On March 14th2018, one of science’s brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the world-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK.
Hawking is considered by many to be the greatest scientist in history since Albert Einstein. He came up with the theory(学说) that the universe (宇宙) began with the Big Bang (大爆炸) and will end in black holes. His theories became the base for a lot of later research. But this didn’t stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. “If one is physically disabled, one cannot afford to be psychologically (心理上) d isabled as well,” he once said.
He celebrated his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon; when he was 65, he took part in a zero-gravity (零重力) flight to experience weightlessness. He hoped to travel into space one day.

A new Chinese-English edition(版本) of the four classics of Chinese literature(文学) recently came out by a Shanghai publishing house after ten years of persistent(持久的) efforts, The four great classical novels were finished in the Ming and Qing dynasties, around half a century ago, and include The Story of the Stone, The Three Kingdoms, The Journey to the West, and The Marshes of Mount Liang.
The Marshes of Mount Liang translated by John and Alex Deng-Young was first published in 2011, followed by The Story of the Stone by British sinologists David Hawks and John Minford, and The Journey to the West by Anthony C. Yu, a scholar of literature at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) and the University of Chicago.
The Three Kingdoms, translated by Chinese professor Yu Sumei, was the last of the series(系列) to be translated, but it is the first English version(译本) by a Chinese translator, and his fellows have spoken highly of it.
“The Three Kingdoms represents the supreme achievement of historical novels in ancient China, and also vividly(生动的) reflects the political and culture of that time” said Professor Cha Mingjian from the Shanghai International Studies University.
Cha said Yu’s translation is faithful(忠实于) to the original and more acceptable for Western readers, and can be compared to the Homer’s Epic in the English world. Its purpose is to make more foreign readers understand China's traditional culture.
