In the mid-1950s. I was somewhat bored early-adolescent mae student who believed that doing any more than necessary was warred effort. One day, this approach threw me into embarrassment.

In Mrs. Totten's eighth-grade math class at Central Avenue School in Anderson. Indiana, we were learning to add and subtract decimals (小数).

Our teacher typically assigned daily homewor, which would be recited in class the following day. On most days, our grades were based on our oral answer to homewor questions.

Mrs. Totten usually waled up and down the rows of dess requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had appeared on our homewor sheets. She would flan either at the front or the bac of the classroom and wor toward the other end.

Since I was scared near the middle of about 35 students, it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to answer. This particular time. I had completed my usual two or three problems according to my calculations.

What I failed to epect was that several students were absent, which threw off my estimate. As Mrs. Totters made her way from the beginning of the class. I desperately tried to determine which math problem I would get. I tried to wor it out before she got to me, but I had brain freee and couldn't function.

When Mrs. Totten reached my des, she ased what answer I'd got for problem No. 14. "I…

I didn't get anything,” I answered, and my face felt wa rm

“Correct. "she said.

It turned out that the correct answer was ero.

What did I learn that day? First, always do all your homewor. Second, in real life it isn't always what you say but how you say it that matters. Third. I would never mae it as a mathematician.

If I could choose one school day that taught me the most, it would be that one.

Should we allow modem buildings to be built nest to older buildings in a historic area of a city ? In order to answer this question, we must firs eamine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area Not all historical buildings am attractive. However, them may be other reasons - for eample. economic reasons - why they should be preserved. So. let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?

In my view. new architectural styles can eist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many eamples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been

placed very successfully net to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.

It is true that then arc eamples of new buildings which have spoilt (破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still spea against new buildings in historic areas. I thin this is simply because people are normally conservative (保守的) and do not lie change.

Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings. I believe that it is the duly of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what war there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the name risy choice.

28. What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?

B. They are more pleasing than modem buildings.

29. Which of the following is TRUE according to the author'

A. Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.

B. We should reproduce the same old buildings.

C. Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.

D. No one understands why people spea against new buildings.

30. By "most things forward" in the last paragraph. the author probably means

A. destroy old buildings

B. put things in a different place

C. choose new architectural style

D. respect people's feelings for historical buildings

31. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To eplain why people dislie change.

B. To argue that modern buildings can be both in historic areas.

C. To warn that we could end up living in caves.

D. To admit how new buildings have mined their surroundings.

D

Music lie Moran's and Bach's shouldn't be absent. Real riches arc of the spirit And when you've brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and maes you a little drun. you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills.

Sports, without which you remain poor. mean a IN in life. No matter who you arc, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against the bad days, if you could, and did, play a bit.

Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life. the secret of enjoying life is to

eep adding.

32.Tbe author intends to tell us that

What makes all of these especially unusual is that Ruggiero, 24, has only one leg. When he was a 19-year-old musical theater student at New Jersey’s Montclair State University, Ruggiero had a rare bone cancer in his right leg. Finally his leg would have to be amputated (截) below the knee. Such a setback could have easily ended the career of a less tough person, but Ruggiero, who has been dancing since he was five, now puts the experience into his performance. His show, “The One-Legged Song and Dance Man: Volume 3”,explains how he returned to dance just 18 months after the amputation. His dance now relies on the use of a peg leg(假肢) ,he explains. The secret to his surprising success, he says, was being a “stubborn”patient who refused to give up on his dance and performing studies, despite the advice of his doctor. “It was a real setback, but after it was all over,I said, ‘You know what? I need to pick up right where I left off and continue my career, ’”Ruggiero said. Ruggiero has come to view his peg leg as an instrument. “Tap dancers—they’re always calling themselves musicians, and their feet are their instrument, ” he said. Noting that many audience members will never have seen a one-legged dancer
