1

M: So what time are you going to be at the Berkeley subway station, Maria?

W: I should be there by 1:00 p.m., but there is a chance that I might not get there 1 1:20 or so.

M: You’ll be coming from San Francisco, right?

W: That’s right. I finish my morning job at 12:00, but it usually 2 (take) me 20 or 30 minutes to walk to the 3 (near) subway station. I’ll call you when I’m on the 4 so you don’t have to wait around too long.

M: OK. My car is 5 white Ford, and I’ll park somewhere in plain view so you will be able to see me 6 (easy). What time do you need to be at your afternoon job?

W: Usually 3:00 p.m., 7 they want me to be there at 2:30 p.m. today.

M: How long does it take to drive from the Berkeley station to your afternoon job?

W: Oh, 8 takes me ten minutes at the most. I really appreciate you 9 (help) me out while my car is getting 10 (repair), so I’d love to treat you to lunch. There is a burger place right across the street.

2

W: Martin! Do you know what time 1 is?

M: Uh, no.

W: It’s already 7:20! You’re going to be 2 for school!

M: But that’s impossible! I 3 (set) my alarm for 7 o’clock.

W: Well, maybe it’s broken. Right now, it doesn’t matter. You’ve got to wash your face, get 4 (dress), and come downstairs for breakfast. The bus will be here at 7:45. M: What’s for breakfast?

W: Porridge. I know you like to have eggs in 5 morning, but there just isn’t 6 time today.

M: Oh, man! Can’t I just...

W: No arguing! Move it!

M: OK, fine. I’ll be downstairs in a few minutes.

W: Don’t forget 7 (bring) your homework. It’s on the dining room table. Oh, and bring down your soccer uniform, please. I 8 (wash) it while you’re at school, and I’ll bring it in the car 9 I pick you up this afternoon.

M: Is Dad going to collect me from practice?

W: Yes, I already talked to him about it. Oh, 10 the wa y, we’re going out for pizza tonight.

M: Hello! Welcome to Downtown Brown’s. What 1 I get for you?

W: I think I’ll have the garden salad.

M: Would you like anything 2 ?

W: What’s the soup of the day?

M: We have two choices today. The first is beef with vegetables. It’s really delicious, 3 it has only 150 calories. The other option is cream of mushroom. It’s vegetarian, and it’s one of our most popular soups.

W: I think I 4 (have) the first one.

M: Do you want to try our half and half special? You get a half bowl of soup with a half salad or sandwich plus a drink for only $6.50, 5 (include) tax. It’s a good amount of food at a very reasonable 6 .

W: That is a pretty good deal. Yeah, I’ll have the special 7 a Diet Coke, please.

M: OK. And is that for here or to go?

W: For here.

M: OK, your total is $6.50.

W: Here’s 7 bucks. Keep8 change!

M: Thank you very much! Just take a seat 9 you’d like and listen for Number 85.10 should be ready in two minutes.

4

W: Are you finding everything OK, sir?

M: 1 (actual), I can’t seem to be able to find jam. It’s not over here with the other canned goods.

W: Jams and jellies can be found in Aisle 3, right down there toward 2 other end of the store.

M: Thank you. Oh, I noticed that there is a sale on Bobby’s frozen pizzas right now, but it looks like there aren’t any 3 (leave) in the freezer. Are there any 4 (much) in the back, by any chance?

W: I’m not sure. Let me take a look, all right?

M: Th anks. I’ll just wait right here....

W: I’m sorry, sir, but 5 looks like we are sold out of that particular brand. We should be getting some more 6 tonight or tomorrow morning, 7 .

M: Oh, that’s OK. I can come back another time. I’m not really cr azy about that kind of stuff, but

I do love a good 8 !

W: Well, 9 that case, you might want to check out the bread sale in Aisle 4. Most brands are buy one, get one free, and that 10 (include) the homemade breads that we make in our own bakery!

M: Thanks for the tip! I’ll head over there right now.

