Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you but I‟m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your fr iend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don‟t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?Professor Jereald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white lie,” such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.Research has also been done into the way people‟s behaviour changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now.” They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch.Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Manwatching calls …the mouth cover.‟ He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture can be interpreted as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.Of course, such gesture as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth,or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and, in particular, the context in which the lie is told.1.One sometimes tells one‟s friend a “white lie” because one wants to_________.A.make a profit from the other personB.avoid offending the other personC.convince the other personD.have some fun2.One research suggests that women __________.A.generally lie far more than menB.tend to tell more serious lies than menC.make more promises they can fulfill than menD.are better at telling less serious lies than men3.It can be inferred from the passage that __________.A.politicians tend to tell intentional lies.B.men are less skilled at telling liesC.businessmen seldom break their promisesD.women tend to make false promises4.People may rub their noses when they lie because _________.A.they suffer from high blood pressure at the timeB.the nose is the most sensitive part of the bodyC.the nose reveals the liar more easily than the other parts of the faceD.they do so in order to stop themselves from telling more lies5.It can be learned from the passage that _________.A. lies can easily be detected by careful observersB. lies are usually accompanied by strange gesturesC. people are liable to tell a lie when they hear others lyingD. a liar may give away his or her intention unconsciouslyPassage 2Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal. One of their chief duties is to give their children a sense of personalworth, for self-esteem is the basis of a good mental health. A youngster, who is often made to feel stupid, often compared to brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins, will not feel confident and become so afraid of failing, that he (or she) won‟t try at all. Of course, they should be corrected when they do wrong; this is the way children learn. But the criticisms should be balanced with praises.Parents owe their children firm guidance and consistent discipline. It is frightening for a youngster to feel that he is in charge of himself; it‟s like being in a car without brakes. The parent who sa ys “No” when other parents say “Yes” sends a double message. He is also saying: “I love you, and I am ready to risk your anger, because I don‟t want you to get into trouble.”Parents owe their children a comfortable feeling about their body, and enough information about sex to balance the wrong information that they will surely receive from their friends.Parents owe their children privacy and respect for their personal things. This means not borrowing things without being permitted, not reading diaries and mail, not looking through pockets. If a mother feels that she must read her daughter‟s diary to know what is going on, the communication between them must be pretty bad.Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means respecting elders, teachers, and the law. The best way to teach such values is by example. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees his parents steal tools from the factory or towels from a hotel will think that it is all right to steal. A youngster who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have a difficult time laughing and loving. No child asks to be born. If you bring a life to the world, you owe the child som ething. And if you give him his due, he‟ll have something of value to pass along to your grandchildren.6. According to the passage, parents owe their children the following things except____________.A.CarsB.PrivacyC.Respect of selfrmation about their body7. The writer thinks that teenagers are frightened when they are in charge of themselves because ___________.A. They don‟t know how to stop a car without brakesB. There is no one to guide and discipline themC. They are afraid of being left aloneD. There is no one to ask for help when in trouble8. Which of the following ways is advised for parents to show love to their children?A. Saying “Yes” to everything the children ask for.B. Never embracing older children.C. Refusing something to their children.D. Never criticizing children.9. The word “due” in the last paragraph means_______________.A. something one should do or finish before a fixed timeB. reasonable explanation(s) or plan(s)C. what must be given to someone because it is right or owingD. the money to be paid10. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. Parents prefer to let their children be in charge of their own lives at an early age.B. Children learn much by seeing what their parents do.C. Children s houldn‟t be corrected because it destroys their self-esteem.D. It is better to compare a youngster to his brighter brothers because it makes him try harder.Passage 3Procrastinators (拖延症患者),take note: If you‟ve tried building self-discipline and you‟re still putting things off, maybe you need to try something different. One new approach: Check your mood.Often, procrastinators attempt to avoid the anxiety or worry aroused by a tough task with activities aimed at repairing their mood, such as checking Facebook or taking a nap. But the pattern, which researchers call “giving in to feel good,” makes procrastinators feel worse later, whenthey face the consequences of missing a deadline or making a hasty, last-minute effort, says Timothy Pychyl, an associate professor of psychology at Carleton University.Increasingly, psychologists and time management consultants are focusing on a new strategy: helping procrastinators see how attempts at mood repair are destroying their efforts and learn to regulate their emotions in