AA mum saved her daughter’s life with her newly learnt first aid skills. Sonya had only just attended one first aid class the day before when she found herself needing to use the skills on her three-year-old daughter Tilly.Sonya, who also has a son Emmen, attended the first aid course at Lune Park Children’s Centre. Then she was faced with every parent’s worst nightmare when Tilly went blue in the face and stopped breathing. But thanks to her newly acquired skills, Sonya saved Tilly’s life.Sonya said: “Tilly was playing with her brother and they were fighting over a toy. Emmen won the fight. Tilly fell backwards and her head was hit. She was face down and shaking and at first I thought she was upset. But then I saw she was blue in the face and had stopped breathing. I reacted without thinking and immediately started using the first aid skills I had learnt the day before. I began doing mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions (胸外按压). It probably took about a minute before Tilly started breathing again, but to me it felt like a lifetime.”After getting Tilly breathing again, Sonya called an ambulance and the doctors came. Since then, Tilly has been diagnosed (诊断) with Reflex Anoxic Seizure (反射缺氧发作). Sonya said: “The seizure can happen when there’s any unexpected pain, fear or fright. It is just so lucky that the day before it happened, I had been practicingfirst aid. I am just so glad I did the course and learnt the first aid skills. The first great invention was one that is still very important today - the wheel. This invention made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances. In the early 1800s the world started to change. There was little unknown land in the world. People began to work to make life better. In the 19th century, many great inventions were made. Among them were the cameras and the light bulbs. There were more great inventions in the early 20th century, such as the helicopters in 1907, movies with sound in 1910 and jet planes in the 1930s. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon (尼龙)came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear.By this time most people have had a very good life. Man has a desire to explore more. The world was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Since then other countries, including the United States and China, have made their steps into space. In 1969, man took his biggest step. An American first walked on the moon. A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They decided that miscommunications were always possible, even over something as simple as “yes”and “no”.On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked,“Do you have cold drinks?”The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means“yes”.Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was known for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?”He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”.Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some students had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes”or “no”.8. These Americans teaching English in other countries found that they ______.A. should go abroad for vacationsB. needed to learn foreign languagesC. should often discuss their experiencesD. had problems with communications9.People in Micronesia show “yes”by ______.A. nodding headsB. raising eyebrowsC. shaking headsD. saying “no”10.Tom misunderstood his class at first because______.A. he did not know much about Indian cultureB. he didn’t explain everything clearly enoughC. some students didn’t understand his questionsD. he didn’t know where the students came from11.The passage is mainly about______.A. body language in foreign restaurantsB. class discussion in Indian schoolsC. miscommunication in different culturesD. English teaching in other countriesDMost young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be game of some kind football, hockey, golf, or tennis. It may be mountaineering(登山).Those who have a passion(热情)for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is causedprobably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their spare time.Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. There are, it is true, no 'matches' between 'teams' of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.A mountain climber continues to improve skills year by year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with mere skills and less waste of effort, and they can certainly experience equal enjoyment.12. Mountaineering involves____.A. coldB. hardshipC. physical riskD. all of the above13. The difference between a sport and a game has to do with the kind of _____.A. activityB. rulesC. uniformD. participants14. Mountaineering can be called a team sport because_____.A. it is an Olympic eventB. teams compete against each otherC. mountaineers depend on each other while climbingD. there are 5 climbers on each team15. Which of the following might be the best title?A. How to Climb High MountainsB. Mountain ClimbersC. Challenging Sports ActivitiesD. Mountaineering第二节阅读填空(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。

