难度:★Last summer my wife and I went on a vacation, and I also planned to do some studying while we were away. I carefully put all my important papers and books into a large paper bag, and put it in the car with the suitcases. After a long drive to Los Angeles, we were happy to find a very affordable motel (汽车旅

馆). We decided to stay for a week so they could give us another three days for free.

On the second day, we arrived back at the motel after a day of sightseeing and I decided to start working, but I couldn’t find my paper bag. It had disappeared! The maid must have taken it out with the garbage, so I ran over to the main office, and asked if I could talk to the maid who had been on duty that day. They told me there were several, and that they had all left for the day.

I was very disappointed and walked through the dark to where the garbage bins were. There were three of them and each one was about four and a half feet high. I spent some time looking through bags and bags of other people’s garbage, but I didn’t have any luck. I took one last look into the other two bins, this time just checking the bags on top. Mr. Coyote finally came out and put himself together but couldn’t find his eyes. He couldn’t let other animals know he was blind. He then put two rose petals (花瓣) in for his eyes. This would cover the blindness for a little while.

Mr. Snail saw Mr. Coyote with the rose petals in his eyes. He wanted to try this, so he took off his eyes and put them into Mr. Coyote’s hands and tried putting the rose petals in his eyes. Then Mr. Coyote put Mr. Snail’s eyes into his head and ran off quickly.

urgency (紧急) and getting things done quickly, but there are some moments that you have to slow down and enjoy life.

We are always busy every day. I work 8.5 to 9 hours a day at my full-time job. When I get home I make an effort to write something on my blog. I try to find a bit of time for myself. I seldom work or write on the weekend. Those are my days to try to recharge and reduce the stress from my work. I sleep on the sofa a bit during the day, drink a few beers in the open air or go out for a picnic if the weather permits (许可).

What I’m trying to say is this: if you don’t take some time to slow down once in a while and enjoy life, it will pass you by. You can be unhealthy both mentally (精神上地) and physically if you don’t take the time to relax. So this weekend, don’t make any plans. Just get up on Saturday morning when your body says it’s time to get up. Make some coffee, step outside and get some fresh morning air, turn on the radio and prepare yourself for nothing. 62. 阅读附加题

(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

An earthquake is a trembling or shaking of the ground caused by the sudden release (释放) of energy stored in the rocks below the surface. Generally, earthquakes last only seconds. Strong ground shaking during a medium to large earthquake generally lasts about 10 to 30 seconds. Aftershocks (余震) can occur once in a while for weeks or even months.

Many people think that there is an "earthquake season"or a kind of "earthquake weather". As a matter of fact, there isn’t. Earthquakes can occur at any time of the year and at any time of the day or night. Earthquakes occur under all weather conditions —sunny, wet, hot, or cold —without any special weather tendency (倾向).

Also, you don’t need to worry that the ground will open up and swallow people when earthquakes occur. Open ground cracks may form during an earthquake —related, for example, to land sliding or ground falling; however, such cracks tend to be open gaps (间隙) (they don’t "swallow") that a person could stand in afterwards.

The safest place in an earthquake is in an open field because buildings and falling objects can injure or kill you. If you are indoors, when you feel the ground start to shake, take cover immediately under a table or strong piece of furniture, placing something between falling objects and yourself. Do not attempt to use the stairs or an elevator to get out of the building.1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the pas-

sage?A. Earthquakes usually last 10 to 30 seconds.B. After a big earthquake, there are many more quakes.C. Cracks in an earthquake are very dangerous.D. What usually injures people during an earthquake are

falling buildings.2. The reason why there isn’t "earthquake weather"is that

______.A. an earthquake only lasts seconds and doesn’t happen

frequentlyB. an earthquake can happen at any time and in any kind

of weatherC. when an earthquake happens is related to the weatherD. earthquakes don’t change with the seasons3. The underlined word "swallow"in Paragraph 3 probably means "________".A. take sb. / sth. inB. make sb. frightenedC. make room for sb. to stand in

D. make the ground slide4. During an earthquake, which of the following things

should you NOT do?A. Find an open field and stay there.B. Stay away from buildings.C. Take cover under a table.

D. Take an elevator. 5. The purpose of writing this passage is to ______.

A. tell people what an earthquake is

B. argue if there really is "earthquake weather"

C. tell us about the earthquake and what to do when it

happensD. give us some suggestions on what to do during an

高一英语人教版必修三unit1课文内容

Unit 1 Festivals around the world FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS Festivals and celebrations of all kinds have been held everywhere since ancient times. Most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Sometimes celebrations would be held after hunters had caught animals. At that time people would starve if food was difficult to find, especially during the cold winter months. Today’s festivals have many origins, some religious, some seasonal, and some for special people or events. Festivals of the dead Some festivals are held to honour the dead or to satisfy the ancestors, who might return either to help or to do harm. For the Japanese festival Obon, people should go to clean graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They also light lamps and play music because they think that will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico, people celebrate the Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people eat food in the shape of skulls and cakes with “bones” on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The Western holiday Halloween also had its origin in old beliefs about the return of the spirits of dead people. It is now a children’s festival, when they can dress up and go to their neighbours’ homes to ask for sweets. If the neighbours do not give any sweets, the children might play a trick on them. Festivals to Honour People Festivals can also be held to honour famous people. The Dragon Boat Festival in China honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Y uan. In the USA, Columbus Day is in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World. India has a national festival on October 2 to honour Mohandas Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain. Harvest Festivals Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter and the agricultural work is over. In European countries, people will usually decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and will get together to have meals. Some people might win awards for their farm produce, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. China and Japan have mid-autumn festivals when people admire the moon and in China enjoy moon-cakes. Spring Festivals The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat and may give children lucky money in red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the Lunar New Year together. Some Western countries have very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. These carnivals might include parades, dancing in the streets day and night, loud music and colourful clothing of al kinds. Easter is an important religious and social festival for Christians around the world. It celebrates the return of Jesus from the dead and the coming of spring and new life. Japan’s Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later. The country, covered with cherry tree flowers, looks as though it is covered with pink snow. People love to get together to eat, drink and have fun with each other. Festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our work for a little while.

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly dise ase of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.
