Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements with four choices. Choose the best answer and blacken the letter of your choice on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Technology, entrepreneurship (创业能力) and innovations are keywords that sum up the new era.The Internet is not just a technology, it is also about marketing. Companies which do not use the Net as a marketing tool will lose their competitiveness. The function of information technology in marketing is more than just receiving orders on the Net. The Net offers a means of attracting clients by providing them information, something not possible in the past. It has changed the way of service and is more efficient and more capable of providing comprehensive customer service. The Net has revolutionized the way companies are run. Electronic mail, for instance, has improved management efficiency tremendously. The traditional telephone conversations and face-to-face contacts could be easily interrupted and were inefficient. Now you need perhaps to spend just a couple of hours on e-mailing. Besides, it is now much easier to gather information to help make the right decision. The New Economy has also led to the mushrooming of IT or Internet-related firms as though the mere setting up of such a company is a guarantee of high profits. This means businesses must have good human resource management practices so as not to lose talented employees.Technology is a tool and a change in mindset (思想的形式)is required to do away with a hierarchical (分等级的) system. This is related to entrepreneurship and innovations. What is needed are people who can think independently. A flat organization reduces the layers of management. This is absolutely fine if everyworker is capable of thinking and working on his own. But there are many who feel insecure when they can no longer rely on others. They will have to learn new mode of thinking.16. According to the passage, if a company wants to win in the market, itshould ______ .A. carry out reform policiesB. adopt advanced technologyC. compete with other enterprisesD. use the Internet as its market17. In marketing, the use of the Internet can help businesses to _________ .A. identify their competitorsB. improve their productsC. provide comprehensive serviceD. change their mindset18. What is the largest benefit the Net has brought to the management ofcompanies?A. It has brought the largest profits to them.B. It has greatly improved their management.C. It has helped cut short their human resources.D. It has significantly changed their image.19. From the passage we may say mat _______ .A. any Internet-related firm is sure to make high profitsB. the development of IT is one of the results of the New EconomyC. businesses will lose talented employees if they do not use the InternetD. a hierarchical system is good for developing new technology20. What is the author's attitude towards the flat organization without ahierarchical system?A. IndifferentB. NegativeC. NeutralD. PositivePassage 2A folk culture is a small, isolated, cohesive, conservative, nearly self-sufficient group that is homogeneous in custom and race, with a strong family or clan structure and highly developed rituals. Order is maintained through sanctions based in the religion or family, and interpersonal relationships are strong. Tradition is paramount, and change comes infrequently and slowly. There is relatively little division of labor into specialized duties. Rather, each person is expected to perform a great variety of tasks, though duties may differ between the sexes. Most goods are handmade, and a subsistence economy prevails. Individualism is weakly developed in folk culture, as are social classes. Unaltered folk cultures no longer exist in industrialized countries such as the United State and Canada. Perhaps the nearest modern equivalent in Anglo America is the Amish, a German American farming sect mat largely renounces the products and labor saving devices of the industrial age. In Amish areas, horse-drawn buggies still serve as a local transportation device, and the Faithful are not permitted to own automobiles. The Amish's central religious concept of Demut, "humility", clearly reflects the weakness of individualism and social classto typical of folk cultures, and there is a corresponding strength of Amish group identity. Rarely do the Amish marry outside their sect. The religion, a variety of the Mennonite faith, provides the principal mechanism for maintaining order.By contrast, a popular culture is a large heterogeneous group, often highly individualistic and constantly changing. Relationships tend to be impersonal, anda pronounced division of the labor exists, leading to the establishment of many specialized professions. Secular institutions of control such as the police and army take the palace of religion and family in maintaining order, and a money-based economy prevails. Because of these contrasts, "popular" may be viewed as clearly different from "folk". The popular is replacing the folk in industrialized countriesand in many developing nations, folk-made objects give way to their popular equivalent, usually because the popular item is more quickly or cheaply produced,is easier or time saving to use, or lends more prestige to the owner.21. What does the passage mainly discuss?A. Two decades in modern society.B. The characteristics of "folk" and "popular" societies.C. The influence of industrial technology.D. The specialization of labor in Canada and the United States.22. The word "homogeneous" in line 2 is closest in meaning to ____________ .A. traditionalB. generalC. primitiveD. uniform23. Which of the following is typical of folk cultures?A. There is a money-based economy.B. Contact with other cultures is encouraged.C. Social change occurs slowly.D. Each person develops one specialized skill.24. Which of the following statements about Amish beliefs does the passage support?A. Pre-modern technology is preferred.B. Individualism and competition are important.C. A variety of religious practices is tolerated.D. People are defined according to their class.25. Which of the following would probably not be found in a folk culture?A. A carpenter.B. A farmer.C. A banker.D. A weaver.Passage 3As parents, we want our children to reach their full academic potential, We readto them, encourage their special talents, and support them when they have problems. If they choose to participate in sports or music, we also help them reach theirpotential in those areas. These are all good goals. There is, however, an even more important goal. It is a goal more difficult than excellence in arithmetic or soccer or the violin. Parents are responsible for providing their children with a moral compass. They need to nurture and treasure goodness in their children. Every child has the capacity to become a good, decent human being. To fulfill this capacity, children need the guidance and support of parents and other adults. Raising good, moral children is the most important job we will have. What is a good, decent human being? While we may differ on some details, most would agree that respect for others, kindness and caring, honesty and honor, and a reverence (尊重) for life are key. Good, decent human beings are people with a firm sense of direction and purpose - a moral compass - to guide their lives. Children need our helps to develop these