《雾都孤儿》中的纯洁品质

The Purity in Oliver Twist1. Introduction1.1 Brief introduction of Charles DickensCharles Dickens was born on 7 February 1812, at Mile End Terrace in the especially sign cant, a …lucky‟day for new beginnings. His parents, John and Elizabeth, were a young, lively, easy-going couple who had moved to the area on their marriage in June 1809, to be near the docks where John was employed as a clerk in the Navy Pay Office. They already had a daughter before Dickens was born.In Dickens early childhood, he lived a rich and happy life. Like many children, five-year-old Dickens received his first lessons from his mother. And then he also received an education from a private school. However, his parents had never restricted their finance and they often hosted large parties. By the end of 1823 the family finances were in a desperate state. He had to take the responsibility of the heavy house work at his 11.When Dickens was12, he and his family were sent to prison because of the debt. He spent some times in the factory as a laboring child. The horrific conditions in the factory haunted him for the rest of his life, so did the experience of the temporary orphan hood. After inheriting some money, Dickens‟s father got out of prison and Dickens returned to school. At his 15, he worked at the Law office as an apprentice, and then a Clerk Assistant and also a Court Recorders. At his beginning of 20, he was staring to be a reporter in newspaper office. In 1836, a collection entitled Sketches by Boz earned him recognition as a writer. And Dickens became more famous because of his first novel The Pickwick Papers published in the same year.In 1836, Dickens and Catherine Hogarth got marry, but after 20 years of marriage and ten children, Dickens fell in love with Ellen Ternan, who was an actress. Soon after, Dickens and his wife separated, ending a long series of marital difficulties.Dickens remained a prolific writer to the end of his life, and his novel, among them Oliver Twist, Great Expectation, A Tale of Two City, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, and Bleak House, continued to earn critical and popular acclaim.1.2 Charles Dickens’s Oliver TwistIn 1837, the first installment of Oliver Twist appeared in the magazine Bentley Miscellany, which Dickens was then editing. The main role was a boy called Oliver Twist. He was born in a workhouse in 1830s England. His mother, whose name no one knew, was found on the street and dies just after Oliver‟s birth. Oliver spent the first none years of his life in a badly run home for young orphans and then was transferred to a workhouse for adults. Anyone could bully Oliver, including other boys in the workhouse and churchman. After experiencing the apprentice life, and the hard escape, Oliver was still involved in the den of thieves, acting in collusion with the criminal and living a very sorrowful time. With the help of the kind-hearted people, like Nancy, Rose Maylie and her family and so on, Oliver found out his relations and received a happy life finally. The passion behind Oliver Twist, animated in part by Dickens‟s own childhood experiences and in the part by his outrage at the living conditions of the poor that he had witnessed as a journalist, touched his contemporary readers.1.3 Social Environment1With great success, Oliver Twist was a thinly veiled protest against the Poor Law of 1834, which dictated that all public charity must be channeled through workhouse.England in the 1830s was rapidly undergoing a transformation from agriculture, rural economy to an urban, industrial nation. The growing middle class had achieved an economic influence equal to, if not greater than, that of the British aristocracy. Meanwhile, the middle class asked for the share of political power with the landed gentry. And this claim brought about a restriction of the voting system. The desire gaining social legitimacy of the middle class gave rise to the Evangelical religious movement and inspired sweeping economic and political change. In English, the high class was the …gentle class‟, and they did not need to work for his living. Yet the middle class had to work to earn his wealth. So they promoted work as a moral virtue to alleviate the stigma. As a result, the moral value attached to work, along with the middle class‟s insecurity about its own social legitimacy, led English society to subject the poor to hatred and cruel. Many members of middle classwere eager to separate them from the lower class and one of the ways to do this was to defame the lower class as lazy and good-for-noting person. In Victorian society, people regarded the success in economic as a sign, that is to say, God favored the honest, moral virtue of the successful individual‟s efforts, and, thus, interpreted the condition of poverty as a sign of the weakness of the poor individual.2. The analysis of the Major roles2.1 Oliver Twist2.1.1 The brief introduction of OliverAs the child hero of a melodramatic novel of social protest, Oliver Twist was meant to appeal more to our sentiments than our literary sensibilities. Born in a workhouse in 1830s England, he seemed to be a tragedy since the first day. No one knew who his mother was, and no one knew where he was from. He had to be sent to the workhouse, living a hard time. Even when he escaped from the hell, he was involved in another hell. Meeting with bad evil Fagin made him become a thief, while Nancy, The Maylie and Mr.Brownlo let him know that there were still benign person in the world. At the end, he did not lose himself. He kept purity even