W: Have a good day, sir!

M: Let me ask you a question, Mrs. Dawson. How often do you exercise?

W: Well, I walk down to the ice cream shop with my husband about once 1 week or so. M: What 2 on the weekends? Do you ever play sports or go 3 (hike) in the mountains, anything like 4 ?

W: Not really, Dr. Tibbets. We usually just 5 (hang) out around the house and watch movies or barbecue on the weekends.

M: Have you ever thought about joining a gym?

W: Oh, those are for young people. I never see anyone my age in those places.

M: Well, Mrs. Dawson, your blood 6 and your percentage of body fat are both rather high.

I’d like to see you get out more,7 it’s just for 30 minutes a day. You have to do something about your health, Mrs. Dawson. 8 , it will continue to get worse.

W: OK, OK, I guess I 9 make my husband take a walk with me after dinner every night.

And we used to like swimming in the lake on weekends, so maybe we can do that, too.

M: Those are great ideas, Mrs. Dawson. And I would also encourage you to eat more fruits and vegetables and 10 (little) meat.

W: No way! Now you’re talking crazy, Doc!

6

W: Hey, Brandon. I’m doing a project on families for school. 1 I ask you some questions? M: Sure.

W: Do you have any brothers or sisters?

M: I have one older sister. She’ll be 30 this year. She’s six years 2 (old) than me.

W: What’s she 3 ?

M: She is super smart. She was always the best student in her class at school. Now, she is in 4 school. She’s going to be a doctor.

W: What does she do when she isn’t studying?

M: She loves hiking and camping in the mountains. I could see her 5 (buy) a little house in

6 middle of nowhere and just disappearing. She also used to be a dancer, but ever since she

7 (start) medical school, she hasn’t had much time to focus on it.

W: What about her personality?

M: She has very strong opinions, and she can be pretty rude if she disagrees with someone

8 if she feels offended. I guess she is a bit selfish 9 , but she is also a really

interesting, creative person.

W: 10 sounds like you still look up to her.

M: Oh, without doubt!

M: So, Glen finally got the courage to ask Gina out, but he didn’t have any money, so he tried to hit me up for some.

W: How much did he ask you 1 ?

M: A hundred bucks! 2 was only a first date, but he said, “I really like her and I just want to make 3 good impression.” So, I 4 (lend) him the money and told him to pay me 5 within two weeks.

W: That sounds fair.

M: Yeah, but after two weeks went by, he said, “I already paid you that money, man.”

W: What? For real?

M: Y eah! 6 it were five bucks or something, then who cares? But it’s pretty easy7 (remember) if a hundred dollar loan is paid back or not, and he 8 (definite) did not give me one dime. W: So, what are you gonna do?

M: Well, he swears that he paid me. I don’t want to end our 9 over money, but I honestly don’t know what 10 to do.

8

W: So, tell me a little bit about your parents.

M: Well, my mom is Chinese and my dad is American, so I grew 1 speaking two languages.

They were really strict about my brother and I speaking both languages, and they both had different ideas of 2 we should be doing in our 3 time. But in the end, I think I turned out to be a more interesting person because of it.

W: What do your parents do?

M: My mother is a teacher, and my father works from home as a 4 (write). My dad was usually the one 5 (take) me to school, pick me up, and take care of me during the week, and my mom was around more during 6 weekend. I guess for most kids, it’s the other way around.

W: Would you say your relationship is 7 (good) with your mother or your father?

M: It’s hard to say. I’m close with both of them, but our relationships are definitely different.

What about 8 parents?

W: My dad basically 9 (raise) me by himself after my mom died. He’s a psychologist, and he works mostly 10 poor people. He is the kindest man I know.

M: Wow, he sounds like a real hero! I’d love to hear a story about him from when you were little. W: Well, there was this one time...

M: Hello. This is the manager 1 (speak). What seems to be the problem, madam?

