings into FTU* values.As noted above, FTU unit is equal to the NTU unit. However, there are other known measure-ment units for turbidity: Jackson Turbidity Unit (JTU) based on the old method of Jackson's candle, and Silica Unit (mg /L of SiO 2). For your reference the conversion table between these measurement units is shown below:JTUFTU/NTUSiO 2 (mg/L)JTU119 2.5FTU/NTU 0.05310.13SiO 2 (mg /L)0.47.5120All components have been selected to mini-mize current drain without compromising func-tionality. In order to minimize the battery con-sumption, the meter is equipped with an auto-shut off function which switches the meter off after 5 minutes of non-use.The four 1.5V batteries guarantee 60 hours of working life (or 900 measurements).In order to obtain accurate measurements, the battery level is monitored every time the meter is switched on.In addition, a "LO BAT " indication will appear on the lower right corner of the display when the batteries are weak (<10%). All four batteries need to be replaced.When the batteries are too weak to ensure reliable measurements, the message 0% LO BAT appears for a few seconds, and then the meter will automatically switch itself off. Re-place the batteries immediately.61)Measurement cell2)LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)3)ON/OFF/CLR key, to turn the meter ON and OFF, and to clear log memory4)GLP/CAL key, to display last calibration date & time, and to enter calibration mode 5)STO/VIEW key, to store sample after read-ing, and to view log memory6)READ/DATE key, to perform measure-ments, and to display (toggle) current date/time7)ALT key, to activate the second functions (second function keys in orange)8)RS232 connector (5 pin)19* 1 FTU = 1 NTUSTANDARD SUSPENSIONPresently, there are only two recognized pri-mary standards: AMCO-AEPA-1 and formazine.Hanna supplies HI 93703-11 with the AMCO-AEPA-1 which has a much longer shelf life at all concentrations (approx. six months, if free from contamination). In addition, no special handling or disposal is required and a much higher stability of suspended particles has been ob-served.On the other hand, formazine is a toxic sub-stance, generated by a known carcinogen, with poor stability (particles flocculate and settle quickly). Lower concentrations change value within a few days or hours after dilution.The consistency of HI 93703-11 readings by using both standards has been separately es-tablished by Advanced Polymer Systems and Hanna Instruments.Additional documentation about the formazine standard and more complex calibration proce-dures is available upon request.•All glassware that comes into contact with standards should be maintained clean. Wash with the HI 93703-50 cleaning solution and rinse with HI 93703-0 or turbidity free water.•Rinse the vial twice with 5 ml of the liquid to be tested. This removes the effect of any previous liquid and any dust or foreign ob-jects that may be present inside. Gently pour the liquid down the side of the vial to reduce air bubbles (no mixing is required when HI 93703-0 and HI 93703-10 AMCO-AEPA-1standards are used).•Before inserting the vial into the instrument,wipe it with HI93703-70 or a soft, lint-free tissue. In such cases, the correct amount of HI 93703-0 or turbidity-free water to be added to the sample can be calculated as follows:Vos = 3000 / T where:Vos = volume of sample (mL) to becombined with HI 93703-0 to obtain the final volume of 100mL.T =HI 93703 reading (exceeding40FTU*)E.g.:HI 93703 reading = 200 FTU *3000 / 200 = 15 mL (Vos)15 mL (Vos)+85 mL (HI93703-0) = 100 mL At this point, take a sample of this solution and measure its turbidity.The correct turbidity value of the original sample will be:T n x 100 mL / Vos = T awhere:T n = new HI 93703 readingT a =actual turbidity value of the originalsample E.g.If T n = 27 FTU *T a = 27 FTU *x100 mL / 15 mL = 180 FTU *NOTE: Any sample taken above 1000 FTU will show out of range by blinking "1000".15* 1 FTU = 1 NTUhours (the sample needs to be kept at room temperature prior to the analysis).•To obtain a representative sample, gently,but thoroughly, mix it before samples are taken. Do not shake (to prevent air bubbles)and do not let the sample settle.•It is recommended to calibrate the meter with the supplied HI 93703-10 @10 FTU* stan-dard at least once a month or more frequently for greater accuracy.•Before inserting vials into the instrument,wipe them with HI 93703-70 or a soft, lint-free tissue. Handle vials so that no finger-prints get on the areas where light passes (approx. the bottom 2 cm/1 inch).If you experience any problems in taking mea-surements, contact your dealer or the nearest Hanna Customer Service Center.SOURCES OF INTERFERENCE•Presence of floating debris and coarse sedi-ments which settle out rapidly will give false readings.•The infrared light source used for HI 93703-11 turbidity meter, complies with the ISO 7027 International Standard and can effec-tively minimize any errors due to colored dissolved substances. This effect, called "true color", is a common interference for most commercially available instruments operating in the range of visible light.•Air bubbles and the effect of vibrations that disturb the surface of the sample may give false results and should be avoided.•Dirty glassware could also affect readings along with scratched or dented vials.11LOG-ON-DEMAND:•right corner the reference number of the stored sample.NOTE: When the maximum number of samples has been reached (199), the LCD dis-play will show "FULL".This is a warning that you will be overwrit-ing the oldest sample recorded.
