Passage One

What’s hot for 2007 among the very rich? A $7.3 million diamond r ing. A trip to Tanzania to hunt wild animals. Oh, and income inequali

ty. Sure, some leftish billionaires like George Soros have been raili ng against income inequality for years. But increasingly, centrist an d right-wing billionaires are starting to worry about income inequali ty and the fate of the middle class. In December, Mortimer Zuckerman wrote a column in U.S News & World Report, which he owns. “Our natio n’s core bargain with the middle class is disintegrating,” lamented (哀叹) the 117th-richest man in America. “Most of our economic gains have gone to people at the very top of the income ladder. Average inc ome for a household of people of working age,

第3/12页by contrast, has fallen five years in a row.” He noted that “Tens o f millions of Americans live in fear that a major health problem can reduce them to bankruptcy.” Wilbur Ross Jr. has echoed Zuckerman’s anger over the bitter struggles faced by middle-class Americans. “It’s an outrage that any American’s life expectancy should be shortened simply because the company they worked for went bankrupt and ended he alth-care coverage,” said the former chairman of the International S teel Group. What’s happening? The very rich are just as trendy as yo u and I, and can be so when it comes to politics and policy. Given th e recent change of control in Congress, popularity of measures like i ncreasing the minimum wage, and efforts by California’ governor to o ffer universal health care, these guys don’t need their own personal weathermen to know which way the wind blows. It’s possible that plut ocrats are expressing solidarity with the struggling middle class as part of an effort to insulate themselves from confiscatory tax polici es. But the prospect that income inequality will lead to higher taxes on the wealthy doesn’t keep plutocrats up at night. They can live w ith that. No, what they fear was that the political challenges of sus taining support for global economic integration will be more difficul t in the United States because of what has happened to the distributi on of income and economic insecurity. In other words, if middle-class Americans continue to struggle financially as the ultrawealthy grow ever wealthier, it will be increasingly difficult to maintain politic al support for the free flow of goods, services, and capital across b orders. And when the United States places obstacles in the way of for eign investors and foreign goods, it’s likely to encourage reciproca l action abroad. For people who buy and sell companies, or who alloca

te capital to markets all around the world, that’s the real nightmar

e.

16. What is the current topic of common interest among the very ri ch in America?

A) The fate of the ultrawealthy people. B) The disintegration of t he middle class.

C) The inequality in the distribution of wealth. D) The conflict b etween the left and the right wing.

17. What do we learn from Mortimer Zuckerman’s lamentation?

A) Many middle-income families have failed to make a bargain for b etter welfare.

B) The American economic system has caused many companies to go ba nkrupt.

C) The American nation is becoming more and more divided despite i ts wealth.

D) The majority of Americans benefit little from the nation’s gro wing wealth.

18. From the passage we can learn that ____________.

A) the very rich are fashion-conscious

B) the very rich are politically sensitive

C) universal health care is to be implemented throughout America

D) Congress has gained popularity by increasing the minimum wage

19. What is the real reason for plutocrats to express solidarity w ith the middle class?

A) They want to protect themselves from confiscatory taxation.

B) They know that the middle class contributes most to society.

C) They want to gain support for global economic integration.

D) They feel increasingly threatened by economic insecurity.

20. What may happen if the United States places obstacles in the w ay of foreign investors and foreign goods?

A) The prices of imported goods will inevitably soar beyond contro l.

B) The investors will have to make great efforts to re-allocate ca pital.

C) The wealthy will attempt to buy foreign companies across border s.

D) Foreign countries will place the same economic barriers in retu rn.

