And, as Denmark recently won the title of “the happiest country in the world”, the concept of hygge is known to more and more people interested in finding ways to understand this concept.Hygge —originally from a Norwegian word meaning well-being —doesn’t have an exact equivalent (等同物) in English. It’s often translated as coziness, or as blogger Anna West told the BBC, “coziness of the soul”. But, as professor Maren Spark explains, “Hygge was never meant to be translated. It was meant to be felt.”Basically, hygge involves creating a warm, cosy atmosphere and enjoying it with your loved ones. Danish winters are long and dark and so achieving hygge is particularly relevant during this season. A typical Hygge activity during winter could be enjoying delicious homemade food and light-hearted conversation with friends —preferably in the warm glow of candlelight, or maybe sipping a glass of wine in the hot tub after a day spent skiing. However, hygge isn’t only limited to the cold winter months —it can also describe that warm, fuzzy feeling you get after a walk through a forest with fr iends on summer’s day or a family barbecue in the park. Hygge is meant to be shared.1.The author asks the readers to imagine the scene in the first paragraph to_________ .A. help the readers to calm downB. introduce the topic of the passageC. present the main idea of the passageD. remind the readers of their past memories2.What do the underlined words by Maren Spark mean?A. The translation of the word “hygge” is not good enough.B. Only Danish speakers know what “hygge” means.C. “Hygge” is easy to t ranslate but hard to feel.D. We can get the true meaning of “hygge” by feeling it.3.Which of the following can be best described as a “hygge” activity?A. Skiing in the cold winter months.B. Living through long dark winters.C. Taking afternoon tea with friends.D. Walking alone in the forest.4.The author writes this passage to_________.A. explainB. persuadeC. commentD. advertiseⅡ.完形填空(2016·郑州第二次质量预测)I had just started my second year studying at Cambridge University when I was faced with the news I had never expected.A lump in my neck 1 out to be cancer.I would 2 six months of chemotherapy(化疗).After the shock,I was struck by this thought:my 3 didn’t have any room for cancer.I had so much I wanted to 4 and so many goals I wanted to chase.I was faced with the 5 job of telling my friends and family. Then,I had to decide whether to 6 in Cambridge and take five exams at the end of the year.My doctor 7 against it,and so did my parents and teachers. My doctors and teachers convinced me that taking some time off to 8 and relax would be the best thing for me.I could not think of anything 9 .I did not want to 10 a year of my life, receiving pity from those around me.Together with my parents,I tried to persuade the university to 11 me to stay at Cambridge and study only half the course. At the end of the year I would take two exams. It was really a 12 to persuade them to agree.Treatment began and I was up and down from Cambridge to London every other week.It made me feel13 ,but to a much lesser degree than I had expected.I was 14 to read, eat and socialize exactly asI used to.I slept a lot and rested a lot,but I also worked hard at my studies. It gave me focus, and it also gave me pleting my 15 at the end of the term felt like a great personal victory.I took a 16 to continue studying while undergoing treatment, and it 17 .I was successful in my exams—and more 18 ,I made a full recovery.Every person facing a disease like cancer must make the 19 that are right for them.I am 20 that I made the decision that was right for me.1.A.stuck B.cameC.turnedD.worked2.A.require B.expectC.senseD.arrange3.A.body B.memoriesC.familyD.dreams4.A.face B.achieveC.showD.understand5.A.necessary B.temporaryC.difficultD.disappointing6.A.join B.treatC.settleD.continue7.A.fought B.advisedC.actedD.decided8.A.recover B.exerciseC.studyD.play9.A.better B.worseC.moreD.less10.A.save B.spendC.takeD.miss11.A.help B.remindC.allowD.invite12.A.struggle B.failureC.burdenD.trouble13.A.tired B.relaxedC.confidentD.nervous14.A.afraid B.readyC.ableD.eager15.A.purpose B.projectsC.treatmentD.exams16.A.rest B.riskC.privilegeD.job17.A.ended up B.passed onC.paid offD.broke out18.A.clearly B.interestinglyC.specificallyD.importantly19.A.choices B.changesC.effortsD.chances20.A.surprised B.excitedC.determinedD.proudⅢ. 短文改错(2016·太原一模)Yesterday my friend Julia and me had lunch in the Pizza Hut behind our school.I knew Julia wasn’t crazy about pizzas, but she came along just because me.At the table next to ours, there were two guys from our class. One of them was real funny. He tried to imitate all the customer in the Pizza Hut.We couldn’t stop to laughing. And there were some people whom did not like the fact that two boys were imitating them. They complained to an owner of the Pizza Hut,so he came over and tell them to stop.Seeing it,Julia and I was greatly embarrassed.考点规范练(必修5Unit1)本文讲述的是Susan和Larry开车去度假的途中讨论是否停车用餐的一段对话。