W: Well, there is a huge bug in my shower. The towels were dirty when I came in. The TV doesn’t work, and there is 2 strange smell in here...

M: All right, madam. I do apologize. Perhaps the room was not serviced before you checked

3 . I’ll send up a housekeeper to take care of everything.

W: That’s not good enough. 4 you want a negative review of this place on every hotel web site on the 5 in the next 12 hours, I suggest you get me another room.

M: Well, madam, let me see what I 6 do. Could you hold on for a moment, please?

W: Sure...

M: Thank you for holding, madam. 7 appears that one of our VIP guests just 8 (cancel) his reservation in a corner suite, and I’d be happy to move you into that room. It has a living room, a pool table, and a balcony 9 a great view. How does that sound?

W: That sounds great!

M: I’ll send someone over to get your bags 10 (immediate).

10

W: 1 I help you, sir?

M: Yes, I’m looking for something for my 2 for Valentine’s Day.

W: The first thing to do is to pick out 3 kind of flowers you think she would like. Most women like getting roses on Valentine’s Day, but we actually have many colors besides the 4 (tradition) red ones. Look!

M: Oh, wow, I had no idea that roses 5 (come) in so many colors!

W: Do you know your wife’s favorite color?

M: She loves yellow. Other 6 that, I know she likes bright colors.

W: Well, we could choose some yellow, pink, and red roses.

M: I think those would look beautiful together.

W: OK. And we could add 7 few touches of green and white for variety... just like this.

What do you think?

M: She’ll love them!

W: Great. Do you want 8 (put) them in a vase?

M: Oh, we’ve got plenty of vases at home, but I would like to get her a box of chocolates.

W: We’ve got boxes of white, dark, and milk chocolates over here. This particular one has all 9 kinds.

M: Oh, yeah, let’s go 10 that one. Could you gift-wrap that for me?

M: All right, Miss. Please have a seat and state your full name.

W: Joanna Cardiff.

M: And what is your date of birth, Ms. Cardiff?

W: September 24, 1986.

M: Your 1 ?

W: 1865 Royal Road.

M: Are you employed?

W: I work 2 a waitress in a restaurant.

M: What were you doing at the time of the robbery?

W: I was just walking past the bank on my way to my friend’s house 3 I heard an alarm

4 (go off). The next thing I knew, I saw this guy run out of there. He had a mask over his

head and a gun in one hand and a bag in the 5 . He pointed the gun at me and shouted at me to get down. I did 6 he said, and he ran 7 .

M: Did you notice anything else about the suspect? His clothes? His height or weight? His hair color? W: I guess he was of medium build... he wasn’t too fat or too skinny or anything. He 8 (wear) black pants and black shoes, but that’s all I remember. I was pretty 9 (scare).

M: That’s all right. If you remember anything else, call 10 number on this card. Thanks for your time.

12

W: Good morning! Housekeeping!

M: Oh, just a moment, please... come on in.

W: Thank you, sir. I hope you had a good night’s 1 . I’ll just see if anything 2 (need) to be replaced in the bathroom to start, and then I’d be happy to change your sheets for you.

M: I think the sheets are still clean. 3 , I don’t want the hotel to use more water 4 is absolutely necessary for laundry.

W: That is very 5 (consider) of you, sir. How has your stay been so far?

M: Oh, 6 has been great. The service has been fantastic, and I really enjoyed my meal in the restaurant downstairs last night.

W: Yes, it is certainly 7 special spot. If you are looking for another place to go to tonight, the Oasis Restaurant around the corner is excellent.

M: Thank you for the recommendation! Oh, I do have one question — could I 8 (possible) have some shirts cleaned?

W: Of course, sir. How many shirts do you need washed?

M: Two.

W: OK, and when would you like them 9 (return)?

M: As soon as possible.

W: The standard service is 24 hours, but for a 50% extra fee, we can have them back to you 10 1 o’clock this afternoon.

M: Oh, great, thank you. I have a meeting at 3 o’clock, and I really want to look my best.