第4/12页Passage Two

He that has wife and children has given hostages to fortune; for th ey are impediments to great enterprises, either of virtue or mischief. Certainly the best works, and of greatest merit for the public, have pr oceeded from the unmarried or childless men; which both in affection and means, have married and endowed the public. Yet it were great reason that those that have children, should have greatest care of futur e times; unto which they know they must transmit their dearest pledg es. Some there are, who thought they lead a single life, yet their thou ghts do end with themselves, and account future times impertinences. Nay, there are some other, that account wife and children, but as bills of charges. Nay more, there are some foolish rich covetous men that take a pride, in having no children, because they may be thought so much the richer. For perhaps they have heard some talk. Such an on e is a great rich man, and another except to it, Yea, but he hath a g reat charge of children; as if it were an abatement to his riches. But the most ordinary cause of a single life, is liberty, especially in certai n self-pleasing and humorous minds, which are so sensible of every r estraint, as they will go near to think their girdles and garters, to be bonds and shackles. Unmarried men are best friends, best masters, bes t servants; but not always best subjects; for they are light to run awa y; and almost all fugitives, are of that condition. A single life doth w ell with churchmen; for charity will hardly water the ground, where it must first fill a pool. It is indifferent for judges and magistrates; for if they be facile and corrupt, you shall have a servant, five times w orse than a wife. For soldiers, I find the generals commonly in their hortatives, put men in mind of their wives and children; and I think t he despising of marriage amongst the Turks, makes the vulgar soldier more biased. Certainly wife and children are a kind of discipline of humanity; and single men, though they may be many times more char itable, because their means are less exhaust, yet, on the other side, th ey are more cruel and hardhearted (good to make severe inquisitors), because their tenderness is not so oft called upon. Grave natures, led by custom, and therefore constant, are commonly loving husbands, as was said of Ulysses, vetulam suam praetulit immortalitati. Chaste wom en are often proud, as presuming upon the merit of their chastity. It i s one of the best bonds, both of chastity and obedience, in the wife,

if she thinks her husband wise; which she will never do, if she finds him jealous. Wives are young men's mistresses; companions for midd le age; and old men's nurses. So as a man may have a quarrel to ma rry, when he will. But yet he was reputed one of the wise men, that made answer to the question, when a man should marry,- A young man not yet, an elder man not at all. It is often seen that bad husba nds, have very good wives; whether it be, that it raises the price of t heir husband's kindness, when it comes; or that the wives take a prid e in their patience. But this never fails, if the bad husbands were of their own choosing, against their friends' consent; for then they will b

e sure to make good their own folly.

21. According to the writer, who is more likely to make great con tributions to the public, a married man or a single man?

A) A single man, because he can dedicate this whole life to the c ourse of serving the public, he is more likely to achieve the greatest fame and do the best work.

B) A married man, because he is more mature and shoulders more responsibility of the community and will always tries to change the public for the better.

C) Neither single men nor married men could serve the public wel l because they cannot rid themselves of their earthly existence and wo uld always harbors selfish ideas.

D) The writer does not offer a clear idea in the passage.

22. What is the most important reason for choosing a single life?

A) A single life has a lot merits such as dedication to one’s work, no family burden, and more charity.

B) A single life will always be attracted to the opposite gender w ho appreciate the charm of being a

single man.

C) The biggest attraction of single life is liberty. A man who is sensitive to restriction should choose to

be single as marriage is, at best, a certain type of restriction.

men as they are the disadvantageous group.

members suffer from illness.

Passage Three

Amitai Etzioni is not surprised by the latest headings about schem ing corporate crooks. As a visiting

professor at the Harvard Business School in 1989. he ended his wor k there disgusted with his students’ overwhelming lust for money. “T hey’re taught that profit is all that matters” he says. “Many scho ols don’t even offer ethics courses at all.” Etzioni expressed his frustration about the interests of his graduate students. “By and la rge, I clearly had not found a way to help classes full of MBAs see t hat there is more to life than money, power, fame and self-interest,” he wore at the time.

Today he still takes the blame for not e ducating these “business-leaders-to-be.” “I really feel like I

failed them,” he says. “If I was a better teacher maybe I could have reached them.” Etzioni was a respected ethics expert when he ar rived at Harvard. He hoped his work at the university would give him insight into how questions of morality could be applied to places whe re self-interest flourished. What he found wasn’t encouraging. Those would-be executives had, says Etzioni, little interest in concept of ethics and morality in the boardroom and their professor was met with blank stares when he urged his students to see business in new and d ifferent ways.

Etzioni sees the experience at Harvard as an eye-opening one and s ays there’s much about business schools that he’d like to change. “A lot of th e faculty teaching business are bad news themselves, to reinforcing the notion of profit over community interests.” Etzioni has seen a lot that’s left him shaking his

第6/12页head. And because of what he’s seen taught in business schools, he’s not surprised by the latest rash of

corporate scandals. “In many ways things have got a lot worse at business schools. I suspect,” says Etzioni.

