Bernice Gallego sat down one day this

summer, as she does pretty much every day,

and began listing items on eBay. She dug

into a box and pulled out a baseball card. She

stopped for a moment and admired the

picture. “Red Stocking B. B. Club of

Cincinnati,” the card read, under the reddish-

brown color photo of 10 men with their

socks pulled up to their knees.

As a collector and seller, it's her job to

spot old items that might have value today,It’s what Bernice, 72, and her husband, Al Gallego, 80, have been doing since 1974 at their California antique store. This card, she figured, was worth selling on eBay.She took a picture, wrote a description and put it up for auction She put a $10 price tag on it, deciding against $15 because it would have cost her an extra 20 cents.Later that night she got a few odd inquiries—someone wanting to know whether the card was real, someone wanting her to end the auction and sell him the card immediately.

The card is actually 139 years old.Sports card collectors call the find "extremely rare" and estimate the card could fetch five, or perhaps, six figures at auction.Just like that, Bemice is the least likely character ever for a rare-baseball card story."I didn't even know baseball existed that far back," Gallego says, "I don't think that I've ever been to a baseball game." The theory is that the card came out of a storage space they bought a few years back.It is not uncommon in their line of work to buy the entire contents of storage units for around $200.

When she met with card trader Rick Mirigian, she found out what the card was—an 1869 advertisement with a picture of the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

"When I came to meet her and she took it out of a sandwich bag and she was smoking a cigarette, I almost fainted," Mirigian says“They’ve uncovered a piece of history that few people will ever be able to imagine. That card is history.I t's like

unearthing a Mona Lisa or a Picasso."

24.What can we conclude from Paragraph 3?

A.Bernice wanted to end the auction that night.

B.Bernice decided to sell the card for $15.

C.Bernice had to pay some fees for her card on eBay

D.eBay charged her 20 cents for the card.

A.Bernice unexpectedly became the owner of the rare-baseball card

B.Bernice is the last person to purchase the rare-baseball card

Researchers in the field of psychology have found

that one of the best ways to make an important decision,

such as choosing a university to attend or a business to

invest in, involves the use of a decision worksheet.

Psychologists compare the actual decisions made by

people to theoretical ideal decisions to see how similar

they are. Supporters of the worksheet procedure believe

that it will help people make optimal, that is, the best

decisions. Although there are several changes on the exact forms that worksheets can take, they are all similar in their essential aspects. Worksheets require defining the problem in a clear way and then listing all possible solutions to the problem. Next, the related considerations that will be affected by each decision are listed, and the relative importance of each consideration or consequence is determined. Each consideration is assigned a numerical(数字的) value to reflect its relative importance. A decision is mathematically calculated by adding these values together. The alternative with the highest number of points comes out as the best decision.

Since most important problems are multifaceted (多方面的), there are several alternatives to choose from, each with unique advantages and disadvantages. One of the benefits of a pencil and paper decision-making procedure is that it permits people to deal with more variables(可变因素) than their minds can generally comprehend and remember. On the average, people can keep about seven ideas in their minds at once. A worksheet can be especially useful when the decision involves a large number of variables with complex relationships. A realistic example for many college students is the question “What will I do after graduation?” A graduate might seek a position that offers specialized training, pursue an advanced degree, or travel abroad for a year. A decision-making worksheet begins with a clear statement of the problem that will also help to narrow it. It is important to be clear about the distinction between

long-range and immediate goals because long-range goals often involve a different decision than short-range ones. Focusing on long-range goals, a graduating student might change the question above to “What will I do after graduation that will lead to successful career?”

28.Of the following steps, which occurs before the three other steps in making a

decision worksheet?

A.Listing the consequences of each solution.

B.Calculating a numerical summary of each solution.

C.Deciding which consequences are most important.

D.Writing down all possible solutions.

29.According to decision-making worksheet theory, an optimal decision is defined as

one that .

A.has the fewest variables to consider

https://www.360docs.net/doc/e23934512.html,es the most decision worksheets

C.has the most points assigned to it

D.is agreed to by the greatest number of people

30.The author develops the discussion in Para. 1 by means of .

A.describing a process

B.classifying types of worksheets

C.providing historical background

D.explaining a theory

31.The author states that “On the average, people can keep about seven ideas in their

minds at once” in the last paragraph to explain that .

