Dream in Heart

On the first day of school our professor introduced a new classmate—a wrinkled little old lady—to us. Her name was Rose, and she was eighty-seven years old.

After class Rose and I walked to the Student Union Building and shared a chocolate

milk-shake. She told me she always dreamed of having a college education and now she was getting one. We became instant friends. Every day for the following months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always attracted, listening to this “ time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Rose became famous and easily made friends wherever she went. She tended to be highly motivated, responsible, and deeply involved in class participation. In spare time she had someone hang out or go to bars with. She even participated in some form of athletic activity. She said that extra-curricular activities can form a vital part of her experience, creating unique chances for friendship and learning.

At the end of the term we invited Rose to speak at our football meal. A little embarrassed, she leaned into the microphone and simply said, “ I’ m sorry I’ m so nervous.” As we laughed, she

cl eared her throat and began, “ We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you’ re nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year, you will turn twe nty. If I’ m eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year, I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. It’ s non-optional but that doesn’ t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the chance in change. In this way th e elderly don’ t have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.” Rose concluded her speech by courageously singing “ The Rose” . She challenged us to study the words of the song and lived them out in daily lives.

At the year’ s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in honor of the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’ s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

A.she was a great football fan

B.she was the smartest student

D.she became more educated than the others

26.We can learn that Rose agreed with the idea that ______.

A.growing older means growing up

B.it takes talent and ability to grow up

C.receiving high education helps to be courageous

D.one grows older at the same time when he grows up

27.The passage is intended to ______.

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and pleasure. We use it to learn a new language. We find advice on it. We use it to connect with family and friends. We use it to stay in touch with events we care about. The list goes on and on.

As far as the Internet being a part of our lives, — well, that train has left the station. There is no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure (血压) in a young group: teenagers.

The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week only online may cause high blood pressure, which makes your heart and blood vessels (血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases your risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and other diseases.

The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy web use with high blood pressure.

The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy Bush row. She said, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn’t ruin us.” Ms. Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to stop to have a rest regularly from their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents shouldn’t let their children use the Internet for more than two hours a day, five days a week.

28.What does the underlined part “that train has left the station.” mean in paragraph 2?

A.the train has stopped at the wrong station

B.life without the Internet is nowhere to be found

C.the train has changed its course

D.there is something wrong with the station

29.What is Para. 3 mainly about?

A.The advantages of Internet use. B.The harm of high blood pressure.

C.The disadvantages of Internet use. D.Ways to prevent high blood pressure. 30.Andrea CassidyBushrow would agree that ________.

A.teenagers shouldn’t use the Internet

B.the Internet will ruin human life in the future

C.regular breaks are necessary when using the Internet

D.smartphones are more harmful than computers

31.What can be used as the best title of the passage?

A.Heavy Internet users are mostly teenagers.

B.How to prevent teenagers from the Internet.

C.Every coin has two sides - so does the Internet.

Sharpshooters refer to those who are skilled at firing a gun and accurately hitting what they are aiming at. However, some fish are also called amazing sharpshooters. People wonder how they hit their targets without using tools? By spitting! The fish shoot so accurately that they rarely miss their target.

These amazing fish are archerfish (印度射水鱼).There are several different types of archerfish living in Southeast Asia. They spit at their dinner to catch it. To catch dinner, a fish first sets itself in a certain place, for example just below the surface of the water. It puts the tip of its mouth so it barely breaks through the water. Then, the fish waits for an unsuspecting insect to land on a leaf or branch hanging over the water.

When an unsuspecting, or unknowing insect lands, the fish attacks. The fish squeezes its gill (腮)covers very rapidly, which forces water into the fish's mouth. In the roof of its mouth the fish has a groove (槽)?The fish forms the small groove and its tongue into a narrow tube by pressing its tongue up against its groove. The water forced into the fish's mouth is forcefully pushed out of the fish's moulh through the tube. Archerfish have been known to send a stream up to 5 meters (16

feet). However, archerfish can only shoot insects up to 1-2 meters (3-6 feet) away due to their limited accuracy.

When the unsuspecting insect is hit with a sudden stream of water, it is knocked into or falls into the water. Once in the water, the insect becomes dinner. Archerfish learn how to spit when they are young. They get more accurate with practice. Adult archerfish rarely miss.

Within a meter, archerfish will often spring out of the water and grab an insect in their mouths. 32.Paragraph 1 flinctions as a(n) .

A.background. B.comment. C.explanation. D.introduction.