more productive ways. The new approach is based on several studies in the past two years showing that negative emotions can damage attempts at self-control. It fills a gap among established time-management methods, which stress behavioral changes such as adopting a new organizing system or doing exercises to build willpower.Researchers have come up with a playbook of strategies to help procrastinators turn mood repair to their advantage. Some are tried-and-true classics: Dr. Pychyl advises procrastinators to “just get started, and make the threshold for getting started quite low.”Procrastinators are more likely to put the technique to use when they understand how mood repair works, says Dr. Pychyl. He adds, “A real mood boost comes from doing what we intend to do—the things that are important to us.”He also advises procrastinators to practice “time travel”—projecting themselves into the future to imagine the good feelings they will have after finishing a task, or the bad ones they will have if they don‟t. This remedies procrastinators‟ tendency to get so stuck in present anxieties and worries that they fail to think about the future.Another mood-repair strategy, self-forgiveness, is aimed at dismissing the guilt and self-blame. University freshmen who forgave themselves for procrastinating on studying for the first exam in a course procrastinated less on the next exam, according to a recent study led by Michael Wohl, an associate professor of psychology at Carleton.11. What does Timothy Pychyl say about the “giving in to feel good”practice?A) It helps procrastinators meet the deadline in the last minute.B) It effectively drives away anxiety and worry.C) It probably does more harm than good.D) It prevents procrastinators from giving it.12. What does the new strategy suggest procrastinators should do?A) Adjust their emotions in a more positive way.B) Make greater efforts in mood repair.C) Show greater self-control when facing stress.D) Change their emotions regularly.13. Where does a real mood boost come from according to Dr. Pychyl?A) Getting started from a low threshold.B) Sticking to one's intention.C) Learning important techniques of mood repair.D) Doing things that really matter.14. What is the purpose of the practice “time travel”?A) To stop people from worrying about the future.B) To project the future scheme for people.C) To release people from the present negative emotions.D) To accelerate the speed of finishing a task.15. What can be inferred from Michael Wohl‟s study?A) Procrastinators are still able to get good scores in exams.B) Self-forgiveness is an effective way to curb procrastination.C) University freshmen can rid off procrastination easily.D) The sense of guilt prevents students from putting things off.Part IV. Now, a study says it can also spread. A friend of a lonely person was 52% more likely to develop feelings of loneliness. And a friend of that friend was 25% more likely to do the same.Earlier findings showed that happiness, fatness and the ability to stop smoking can also grow like infections within social groups. The findings all come from a major health study in the American town of Framingham, Massachusetts. The study began in 1948 to investigate the causes of heart disease. Since then, more tests have been added, including measures of loneliness and depression. The new findings involved more than 5,000 people in the second generation of the Framingham Heart Study. The researchers examined friendship histories and reports of loneliness. The results established a pattern that spread as people reported fewer close friends. For example, loneliness can affect relationships between next-door neighbors. The loneliness spreads as neighbors who were close friends now spend less time together. The study also found that loneliness spreads more easily among women than men.Researchers from the University of Chicago, Harvard and the University of California, San Diego, did the study. The findings appeared last month in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The average person is said to experience feelings of loneliness about 48 days a year. The study found that having a lonely friend can add about 17 days. But every additional friend can decrease loneliness by about 5%, or two and a half days.Lonely people become less and less trusting of others. This makes it more and more difficult for them to make friends---and likely that society will reject them.John Cacioppo at the University of Chicago led the study. He says it is important to recognize anddeal with loneliness. He says people who have been pushed to the edges of society should receive help to repair their social networks. The aim should be to aggressively create what he calls a "protective barrier" against loneliness. This barrier, he says, can keep the whole network from coming apart.31. Besides loneliness, which of the following can also spread among people?A. FriendshipB. HappinessC. DepressionD. Smoking32. "Starting this fall with high school math and science, we will be the first state in the nation to provide schools with a state-approved list of digital textbooks." That was Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in June, talking about his effort to get schools to use materials available free online. He listed reasons why he thinks digital textbooks make sense.California approves traditional textbooks in six-year cycles. Digital ones can offer the latest information. They lighten the load of school bags. They save paper and tress, and make learning more fun and interactive. And above all, he said they help schools with their finances. The state has had to make severe cuts in school spending because of deep financial problems. More than six million students attend California public schools.Earlier this year, California invited content developers to offer digital math and science materialsfor high schools. These had to meet at least 90% of the state's learning requirements. Specially trained teachers examined 16 textbooks and approved ten of them.Six of the ten were published by the CK12 Foundation, a nonprofit group that had been developing digital science and math books for about two years. The foundation paid teachers and other education professionals to write and edit them. The money came from a group financed by the Khosla Family.California cannot require