W: Do you have any plans for the vacation, Paul?

M: I really need 1 (earn) some money this summer because tuition is going up, and my parents are already giving me as much as they 2 .

W: So, where do you want to work?

M: I’ll probably end up working in a restaurant. With all the tourists 3 (come) in, the tips should be pretty good. 4 I’d really like to do is volunteer full-time, though, and I found the perfect organization, but it’s 5 (probable) not going to happen.

W: What’s the organization like?

M: Well, it’s a summer camp that 6 (teach) science to poor kids. It would be perfect for me: I love working with children, I know a lot about science, and I could help some people who really need it.

W: So, why don’t you work part-time at 7 restaurant and volunteer part-time at the summer camp?

M: That would be great, but I think the summer camp only wants full-time 8 .

W: Well, I think you should get 9 touch with them. I’m sure they would kill to have a guy like you helping them, even if 10 isn’t every day.

14

W: What are you reading?

M: A letter from my uncle. He wants me to work on his farm, but I don’t know if I’m cut out for physical labor.

W: I worked on a farm last year. It was 1 (exhaust). We had to get up at four in the morning and work until it got 2 six days a week.

M: Oh, that sounds terrible!

W: I did get a great tan, 3 , and I think I 4 (lose) thirty pounds! I also got to eat the best fruits and vegetables of my life.

M: That’s pretty cool, I guess. Did you end up 5 (make) any money?

W: A little, but not 6 . But you don’t do it for the money. I had always wanted to work on a farm, and I think I had this romantic idea of 7 it was going to be like. But it wasn’t like that 8 all, and I was done after one season. Y ou should really give it some 9 before you commit.

M: Well, I don’t want to do something for just one year. I’m ready to start my career. I don’t mind starting at the bottom and working my way up, but at some point, I want to be able to support

10 family.

W: Hey, Trevor!

M: Oh, hey, Cathy. I’m just 1 my way across town. I’m taking evening classes at City College.

W: Whoa, that’s pretty far! How are you going to get there?

M: By subway, of course!

W: Really? Isn’t the subway kind of dangerous at night?

M: No, not at all! Many people take the subway at night, so there are always a lot of people around, and there are security guards at every station.

W: I bet it’s super slow.

M: I 2 (actual) raced my friend to class once. He took 3 taxi and I took the subway. He had 4 (buy) me dinner that night because I got to class 5 (early) and I won!

W: It’s got to be expensive to take the subway, right?

M: Wrong again! It’s only three bucks each way, but 6 I’m a student, I 7 get half-price tickets!

W: Wow, that’s a real 8 ! How late do the trains run?

M: Well, that’s the one downside. The last train 9 (leave) at about 10:00 p.m., so 10 is pretty difficult to hang out with my friends after class.

W: So, do you take the subway to work, too?

M: Nope. I walk to work.

16

W: Let’s go to Hawaii for our vacation! I’ve heard that you can actually go hiking inside 1 volcano there!

M: Hmm, that sounds a bit too wild for me. 2 , it’s really expensive to fly there.

W: OK, what about Thailand? It’s cheap to fly there, and the beaches 3 (suppose) to be fantastic!

M: Yeah, but isn’t summer the wet season in Thailand?

W: Oh, I hadn’t thought about that.

M: Hey, I have an idea! Why don’t we go to Holland?

W: Holland? What is there to do over there?

M: Holland isn’t like 4 places in Europe. In Amsterdam, you 5 take boats around the city’s canals and ride bikes everywhere else! There are also many famous museums there, and the forest and the seaside are only a couple of hours 6 by train.

W: Well, that does sound nice, but I’m sure 7 is expensive to get there from here.

M: Actually, there are some amazing deals on flights to Europe right now. They really want 8 (encourage) tourists to go there.

W: Let’s go online and see how much it will cost. 9 we can find a good deal, we should buy our 10 and start planning right away.