though he was in the darkness.2.1.2 The personality of Olive rAlthough he was raised in corrupt surrounding, his purity and virtue were absolute. Oliver was shocked and horrified when he saw the Artful Dodger and Charley Bates picked a stranger‟s pocket and again when he was forced to participate in a burglary. Thus, Oliver was not born to be a thief. On the contrary, he was just a common and honest child. Moreover, Oliver was a moral person and he knew how to express his gratitude to people who gave him help before. Also, he was full of the sense of self-respect. When Noah humiliated his mother, he became no longer gentle and weak, taking Noah by the arm and jerked Noah round brutally.2.2. Nancy2.2.1 The brief introduction of NancyA young prostitute and one of Fagin‟s former child pick-pockets, Nancy was also Bill Sike‟s lover. Her love for Sikes and her sense of moral decency came into conflict when Sikes abused Oliver. Despite her criminal lifestyle, she was among the noblest characters in the novel. In effect, she gave her life for Oliver when Sikes murdered her for revealing Monk‟s plots.2.2.2 The personality of NancyAs a child of the streets, Nancy had been a thief and drinks to excess. “Free and agreeable…manners…” 2 indicated that she was a prostitute and indulgence. In fact, the personality of Nancy was complicated. She was different from Oliver or Mr. Brownlow, who acted as kind-hearted persons and did not know what was evil. And she was also different from Fagin, and Sikes who were all evil could barely comprehend goodness. Only Nancy comprehended and was capable of both good and evil.2.3 Rose Maylie2.3.1 The brief introduction of Rose MaylieAgnes Fleming‟s sister, raised by Mrs.Maylie after the death of Rose‟s father. A beautiful, compassionate, and forgiving young woman, Rose was the novel‟s model of female virtue. She established a loving relationship with Oliver even before it was revealed that the two were related.2.3.2 The personality of Rose Maylie.Rose was a young lady of sympathy and perfect chastity. She represents all the purity that comes from good breeding.3. The purity in the darkness of the major roles.3.1 The purity of Oliver.Oliver was the major role in the novel. He was an orphan born in a workhouse, living in a period of the first stage of the capitalism, which were impoverished, selfish, and worldly. Although there was full of darkness, Oliver still stood by the brightness, keeping his purity. When the first time he came to that world, Oliver, like other children in the workhouse, had been ridiculed, and no body cared about him. While in the parish,Oliver had always been flogged and bullied. At the same time, he often received the opportunity to starve. At the age of 9, he became an apprentice, continuing to suffer. It seemed that Oliver was in the worst surrounding and he was the poor guy in the world. He would be the evil because of being influence by that situation. Even Mr. Bumble and the other workhouse officials insisted on portraying Oliver as an ungrateful, immoral pauper. However, he did not and he was not.“In an instant the whole mystery of the handkerchiefs, and the watches, and the jewels, and the Jew, rushed upon the boy‟s mind. He stood, for a moment, with the blood so tingling through all his veins from terror, which he felt as if he were in a burning fire…”Oliver watched with horror as Charley and the Dodger sneaked up behind the man and stolen his handkerchief for the first time when he was involved in the den of thieves. All of his body was full of fear. For Oliver, he lived in the workhouse since he was a child. He should have known …Survival of the Fittest‟; he should have been a cunning person to protect himself; he should not be frightened. But, as a matter of fact, he was just a naive child and he knew stealing was faulty behavior. And as we all know, Fagin was a conniving career criminal, taking in homeless children and training them to pick pockets for them. Charley and Dodger were the examples of his …product‟. Both of them were skillful thieves. Also, it stated that although they were thieves, they did not need to starve as long as they followed Fagin and were his helpers. Thus, Oliver could be the members of theirs. But, every now and then, Oliver wanted to escape and he was not used to that life. And again when Sikes and Crackit ordered him into the house, Oliver reacted with shock at the idea of stealing. Moreover, when Oliver was caught by Sikes and Nancy, and sent to Fagin again, he begged them for returning the books and money to Mr. Brownlo instead of keeping it for himself or giving them to Sikes to please him. He knew how to distinguish between right and wrong. When Oliver was hit by the gun and recovered, he begged for some way to repay his benefactors‟kindness. Oliver did not become a selfish, cunning and cruel person even though he was in corruption. He retained the most purity thing in his heart. Although treated with cruel and surrounded by coarseness for most of his life, he was a pious and innocent child, and his charms draw the attentionof the wealth benefactors. When Oliver got rid of the fold and the evils, and returned to Mr. Brownlo, he went back to his native town to find his friend Dick. He was a rich man at that time, but he did not forget his fellow. He wanted to give Dick a happy life. “We will take him away from here, and have him clothed and taught, and sent him to some quiet country place he may grow strong and well…”“”What a purity child Oliver is! Friendship was important in his life no matter who he was today.3At the end of the story, Oliver gave half of his property to his brother, Monks, the one who wanted to kill him before. The cruel reality did not scare him. He believed the niceness and continuing his life with his pure heart. All these presented that, even when people were born into squalid conditions, they could appreciate goodness and morality.3.2 The purity of NancyNancy, a young prostitute, was one of Fagin‟s former child pickpockets. According to some lines in the text, it was not hard to know Nancy had been the thief for nearly 12 years. What a tragic condition she met in those years! Even when she had a lover Bill Sikes, a violent and cruel person, what‟s the worst, she was often maltreated by Sikes. She did not own the love and happiness.Even so, Nancy could still keep her purity.