20小题,满分40分) A

Kristy, 28, a cook in La Gross, often wondered what she’d do in a life -threatening situation. On August 29, 1997, she got her answer. While she was driving on a road a big truck hit its head on a pickup car. The pickup burst into flame . Kristy rushed out and ran to the pickup. Two farmers, Dean Bernhard, 51, and his brother Donald, 44, were inside.

When she got close, Kristy could see the unconscious driver. The other man was under the passenger seat. Said Kristy: “The smells were sickening. I was afraid the truck would blow up and kill us all”.

The driver of the big truck was struggling to open the passenger door. Kristy rushed to the driver’s side. Finally they opened the door. She reached in, seized the driver and, to her horror, felt her hands sink into his chest. She quickly dragged the man to safety on the roadside, then hurried back. As Kristy started down the ditch with the passenger, the pickup blew up. She jumped on top of him and they both rolled to safety.

When the police arrived a while later, Kristy started crying, “I want my mum.” In fact she cried for the next three months. Today, the two farmers, each the father of two 36. A. writers 37. A. sold 38. A. work out

P icture the scene: the battery on your mobile phone has run out. You can’t make any calls for help and no one can contact you. You are all alone —— well, not quite. Just reach into your pocket and take out a piece of sugar. Put it into the battery, wait a minute, and you are back on the phone.

Thanks to a group of American scientists, this situation could become real. Swadesh Chaud Huri and Derek Lovley have invented the “bacteria battery” powered by bacteria that eats sugar and turns it into electricity.

“This is a special organism,” Lovley said. “You can harvest enough electricity to power a cell phone battery for about four hours from a spoonful of sugar.”

In the past, bacteria batteries have been expensive and long-lasting. But this battery uses a more efficient bacteria that can turn 80 percent of sugar into electrical energy. This is 30 percent more than similar batteries can manage.

The bacteria battery could become as small as a household battery. It’s also cheap and stable, as sugar can be taken from waste and crops.

But the sugar to electricity process is slow. It could take weeks for the bacteria to digest a cup of sugar. An it produces “green-house” gases which pollute the environment.

The scientists understand there’s a lot more work to do. “It is still young,” said Lovley. “Where we are now is where solar power was 20 or 30 years ago.”

But he believe the battery could be used in scientific equipment at the bottom of the ocean. Other ideas include using sugar in the blood to run medical devices in the human body, and taking sugar from animal waste to provide energy to power homes in rural areas.

60.The underlined sentence in the passage means _________.

A. this invention still has much to be improved

B. we’ve used solar power for 20 or 30 years

C. solar power is out of date

D. we produce electricity from sugar in the same way as from solar power

A. The bacteria battery has been invented.

B. You make calls with the electricity made from sugar in a minute.

C.The bacteria battery has been made as small as a household battery.

into electrical energy.

A.80

B.30

C.50

Women work harder than men at university and get better degrees as a result, according to a study at Brunel University.

The research, which followed 200 students for four years, found that women consistently outperformed men in their studies even though they had started their courses with almost identical A-level grades.

An analysis of the results showed that while 65 percent of female graduates were awarded, only 35 percent of male graduates did as well. Girls are known to outperform boys at school, but this research showed that the trend continued at university.

Fiona Smith, who led the research, said, “The research shows that the difference has something to do with schools in general.”

“It also shows something about the inequality for working women in terms of pay and promotion. Women work harder at school, harder at university, and do better at both, but they still receive less pay.”

The research found that female students were more faithful, less likely to miss lectures, and more likely to believe that their marks reflected their abilities than male students. Female students were also more likely to ask for and receive support from their professors.

Women were also more likely to choose their universities because they liked the courses offered.

In contrast, men were more likely than women to miss lectures due to “other affairs”and “laziness”, and to believe that playing sports was an important part of university life.

Generally, people think that women’s success comes from more emphasis(强调) on coursework, but the research showed that female geographers at Brunel did better in their exams than in their coursework.

Dr Smith said, “Most women feel that getting good grades is the most important part of university life. They believe that they need to work harder in order to compete in the male-dominated(男性主导的) environment they will encounter at work. Good grades are viewed

as an “insurance policy”for success. Men, on the other hand, prefer going out and playing sports to academic work.”

“This research shows how important it is to get all young people working hard and teach them the value of higher education,” he said.