Unit 1 Great Scientists一、阅读理解。

Animals use many tricks to hide from predators(捕食性动物).While different, they are all visual animals. Now scientists have uncovered a fish species that uses both visual and chemical disguise(伪装).Rohan Brooker, one of the researchers who made the discovery said that he first thought of the idea after reading about a species which takes on the smell of the plant that it eats. Thus, its predators, ants walk right over it.Since Harlequin Filefish are picky eaters that feed totally off the Acropora—a beautiful species of blue/purple coral,Brooker theorized that they too may be using a similar trick to fool their predators. To test his theory,Brooker's team acquired some filefish from the Great Barrier Reef and divided them into two groups. For the next four weeks, one group fed on their normal diet of the Acropora coral, while the other fed on the Pocillopora coral. In order to test if there was any difference in the way they smelled, the researchers did another experiment. They found the smells from the two groups were different. But there was still a question of whether the smell was strong enough to protect the fish from their natural predators. To test that,Brooker's team added a predatory species of cod(鳕鱼)to the mix.Sure enough, the cod that were placed in the tank containing the fish fed on the Pocillopora coral were immediately able to sense them.In contrast, the cod in the tank where the fish had been fed on their natural diet—the Acropora coral, appeared oblivious to their existence and instead spent much of their time inside the tank's caves. This confirmed the team's suspicion that the filefish have figured out how to give off the smell of the Acropora coral to avoid being detected by predators. While the smellbased disguise had been previ ously observed in some species of fresh water, this study was the first to prove that the fish's diet was the source of this disguise.Though the theory has only been tested on Harlequin Filefish,Brooker suspects that this kind of chemical disguise is fairly commonamong sea animals.Sure it gives a whole new meaning to the saying—“You are what you eat!”1.The underlined word “oblivious” in Paragraph 3 may mean “________”.A.ignorant B.sensitiveC.allergic D.cautious2.What statement may Brooker agree to?A.Freshwater fish all know the role of smell.B.Sea animals use smell to cheat their enemies.C.The smellbased disguise may work occasionally.D.Humans are really what kind of fish they eat.3.What is the passage mainly about?A.A way to fight against predators.B.A smell trick of all sea animals.C.A fish smells like the coral.D.Filefish in the Great Barrier Reef.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了一项关于Harlequin Filefish如何通过自身的伪装来抵御捕食性动物的研究。

2019年高考英语一轮复习Unit1GreatScientists押题专练(含解析)新人教版必修5 (1)