Etzioni is still teaching the sociology of right and wrong and sti ll calling for ethical business

leadership. “People with poor motives will always exist,” he say s. “Sometimes environments constrain those people and sometimes envi ronments give those people opportunity.” Etzioni says the booming ec onomy of the last decade enabled those individuals with poor motives to get rich before getting in trouble. His hope now: that the cries f or reform will provide more fertile soil for his long-standing messag es about business ethics.

26. What impressed Amitai Etzioni most about Harvard MBA students?

A) Their keen interest in business courses. B) Their intense desir e for money.

C) Their tactics for making profits. D) Their potential to become business leaders.

27. Why did Amitai Etzioni say “I really feel like I failed them” (Line 1, Para. 2)?

A) He was unable to alert his students to corporate malpractice.

B) He didn’t teach his students to see business in new and differ ent ways.

C) He could not get his students to understand the importance of e thics in business.

D) He didn’t offer courses that would meet the expectations of th

e business-leaders-to-be.

28. Most would-be executives at the Harvard Business School believ ed that ________.

A) questions of morality were of utmost importance in business aff airs

B) self-interest should not be the top priority in business dealin gs

C) new and different principles should be taught at business schoo ls

D) there was no place for ethics and morality in business dealings

29. In Etzioni’s view, the latest rash of corporate scandals coul

d b

e attributed to ________.

A) the tendency in business schools to stress self-interest over b usiness ethics

B) the executives’ lack of knowledge in legally manipulating cont racts

C) the increasingly fierce competition in the modern business worl d

D) the moral corruption of business school graduates

30. We learn from the last paragraph that ____________.

A) the calls for reform will help promote business ethics

B) businessmen with poor motives will gain the upper hand

C) business ethics courses should be taught in all business school s

D) environmental constraints will help business ethics a lot.

The flight to the South Pole has a strict dress code: passengers o n the two-hour inland journey from

the coast of Antarctica must be equipped with a parka, gloves, gog gles, hat, boots, pants and pullover, thermal underwear and a set of dog tags. The cold weather gear is required in case the plane makes a n emergency landing. The dog tags are in case the plane botches the l anding. It's the sort of thing I never gave much thought to until a m inute ago, when I looked out the porthole to see the familiar expanse of white

第7/12页looming closer at an alarming rate, with no runway in sight. What's t he deal? The deal is, we are about to land on the snow. That's what t he "runway" at the United State's Amundsen--Scott South Pole research station is made of. You can't pave snow; you can only pack it down a nd hope for the best. Fortunately, the LC130 military cargo plane has skis.

For me, to be traveling to the South Pole is a living dream: to st and on the bottom of the planet, to see how people live in a land tha t bears no life, to wake up at three in the morning with the sun shin ing brightly. The Dome Home. The plane banks sharply, and my view fli ps from white to one of the most brilliant blue skies I can recall se eing. One of the South Pole surprises is that there is little snowfal l. The extreme cold limits the amount of water vapor that can form in to clouds. As a result, the sky is intensely clear. But snow drifts i n from the rest of Antarctica and never melts. It piles up and up and up, to the current 9300 feet.

Suddenly an enormous dome emerges out of the sameness of blue and white. It looks as though some mad sports fan built a football stadiu m at the South Pole. Blown snow piles up so relentlessly that the alu

minum dome is fast being buried, like a child's flying saucer forgott en in the snow. Under the dome are National Science Foundation (NSF) research labs, the mess hall, dorms and offices. The station, which r eplaced the original 1956 facility, has grown since its 1975 debut. D esigned for 34 people, it now houses more than 170. While science was the primary motive for building a base at the South Pole, geopolitic al factors were also involved. Establishing an American presence in t he middle of Antarctica prevented other countries from dominating the region. Science was also clearly serving national security. Seismic monitoring at the pole, for example, picks up not only earthquakes ar ound the globe but also clandestine nuclear testing.