characteristics and values. While most people try to act with honor and kindness, doing so consistently is difficult and requires lifelong effort. Goodness is not easy for an adult, and it is even more difficult for a child. They don't have the knowledge, experiences, or cognitive skills to understand the impact and consequences of their actions.Reinforcement is sometimes an efficient approach to building positive behavior. The child behaves in a desired way and the parents provide reinforcement. The behavior then typically increases in frequency. This approach works for teaching "Please" and "Thank you". The new behavior is maintained, because it helps the child get along in the world.Loving, everyday interactions are the beginning of raising moral children. The child who falls and receives adult concern learns how to treat others kindly when they stumble. The child who makes a mistake and is encouraged to try again learns how to support others. When parents intercede (调解)graciously for their child, the child can see the basis for friendship. When we treat children with respect and care, we provide a positive model of how to behave. These early experiences establish patterns for their treatment of others.26. To provide their children with a moral compass, adults should ____________ .A. encourage their children to learn more knowledge about sports ormusicB. encourage their children to be a man with high integrityC. support their children when they have problemsD. set a good example and give positive instructions to children27. According to the author, people with a moral compass are the kind ofpeople who __________ .A. can reach their full academic potentialB. can lead a decent lifeC. know what to do and why to do itD. have developed characteristics and values such as respect for others28. Why does the author talk about teaching "please" and "thank you" ?(Line 4, Paragraph 5)A. To demonstrate that saying "please" and "thank you" is a good habit.B. To demonstrate that politeness is the nature of a moral compass.C. To demonstrate that politeness helps the children get along in the world.D. To demonstrate that reinforcement is an efficient approach to buildingpositive behavior.29. Which of the following can express the main idea of this passage?A. Adults should treat children with love.B. Adults should have more positive communication with children.C. Adults should treat children with respect and care.D. Adults should provide a positive model of how to behave for children.30. Which of the following can serve as the best title for this passage?A. How to Make Your Child an Academically Excellent Student.B. How to Explore Your Child's Potential.C. How to Mold a Moral Child.D. How to Make Your Child a Versatile Student.Passage 4Is nothing sacred? Even the idle weekend pastime of skimming stones on a lake has been taken apart and reduced to mathematical formula.Everyone knows a stone bounces best on water if it's round and flat, and spun towards the water as fast as possible. Some enthusiasts even travel to international stone-skimming competitions, like world champion Jerdone Coleman-McGhee, who made the stone bounce 38 times on Blanco River, Texas, in 1992.Intuitively, a flat stone works best because a relatively large part of its surface strikes the water, so there is more bounce. Inspired by his eight-year-old son, physicist Lyderic Bocquet of Lyon University in France wanted to find out more. So he tinkered with some simple equations describing a stone bouncing on water in terms of its radius, speed and spin and taking account of gravity and the water drag. The equations showed that the faster spinning stone is traveling, the more times it will bounce. So no surprise there. To bounce at least once without sinking, Bocquet found the stone needs to be traveling at a minimum speed of about 1 km/h.And the equations also backed his hunch that spin is important because it keeps the stone fairly flat from one bounce to the next. The spin has a gyroscopic effect, prevent the stone from tipping and falling sideways into the water. To match the world record of 38 bounces using 10-centimetre-wide stone, Bocquet predicts it would have to be traveling at about 40kms/h and spinning at 14 revolutions a second. He adds that drilling lots of small pits in the stone would probably help, by reducing water drag in the same way that dimpks on a golf ball reduce air drag. "Although I suppose that would be cheating," says Bocquet, whose report will appear in the American Journal of Physics. He and his team at Lyon hope to design a motorized "catapult" that can throw stones onto a lake with a precise speed and spin, to test if the predictions stand up.Bocquet adds that he is probably just rediscovering a piece of history. British engineer Barnes Wallis must have done the same sort of maths and experiments when he was designing his famous bouncing bombs for the Dambusters squadron during the Second World War.31. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?A. International Stone-skimming CompetitionsB. How to Make Stone-skimming More EnjoyableC. Stone-skimming Is a Sacred ThingD. The mathematical Formula for Stone-skimming32. In order to make a stone bounce best on water, one needs to _________ .A. find a big round stoneB. reduce the spin of the stoneC. make the stone spin as fast as possibleD. do some complicated mathematical equations33. According to Lyderic Bocquet, which of the following is not mentioned as afactor influencing the bounces of a stone on water?A. The clearness of the water.B. The gravity of the earth.C. The shape of the stone.D. The speed of the spin.34. Lyderic Bocquet drilled lots of small pits in the stone in order to __________ .A. make it look smarterB. reduce the water dragC. increase the revolution of the stoneD. make the game more like golf35. Lyderic and his team hope to design a motorized catapult because ___________ .A. they want to make the experiment to be more sacredB. a British engineer did his experiment this wayC. human beings can't ensure the speed and spin speedD. they wanted to rediscover a piece of historyPaper TwoPart III. Translation (40 minutes, 25 points)Section A (20 minutes, 10 points)Directions: Translate the following passage into Chinese. Write your Chinese version on the Answer Sheet.Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship(党派纷争) and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House —a party founded on the values of self-reliance, individual liberty and national unity. Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with ameasure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. In this country, we rise or fall as one nation — as one people.Section B (20 minutes, 15 points)Directions: Translate the following passage into English. Translation Skills(12): Subordinate Clauses(c) Adverbial Clauses
Adverbial clauses
English adverbial clauses include adverbials of time, place, cause, condition, concession, purpose, result, and so on. Generally speaking, these adverbial clauses do not pose any obstacle to either comprehension or translation, and the point is how to conform the translations to Chinese usage, especially how to arrange them properly. And another point for attention is how to omit the unnecessary conjunctive words when English adverbial clauses are translated into Chinese.
(1)她不老实,我不能信任她。
Since she is not honest, I cannot trust her.
