Part II. (3篇,30分)

Directions: Read the following passages and answer the questions

Passage 1

When I was about six years old, my mother came home one day and

found that I had collected half a dozen babies of the neighborhood –

all of them too young to walk – and had them sitting before me on the floor while I was teaching them to wave their arms. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placing herself at the piano, she began to play for me. This school continued and became very popular. Later on, little girls of the neighborhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a very lucrative(赚钱的) occupation.

My mother took me to a famous ballet teacher, but his lessons did

not please me. When the teacher told me to stand on my toes I asked him why, and when he replied “because it is beautiful,” I said that it was ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream. I dreamed of a different dance. I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key.

My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was owing to the heroic and adventurous

3

spirit of my mother that it was not stifled(压抑的) . I believe that whatever the child is going to do in

life should be begun when it is very young. I wonder how many

parents realize that by the so-called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and depriving them of any chance of doing anything beautiful or original.

1.When her mother came home one day, the narrator of the

story_______.

A. was teaching half a dozen babies to dance

B. was teaching half a dozen babies to walk

C. was collecting babies of the neighborhood

D. was making babies of neighborhood sit before her on the floor

2. The attitude of the narrator’s mother toward her school of dance was one of _________.

A. despise

B. support

C. contempt

D. indifferent

3. The narrator thought that ballet was ________.

A. the most graceful dance

B. a dance that she had dreamed of

C. stiff, ugly and unnatural

D. an invisible world into which she guessed she might enter

4. According to the narrator, she owed her success in art to ______.

A. her inborn talent

B. her ballet teacher

C. the good education her parents gave her

D. the support of her understanding and adventurous mother

5. The central idea of the passage is that _________.

A. parents should try to discover the natural gift in their children and help to develop it while they

are young

B. the so-called good education parents give their children only drives them into the commonplace

C. mother should be heroic and adventurous

D. ballet is no good as a form of dance.

Passage 2

Dreams have always held a universal fascination(魅力). Some

primitive societies believe that the

soul leaves the body and visits the scene of the dream. Generally, however, dreams are accepted to illusions, having much in common with daydreams. When dreaming one tends to believe fully in the reality of the dream world, however inconsistent, illogical and odd it may be.

Although most dreams happen without apparent cause, dream activity may be provoked(刺激)

by external influences. “Suffocation(窒息)”dreams are connected with the breathing difficulties of

a heavy cold, for instance. Internal disorders such as indigestion can cause vivid dreams, and dreams of racing fire engines may be caused by the ringing of an alarm bell.

Experiments have been carried out to investigate the connection between intentionally inflicted pain and dreaming. For example, sleeper pricked(刺)with a pin perhaps dreams of fighting a battle

and receiving a severe sword wound. Although the dream is stimulated by the physical discomfort, the actual events of the dream depend on the associations of the discomfort in the mind of the sleeper.

A dreamer’s eyes often move rapidly from side to side. Since people born blind do not dream visually and do not show this activity, it is thought that the dreamer may be scanning the scene represented in his dreams. If a sleeper is roused every time his eyes begin to move fast, actually depriving (打断) him of his dreams, he will make more eye movements the following night. Thus, a

4

certain amount of dreaming seems to be a human requirement.

6. Dreams _________.

D. are much in common with daydreams

A. he may dream he has been suffocated

B. he may dream he has been stabbed.

C. he may dream he is fighting a battle

D. he may dream he has caught a heavy cold

10. Which of the following is true?

B. Dreaming is probably necessary.

C. Sighted people and those who have never been able to see dream in exactly the same way.

D. Eye movements help sleepers see the real world in life.

Passage 3

Increasingly, over the past ten years, people – especially young people – have become aware of

the need to change their eating habits, because much of the food they eat is not good for the health. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in natural foods: foods which do not contain chemical additives(添加剂) and which have not been affected by chemical

fertilizers widely used in farming today.

Natural foods, for example, are vegetables, fruit and grain which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic matter. In simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished(培育) by unused vegetable matter, which provides it with essential vitamins (维生

素)and minerals. This in itself is a

natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers, the main purpose of which is to increase the amount – but not the quality – of foods grown in commercial farming area.

Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy pastures(牧场). Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry(家禽): there are battery farms, for example, where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food; they also produce eggs which lack important vitamins.

B. Natural foods include the plants growing in soil and animals moving freely in healthy

pastures

C. Natural foods are generally affected by chemical fertilizers.

D. Natural foods contain all the essential vitamins and minerals as required by the human body.

19. According to the passage, the use of chemicals and fertilizers ________.

A. will not necessarily increase the production of foods

B. is good way to improve the quality of foods

C. promotes the foods both in quality and in quantity

D. is harmful to the health

20. Battery chickens can’t be called “natural food” because

You will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and decide whether each of the statements is true or false, or that the information is not given in the passage. Then mark the answer on the Answer Sheet. Renewable Energy How does energy use affect the environment? All forms of electricity generation have some level of environmental impact. However, clean energy technologies, including renewable energy and combined heat and power, have fewer impacts than other sources of electricity generation. To learn about the environmental impacts of electricity generation technologies, click on an energy source below. How clean is the electricity I use? In the United States, electricity is generated in many different ways, with a wide variation in environmental impact. Traditional methods of electricity production contribute to air quality problems and the risk of global climate change. With the advent of electric customer choice, many electricity customers can now choose the source of their electricity. In fact, you might now have the option of choosing cleaner, more environmentally friendly sources of energy. How can I make a difference? The energy decisions we make every day can encourage the development of new power sources, save natural resources, and help ensure that the quality of our environment is preserved. In many parts of the country, consumers now have the opportunity to choose the source of the power that is delivered to their home or business—including energy derived from renewable sources. "Renewable energy" generally refers to electricity supplied from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power (energy supplied by the sun), geothermal (energy created from the extreme heat contained in liquid rock—called magma(岩浆)—within the Earth's core), hydropower (energy derived from the movement of water as it flows downstream), and various forms of biomass (fuel from sources such as trees, wood and agricultural wastes and fuel crops). These energy sources are considered renewable because they are continuously replenished on the Earth. In addition, mobile sources of air pollution—such as cars, trucks, trains and lawnmowers—also contribute to air pollution nationwide and are an important source of air pollution in many urban areas. Hydrogen Energy Using hydrogen energy could help address many concerns facing our nation and our world. We believe hydrogen can contribute to resolving these issues for these reasons:
