The world famous Taj Mahal stands nearby the Yamuna River and was built for Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite wife of the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan. There is a beautiful love story of the Mughal emperor and his wife.

In, or about 1628 AD, Shah Jahan became an emperor. Earlier he was married to a beautiful Persian princess, Arjumand Bano Begum, who came to be known as Mumtaz Mahal. The emperor loved his wife so much that he always provided her with the best. In 1631 AD, the emperor set off a long trip with his wife. On the way there, his wife died while giving birth to their 14th child. Before she died, she asked for four promises from the emperor:

1. to build the most beautiful monument for her;

2. not to remarry;

3. to be kind to their children;

4. to visit her tomb every year.

From then on, the story of the Taj Mahal began when the emperor decided to meet his wife’s wishes. Construction began and it took 22 years and as many as 20,000 people to finish it. It cost nearly 40 million rupees and 500 kg of gold. The white marble monument was designed in Persian Style and it really showed the emperor’s love for his wife.

I’m Graham Hughes, from Britain. Four years ago, I decided to travel alone to every country in the world. Every morning, a woman baked bread for her and her family and an extra piece for a hungry passer-by. She would always put the extra piece of bread on the window still.
