地球上水的总储存量约1.39×1018m3,但除去海洋等咸水资源外,只有2.53%为淡水,可利用的淡水资源更是匮乏,只有淡水总量的0.31%。
随着经济和工业生产的飞速发展,水资源的供求关系严重失衡,缺水已经成为全世界面临的主要问题,制约着很多国家的可持续发展。
水足迹评估可以为解决水资源短缺、水资源供需矛盾及水资源配置等提供理论和技术上的支持。
造纸行业是典型的经济循环和可持续发展行业,同时也是水资源消耗和排污量较大的行业。
我国造纸行业主要集中在黄淮海平原、长江中下游和东南沿海三个地区[1]。
其中,黄淮海平原是我国水资源供求矛盾最突出的地方,水资源的严重短缺成为制约该地区造纸行业可持续发展的重要因素。
长江中下游和东南沿海地区虽然水资源比较丰富,但由于该地区水污染程度高,水质出现了很严重的危机现象,阻碍了造纸行业的快速发展。

在他就任加纳大学校长之前,他是华盛顿布鲁金斯学院的高级研究员和非洲自主发展机构的负责人。
同时,在2003—2010年他还曾任加纳大学统计学、社会学和经济学研究机构的负责人。
Aryeetey教授分别于1968—1973、1973—1975在Achimota学校和Presbyterian男子中等学校受教育。
1975—1978年他在加纳大学学习了经济学和统计学,在1979—1981年他在库玛西科技大学的区域计划中获得了硕士学位,1985年他在德国Dortmund大学获得了工学博硕学位。
