Nicolai Calabria has already become one of the best 106-pound wrestlers. He has successfully climbed to the top of the highest mountain in Africa, and most importantly, he’s changed the attitude of any normal person who watches him compete.

The 17-year-old teenager has one leg. He was born that way, but his goal is to show it’s not the one thing that defines him. He would also be the first one to tell you that he just wants to prove to others and himself that he’s just like other normal ones.

When Calabria was young, his parents tried different prostheses(假肢)to find out which was most comfortable for their son as he tried to keep up with a family, who has a preference for sports.

At first, the Calabrias had their middle child in a prosthesis that looked and functioned like a “real”leg, but soon they decided to choose a different path when they found it wasn’t beneficial to his movement. Then the family moved him to arm crutches(手杖)and from there a new burst of energy was found.

Getting others to believe that he could take off on the soccer field took a little bit longer. When the Calabrias moved to Concord, they had a hard time convincing the town soccer programme to allow a child like him to compete with able-bodied kids. After months and months of debates and meetings, the family received the answer they were looking for. Since then, witnessing a young man on crutches who competes against those with two legs has become a fixed event in the Concord community.

“At that time I had nothing but discouragement working with the soccer community;however, now I have nothing but admiration for the fact that he’s been allowed to play, and people see that he adds value to the game,” his father said. “I just think it’s a great result.”

Robinson Crusoe is a famous novel written by Daniel Defoe. The book tells the story of a man who is shipwrecked (遭遇海难的). He spends 28 years on an island near Venezuela. The book tells the story of everything that happens to Robinson Crusoe. He hopes someone will rescue him, but he has been there for so long on his own that he also begins to fear being rescued.

Robinson Crusoe was published in 1719. Most experts believe the story is b ased on the life of Alexander Selkirk, who was a Scottish sailor. On an expe dition(探险)in 1704, Selkirk had

an argument with his ship’s captain. Selkirk thought the ship was not safe and was about to fall apart.

When the ship stopped at a remote island to get fresh water, Selkirk got off. He tried to get

the other crew members to leave with him, but nobody would. The ship then sa iled away withouthim.Selkirk spent four years and four months on his own on t he island, known as Aguas Buenas.

Selkirk was finally rescued by a ship that visited the island in 1709. Th e ship’s captain was grateful to Selkirk because he provided food for the cr ew when they arrived.

Now archaeologists think they have found the remains of Sel kirk’s camp on Aguas Buenas.They found two deep holes that would have held wooden posts. Th e a r c h a e o l o g i s t s s a y t h i s i s evidence that Selkirk built a shelter there. The post holes are near a fresh water stream. They are located quite high up, which would have meant

that Selkirk was able to watch out for the ships

coming close to the island.

We tend to think of plants as the furniture of the natural world. They don’t move, they don’t make sounds, they don’t seem to respond to anything –at least not very quickly. But as is often the case, our human’s view of the world misses quite a lot. Plants talk to each other all the time. And the language is chemical.

Over the years scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, release compounds(化合物)into the air to help neighboring plants. These chemical warnings all have the same purpose –to spread information about one plant’s disea se or infestation so other plants can defend themselves. But exactly how plants receive and act on many of these signals is still mysterious.

In this week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers in Japan offered some explanations. They had identified one chemical message and traced it all the way from release to action.

The scientists looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest, the cutworm. The researchers studied leaves from exposed and unexposed plants. They found one compound showed up more often in the exposed plants. The substance is called Hex Vic. When the scientists fed Hex Vic to cutworms, it knocked down their survival rate by 17%. The scientists identified the source of Hex Vic, and sprayed it lightly over healthy plants. Those plants were then able to start producing the cutworm-killing Hex Vic. Researchers confirmed that uninfested plants have to build their own weapon to fight off bugs and diseases. How do they know when to play defense? They are warned first by their friendly plant neighbors.

It is a complex tale, and it may be happening in more plant species than tomatoes. It may also be happening with more chemical signals that are still unknown to us. For now though, we know that plants not only communicate, they look out for one another.