As it is, I have a garden full of sweet-smelling roses for most of the year. bushes must be pruned(剪枝) in early spring, leaving ugly woody branches until the new growth appears a few weeks later. It was the space available(可用的) in the garden that led me into planting just one little tomat o plant. A big mistake.Soil conditions made just perfect for roses turn out to be even more perfect for tomatoes. The daily watering coupled with ful l sun and regular fertilizing(施肥) have turned the little plant into a tall bush. The cage I plac ed around it as the plant grew has long since disappeared un der the thick leaves. Now the task I face in harvesting the fruit is twofold; First, I ha ve to find the red ones among the leaves, which means I almo st have to stand on my head, and once found I have to reach down and under, pick the tomatoes and withdraw(缩回) my full fist without dropping the prize so dearly won. I foun d two full-blown white roses completely hidden as I picked tomatoes in June, but they were weak and the leaves already yellow for la ck of light. Here I am faced with a painful small decision: To tear up a wo nderful and productive tomato plant that offers up between te n and twenty ripe sweet tomatoes each day or say goodbye to several expensive and treasured roses. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive (存活)if the rain is spread throughout the year, If it falls within oneor two months and the rest of the year is dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high. There is, however, much more to a desert than sand. In the deserts of the southwestern United States, cliffs (悬崖) and deep valleys were formed from thick mud that once lay beneath a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand, rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing—very, very slowly —as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock. Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that have adapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.9.Many plants may survive in deserts when_____________.A. it is dry all the year roundB. the rain falls only in a few weeksC. there is little rain in a yearD. the rain is spread out in a year10.Sand dunes are formed when_____________.A. sand piles up graduallyB. there is plenty of rain in a yearC. the sea has dried up over the yearsD. pieces of rock get smaller11.It can be learned from the text that in a desert____________.A. there is no rainfall throughout the yearB. life exists in rough conditionsC. all sand dunes are a few feet highD. rocks are worn away only by wind and heatDWhen I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.He listened to me quietly, then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused t o take it. “That’s just for you,”he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of hel p to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. He still couldn’t think of what he wanted his Christmas gift to be. He wondered how Father Christmas would know what to bring him if he didn’t know himself. As he was sitting up in bed, Bunny heard a big noise on the roof and a sound downstairs. It was Father Christmas, he realized. Bunny jumped out of bed and raced down the hall to the stairs hoping to have a look at the old man with his own eyes.By the time Bunny reached the bottom of the stairs, though, everything was again silent. Beautiful gifts were piled under the Christmas tree, but Father Christmas was gone. He looked for him for a few minutes, but it was already too late. Bunny turned to climb back upstairs when he heard a cry.“Hello,” said Bunny. “Is somebody there?”He was answered by another cry. Bunny looked around the big pile of gifts to see what was making the noise. Right under the tree was a funny-looking brown animal with big feet and sad eyes. Bunny might have m istaken it for a dog, if it hadn’t been for the antlers (鹿角) on its head.“Are you a reindeer (驯鹿)?” asked Bunny.“Yes,” replied the animal, “my name is Ralph.”“And you were pulling Father Christmas’ sled?”“I was until I got airsick,” replied Ralph, “I’m afraid I wasn’t cut out for the job. Now I’m stuck here and I don’t know how to get back to the North Pole.”“Well, if you like, you can stay with us as a friend,” said Bunny. But in the earthquake capitals of the world —Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey —rats will soon be man’s best friends. What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why?Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big a nd they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal. This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christia n Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need e lectricity! The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).8.In the world earthquake capitals, rats will become man’s best friends because they can ________.A.replace man’s rescue jobsB.find the position of people alive who are trapped in buildingsC.serve as food for people alive who are trapped in buildingsD.get into small spaces9.From the third paragraph we know the rescuers can judge a person who is alive by ________.A.the noise made by the rat B.the rat’s unusual behavior C.the signal sent by the radio on the rat’s back D.the smell given off by the person10.Rats have all the following advantages EXCEPT that ________.A. they are more fantastic than other animalsB. they are less expensive to train than dogsC.they don’t need electricity D. they are small and can get into small places11.After reading the passage we know ________.A.at present rats have replaced dogs in searching for peopleB.the “rat project” has been com pletedC.people are now happy to see a rat in a buildingD.now people still use dogs and robots in performing rescuesDSeverely disabled people may soon be able to use their noses to write, drive a wheelchair or surf the Internet, thanks to a device developed by doctors in Israel. The device will be used by breathing in and out through the nose, according to a study. Healthy people who tested the device quickly learned to play computer games and write sentences by sniffing. Encouraged by the results, the researchers