“Keep back the god, Bill! He‟ll tear the boy to pieces. ”“The Jew inflicted a smart blow on Oliver‟s shoulders with the club; and was raising it for a second, when the girl, rushing forward, wrested it from his hand. She flung it into the fire, with a force that brought some of the glowing coals whirling out into the room……” That was the first time Nancy rebelled Fagin and Sikes. And the most surprising thing was she did it all for an unfamiliar child, Oliver. “The child shan‟t be torn down by the dog, unless you kill me first…”4Nancy had spearheaded the scheme to bring Oliver back into Fagin‟s fold. But her outburst against Sikes and Fagin for seizing and mistreating Oliver demonstrated her deep and passionate sense of morality.“I have saved you from being ill-used once, and I will again, and I do now…You can‟t help yourself. I have tried hard for you, but all to no purpose. You are hedgedround; and if ever you are to get loose from here, this is not the time…” Although fighting with Fagin and Sikes, Nancy was wedded to her own opinion to help Oliver and nothing can change her. What was the power to push her to do this? Love and kindness from the heart were the reasons. In chapter 40, Nancy confessed to Rose that she was the one who kidnapped Oliver on his errand for Mr.Brownlo. She related that she overheard Monks tell Fagin that he was Oliver‟s brother. Monks wanted Oliver identity to remain unknown so that Monks himself could claim their family‟s full inheritance. Monks would kill Oliver if he could do so without endangering himself. He had also promised to pay Fagin if Oliver was recaptured. What a big conspiracy! Of course Nancy should kwon what the result was if she told the truth to Rose, and she also knew what she would suffer if she betrayed Sikes. But, even so, she still chose to say. What‟s the power to push her to do this? Purity and kindness are from her heart. She wanted to save the life of Oliver. She wanted to punish the guilty. On one hand, although Sikes treated Nancy ruthless, Nancy still loved him. Bill Sikes was ill with a fever. Nancy nursed him anxiously, despite his surly attitude. When she divulged the information about Fagin and Monks to Rose, Rose offered to help Nancy leave her life of crime. But Nancy replied that she could not, because she was attached to Sikes despite his abusive ways. There was a strong contrast between Nancy and Sikes. A thief should not have love like Sikes. All he or she has were money and benefits. Nancy was born in that situation as Sikes, but she did not be the second Sikes. She knew love and she expressed her love. She also was not influenced by the corruption. On the other hand, Nancy informed Rose that she could be found on London Bridge between 11 and 12 every Sunday night in case further testimony was needed. When Rose gave her money, she refused. Even when she met Mr.Brownlo and Rose on London Bridge, Nancy begged them to ensure that none of her associates got into trouble because of her choice to help Oliver. The attitude and behavior of Nancy showed humanity. In the 1830s, the poor were subjected to hatred and cruelty. They enjoyed no comforts in their reliance on public assistance. They needed money to save their life. However, Nancy did not receive the money. What Sikes and Noahconsiderate was themselves, while Nancy chose to protect them despite their selfishness before. All the facts told us that Nancy was a pure girl more than a street girl and woman as a thief. The key words to describe Nancy were thief, self-respect, kind, and faithful. The gloomy environment could not remove these out of her life. Although she considered herself …lost almost beyond redemption‟, she ended up making the ultimate sacrifice for a child.3.3 The purity of Rose Maylie.Rose was the novel of female virtue. And at the same time, she was the bourgeois. As we all know, the era of the novel was Victorian. The bourgeois hated the poor and treated them badly. And with the rise of capitalism during the Industrial Revolution, individualism was very much in vogue as a philosophy. Victorian capitalists believed that society would run most smoothly if individuals looked out for their own interests.5So, did Rose do the same thing as the person in her period? No, she did not. Upon seeing Oliver, Rose imagined his entire history at a glance. Unlike most adults who had tried to second-guess him, Rose‟s hypotheses about his past and personality were accurate. She surmised that Oliver took part in the attempted burglary because he had never …known a mother‟s love‟ or because he suffered …ill-usage and blows‟ and …the want of bread‟. She name d all the miserable conditions of poverty that may have …driven him to herd with men who have forced him to guilty‟. Unlike the English legal system, Rose believed in forgiveness and kindness. Therefore, for the first time in his life Oliver was given the chance to narrate his life story on his term. This event was an important step in establishing his identity as separate from his surroundings. The help of Rose gave Oliver the second life. She also established a loving relationship with Oliver even before it was revealed that the two were related. In addition, Rose not only showed mercy to Oliver but also took him in their house. Facing with the sick Oliver, Mrs. Maylie and Miss Rose then took him to the countryside. In the blissful rural environment, Oliver‟s health was improved vastly, so were his reading and writing skills. Rose and her mother gave good consideration tohim instead of looking down on him as the bourgeois usually did.