As we step from the plane, a confrontational minus-30-degree chill steps up to meet me. The Antarctic cold doesn't feel like air, but l ike something solid pressed against your skin. Mercifully, the walk f rom the plane to the dome is short. The Ice Palace. Following a brief ing in the mess hall, I'm escorted to my quarters-- a blue metal stru cture outside the dome, called a HYPERTAT. A sign over my room reads "Shemp." Next door are "Wilma" and "Fred." You need a sense of humor if you spend much time in a HYPERTAT. To call my space a "room" is so mething of an overstatement. It's five-by-eight feet, with no closet, no desk, no sound-proofing. The fourth wall is a sliding plastic cur tain. Conspicuously absent is a bathroom. I asked my neighbor about t his. He is a tall, thin man, demonstrating the classic South Pole loo k. "Ah, the Ice Palace," he says. He leads me to the back door and po ints to a small building 50 feet away. The South Pole must be the onl y place on the planet where a 2 a.m. trip to the relieved when they t ell you that you're limited to two showers a week. (Water conservatio n is taken seriously here.) Skinny-Sprinting. Surprisingly, the food is restaurant quality. Fruits and vegetables are flown in from New Ze aland twice a month and stored in a walk-in "refrigerator," which is actually heated, not cooled, to keep produce from freezing. The "free zer" is simply the outside.

The warmest temperature on record here is seven degrees. In winter it hovers around 60 below, with occasional dips into the triple digi ts. Oddly, it's when the temperature drops below minus 100 that you'r e likely to see large groups of people frolicking outdoors. Odder sti ll, they're naked. As inductees to the 300 Club, they are required to sprint naked from a 200-degree sauna out into the minus-100-degree c

old to the pole marker. The sprinting can be the most uncomfortable p art: breathing deeply when the air is that cold can be hard on the lu ngs. And the abnormally, altitude sickness is one of the most common complaints at "Club Med", the station's sick bay. Clean Living. At di nner I share a table with a scientist who doesn't mind the cold or th e thin air. "It's unpleasant for people but good for astronomy," he s ays. The low humidity gives astronomers a clear window on the univers e. Using special telescopes, they study invisible portions of the ele ctromagnetic spectrum such as microwaves, which are emitted from cold clouds of gas that may one day

第8/12页become stars.

Another unique quality of the South Pole atmosphere is that it's e xceptionally clean--an invaluable base line against which air samples from other regions can be compared, facilitating global monitoring o f pollutants. In rougher days, the base had a distinctly frontier-tow n feel. So many ordinarily polite, well-mannered men began talking li ke street thugs that the phenomenon was given a name: dome mouth. Whi le the number of women has increased--the male to female ratio is abo ut five to one--there are still no children at the South Pole. The ab sence of children and pets takes getting used to. Chris Cleavelin, a science technician, recalls the day he and a couple of friends were i n New Zealand, the stopover for flights out of Antarctica.

"We were wandering around Christchurch when we saw a woman with a baby carriage. Without speaking, we all crossed the street and made s traight for her. We hadn't seen babies in over a year. She was very p atient. I mean, here are these three pale, scruffy-looking guys makin g a beeline for her baby carriage. It's a wonder she didn't scream."

"Doing Laps." The time to worry about maladjusted behavior is the Antarctic winter. Six months of 24-hour darkness takes its toll. Beca use hydraulic systems don't function in the exreme polar cold, planes can't land and no mail gets delivered. E-mail helps ease the isolati on, but boredom is still a problem. "You end up doing laps," says Cle avelin. "Galley, bar, movie; galley, bar, movie."

Called winter-overs, the 28 staffers who stay during the bleakest months get the privilege of stocking the "black box", a ten-by-ten-fo ot video. The pole's tiny greenhouse never wants for volunteers; peop le crave the bright light and the smell of growing things.

Despite everyone's best efforts, personality conflicts and mood ex tremes are common. Cleavelin describes the winter as "like being coop ed up with 25 brothers and sisters, and you're all expected to get al ong without Mom and Dad being there." All winter over candidates are assessed by psychologists. "One day recalls astronomer J.D. Mayfield, a winter-over first-timer. "One guy said 'ax'. That raised a few eye brows."

The confined, isolated nature of a winter at the South Pole, makes it a useful model for space travel. Realizing this, a team of anthro pologists funded by the NSF recently examined South Pole winter over crews, hoping to determine the personality types best suited to worki ng together for long period in isolation.

On my last day I take a walk--away from the buildings and the peop le. Out on the sparkling wind-carved drifts, all I can see is the blu e of the sky meeting the white of the snow. Four "sun dogs"--small pi eces of rainbow--frame the sun. Tiny crystals glitter on the wind. Wi th no water and no green, no mountains and no soil, I don't have to p ush my imagination to see that the South Pole is more like another pl anet than the earth I know. Therein lies mot only its value to scienc e--but its allure. At this moment the pole seems the most beautiful p lace on earth.