Great Scientists李仕才第一节阅读理解AAbout 1.3 billion years ago, two massive black holes hit each other and formed a new one. The energy set free by the collision created a ripple(波纹) in the space-time structure and spread outward in gravitational waves (引力波).Then, on September 14,2015, a group of scientists discovered the waves. On February 11, an announcement came from the Laser Interferometer GravitationalWave Observatory (LIGO) in the US that, for the very first time, a gravitational wave was directly observed and recorded. “We discovered gravitational waves. We did it,” David Reitze, the director of LIGO, said in the press conference on February 11. “It's exactly what Einstein's theory of general relativity predicted.”Einstein's 1915 theory reimagined the framework for the universe. According to Einstein, the framework for the universe—or the spacetime structure—is not fixed,But changed by matter and energy “i n a way a heavy sleeper causes a mattress to sag(床垫下凹), producing the effect we call gravity”, explains a New York Times article.“A disturbance in the universe could cause spacetime to become larger, break into pieces and even move up and down, like a mattress shaking when that sleeper rolls over, producing ripples of gravity: gravitational waves,” explains the article.Compared with the other three forces in the universe(electromagnetism, the weak nuclear force and the strong nuclear force), gravity is relatively weak, making gravitational waves hard to discover. The discovery by LIGO would open a new chapter in astronomy. “Everything else in astronomy is like the eye,” Szabolcs Marka, a Columbia University professor, told The New York Times.“Finally, astronomy grew ears. We never had ears before.”篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。

It took the teenager seven months and over 1,500 hours to create a plastic model of his“smart gun”.He entered his fingerprint handgun in a local science fair and won.His award included a financial prize. He received$50,000.The money is to support improvement in gun safety. Kai Kloepfer is now 18 years old.He has been using the grant money to improve the technology. He says the weapon he designed doesn't change the function of a firearm at all.It just makes it safer. He is now working to add the fingerprint lock technology to a real gun.He says he expects to one day see his “smart gun”for sale next to other firearms. The young man plans to spend the next year improving his fingerprint handgun. Then he will start college at one of the world's top universities—the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 1.Why does Kai Kloepfer try to invent the gun? A.To prevent people from buying guns. B.To protect people's lives. C.To limit functions of a gun. D.To reduce power of a gun. 2.The gun created by Kai Kloepfer is controlled by the owner's fingerprint to ________. A.keep it convenient to use B.make it safe to carry around C.protect its owner from harm D.avoid being used by others 3.How is the progress of Kai Kloepfer's gun invention? A.It is being shown in a fair. B.It is under further research. C.It will soon come into the market. D.It needs designing once again. 4.What's Kai Kloepfer's wish for his fingerprint gun? A.It will bring enough money for him. B.It will replace traditional guns. C.It can be sold on the market. D.It can help forbid the use of guns. 【解题导语】本篇文章是记叙文,讲述了美国一名科技爱好青年Kai Kloepfer改良枪支的故事。1.B 考查推理判断。根据第二段的“Hearing of so many gun attacks, he decided to use his skills to help prevent mass shootings”和第三段的“He decided to create a gun designed to prevent accidental shootings”可推知,选项B“为了保护人们的生命”是正确的,所以选B。2.D 考查推理判断。根据第三段的“The gun Kai Kloepfer designed only works when unlocked by the fingerprint of the owner, and not by anyone else. The gun only recognizes the touch of its owner”可知,Kai Kloepfer设计的枪只有枪的主人用指纹才能打开,而其他任何人都无法使用该枪。这支枪只识别其主人的触摸。因此选项D“避免被别人使用”正确。3.B 考查推理判断。根据第五段的“He has been using the grant money to improve the technology”和“He is now working to add the fingerprint lock technology to a real gun”可知,他一直在使用这笔奖金来提高技术,并致力于把指纹锁技术运用到真枪中。选项B“手枪的技术正在深入研究之中”是可以推理出来的,所以选B。4.C 考查细节理解。根据第五段的“He says he expects to one day see his ‘smart gun’for sale next to other firearms”可知,他期待有一天看到他的智能手枪像其他枪一样被出售,所以选C。二、单句语法填空1.Only when he arrived ________the meeting begin. 答案:did “only+状语(从句)”位于句首,句子要部分倒装。由时间状语从句when he arrived可知,应用一般过去时,故填did。2.Neither I nor John ________(be) tired of the speech.