“ …Stay another moment, ‟interposed Rose,……Will you return to this gang of robbers, and to this man, when a word can save you? What fascination is it that can take you back, and make you cling to wickedness and misery? ‟” This was t he conversation that Rose said to Nancy. Rose offered help that Nancy left her life of crime, even though she was a thief and even though she was a prostitute. Rose did not show any hostility and disdains to Nancy, and on the contrary, she gave guidance to Nancy and persuaded her to go back to the right way.Even when she kept accompany with Oliver to his native town, Oliver wanted to see the poor child Dick and help him get away from the dark condition. Rose did not know anything about Dick, but she said, “You shall tell him how happy you are, and how rich you have grown, and that in all your happiness you have none so great as the coming back to make him happy too…” The beautiful woman showed us what purity heart was again.Rose was not the common bourgeois. She had not been polluted by the society. Her virtue and kindness sounded foreign at that time, but all she did told us those were real. What a beautiful, compassionate, and forgiving young woman. It was evident that her purity moved us a lot and hit the darkness at that time.4. The reflection of the qualities of the major roles in modern societyThe major roles in Oliver Twist could keep purity in the dark society and what about today‟s people? The theme of today‟s world is economic. Thus, more and more people want to seize the power to satisfy their greed.4.1 The defects of modern society4.1.1 Corruption behaviorsOn 14th March, 2011, in the Great Hall of the People, Premier Wen Jiabao, said to the journalist that one of the most dangerous things to defect the development was corruption. According to this, we could not hard to find corruption was deeply a serious problem.Wen Qiang, the director of Judicial Bureau in Chongqing, had been the most famous person who stood on …corruption‟. As a member o f the Communist Party, andas a servant in China, he had an obligation to his citizens, and he had an obligation to this body to see that his resolutions were complied with. But, he did not use his authority to serve his people, and his country. He did not devote to his task. Reversely, he cheated his people and his country, appropriating dishonestly for his own use.Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa had agreed to pay a fine of $42,000 for accepting free tickets to shows and sports events such as Lakers games, in the largest ethics-related fine a California agency had ever imposed. Villaraigosa took tickets to more than 30 events in the five years after he became mayor in 2005, according to documents released on Friday by the California Fair Political Practices Commission. Those included Los Angeles Lakers basketball and Dodgers baseball games, the Academy Awards, a 2009 "American Idol" finale and a Spice Girls concert. What were the reasons of those people above to have the corruption behaviors? They succumb to temptation. When facing with the temptation, they could not resist it. They did not stay from it and keep themselves pure and benign.A line said by Colton Charles goes, …To know the pains of power, we must go to those who have it; to know its pleasure, we must go to those who are seeking it; the pains of power is real, its pleasures imaginary.‟However, for them, they not only received the pains, but also lost their life, reputation and the most important thing, purity heart. 64.1.2 Criminal deed. Most people said that the youth and college students were the hope of the future. There was no denying that they could really be the major roles to build a strong, prosperous country and improve the living conditions of the people. But, some of them could also have the power to destroy the hope, and some of them have been the criminal. The event …my father is Li Gang‟ was still impressed. Li Qiming, the student from Hebei University, drove his car to clash on two girls and killed one of them. Whereas, the tragedy happened, Li Qiming did not feel guilty and regretful. Besides, his attitude was extremly disgusting, being swollen with arrogance. What‟s the worst, when arrested, he shouted, saying, …Do you know who my father is? He is Lin Gang.If you have more power than him, you can accuse me!