A.most decisions involve seven steps

B.human mental capacity has limitations

C.some people have difficulty making minor as well as major decisions

D.people can keep more than seven ideas in their minds with practice

Why Mars is New Settlement

Is it possible to live on other planets? The United States government is taking a serious look at the moon and Mars as potential places for future human settlement. The moon could serve as a training ground for later journeys to Mars. Currently, with Mars becoming the eventual long-term goal, serious questions exist as to whether the dangers of the settlement on the moon are too extreme and unnecessary.

One major reason that the settlement on the moon is too dangerous is the difference between the atmosphere environment of the moon and Mars. Atmosphere is important because it protects humans and all other lives from a continuous attack of radiation caused by sources such as the sun. This radiation is especially dangerous to humans because it increases the risk of cancer and can negatively change DNA. The fact that the moon has no atmosphere can cause great harm t o human beings. Although Mars’ atmosphere is significantly thinner than Earth’s, at least it has one and would create some sort of protective barrier for humans.

Another important characteristic for human settlement is natural resources like water, of which the moon is believed to have none. Mars, however, contains vast quantities of water ice, dry ice, and also snow. There is also sufficient evidence that water once existed at the surface of Mars and might return in the future if the planet

warms. With increased technologies, the potential for settlers to remain on Mars by being increasingly self-sufficient makes Mars a much more attractive goal as the space settlement than the moon.

Future settlers will not only benefit from potential water on Mars; the planet is also rich in other natural resources such as oxygen, hydrogen, and minerals, which can be well used in productive ways. For example, hydrogen can be used as fuel, and it can be combined with nitrogen ( 氮气) to form new materials necessary for human settlement. Due to these advantages, Mars would be a more successful planet for exploration and settlement because it contains the basic resources necessary for humans to survive.

Since the environment of Mars is more similar to that of Earth and it contains resources necessary to help life exist, it should be the only option for any kind of long-term human settlement. The settlement on Mars would not only be a milestone in space but also an excellent chance for mankind to improve itself from past adventures on Earth and preserve and make the best use of the natural resources Mars has to offer.

32.According to Paragraph 2, the atmosphere on Mars would .

A.change the DNA structure of humans

B.measure the harmful radiation from space

C.provide protection against dangerous effects

D.cause humans to be exposed to serious illnesses

33.What can be inferred about water on Mars?

A.It is not present in a liquid state.

B.It doesn’t exist in large quantities.

C.It will bring potential dangers to settlers.

D.It can be easily changed into liquid forms.

34.The author believes that .

A.exploration of Mars takes great risk

B.natural resources on Mars last forever

C.settlement on Mars is perfectly acceptable

D.Mars is more suitable for settlement than Earth

35.Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?

CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion

A. B.

C. D.

The iPod Generation

Today it is common to see people who walk about with colored wires hanging from their ears wherever they go. They move about in their personal bubbles, sometimes unaware of what's happening around them. 36 Outside life is shut out. So are you one of "them"?

For me, walking around in my own personal bubble is perfect. 37 What's even better, wearing earphones seems to give a signal to people which says: "I'm not available for chatting at the moment."

Suppose you're at work and about to make an incredible breakthrough, but a colleague suddenly turns up. At this precise moment, the slightest disturbance would break your concentration. 38 Once again, those wires hanging from your ears would be sure to give that "Go away!" signal.

39 It's probably part of the growing up stage when they just want to ignore their whole family. While their mothers give them lectures about why they should do their homework, they can just turn up the volume on their MP3 player, smile, and say "Yes, Mum." Problem solved.

Pretty soon, not only will we have pretty colored wires hanging from our ears-but also our brains will be directly plugged into some new high-tech instrument. We'll be in a virtual world, communicating with everyone else, or choosing not to, as we like. In this world, we will all be permanently plugged in. 40 And they are changing our social habits along the way.

In the end, there is a thin line between using technology as a tool for making life better and being a slave to it! It's so strange -suddenly, I don't feel like wearing my earphones anymore.

A.Our instruments are changing quickly.

B.I also have wires hanging from my ears.

C.In the home situation, teenagers love these wires.

D.I don't have to deal with the noise from the environment.

E.After all, I am listening to my favourite music and would rather not be disturbed.

F.Listening to music through earphones is the perfect way to ignore such interruptions.

G.They walk around in their own spaces, with their personal "digital noise reduction

systems."
