那么主体结构的材料从何而来呢?青藏高原隆起后，对大气环流产生了明显的影响，导致东亚大陆季风气候开始形成。
从距今300万年开始，因为干旱少雨，年温差、日温差都很大，中亚地区地表物质的物理风化非常强烈，导致岩石破碎，逐渐形成面积广袤的戈壁、沙漠，进而产生了大量粒径小于0.25毫米的颗粒物——这就是用来搭建黄土高原的材料。
地基选好了，建筑材料有了，由谁来开始搭建呢?此时季风作为“建筑师”出马了。
由于地球自转和地球上太阳辐射的不均匀性，地球上会产生沿纬度分布的风带——南北纬30°和赤道间的东南信风和东北信风带，南北纬30°到60°之间的西风带。
青藏高原强烈隆起后，这就迫使西风带分成南北两支，南支沿喜马拉雅山以南向东流动，北支沿青藏高原北缘向东流动，并向南扩展到大约北纬30°左右。
它首先经过的是比较干旱的地带，一定的气象条件下，风会把地面的颗粒物吹扬起来，沿着山间低地形成的通道直接输送到今黄土高原地区。
在到达黄土高原地区时，风力渐渐减弱，于是粗颗粒先被抛撒下来、然后是粒径中等的颗粒、最后是小颗粒物，所以今天黄土高原上粒径由大到小的沙黄土、黄土、黏黄土由西北向东南(与风的方向相吻合)呈明显的带状分布。