33.Which of the following is the right steps of archerfish’s hunting for an insect?

a. It has its tongue pressed against the roof of its mouth.

b. It gathers water into its mouth by squeezing its gill covers quickly.

c. It shoots a stream of water at the insect above water.

d. It stays underwater for an insect to land nearby.

A.adcb B.dbac C.dbca D.adbc

34.If an insect is 3 feet away, an archerfish will often to catch it.

A.jump out of the water B.spit a kind of oily liquid

C.shoot a stream of water at it D.push its tongue out of its mouth 35.Archerfish can’t hit insects 5 meters away for the reason that .

A.their eyesight is limited

B.they can’t hit faraway insects precisely

C.their mouths are under the surface of water

D.the longest distance they can hit is at most 5 meters

Whoever wrote the song “it’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” must have never experienced Holiday blues. Fortunately, psychological research suggests some effective ways you can beat the holiday blues. The key point is that sadness and other tough emotions are not what we should try to avoid. 36.. Here are four strategies to help you make your own happiness recipe this holiday season.

Don’t force cheer

At family gatherings with cousins you secretly can’t stand, you tend to put on a happy face. Indeed, that might even seem like the most mature response—no drama, no conflict. But a 2011 study followed dozens of bus drivers, looking to see when they gave forced or honest smiles at their passengers. The results showed when the drivers pretended to have a good mood, their actual moods got worse. 37.

Let off sadness

The results of the bus-driver study can be explained by researchers, who find that negative feelings like sadness or anger only increase when we try to control them. 38.. We don’t like contradictory behavior.

Respond cautiously

Recently, scientists have been paying special attention to the benefits of caution. When you respond cautiously to an emotional trigger (e.g. overcooking the holiday turkey), you pause rather than reacting at once. 39.. Besides, it is associated with less anxiety, and may even carry physiological benefits.

40.

Of course, the holidays will bring a mix of highs and lows, but the most important lesson to keep in mind is that this variety of emotions might be the best thing possible for your overall

well-being. In other words, sadness, anger, and other difficult emotions are nothing to fear. Just make sure you’re balancing them with lighter experiences. And don’t forget to give yourself a break.

A.Relax your mind

B.Enjoy a mix of emotions

C.We tend to deny the important function emotions serve

D.Instead, they can help contribute to a healthy and happy life

E. So trying to force happiness seems to have the opposite effects

F. A cautious response to a negative event reduces sadness we experience

G. We feel bad when our appearance contradicts how we truly feel inside

And while your parents’ or grandparents’ generations may disap prove of your smartphone “addiction”, there are some positive aspects of using the Internet. One of them is online friendships. With the popularity of technology among teens, it’s understandable that more and more often people are connecting online. It’s e asy to find girls (or guys) with similar interests as you. Some people feel embarrassed to admit that they have very real online friendships. But it’s not something to be ashamed of and a friendship should not be discounted because it was formed online. If they don’t feel safe, or feel embarrassed, they can easily log off or block the person they were speaking with. Brain implant lets man with paralysis move and feel with his hand. A brain implant has restored movement and a sense of touch in the hand of a man with a severe spinal cord injury.Patrick Ganzer at Battelle Memorial Institute in the US and his colleagues have developed a brain-computer interface(BCI)that(21)______(allow)28-year-old Ian Burkhart to grasp and feel objects again. Burkhart has a severe upper spinal cord injury and has complete paralysis in his hands and legs,(22)______ can move his elbows and shoulders. He had a brain implant inserted in2014as part of research aiming to restore movement in(23)______right arm. The BCI uses the implant(24)______(record)brain activity that is sent to a processor that decodes these signals into movements, which in turn feed in to bands around the forearm which electrically activate his hand muscles. “We’ve made a lot of progress in the last six years:he can play[the video game]Guitar Hero, swipe a credit card and do about20different hand grips,”says Ganzer. But because Burkhart had no sensation in his hands,he previously had no sense of touch or pressure when(25) ______(grasp)objects,and if blindfolded, was not able to detect small objects such as a pencil. The researchers discovered that(26)______Burkhart’s hand cannot feel anything, the brain implant stills registers a faint sensory signal when he touches an object. They boosted this signal by incorporating a band around the bicep which vibrates when Burkhart’s hand receives sensory information. As a result,Burkhart is able to detect objects by touch alone. The BCI is also able to detect different levels of touch and adjust the strength of Burkhart’s hand movements depending on the object–a light grasp, for example, for a paper cup. The researchers believe it is the first BCI(27)______can simultaneously restore movement and touch. When the brain implant was inserted,it(28)______(intend)solely for controlling movement, but the(29)______(add) touch is possible because there is some overlap(30)______the sensory and motor areas in Burkhart’s brain, says Ganzer.
