When he was just 7 years old, Justus , was living at a garbage dump(垃圾场) in Rwanda（卢旺达）. He would compete with other children, even many pigs, for food. Sundays were the worst because the trucks that carried restaurants? left-over food didn?t come, so there would often be nothing to eat. He lived with other children in an old bus without windows and wheels. He had no family. His parents were killed in a war.
A few years later, Clare Effiong, an American charity(慈善机构) worker, showed up at the dump. She said she could offer several children a chance to leave with her.
Justus accepted this offer. He hadn?t h ad a bath in over a year. It wa s a Sunday, so he hadn?t eaten. And most of all, when Ms Effiong asked why he wanted to get out there, he said, “I want to go to school.”
Ms Effiong took him in, got him to clean up, and sent him to school. He was so hungry to learn and he worked very hard, and later he was at the top of his class. He now speaks five languages. And he has started to help other children who are in the same situation he was in. He started college last autumn on a full scholarship(奖学金)… at Harvard University!
It is a wonderful story. More importantly, it is a reminder that so many more children should have this chance. And that we can all play a role in helping make that happen.

Elizabeth Blackwell?s life changed one afternoon in 1844, when she was 23. Blackwell went to visit a friend who was dying. The dying woman asked her why she did not think of studying medicine. When Blackwell reminded her friend that there were no women doctors, the woman said if she had been treated by a woman doctor, she might not be dying.
Black well couldn?t get friend?s suggestion out of her mind. She decided to try to become a doctor. She wrote to many medical schools asking for admission(准许、进入). Most didn?t even reply, and several of the ones that did were very unfriendly. Friends suggested that she dress up as a man to attend medical school, but Blackwell wanted to be accepted for what she was. Finally, a small medical college in New York said “yes”.Blackwell graduated in 1849 at the head of her class, and she became the first woman in the United States to receive a medical degree.
However, no American hospital would accept Doctor Blackwell, so she went to work in an European hospital. When she returned to the United States, she opened her own clinic(诊所). The clinic?s patients were very poor and few had ever seen a doctor before.
Blackwell worked at her clinic, wrote articles and made speeches teaching women about the need for exercise and clean air, and the importance of cleanliness. More than a million patients were treated at the clinic.