schools to use the digital textbooks. Individual school districts will have to decide for themselves.Susan Martimo, a California Department of Education official, says she does not expect widespread use right away. He best guess is that some schools with a lot of technology will be the first to use them, but only in addition to their traditional books.School administrators point out that the texts may be free online, but students need a way to access them. Not everyone has a computer or electronic reader. Schools could print out copies, but that would not help the environment. Also, there is the cost to train teachers to use digital textbooks effectively.37. The Digital Textbook Initiative _______.A. will probably take effect in six yearsB. covers all the high school subjectsC. has been approved by all statesD. is advocated by California state governor38. The main reason for promoting digital textbooks is toA. help save moneyB. benefit the environmentC. provide interesting materialsD. reduce studen ts‘ heavy burden39. According to Susan Martimo, digital textbooks _______.A. are not likely to have a widespread useB. will soon replace traditional onesC. will first be adopted by well-equipped schoolsD. are certain to be approved by school districts42. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.A. schools are reluctant to print out copiesB. the use of digital textbooks is not really freeC. students need to pay for computersD. training teachers to use the textbooks is not efficientPassage ThreeDoctors in Britain are warning of an obesity time bomb, when children who are already overweight grow up . So, what should we do? Exercise more? Eat less? Or both? The government feels it has to take responsibility for this expanding problem. The cheerful Mr. Pickwick, the hero of the novel by Charles Dickens, is seen in illustrations as someone who is plump(胖乎乎的)---and happy . In 18th century paintings beauty is equated with rounded bodies and soft curves. But nowadays being overweight is seen as indicating neither a cheerful character nor beauty but an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. So what do you do? Diet? Not according to Englan d‘s chief medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson. He says that physical activity is the key for reducing the risks of obesity cancer and heart disease. And the Health Secretary John Reid ever said that being inactive is as serious a risk factor in heart disease as smoking. So, having bought some cross trainers, how much exercise should you do? According to Sir Liam Donaldson, at least 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week. Is going to the gym the answer? Luckily for those who find treadmills (跑步机) tedious , the Health Development Agency believes that physical activity that fits into people‘s live may be more effective . They suggest taking the stairs rather than the lift, walking up escalators, playing active games with your children, dancing or gardening. And according to a sports psychologist , Professor Biddle , gyms ‗ are not making the nation fit‘, and may even cause harm .There‘s new scientific evidence that too much exercise may actually be bad for you. Scientists at the University of Ulster have found that unaccustomed exercise releases dangerous free radicals that can adversely affect normal function in unfit people. The only people who should push their bodies to that level of exercise on a regular basis are trained athletes. So, should we forget about gyms and follow some experts‘ advice to increase exerci se in our daily life? After all, getting off the bus a stop early and walking the rest of the way can‘t do any harm! One final thought. How come past generations lacked gym facilities but were leaner and fitter than people today?43. This passage is mainly about______.A. how to keep fit and avoid fatnessB. increased risks for overweight peopleC. the dangers of exercise in the gymD. the benefit of a balanced diet44.What does “this expanding problem”(Para.1) refer to ?A. IT compares similar qualities of two dissimilar objects. With a simple metaphor, one object becomes the other: Love is a rose .Although this does not sound like a particularly rich image, a metaphor can communicate so much about a particular image that poets use them more than any other type of figurative language . The reason for this is that poets compose their poetry to express what they are experiencing emotionally at that moment. Consequently, what the poet imagines love to be may or nay no be our perception of love. Therefore, the poet‘s job is to enable us to experience it, to feel it the same way as the poet does.Let‘s analyze this remarkably unsophisticated metaphor concerning love and the rose to see what it offers. Because the poet uses a comparison with a rose, first we must examine the characteristics of that flower. A rose is spectacular in its beauty, its petals(花瓣) are nicely soft, and its smell is pleasing. It‘s possible to say that a rose is actually a feast to the senses of sight, touch, and smell. The rose‘s appearance seems to border on perfection, each petal seemingly symmetrical in form. Isn‘t this the way one‘s love should be? A loved one should be a delight to one‘s senses and seem perfect. However, there is another dimension added to the comparison by using a rose. Roses have thorns. The poet wants to convey the idea that roses can be tricky. So can love, the metaphor tells us. When one reaches out with absolute trust to touch the object of his or her affection, ouch, a thorn can cause great harm! ―Be careful,‖ the metaphor warns: Love is a feast to the senses, but it can overwhelm us, and it can also hurt us and cause acute suffering. This is the poet‘s perception of love--an admonition(劝诫). What is the point? Just this: It took almost14 sentences to clarify what a simple metaphor communicates in only four words! That is the artistry and the joy of the simple metaphor.49. According to the passage, what is a metaphor?A. A comparison between two different objects with similar features.B. A contrast between two different things to create a vivid image.C. A description of two similar objects in a poetic way.D. A literary device specially employed in poetry writing.50. The main idea of this passage is that _______.A. rose is a good image in poetryB. love is sweet and pleasingC. metaphor