Chapter1.Body language-Reading

(Reading section )

very quickly in order to get the general idea of the reading. When we skim, we skip the unimportant parts. Therefore, when we skim, we usually only look at titles and headings, pictures and diagrams, and important sentences (usually the first and last sentences of a paragraph) in the reading. Skimming takes only a minute or two, and it helps us get the general outline of the reading and follow the writer’s idea more easily. It is a way to prepare

us for a better and detailed understanding of the writer’s ideas.

2)What is scanning?

Scanning is a reading strategy. When we scan a piece of reading, we read it very quickly in order to get specific or single pieces of information. So we scan to get information about time, names, places and numbers, etc. When we scan, we always skip the irrelevant parts and we only focus on what we need to find out.

English Manners

the day o r in the evening. “How do you do?”

Some forms of greeting which are good manners in China are not considered so in Britain or some other English-speaking countries. For example, usually we should avoid greeting a foreign friend by saying “ Where are you going?” or “Where have you been?”, which are quite common among friends in China. If we did ask either of these questions, the foreign friend would think that we were asking about his private affairs. Neither should we greet a foreigner by saying

“Have you had your dinner?”. He might think you were inviting him to dinner! These forms of greeting are only acceptable when they are used with close friends.

In most English-speaking countries shaking hands is also a form of greeting,

and the best kind of handshake is gentle and firm. Close friends or relatives,

on the other hand, usually do not shake hands with each other; they often exchange a quick kiss on the cheek when they meet or part. Men, however, don’t often kiss or embrace when greeting each other.

Men still tend to open doors for women in public. However, some young girls

cannot stand that. Nowadays more and more women are opening doors for men! Good manners are made up of many small things. Foreign friends or colleagues can get very upset if we forget to say or do something properly. This can be clearly

shown through the following example.

One day, on the desk of a department office in a college, lay a letter for

a visiting American professor. Her Chinese colleague happened to pass by. She saw it, picked it up, and later gave it to the American profess or, saying, “ Mrs Willis, a letter for you from your hometown.” To her surprise, the visiting

about English manners. The native speakers around talking and acting. English books, TV programmes

we must try our best to learn more about English manners and people’s ways of life so that we can communicate with foreigners more properly.

B. Scanning: Scan the text and answer the following questions.

In what situation(s) is each of the following used?

●“Hello.”, “Hi.”

●“How are you?” , “How are you doing?”

●“How do you do?”

高中英语阅读理解专项练习(1)附参考答案 阅读理解-----C At a recent class, yoga instructor Hagen taught several facial exercises designed to build up facial muscles. Some women practise moves including "The Lion" , showing the tongue hanging out and eyes rolled up.Hagen encourages class members to hold the position for 60 seconds, joking."You can do this any time.It really helps you get a seat on the train." Hagen recently published a book—The Yoga Face: Remove Wrinkles (皱纹)with the Ultimate Natural Facelift. She developed a workshop using facial yoga because women wanted to look their best. Hagen recommends facial yoga for those wanting to find outer and inner beauty, saying, "The emotional aspect is just as important as the physiological (生理学的)." American Music Styles James Fenimore Cooper, an early American writer, once said, "The Americans are almost ignorant of the art of music." If that was once true, you would never know it today. Most Americans--even those without a musical bone in their bodies--have a favorite style of music. Many people enjoy classical and folk music from around the world. But other popular music styles in America were "made in the U.S.A." Country and western music lies close to the heart of many Americans. This style originated among country folks in the southern and western United States. Country music tells down-to-earth stories about love and life ′s hardships. Guitars, banjos and violins give country music its characteristic sound. The home of country music is Nashville, Tennessee--Music City U.S.A. Jazz music, developed by African-Americans in the late 1800s, allows performers to freely express their emotions and musical skill. ①Instead of just playing the melody, jazz musicians improvise different tunes. The peak of jazz music came in the 1920s. This period produced musicians like Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. Different styles of jazz developed in different cities, ②such as New Orleans, Chicago, New York and Kansas City. ③The 1950s saw the development of an explosive new music style: rock ′n ′roll. This powerful music style addresses issues like love, sex, drugs, politics and death. Often it rebels against the accepted values of society. Rock concerts, featuring loud music and sometimes weird stage acts, have become a major part of American youth culture. Music videos on television have spread the message of rock to the far corners of the globe. And the beat goes on. Pop music represents popular styles that have wide appeal. 关系代词有that, which, who, whom, whose,as等;关系副词有when, where, why等。 The car which my uncle had just bought was destroyed in the earthquake.句中,the car 为先行词;which是关系词引导是定语从句which my uncle had just bought,同时代替先行词the car在定语从句中作主语。 1. that指人时,相当于who或whom;指物时,相当于which。 He said he was a Frenchman,which/as was not true. As is known to all,China is a socialist country. China is a socialist country, as/which is known to all. 2. I don't know the foreigner with whom my teacher shook hands.(或I don't know the foreigner whom my teacher shook hands with.)

Maybe it is true that we don't know what we have got until we lose it, but it is also true that we don't know what we have been missing until it arrives. Giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they will love you back, Don't expect love in return; but if it does not, be content it grew in yours. It takes an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone. Don't rely on one's appearance ; it can deceive. Don't rely on wealth; even that fades away. Rely on someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them. Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do. May you have enough happiness to make you sweet enough trials to make you strong enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy. Always put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts others, too. The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness waits for those who cry, those who have been hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tried, for only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You can't go on well in life until you let your past failures and heartaches go off. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you are the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying。

Unit 1 Living well Marty’s story Hi, my name is Marty Fielding and I guess you could say that I am “one in a million.”In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can’t run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don’t know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live one day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don’t look any different from other people. So sometim es some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who can not see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year I invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don’t feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don’t ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as rich and full a life as you do. Thank you for reading my story. Unit 2 Robots Larry Belmont worked for a company that made robots. Recently it had begun experimenting with a household robot. It was going to be tested out by Larry’s wife, Claire. Claire didn’t want the robot in her house, especially as her husband would be absent for three weeks, but Larry persuade her or allow her to be harmed. It would be a bonus. However, when she