武汉大学 2017年攻读博士学位研究生外语综合水平考试试题 (满分值100分) 科目名称:英语科目代码:1101 注意:所有的答题内容必须写在答案纸上,凡写在试题或草稿纸上的一律无效。 Part I Reading Comprehension (2’×20 = 40 points) Directions:In this part of the test, there will be 5 passages for you to read. Each passage is followed by 4 questions or unfinished statements, and each question or unfinished statement is followed by four choices marked A, B, C and D. You are to decide on the best choice by blackening the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET. Passage One Mr Gordon is right that the second industrial revolution involved never-to-be-repeated changes. But that does not mean that driverless cars count for nothing. Messrs Erixon and Weigel are also right to worry about the West’s dismal recent record in producing new companies. But many old firms are not run by bureaucrats and have reinvented themselves many times over: General Electric must be on at least its ninth life. And the impact of giant new firms born in the past 20 years such as Uber, Google and Facebook should not be underestimated: they have all the Schumpeterian characteristics the authors admire. On the pessimists’ side the strongest argument relies not on closely watching corporate and investor behavior but rather on macro-level statistics on productivity. The figures from recent years are truly dismal. Karim Foda, of the Brookings Institution, calculates that labor productivity in the rich world is growing at its slowest rate since 1950. Total factor productivity (which tries to measure innovation) has grown at just 0.1% in advanced economies since 2004, well below its historical average. Optimists have two retorts. The first is that there must be something wrong with the figures. One possibility is that they fail to count the huge consumer surplus given away free of charge on the internet. But this is unconvincing. The official figures may well be understating the impact of the internet revolution, just as they downplayed the impact of electricity and cars in the past, but they are not understating it enough to explain the recent decline in productivity growth. Another, second line of argument that the productivity revolution has only just begun is more persuasive. Over the past decade many IT companies may have focused on things that were more “fun than fundamental” in Paul Krugman’s phrase. But Silicon Valley’s best companies are certainly focusing on things that change the material world.

Intercultural Communication In recent years, it is widely acknowledged that interculturalcommunication has been becoming an increasingly common phenomenon. From my point of view, a number of factors could account for this trend. First and foremost, the development of transportation. Now jet planes fly everywhere. It used to take months to travel from Shanghai to Los Angeles, but now it takes only 12 hours. It is now much easier for people to move from one country to another. People of different countries and races get together much oftener than before. What’s more, the advancementof communication means. Nowadays people get in touch with each other in various ways, through internet, telephone, mobile phone and so on. These efficient means sharply promote intercultural communication to a large extent. Last but not the list, the increasing of https://www.360docs.net/doc/bf15248770.html,lions of people now move across national borders every year. Therefore, all these causes contribute to the fact that intercultural communication is now a daily occurrence. Its importance now is being recognized by a growing number of people.

2015年武汉大学考博英语真题及详解 Part ⅠReading Comprehension (2×20=40分) Directions: In this part for the test, there will be 5 passages for you to read. Each passage is followed by 4 questions or unfinished statements, and each question or unfinished statement is followed by four choices marked A, B, C and D. You are to decide on the best choice by blackening the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET. Passage One Justice in society must include both a fair trial to the accused and the selection of an appropriate punishment for those proven guilty. Because justice is regarded as one form of equality, we find in its earlier expressions the idea of a punishment equal to the crime. Recorded in the Old Testament is the expression “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.”That is, the individual who has done wrong has committed an offence against society. T o make up for his offence, society must get even. This can be done only by doing an equal injury to him. This conception of retributive justice is reflected in many parts of the legal documents and procedures of modern times. It is illustrated when we demand the death penalty for a person who had committed murder. This philosophy of punishment was supported by the German idealist Hegel. He believed that society owed it to the criminal to give a punishment equal to the crime he had committed. The criminal had by his own actions denied his true self and it is necessary to do something that will counteract

Once they are integrated, they present a much greater power—the power to prevent an asthmatic from dying in a remote town in Alaska, to enable an unemployed bank loan officer to find and succeed at a new form of work, to allow a husband and wife to revel in the accomplishments of a distant daughter while also providing emotional and financial support. These powers are far greater than 第八课的第一段: Countless cultures around the world have disappeared, along with their mythologies.