is ambiguousD. metaphor is great poetic device51. It can be inferred from the passage that a metaphor is __________.A. difficult to understandB. rich in meaningC. not precise enoughD. like a flower52. As is meant by the author, thorns of a rose_________.A. Protect the rose from harmB. Symbolize reduced loveC. Add a new element to the image of loveD. Represent o bjects of one‘s affection53. The meaning of the love-is –a-rose metaphor is that____________.A. love is a true joyB. true love comes once in a lifetimeC. love does not last longD. love is both good and bad experiences54. According to the passage, poetry is intended to___________ .A. release angerB. entertain the readersC. express poets‘ ideasD. reward the sensesPassage FiveSome 23 million additional U.S. residents are expected to become more regular users of the U.S. health care system in the next several years, thanks to the passage of health care reform. Digitizing medical data has been promoted as one way to help the already burdened system manage the surge in patients. But putting people‘s health information in databases and online is going to do more than simply reduce redundancies. It is already shifting the very way we seek and receive health care.―The social dynamics of care are changing,‖ says John Gomez, vice president of Eclipsys, a medical information technology company. Most patients might not yet e willing to share their latest CT scan images over Facebook, he notes, but many parents post their babies‘ ultrasound images, and countless patients nowadays use social networking sites to share information about conditions, treatments and doctors. With greater access to individualized health information—whether that is through a formal electronic medical record, a self-created personal health record or a quick instant-messaging session with a physician-the traditional roles of doctors and patients are undergoing a rapid transition.―For as long as we‘ve known, health care has been ‗I go to the physician, and they tell me what to do, and I do it,‘‖ sa ys Nitu Kashyap, a physician and research fellow at the Yale Center for Medical Informatics. Soon more patients will be arriving at a hospital or doctor‘s office having reviewed their own record, latest test results and recommended articles about their health concerns. And even more individuals will be able to skip that visit altogether, instead sending a text message or e-mail to their care provider or consulting a personal health record or smart-phone application to answer their questions. These changes will be strengthened by the nationwide shift to electronic medical records, which has already begun. Although the majority of U.S. hospitals and doctors' offices are still struggling to start the changeover, many patients already have electronic medical records—and some even have partial access to them. The My Chart program , in use at Cleveland Clinic , the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and other facilities , is a Web portal (门户) through which patients can see basic medical information as well as some test results.Medical data is getting a new digital life, and it is jump-starting a "fundamental change in how care is provided," Gomez says.55. Recently, a very good friend of mine — who also happens to be an ex boyfriend — showed me a tweet that popped up on his feed. It said something along the lines of, "If you're friends with your ex, you were never really in love."
We had a good chuckle about it. He and I dated for a couple years in high school, and yes, we were in love. First loves, in fact. Our relationship was pretty serious — maybe not Noah and Allie next-level sh*t, but serious all the same. And now, here we are, in our early 20s and total chums.Together, we came up with particular circumstances under which you can befriend your ex — even if, at one point, you loved him or her dearly. Take note, readers: here are six conditions that may just be the gateway for brohood between you and a past love. 1. It's been a long time since the relationship ended. 1. Facts are facts — [在此处键入] [在此处键入] [在此处键入] there's simply no way you can be buddies with a previous partner a week after you call it quits. Probably not even six months. Of course, it all depends on just how significant the relationship was. If it was a brief fling, it'll take much less time. If you were both head over heels, you'll (most likely) have to hold out a couple years before either of you are ready to try shifting gears. 2. You've found love with someone else. 2. This is not ENTIRELY essential, but it certainly helps for shedding any lingering feelings. If you've happened upon a worthwhile relationship with another person, it's a hell of a lot easier to give friendship a go with your ex. Think about it — if the experiences you had with this person are the most recent romantic memories you have, you just won't be ready. 1. 3. You've exhausted all possibilities of a future relationship. 3. When my friend and I dated, we split upward of 12 (!) times. Ahh, high school. Couldn't live with each other; couldn't live without. We did everything in our power to salvage our admittedly dramatic affair, but it simply wasn't meant to be — a fact we now acknowledge and accept. And in the process of all those breakups, we totally exhausted the possibility of getting back together in the future. It's almost laughable just how hard we tried and, in turn, how epically we failed. Make no mistake, if there's room for a potential reuniting somewhere down the line, it'll be extra, extra difficult to be pals. 4. Neither one of you is an assh*le. 4. There's a jerk or two in my past whom I would never even consider chatting up — the idea is actually kind of nauseating (if you've ever dated a d-bag, you'll know what I'm talking about). My friend, on the other hand, was and is a good guy, so I don't feel the least bit ashamed of our relationship. 5. You have a good connection. 5. Obviously, there has to have been some sort of spark between the two of you for companionship to even be plausible — otherwise, it'll fall awkwardly flat. I once dated a guy who was kind of a lame punk, and the idea of becoming chummy with him is so . . . meh. If during your relationship, you were able to discuss deep sh*t like the concept of fate or what "eternity" means, the greater the potential friend.
