Golden Globe Awards

British performers and filmmakers have triumphed at the annual Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles, winning in a number of categories including best film drama for the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

English director Danny Boyle's heart-warming, rags-to-riches tale Slumdog Millionaire took four awards in total, an achievement made all the more remarkable by the fact that the film's star Dev Patel had never acted in a movie before.

The Golden Globes are widely seen as indicators of possible Academy Award success, and Patel is now hoping the film will be nominated for an Oscar. Awards ceremonies are always emotional occasions, and English actress Kate Winslet didn't disappoint, bursting into tears as she received awards for best actress in the film Revolutionary Road and best supporting actress for her role in The Reader.

Winslet paid tribute to her Revolutionary Road co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, with whom she appeared in the film Titanic, describing him as "spectacular" and telling him she loved him with all her heart.

British director Christopher Nolan, who directed the Batman film The Dark Knight, accepted a posthumous supporting actor award on behalf of the late Heath Ledger, who starred as the Joker in the film but died of an accidental prescription drug overdose before it was released.

Nolan told the audience that Ledger would be "eternally missed but never forgotten", adding that everyone who accepted the award in Ledger's name did so with "an awful mixture of sadness but incredible pride".

China's Highest-earning Star

Actor Jet Li has hit the headlines this week because he has broken the record for the highest salary earned by a Chinese film star. China's highest-earning star will receive 100 million yuan (￡6.5 million) for his latest movie, 'The Warlords (投名状)'.

The film, directed by Peter Chan is a martial arts drama, telling the story of three brothers who turn against one another over a beautiful woman. It is set in the 1860s, during the Taiping Rebellion. The other two brothers are played by Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro.

As a teenager, Jet Li was a Wushu champion, and won many medals for his martial arts. His fame from martial arts led to his film debut in 1982 in 'Shaolin Temple', having acquired the screen name Jet Li as a change from his real name

Li Lianjie.

He has an extensive filmography of Chinese and Hong Kong cinema, including the famous series of films Once upon a time in China; about the legendary hero Wong Fei Hung.

However, Jet Li has also in the last 10 years become a Hollywood star, in films such as 'Lethal Weapon 4', 'The Kiss of the dragon', 'Romeo must die', 'The One' and 'Hero'.

Next year his film catalogue will increase again, with his next two films both coming out in 2008. One is the second sequel to The Mummy -the Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The other, 'The Forbidden Kingdom' will see Jet Li teaming up with the renowned kung-fu and film star Jackie Chan.

'The Warlords' will be released across Asia on 13th December, and hopefully we'll see it in Britain next year. Although Jet Li has now sworn off doing any more Wushu epics, I'm sure we'll continue to see his work in Chinese and Hollywood films in years to come.

Long-Awaited Film

Sex and the City was a very popular TV show that ran from 1999 to 2004. It was a romantic comedy drama based on the semi-autobiographical New York newspaper columns written by Candace Bushnell. The show followed the lives of four professional, independent and very stylish women in New York. Audiences loved the show and many people were very sad when it came to an end.

Ever since the TV show came off the air, there has been speculation of a movie being made of the show. Finally in autumn 2007, news broke that filming had started.

Newspapers and magazines were full of pictures and spoilers of what might happen in the film. It was reported different endings were shot to keep the storyline secret.

This week saw the world premiere of the film come to London. All four original cast members from the show are also starring in the movie. They all got a rapturous reception as they arrived on the red carpet.

The stars didn't disappoint the crowds with their fetching designer dresses, living up to the very stylish reputation that their characters and the show have.

Some fans arrived early in the morning to bag a place where they could see their

favorite actresses. Many of them got to meet and speak to the stars.

A lot of people wondered why a movie set in New York had its premiere in London. The actresses said they were thrilled to showcase the film first in the UK and later bring it home to its birthplace in the States.

If you want to find out what happens though, you may just have to try and see the film yourself. Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie in the film, said she hopes there would be a sequel. So if you're a really big fan, this might not be last you see of the glamorous TV show.