decided to test their device on people who are paralyzed (瘫痪) but whose intelligence remains normal. Ten paralyzed who tested the device quickly learned to use their noses to write words, open a webpage, copy words and put them into a search engine. With their success in helping severely disabled people to communicate, the researchers decided to make use of the new technology to design an electric wheelchair to be driven by sniffs.Ten healthy people easily mastered sniff—driving a wheelchair through a maze (迷宫), and a 30-year-old man who had been paralyzed from the neck down for six years was as good a sniff-driver as the healthy participants at his second attempt. In other words, a paralyzed person could use the sniff controller to drive an electric wheelchair. At the moment, sniff-controlled technology is still in the stage of development, and the Weizmann Institute has already made a request for a patent(专利) on the device. “I’ll be very happy if it can help us to make money, but the real problem is that I hope someone will develop it, because this would help a lot of people,”said Sobel, one of the lead researchers of the study.12. What’s the purpose of t he passage?A. To introduce a new invention.B. To equip the disabled with life skills.C. To show the nose's special functions.D. To instruct doctors to demanda patent.13. In the test, the paralyzed people with normal intelligence can use their nose to ______.A. type long sentences quicklyB. play computer games easilyC. enter a website without much difficultyD. communicate with others successfully14. With the help of the sniffing device, a 30-year-old disabled man ______.A. spent six years learning how to drive a wheelchairB. failed to drive through the maze at his first attemptC. took the wheelchair controlled by healthy participantsD. managed to drive an electric wheelchair by sniffing15. From the last paragraph, we can infer that the sniff-controlled technology ______.A. will be applied to other fields of researchB. needs further developing to serve more peopleC. has become an important patented inventionD. shows the wisdom and talents of Israel doctors第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。

My Writing TeacherEnglish writing was always easy for me, but that changed on the first day I walked into Mrs. Johnson’s class. Before that, I’d heard rumors from former students. They said she was strict and her class was hard to pass. So I was very nervous. The first time we met, Mrs. Johnson told us her class would be difficult, but she would give us new “tools”and guide us through. She explained that her grading system was different, and that we would not see high scores soon. “Everything you do in class matters,”she said. “As writing is an art, it takes a long time to perfect.”Mrs. Johnson scared me. I was afraid of what she would say if I asked a question. So in class I kept silent most of the time and couldn’t follow her. When I got my first essay back, my grade was terrible. I was annoyed with Mrs. Johnson. I disliked going to her class. Then I realized I needed to find out what I could do to improve my grade and how to use the “tools” in my writing. As I still didn’t dare to talk to Mrs. Johnson in person, I e-mailed her. In this way, she and I worked together to improve my writing. By and by, I could talk to her both online and in person. She walked me through every step to understand how to write an essay. Together we saw improvement in my work. From this I discovered that asking for help could actually work. The kilt is clearly very famous across the world. It seems that everybody has heard of it, and that most people have seen a picture of a man wearing one.People ’s knowledge and ideas about Scotsmen wearing these funny kilts come from films and television. Every time people from other countries ask about the kilt, they mention Mel Gibson’s film, Braveheart. In many countries, there are television programs about Scotland. These programs always include information or images of men in kilts.Of course, in Scotland, you will often see the kilt. The reality is, though, that you will most commonly see it in tourist areas. The main streets and tourist areas of Scotland always have a Scotsman wearing a kilt and all tourist shops in the country sell kilts in different colors. But kilts are not something that Scottish people see every day. Kilts are for special occasions, such as weddings, funerals and other big and important events. Scotsmen do not put on their kilt just to buy a bottle of milk and a loaf of bread at the local supermarket. The reason for this may be that kilts are very expensive. When a man wears a kilt, he normally wears it with a special shirt, jacket, socks and shoes. This is obviously not cheap. In fact, an average kilt outfit (全套服装) costs around £500.11. B Last Friday, after doing all the family shopping in town I wanted a rest before catching the train, so I bought a newspaper and some chocolate and went into the station coffee shop. It was a cheap self-service place with long table to keep a place and went to get a cup of coffee. When I came back with the coffee, there was someone in the next seat. It was one of those wild-looking boys, with dark glasses and old clothes, and his hair was colored bright red at the front. What did surprise me was that he’d started to eat my chocolate. I thought, well, I should have the last piece. And I got it. The boy gave me a strange look, and then stood up. As he left he shouted out, “There is something wrong with the woman,” Everybody looked at me. That was embarrassing enough, but it was worse when I finished my coffee and got ready to leave.