M: Hey, you look a bit tired.

W: Well, I just got off 1 subway. It was super crowded, and I had to push past all the people coming into the train. I almost didn’t make it out!

M: Well, at least you 2 (make) it.

W: I was shouting, “Let me through, please!” But it was so packed that nobody 3 move. I think I’ll get a bicycle so I don’t have to put up with all that stress anymore.

M: Yeah, I ride my electric bike almost everywhere. It’s way 4 (fast) than public transportation.

W: Well, it’s also safer for you. You almost got 5 (beat) up on the subway the last time.

M: It was just an argument! 6 , that guy was silly.

W: I agree — he was very unpleasant. But he was a lot bigger than you.

M: Hey, I bumped into him by 7 , and he started shouting at me for no reason. What was I supposed to do? Apologize?

W: Guys like him aren’t worth 8 .

M: I know. He just better watch out 9 I ever see him again.

W: Oh, just drop it! Don’t waste your energy thinking about him.

M: All right. But it’s still nice to imagine 10 (take) revenge!

18

M: So, you’ve been traveling around America 1 bike for two years now?

W: Well, I’m a couple of days short of two years, actually.

M: That’s 2 (amaze)! Why did you decide to do this in the first place?

W: One day, I started volunteering at 3 environmental organization. I bought a new bike and started using it as my main means of 4 . I felt like it wasn’t enough, 5 , so I sold my car and used the money to start my trip.

M: Where have you been so far?

W: I 6 (start) out in Boston, but I’ve been to all the big cities: New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles... I even went to Washington D.C. and met President Obama!

M: How does it feel to be on your bike every day? I mean, it’s not like 7 (go) for a ride in the park. It’s 8 (much) like a job now, right?

W: It’s definitely challenging to put in so many miles every day, rain or shine, but I think that’s the point —it’s a sacrifice that I believe in. I think this country would be a better place 9 we rode our bikes more.

M: Do you think you’ll ever own a car again?

W: I don’t think so. 10 is just not a part of my old life that I want back.

M: Excuse me, m adam. I’m from Channel 8 News. Could I ask you a few questions?

W: Sure.

M: I noticed that you just 1 (come) out of that bank over there. Would you mind telling me

2 you think of the service there?

W: Well, to be honest, I’m not that crazy about it. I try to spend as little time as possible 3 (do) my banking, but for some reason, I always spend about 4 (two) as long as I would like 5 I go to the bank.

M: So why don’t you change banks?

W: It would involve so much paperwork and everything, so I have just stayed there all these years. 6 is not like my money isn’t safe or anything, so I don’t really have any good reason to leave. You have to keep your money somewhere, right?

M: What do you think about the recent financial crisis?

W: Well, I know the banks had a lot to do 7 it. I guess I’m one of the lucky ones —I didn’t lose my job, and my husband and I own our own house. But I certainly know a lot of people

8 weren’t so lucky. In 9 end, the people in power are going to do what they’re

going to do, and there isn’t a whole lot that regular folks 10 do about it.

20

W: Mr. Denton, what happened when you got to your office this morning?

M: I got a cup of coffee 1 usual, and then I went to my desk to check my email. That’s when I realized that my computer was 2 (miss).

W: What did you do next?

M: I looked 3 the office and noticed that some other computers were missing, too. I looked for my boss, but he wasn’t around.

W: Is he usually at work around that time?

M: Oh, yeah, he is the first one 4 (get) in every morning! That’s 5 it was sort of strange that he wasn’t there.

W: When was the last time you 6 (see) him?

M: Friday. I was at my desk until about 8:00 p.m., and my boss was still in his office. 7 I left, he was on the phone with someone important, so I didn’t want to disturb him.

W: About how many computers would you say were taken in all, Mr. Denton?

M: Well, there are about 250 8 (employ) on my floor, and most of the computers were 9 (go) from their desks. But our company owns four floors in the building, so it’s possible that even 10 (many) were taken.