‟ How arrogant he was!It was obviously that Li Qiming was born in a wealthy family, maybe a family of administration. He lives in such an affluent condition, and he should be raised up as a perfect guy, at least a moral guy. However, he did not. He was influenced by the surroundings he live, the power his father has, and the dark part of the society---desire for money, temptation for power. He has already to lose his way to be purity.Food safety has been paid more and more attention today. The problem of swill-cooked dirty oil, lean meat powder or melamine scare and hurt people a lot. We abuse the business misconduct and business fraud. Yet, the basic reason is that the commercial society enlarges the desire for benefits of the vendors and sales. What they care are money and development of the business. They do not know what is moral or conscience, let alone the pure.No matter the corruption behaviors or the criminal deed, they are all the shadow of some evil role like Fagin and Monks. What they want are power and money. The endless greedy made them crazy. The differences between them are the ways to search it and the extent to own it.England was the most powerful country in the world in the middle of 19century. But the poverty and misfortune of the working class were covered up by those prosperity and wealth. Even women and children should work in poor conditions for a living. In Victorian era, take London as example, the appearance of it was grand. It seemed that the society was gentle with rationality and restraint. However, as a matter of fact, under the luxuriance was oppression and sink of iniquity. The lower class was full of complication.Looking back to our society, without doubt, we live a relatively peaceful life, but, there are still corruption behaviors and criminal deed. We have laws to protect women and children and the poor. But, something happened like that in Oliver Twist.4.2 The inspiration of Oliver Twist on contemporary peopleThere is no doubt that corruption behaviors and criminal deeds are still existing nowaday. But the phenomenons of inspiration of Oliver Twist are also moving us alot.In feudal society, it was common to receive the poverty and suffer the hunger. While in the 21 century, the civil world, starvation and horror are still coming together with our people. There are many children as Oliver around us. They are facing with the problem of losing their family, their school and so on. But they are still looking forward to the goodness. They do not give themselves up and disappoint the world. The poor conditions do not strike them down. As a matter of fact, hope means remaining pure, because they have not polluted by such poor environment. Furthermore, Child beggar, the word that we are familiar with, has the same fortune as Oliver. They have to beg and steal to protect themselves from beating by the human trafficker. Although those children have the bad behaviors, we have not found any evil things in their eyes. Survival pushes them to be the thieves.Another thing moving and shocking us is that more U.S. billionaires pledge to give away wealth.According to China daily, another 17 US billionaires, including Face book co-founders Mark Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskovitz, have pledged to give away at least half their fortunes in a philanthropic campaign led by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. While Buffett pledged in 2006 to give away 99 percent of his wealth to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and family charities. Bill and Melinda Gates have so far donated more than $28 billion of their fortune to their foundation. As we all know, at least in China, the billionaires or the rich man would like to spend their wealth on investing in business or the wealth which will be inherited by their children. Those are general behavior. So, the news is a huge movement to break such traditional actions. The 17 billionaires are compassionate and forgiving. All of them have the purity heart since they did not do the things as others usually do.If we say the spirits of Oliver, Nancy and Maylie are precious, the spirit of the people referring above are more than that. As we all know, the world become more complex since it grows fast with the economic. People must get something to protect themselves from being hurt because they always feel unsafe. Only if they can control the world could they ease. They need power! Therefore, how the children behaved and what the rich men do seem treasurable.Zhou Dunyi and his poem ode to lotus told us that no matter how hard the conditions we live, we can and we should keep purity. The purity does not only mean resistance for corruption or temptation. It also means darkness and the crowd can not remove your decision to be pure and kind.5. ConclusionAlthough the major roles lived in an evil and cruel society, they did not lose their way to being a man with natural kindness. They fight with the darkness. Oliver, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime, suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. But he can still keep pure in his life story. Nancy, a model of sin, sacrificed her life for the sake of Oliver, a boy she barely knew. Another character, Rose, a model of purity, helped Oliver and Nancy voluntarily, though she was bourgeoisie.Returning to our modern world, there are still many criminal deed and corruption behaviors, but on the other side, there are also many contemporary persons like Oliver, Nancy and Rose, who have the purity heart. In Oliver Twist, Dickens mixes grim realism and merciless satire as a way to describe the effects of industrialism on 19th-century England and to criticize the harsh new Poor Laws. However, he presents us another theme on the same way, and that is purity.。

这首试听曲子“Memorial Requim”选自Michael Nyman为1989年的一部电影《THE COOK,THE THIEF,HIS WIFE & HER LOVER》所创作的原声音乐,香港歌手黄耀明在《人山人海》专辑中翻唱了这首“Memorial Requim”,名字叫“友情岁月”。

2、关于"Memorial Requiem" by Michael Nyman