64. The research at Brunel University showed that women______.

A.did worse than men both at school and at university

B.got better grades than men

C.paid little attention to their courses

D.often missed classes

65. Which of the following about men is true according to the passage?

A.They work as hard as women

B.They spend as much time on courses as women

C.They play a lot more than women

D.They consider good grades to be an “insurance police” for success

66. We can infer from the results of the research that _____.

A.women do better both at school and at university

B.female students are more likely to ask for and receive support from their

professors.

https://www.360docs.net/doc/b64983244.html,pared with men, women are in an unfavorable condition in the male-dominant world

D.It’s easier for women to get rises in pay and promotion.

67. The main purpose of the research is to _____.

A.give the government some advice on higher education

B.show us some information about higher education

C.show the sex difference in higher education

D.make all students work hard and realize the importance of higher education

D

“Tear them apart!”“Kill the fool!”“Murder the referee(裁判)!”

These are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let’s not kid themselves. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real blood-shed(流血). Volumes have been written about the way words affect us. It has been shown that words having certain connotations(含义) may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider our usual humanistic behavior. I see the term “opponent(对手)” as one of those words. Perhaps the time has come to remove it from sports terms.

The dictionary meaning of the term “opponent”is “adversary”, “enemy”; “one who opposes your interests”. Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to treat that opponent as an enemy. At such times, winning may direct one’s intellect, and every action, no matter how unpleasant, may be considered understandable. I recall an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player’s request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player proceeded to rub his gloves across his wet T-shirt and then exclaimed. “Are they wet enough now?”

. In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the consequences that such a move might have on anyone in their way.

I have also witnessed a player reacting to his opponent’s international and illegal

blocking by deliberately hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play. Off the court, they are good friends. Does that make any sense? It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which departs from normal behavior.

Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated (提升) the game to the level where it belongs, thus setting an example to the rest of the sporting world. Replacing the term “opponent”with “associate” could be an ideal way to start.

The dictionary meaning of the term “associate”is “colleague”, “friend”, “companion”. Reflect a moment! You may soon see and possible feel the difference in your reaction to the term “associate” rather than “opponent.”

68. Which of the following statements best expresses the author’s view?

A.Unpleasant words in sports are often used by foreign athletes

B.Unfair judgments by referees will lead to violence on the sports field.

C.Aggressive behavior in sports can have serious consequences

D.The words people use can influence their behavior

69. Rough words are spoken during games because the players ____.

A.treat their rivals as enemies

B.can’t afford to be polite in fierce competition

C.are too eager to win

D.are usually short-tempered and easily offended

70. What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves?

A.He claimed that the referee was unfair.

B.He refused to continue the game

C.He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T-shirt

D.He angrily hit the referee with a ball

71. According to the passage, players in a game may _____.

A.kick the ball across the court with force

B.deliberately throw the ball at anyone blocking their way

C.keep on screaming and shouting throughout the game

D.lie down on the ground as an act of protest

Ice dancing developed from ballroom dancing, particularly the waltz, and was very popular in the early 1900s. It requires well-trained, exact footwork; conformity(协调) with one another’s steps; and a keen sense of timing and rhythm. Ice dancing differs from pairs skating in that ice dancers are restricted to lifts no higher than the man’s shoulders and there are no jumps. One skater must be on the ice at all times.

Ice dancing competitions are made up of three principal parts: compulsories, original dance, and free dance. In compulsories, partners must perform two dances selected by the ISU, for example, waltz, tango, or polka. Compulsories involve set patterns in which dancers perform and repeat steps at certain points around the arena(竞技场). Although the steps are predetermined, dancers are encouraged to interpret (display) them for artistic charming. Each compulsory dance counts for 15 percent of a pair’s final score.

The original dance, formerly known as the original set pattern dance, requires skaters to design their own performance to their choice of music, set to a speed and rhythm previously announced by the ISU. It counts for 35 percent of the final score, and skaters receive marks

for composition and presentation. In the free dance, the partners perform a dance to music of their choice. They are given marks for presentation and style as well as for technical value. This dance counts for 50 percent of the final score.

72. The best title for this passage would be _____.

书面表达 With the National College Entrance Examination drawing near, all the students wish to succeed in it so as to realize their dreams. But there are some students who, instead of devoting their time to their study, go to the temple and pray for good luck. They think success results from good luck, upon which whether they can be admitted into their dream universities mainly depends.

However, others insist that diligence is the mother of good luck. Only by hard work can they achieve what they want. Even though they fail sometimes, they don ’t give up, because they believe success lies in their own hands.

As for me, I ’m in favor of the latter opinion. Luck doesn ’t come alone. It goes hand in hand with hard work.. Sometimes some students are lucky enough to succeed, but such luck won ’t last long because it is not based on their own abilities. 76__had 去掉__ 77 where_ 78__English__ 79___on___
